Night Aspect is an Expedition in Nightreign that features the Nightlord boss Heolstor the Nightlord. Throughout the Night Aspect Expedition, players will need to defeat a random pool of Night Bosses, which can include encounters such as the Smelter Demon and the Fell Omen. For this expedition, players are recommended to build around Holy damage, since that is Heolstor the Nightlord's primary weakness.

Heolstor the Nightlord, also known as the Night Aspect, is a Nightlord in Nightreign and is the origin of the Night itself. Nightlords as a whole are the challenging Night Bosses players face on the third and final day of an expedition, each bringing its own unique move set, weaknesses, resistances, skills, and abilities to the fight. Taking one down requires players to coordinate their attacks closely in order to come out victorious. Heolstor the Nightlord specifically is the boss encountered during the Night Aspect expedition.

HP increase 25% 40% 57% 95% 116%
Attack Power increase 25% 55% 92% 183% 231%

Negations (or Absorptions)

The negation numbers are the % of your damage that gets blocked. For example, if a negation is 60, 40% of that damage by that type will go through and 60% will be negated. Bigger number = less damage. A negation of 100 means no damage goes through, and a negation of -100 mean the enemy takes 2x damage from that source. 0 means damage goes pretty much as is.

Resistances

The resistance numbers are the buildup amount to trigger it. For example, if a resistance is 100 you must deal 100 points of the given buildup to trigger it. Note that these go down over time, and increase each time the effect procs. The values after the "/"s indicate the increased resistances after each successive proc.

Heolstor the Nightlord Fight Strategy

The Best Tips for Heolstor the Nightlord:

Heolstor the Nightlord (Night Aspect) will first be encountered as The Shape of Night, a spectral knight covered in tattered cloth over its purple armor. At first, he will only have one arm wielding a broken greatsword. He usually only does one attack at a time, having very little combo potential.  The Shape of Night moves slowly throughout this opening stretch, but once its health drops to around 60%, it draws the greatsword from behind its back and starts putting it to use. From that point on, it gains new attacks, including roars and dash combos, while its earlier attacks start chaining into more combos and follow-ups.

Once The Shape of Night is defeated, it will start emitting darkness out of its body, which will then abruptly cut to reveal its true form, Heolstor the Nightlord (Night Aspect). In this form, Heolstor sheds the tattered cloth covering its armor, and its greatsword (Dark Moon Greatsword in Elden Ring) is fully imbued. Heolstor is considerably stronger here than it was as The Shape of Night, relying on teleportation and its enchanted blade to catch unprepared Nightfarers off guard. It gains a number of new attacks tied to the imbued greatsword, including AoE attacks and long-range projectiles. Because Heolstor can teleport right next to players who try to keep their distance, simply disengaging from the boss doesn't guarantee safety.

The Shape of Night

During this first part of the fight, The Shape of Night moves at a slow pace, relying on telegraphed slashes and dashes that are fairly easy to dodge roll through. Its attacks are simple enough that players just need to watch the movement of its sword to read what's coming next. Still, even though the attacks themselves are straightforward, the boss attacks constantly, so it shouldn't be underestimated. Because its moves are so readable, players can land Guard Counters to open up windows for their own attacks. For anyone who has trouble predicting its attacks well enough to land a Guard Counter, dodge rolling backward works just as well to stay safe.

Once The Shape of Night's health reaches roughly 60%, it starts wielding the greatsword that had been resting on its back, and its behavior shifts noticeably. It becomes far more aggressive, chaining together multiple slashes in quick succession and gaining the ability to dash through long combos that cover a lot of ground. When players notice it dashing toward them, the safer play is to dodge straight into the attack to avoid damage, then keep moving to dodge the slashes that typically follow. Once its health bar is fully depleted, the boss emits black flame from its body, signaling the transition into the next phase of the fight.

