Shifting Earth in Nightreign is an Expedition modifier that transforms the landscape of Limveld, altering enemy and boss spawns, introducing new challenges, and revealing hidden areas containing unique rewards. Each Shifting Earth event changes how players approach an Expedition, encouraging different routes, strategies, and encounters.

Shifting Earth is triggered by defeating Nightlords at the end of an Expedition and remains active for several subsequent runs before the world gradually returns to normal. Players can also advance time at the Roundtable Hold by resting in the bed to cycle active Shifting Earth events.

Every Shifting Earth contains a hidden secret that rewards players for thorough exploration. Discovering these secrets also contributes toward related Trophies and Achievements, including a special achievement earned by uncovering every Shifting Earth secret in Elden Ring Nightreign.

Great Hollow and All Shifting Earths in the Deep of Night Mode

All Shifting Earths, including the latest one, known as the Great Hollow, have a chance to appear during a Deep of Night expedition, for players who own the Forsaken Hollows DLC. When starting a DoN expedition, players will not know which map or boss they will be on until the match loads up. In case the player gets the Great Hollow, they will enter the map through one of the 3 entry points: There's one in the Northeast, and the other two from the South or Southwest.

The terrain, Locations, and various Points of Interest will remain the same as the regular Expeditions. This includes the Temples on either side of the map, the Western Underground Fort, the Eastern Underground Fort, and the Great Crystal in the middle of the map that grants the Favour of the Great Hollow.

Alternatively, if the player gets the base map Limveld, some runs can have a random Shifting Earth, like Crater, Mountaintop, Rotted Woods, or Noklateo, the Shrouded City.

(NOTE: These additions are only available to players who purchase or own the Forsaken Hollows DLC).

On top of this release, Bandai Namco also added the DLC bosses (Balancers and Dreglord) as targets that can appear in Deep of Night expeditions. Patch 1.03.1 was also introduced, which included various adjustments and fixes. While inside the Temple in the Great Hollow, the curse effects such as Fire, Magic, Lightning, and Holy-related were increased.

The continuous HP loss and power HP recovery curse effects inside the Temple have also been amplified. Another change applied to the new map is expanding the range of clues that will be revealed when players interact with the map. These maps can be found in unmarked camps in the Great Hollow.

Another change that was noted in the patch is that when the Nightfarers are engulfed in the Night's Tide, their feet will now appear to be burning for a more distinguishable effect. Meanwhile, the Fire Wolves - Gladius invasion has been weakened, particularly decreasing the attack power of the wolves during the event.

New Shifting Earth and Map Changes in Forsaken Hollows DLC

Elden Ring Nightreign's developer, FromSoftware, Inc., confirmed that there will be 2 new Nightlords, 2 new playable Nightfarers, 1 Shifting Earth, and more terrain changes that will be included in the Forsaken Hollows DLC. The newest Shifting Earth will be called Great Hollow, and it will be the biggest of its kind, altering the vast terrain of Limveld.

It has been confirmed that it will be an entirely new map, but one that will be integrated into the current map of Limveld. This was shown in the Elden Ring Nightreign Forsaken Hollow DLC trailer, where the player can be seen flying towards a large crystal surrounded by translucent buildings in the distance that stretch as far and wide as the realm.

Forsaken Hollows DLC is set to release on December 4, 2025, and it's expected to bring the biggest changes and additions since the game was launched nearly 7 months ago. There will be at least 2 new Points of Interest called Swamps and Forges.

The teaser trailer of Forsaken Hollows did not show the specifics of what kind of swamps will be added, but there will be at least Frenzy, Poison, and Scarlet Rot types. These swamps will be integrated into the map of Limveld and will appear in different areas. The swamps will function similarly to the original game, Elden Ring, where the players' status bar will fill every second they stay in the swamp.

Aside from the Swamps, players will also find Forges, which are new points of interest in Limveld. Forges are locations that players can explore, where they can find a small town that's protected by a boss. The forge will be a stone monument with smoke blowing from its base.

When the player interacts with the forge, they can reroll the skill on any of their Weapons. This also applies to Weapons that presently do not have any skills attached to them. The forge can only be used one time by each player.

Anyone else having it where the Expedition Menu doesn't tell you there's a Shifting Earth going on, but you go into an Expedition and suddenly there is one?
Very frustrating in solo where it's a lot harder to actually do them and reduces the POIs you can choose from.

My prediction: DLC will add new poison swamp shifting earth that will replace half of the map, with poison themed bosses like ulcerated tree spirit, covetous demon and demon of song, and enemies like angels from the ringed city DLC. There is a required valiant gargoyle duo fight that blocks the way to the final circle. The reward that you can get from this event greatly boosts attack power upon facing poison afflicting enemies, but it's hidden deep within optional hero's grave with several chariots that you need to bypass first to obtain it.