Heolstor the Nightlord Phase 1

After The Shape of Night's health bar is emptied, the fight cuts abruptly to reveal Heolstor's true form. The tattered cloth is gone, replaced by full armor and the fully enchanted greatsword. This first phase is considerably more aggressive than the previous fight against The Shape of Night, with Heolstor performing longer, faster dashes and swinging its enchanted greatsword far more often. It also recovers from its own attacks more quickly, which makes landing counterattacks noticeably harder. On top of its melee pressure, Heolstor begins using Incantations and other devastating attacks that can prove fatal if players fail to dodge them in time.

Much of Heolstor's offense in this phase comes from its imbued greatsword, which it uses to launch projectiles or trigger wide AoE explosions that can be tricky to avoid. When Heolstor spins around while dragging its sword along the ground, players should be ready to dodge the magic projectiles that follow each slash. It can also channel a barrage of projectiles all flying toward the player's position, but this leaves it vulnerable to strong attacks. The best response during this channeling attack is to run toward Heolstor while dodging the incoming projectiles, then land a heavy attack to stagger it and cut the spell short.

Heolstor the Nightlord Phase 2

Once Heolstor's health bar reaches 60%, it will fly into the air, creating a rift in the sky. Heolstor will then slam his sword onto the ground, creating explosive fissures with random Status Effects or Damage Types depending on the sword's enchantment. To avoid the fissures on the ground, players should run away from the boss to have a greater chance of avoiding the fissures.

Heolstor also closes distance aggressively in this phase, either through fast dash attacks or by teleporting directly next to nearby players, which makes it difficult to find a moment to heal or reset positioning. Overall, this phase ramps up the aggression even further compared to Phase 1, with Heolstor stringing together consecutive slashes before slamming its sword down to unleash a lethal blast around itself. Players who overextend during this stretch of the fight can be overwhelmed quickly by just how relentless Heolstor's attacks become.

Everdark Sovereign Heolstor the Nightlord Strategy

Heolstor the Nightlord Attacks & Counters

Attack Description Counter
Backstab Heolstor walks forward, then teleports towards its target. Heolstor will then do a slow three-hit combo with his greatsword. Once Heolstor teleports behind the player, they may dodge roll forward to gain distance from the boss and avoid the combo.
Dashing Slash Heolstor winds up, then quickly dashes in a straight line while using his sword to slash. Players may strafe or dodge roll sideways to move out of Heolstor's path.
Wide Slash Heolstor slashes his swords horizontally, starting from the left side. The attack slashes in a wide area in front of Heolstor. Players can stick behind Heolstor and to its left while the boss slashes to be in a safe spot.
Pouncing Combo Heolstor pounces towards a player, slashing from side to side three consecutive times. Players should dodge roll forward or towards Heolstor's back every time it slashes.
Upward Slash Heolstor dashes towards a player in a straight line, then does an upward slash with its greatsword. Players can strafe or dodge roll sideways to get out of Heolstor's path.
Winding Thrust Heolstor winds up into a stance with its sword glowing, pounces towards the player, then impales the ground in front of it. Players can dodge the initial pounce by dodge rolling sideways. When Heolstor impales the ground, players can dodge roll towards the boss on impact to be able to retaliate.
Three-Hit Combo Heolstor slashes its sword towards a player three consecutive times, with the last hit being a linear thrust.

Players can dodge roll the first two slashes by dodge rolling. The third hit can then be strafed or dodge rolled sideways.
Cover of Darkness Heolstor channels a spell, making the battlefield enveloped in darkness. Projectiles of light emerging from the ground will then rain down towards the arena randomly. Players can look out as the projectiles move towards them so they can dodge roll at the right time. Surge sprinting in a circle to outrun the projectiles is also an option. There is a small area around the boss that constantly deals damage.
Night of the Lord

Heolstor flies, channels a spell, then creates a rift in the sky. Heolstor then slams the ground with an imbued sword, creating explosive fissures that radiate all around him. Afterwards, small eruptions on the ground will occur all over the arena.
Heolstor randomly chooses an element to imbue his sword with: Fire, Lightning, Holy, Poison, Sleep, Madness, or Frostbite.

NOTE: If players have the Forsaken Hollows DLC, Heolstor can perform the Night of the Lord attack imbued with the Traitorous Straghess's affinity, scarlet rot status effect elden ring wiki guide 25pxScarlet Rot. If players stand on the exploding fissures, they will have scarlet rot status effect elden ring wiki guide 25pxScarlet Rot build-up applied to them.

As Heolstor flies, players can run away from the boss to keep a distance between them. The fissures will have a gap, so players can look for them and stay there as it explodes if they are out of position.
Alternatively, you can stay close to the boss and roll slightly after he lands. The area immediately around the boss will hit you as soon as he lands, but the fissures afterwards come out slightly after; you need to stay away from the immediate hitbox and dodge the fissures by delaying your roll slightly.

Dual Slash Heolstor slashes twice with its imbued swords, generating fire in a straight line. Players can dodge the first slash by dodge rolling, then rolling or strafing to the right as Heolstor thrusts its sword to avoid the line of fire.
Flaming Three-Hit Combo Heolstor performs the Three-Hit Combo with its swords imbued — this time, its last hit will be a horizontal slash, generating fires that erupt from the ground. Players can evade the first two attacks by dodging normally. For the third one, players can roll towards the right side to avoid the attack and the fire, and also to be able to retaliate against Heolstor.
Flaming Fissures

Heolstor will extend his sword and reel backwards. He then performs two consecutive slashes, pauses for a second, slashes twice again, then slashes once more and flies up into the air. Heolstor charges his sword up for a few seconds and then slams down to the ground to create explosive fissures, just like the Reality Rift. This attack ends his infusion phase.

While performing slashes, the entire arena, apart from a very small area around the boss, will be covered in small erupting explosions. There are small gaps between the eruptions, but players should stay close to the boss to avoid them.

Generally, dodge rolling into the boss for all of the slashes will work. His slashes have poor tracking, so once you're behind him the second slash will miss. When he flies up into the air, surge sprint with him to end up behind him and dodge slightly after he lands. The area immediately around the boss will hit you as soon as he lands, but the fissures afterwards come out slightly after; you need to dodge the fissures by delaying your roll slightly.

Alternatively, you can strafe around the boss. While he's infusing his sword, you can go behind him and his attacks should miss. The first slash covers a decent amount of distance, so run back behind him to his left-side to dodge the second slashes. The third slash should miss if you're locked on and running forward.

Hey wait a minute... that's not Artorias! That's Heolstor the Nightlord! (Page is messed up lol thanks John Fextra ;) )

      • Anonymous

Goddamn I love you Artorias, but your health is so high. One of my favorite bosses from both ds1 and in nightreign but he's practically a nightlord all on his own. Not that I'm complaining, that gives me more time to enjoy fighting him.

        • Anonymous

if you play a long time in high depths, Artorias boss fight is pratically the only situation (aside from FEW nightlords, like ED Libra), where you will always be worried about losing + is genuinely both fun and dangerous, including in trios scenario. Fromsoft did a good job with his redesign, specially making his stance very high to make the self-called players """""good""""" cry, because Artorias isn't Margit/Morgott/Midlenia who gets stance-broken every 2 seconds by walking to their side and spamming charged heavies. "WhErE iS mY pUnIsHiNg WiNdOwS ??" lol, did you consider dodging or using R1? Not every boss should be weak to braindead charged R2 spam dear "design specialists"

          • Anonymous

goat artorias making midlenia and fraudahn apologists cry without needing healing, flashbangs or clones. truly the og goat.

I think it's safe to say that if modern fromsoft handled DS1, the souls like genre would've died right then and there.

              • -small hitbox
                -runs away
                -super inconsistent punish windows

                -random gimmicks for artificial 'difficulty'
how can anyone like this boss

                • Anonymous

Instantly die whenever I have this guy solo, but in ds1, he's easier than opening a pickle jar. Somebody explain, like I can't be THAT BAD at this game, right?