        Absolute perfection

Here's a tip for duping in the city. walk to the far right, by the edge of the map to the dupe room. please stop aggroing the black knife assassin.

I found some player know the place of Rotten wood buff without going to the fort (they ping it at starting day2)
how ? any secret of it ?

It seems like most people know the correct route around Noklateo now, or at least they do right up until the point where Astel dies and then they immediately lose all brain function and stop thinking.

After Astel it goes: Kill Dragonkin -> Climb the wall of the aquaduct -> Kill Headless Troll -> Kill Assassin -> Dupe Room -> Jump the wall out of the city and land next to the Dragon -> Kill Dragon -> Kill Loretta -> Kill Hippo if you didn't get it on day 1.

You should be clearing every boss in the city before going to the dupe room so you can make the best choice in what weapon to replicate. There is more than enough time to do all of this unless your clear speed is disasterously slow.

the number of randoms who quit after they don't see Noklateo is so damn high.
why ? your brain is not braining unless you see it ???

do you know why the circle always closes in on the shifting earth in day 2? it's because you're supposed to do shifting earth on day 2
do you know why raid events on day 2 happen within 3 minutes with a shifting earth active? it's because you're supposed to do shifting earth on day 2, getting libra cursed deep into noklateo would kind of suck and the devs know this
do you know why grafted blade greatsword is pretty rare? it's because it's a legendary weapon, and there are dozens of other legendaries that could drop instead

but go ahead, walk out of noklateo at level 6 with 3 flasks and a giant's red braid and tell me this strategy is worth it because "what if i DID get it bro"

Useless fact that won't help anybody: The hand army to the upper right of the crater has big hands that drop a ringed finger, it's a decently high chance and I think the huge hands have a guaranteed chance to drop it. In case you wanted to dual wield ringed fingers

I'm actually starting to hate Noklateo entirely because the people who want to go there at level 1 without even clearing the starting camp are always the most insufferable spam pinging metaslave jackasses on the planet.

                            • Anonymous

you can go to noklateo right after landing and hunt the headless knights, headless troll, black knife assassins, and the baby astels if you have a ranged weapon, pretty much robbing the entire city on day 1.
afterward you can revisit it on day 2 and fully focus on astel, the dragonkin, and the two bosses outside the city.

                                Ranked from best to worst:

                                - Rotted Woods. Straight up boss rush simulator, with easy to obtain reward that is unarguably the best one. The only event that is not designed to waste your time while you try to get from point A to B. Lots of easy enemies around that you can farm after the end of day 2 for extra money.
                                - Crater. Legendary upgrade is cool but the road to Magma Wyrm is unnecessarily stretched, on top of that finding the entrance there by yourself is nearly impossible on first attempt. This is not a problem now that I have played the game for over 100 hours, but still infuriating in the beginning. The area is still pretty fun though.
                                - Mountaintops. Can get lots of legendaries here, but other than that rewards are mid, and only help to deal with the area itself. Pretty good for Caligo expeditions though.
                                - Noklateo. It just sucks. The reward is basically useless. The area being a full-blown legacy dungeon with a labyrinth-like layout is absolutely terrible for this game. And if you die to any boss while the second circle is already closing, the game spawns you outside of the city which is the final nail in the coffin. You are not getting those runes back brother. Getting to level 15 is not nearly as consistent with Noklateo unlike with other events, and you also get less runes overall. I will never not hate this area.

                                • Anonymous

I used to hate Mountaintop, but it's actually one of the best shifting earth. Sure power of the mountain sucks, but you are guaranteed to get 2 or 3 legendries.

MAKE SURE TO CHECK THE ICE CRYSTALS. They can drop golden weapon like Axe of Godrick.
                                  >always check the one on the path to the yoda boss past the wyvern and the yeti duo<

There are a lot of easy bosses on the way, and the Ice dragon will guarantee drop a legendary.

The worst part of shifting earth is getting cursed by the demon merchant while you're right at the magma wyrm or astel. Now they one-shot everyone and it's so hard to get to the demon merchant to break the curse. Feels like a run ender to me, and it's happened 4 times to me.

                                    • Anonymous

Noklateo is easily the worst one, and others aren't even bad. If you want to kill Astel (more like Astall) with your teammates in time, you need to run into the city as soon as first circle starts closing during day 2, otherwise there is literally no chance you will accomplish this. Because some Jimmy intern decided that Astel needs to be right at the border of night's tide, and that day 2 boss should be on the opposite side of the circle. And the cherry on top is the fact that it removes the central castle which is always the main rune farming point on every run. Just why...

                                      • Anonymous

If you go right in Noklateo there is a spirit stream hidden down a cliff a little after the assassin, it launches you up to a platform that has a scarab and down the stairs is a chest that can drop a legendary.