Literally went back on ds1 to fight him after getting railed in this game, then proceeded to squash him like a bug. Come back for round two to show him who's the man, and he ended up turning me into a pancake right after comboing me three times in a row. He did NOT like me using lion's claw twice on him.

Five rounds losing to him in a row. FIVE! STOP GATEKEEPING DREGLORD, JUST LET ME FIGHT HIM PLEASE. I am SORRY for beating the hell out of you in ds1! Do NOT make me use EXECUTOR on you.

if artorias was a female boss who gets naked in second phase, the virgins would do insane mental gymnastics to defend every aspect of him, saying his Hp is fine for example.

                    • Anonymous

the game teaches the player repeatedly that as long as your i-frames are active then you won't be hit within those frames, so the fact that he's the ONLY boss in the game that for whatever reason has the ONLY move that does a 180 on this fundamental piece of knowledge and completely ignores i-frames where if you get hit by any of them then you're likely going to be stunlocked into getting hit by the additional flips is terrible design. this wouldn't be much of a problem if the game wasn't so roll-focused with its combat.

                      • Anonymous

why make attacks ignore iframes in the first place, it goes against everything good about boss design. what's next, unavoidable mapwide AoEs? oh wait...

Playing solo on Depth 5 and I get him. I go down from one attack and just as I’m stuck in revive animation, he stun-locks me with his janky triple lionsclaw attack. And I go down again. Thank you, Fromsoft.

                            • Anonymous

On top of being a top 3 run-ending night boss you can keep the abyss effect if you're still downed when he's beaten. Gotta love my goat

                              • Anonymous

His triple lion claw can bypass your I-frame completely (yes, the vow of the indomitable skill, your get up I-frame, duchess I-frame pocket watch, and your dodge I-frame too), so to avoid getting chain combo, you can walk to his side during all the attack, or use your character's ultimates

                                • Run or dodge towards (over) him during his Lion Claw AoW. I consistently succeeded in it using Duchess (sometimes sprinting, sometimes dodging). His HP and hit spam are kinda joke tho. Playing as Duchess in DON is a nightmare upon encountering him.

                                  • Anonymous

an amazing boss from ds1, but made worse via too much damage and health, and an extremely punishing attack chain that he sometimes spams. absolute joke with executor parries though (at least in normal, not sure about DoN)

                                    • Anonymous

I played I think 5 Dreglord Expeditions and didn't get him, am I just unlucky or does he not appear? I defeated Straghess before fighting Atrorias, I didn't play Dark Souls 1 so I really want to fight Artorias since I can without playing an old game that makes you stop moving to use a flask.

                                      • Anonymous

Anyone who haven't heard about Artorias before would say that this boss is trash, because he is. Literally no other boss can end runs as easily in DoN as this guy. And it's not because of his new second phase: the i-frame bypassing somersault and near instantenous horizontal swipe into backflip that he does come straight from DS1. Although, he can also randomly swap targets during grab lunge.

Without insane ranged damage he is virtually unbeatable in depth 5. Ridiculously unfun to fight even in regular expeditions.

                                        • Anonymous

I've noticed that when it enters the second phase, its defense and attack decrease and increase respectively. But is the defense reduction physical or is it another type of damage? It also reduced my defenses and those of the others.

                                          • Anonymous

Bro is busted as he is able to beat all base game nightlords by himself and almost take Straghess to phase 4 in boss vs boss battles all with his non dominant hand. Red balancer relic third effect is the only real hard counter for this guy.

Note that this wiki still uses the image of Artorias from DS1 becuase Artorias in 2012 is perfect and will always be perfect even 13 years later

Now that the dlc's been added to the DoN pool depth 5 is going to turn into super hell, any run with artorias as a night 2 boss may as well be a throw run

Found that if you get caught in his first somersault you can unlock and sometimes just narrowly dodge the follow-ups (if any).

Even with other attacks he tends to miss if you dodge right.
Unfortunately, if you’re caught in his Lion’s claw attack, and he decides to do a double or triple, there’s no getting out of that one (as far as I tried) and you’ll just have to eat the damage.
The fight’s a bit of a pain but I’m learning. I only like encountering him when I’m playing as Undertaker/Ciaran

He is weak to holy 100% because blade of calling dagger skill was doing excellent damage even in 3 players in solo it did 8%-10% his max health everytime. He can bleed as well but very resistant

                                                      • Anonymous

Think his stats are BS ? Well now imagine him in DoN, only needs like Depth 2 damage increase until 90% of his attacks just 1 shot most characters regardless of health bonus or not. And some of his attacks are double swings, so that max health damage negation is just cosmetic against those.

Try to guess the developers' favourite boss challenge! Difficulty impossible!

why does this page say artorias was introduced in the DLC? people who don't know what they are talking about shouldn't be allowed to add random useless information. The BOSS FIGHT is from the DLC. The character predates the DLC... His fucking dog is a mandatory boss???

Crazy how much harder this guy is who was a Dark Souls 1 boss, is over Divine Beast Dancing Lion which was one of the harder bosses from Shadow of The Erdtree. I've seen people give up when they see Death Knights, not because of the Death Knights themselves but because they know their run is gonna get ended by Artorias.

Every other ds1-3 boss: nha don't change em, they can just be a free win

Artorias: 25 pounds of cocaine and heroin

Guardian hard counters this guy. Everything Artorias does is physical damage, and the only move you need to watch out for is his grab attack, which...you know. It's a grab attack

                                                                • Anonymous

Whoever thought uncapped damage multiplier was a good idea, I hope your day is ruined for each run you killed.

                                                                  • Anonymous

People who say his Lion's Claw is undodgeable are mad coping. You're literally being hit by a move taken from a boss fight made 12 years ago, when everything moved like molasses. Don't dodge into him, you need to dodge out of the wat (left or right).

                                                                    • Anonymous

Dude is straight up stronger than Heolstor himself. Insane run ender and a bit overtuned, especially for a non-DoN run

                                                                      • Anonymous

You know what this boss needed? Delayed attacks, 0 frame start up attacks and grabs, now THAT's what I call a good boss.

                                                                        • Anonymous

Now, I know Nightreign's place in the canon lore is kind of all over the place, but I wanted to point something out since you don't actually get to kill Artorias. Sure, you beat him, but unlike other bosses, he doesn't explode into that giant gray cloud of dust or whatever. Instead, he just collapses to his knees and then just...disappears?

My theory is that Manus specifically dragged him back to the Abyss. Not only do we NOT see his body like how every other boss explodes into dust, but a portal very reminiscent of DS1's portal also appears around him, which means Manus probably just took him back.

This is also F*CKED because it means that, just for a moment, Artorias was truly free, and the moment we beat him, he gets sent back to the Abyss, and if you know anything about DS lore, that is NOT a fun place to be.

                                                                          • Anonymous

Wearing! Bozos started spreading misinformation saying that his Lion Claw is undodgeable, which is not true, and even I who am bad at the game could dodge normally.

                                                                            • Anonymous

Why is he doing twice as much damage with a faster weapon being a greatsword compared to Heolstor’s magic colossal sword. Not even deep of night mode and he’s ending runs with casual 1 shot swings.

                                                                              • Anonymous

He may as well be a nightlord with how ridiculously tanky he is and how hard he hits. That combined with how janky the hitbox on his lion's claw still is an insane run ender

                                                                                • Anonymous

What's the deal with dodging his repeated front flip slams? They feel undodgable for no real reason. Even ironeye's mark dodge just gets slammed?

                                                                                  • Anonymous

Maybe it's just my nostalgia speaking, but those new running attacks he has look very out of place and straight up silly.

                                                                                    • Anonymous

so when he does that explosion he can apply "abyss" effect on you that increases damage but decreases defence and usually it seems like it gets removed when the boss fight ends but if u were downed it stays procced forever the entire time. also its stacks so the amount of times he does the explosion you can get hella debuffed or buffed whatever u consider it

                                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                                            • Anonymous