                                        • Anonymous

Gotta love Noklateo being in the opposite end of the map during day 2, Having it always be an anxiety run towards the city.

                                          • Anonymous

Noklateo really stands out as feeling like a legacy dungeon rather than an open-world passage. It might've killed the pace of the game but I kinda wish Nightreign had more of that sort of dungeon crawling.

                                            • Anonymous

I think it would be cool if they eventually made a 4 player mode. Splitting into teams of two to each work a half of the map would
                                              be fun.

                                              • Anonymous

Level design of the crater is genuinely terrible. Took me several tries to figure out how to get to magma wyrm on my own, and even then I never managed to get the legendary upgrade because I don't want to rush there right at the start of day 2, try to kill at least one boss in the area and get to the church. Oh, and you have to run an entire marathon before getting to the boss, and of course devs decided to place a magma wyrm in there and still keep his stalling tripple charge attack. Yes, it's skill issue, but this area is trash regardless.

                                                • Anonymous

Might be obvious, but always worth remembering: you generally want to rush to the boons first, and only then work your way back through other objectives and bosses in the area. The last circle will close in towards some random point around the outskirts of the shifted earth zones, and the boons will probably be among the first things to get caught in the fortnite. Crater is a bit different since you need to bird out of the altar room, but you still don't want to spend your precious time fighting a black blade kindred or a fallingstar beast in the surface before starting the descent.

                                                  • Ice Mountain is genuinely worthless and only gives you a hard-mode version of any default boss. Non-shifting earth Maps are better and more consistant and let you kill more bosses around the map.

The reward for the Ice Mountain is so worthless. Scarlet Rot forest gives IMMUNITY to scarlet rot and a Health Boost on top of that alongside recoverable health. The requirements? Make a straight run to a castle to find the tree to click on, or just bump into the tree randomly. The only bad part about is is the cum bugs that snipe you from miles away on top of trees, but that's avoidable and not bad at all. Meanwhile the Mountain requires you to do 2 jumps, walk across like 2-3 chains avoid a dragon and GUARANTEES atleast two frostbite procs on you (Even with the Frostbite resistance buff from the duo trolls it still will proc twice.), not counting if the dragon might decide to just kill you, then a massive walk up a mountain for a buff that gives some buffs against frostbite (applicable to one nightlord) and buffs to your own frostbite (something a relic already does) so why ever run it? it deletes an entire corner of the map and replaces it with a single ice ruin, two bosses (both of which have dedicated drops that never change so instead of 6 unique rewards its 4 rewards and 2 forced ones). Most of the time when playing with a group of friends we get to 13-15 consistantly but with the Mountain it's rare to see us hit 13 and that's only if we ignore a flask upgrade to take out a day 2 boss. The biggest "plus" to the mountain is the discount Borealis that isn't fun to fight and usually feels like a waste of time. I've heard it's a guarenteed Legendary and two Epics but it doesn't mean anything when the Volcano gives you a Legendary of your choice, or just finding one in any of the other Shifting Earths. The Volcano has plenty of bosses to drop one, the City has Astel which usually always drops a Legendary and has a fantastic buff, the Scarlet Rot forest gives access to 5-7 bosses to run around and kill after finding the buff and can usually give a Legendary with enough Item Discovery.

                                                    • Anonymous

The magma wyrm in the crater was a couple more hits from dying and I got error code 34878-0 and lost my whole run, now I’m angry.

If I click on it, it will open a new tab with same picture and quality and zooming in does nothing because of how low quality it is. Unless I am missing something, so far most screenshots I tried to look at were utterly useless and more confusing than helpful.

                                                                > Ancient Battlefield: a battlefield where you're caught between the leyndell and liurnia, depending on which boss you get at the end of the event you get massively raised defenses, or massively raised affinity damage

                                                                > Dragon's peak: self explanatory mountain with red lightning where you fight an ancient dragon to gain two random pieces of legendary gear (it will be a much harder/riskier fight)

                                                                > Pre-Historic Hornsent kingdom: allows the party to gain one guaranteed wending grace, and the final fight grants legendary weapons that deal status ailments

                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                      • Anonymous

rotted wood is easily the best out of the 4; the buff gives you more hp which is the best stat in the game no matter what; added on top is the rallying mechanic from bloodborne, very good for Ironeye and dex users to get hp back quickly without chugging. The best part is simply the abundance of red field bosses, as long as you are lvl 9-11 you can do all of them easily with the Forest buff, they are all bunched together too; the bosses drop purple at least so you can easily get legendaries. The rune from the bosses WILL get you to lvl 15 every run and then 30-50k more rune left. It is just way better than any other place in the game

                                                                        • Anonymous

I heard that beating the game (final night lord) locks you out of Shifting Earth events, or at least make them much more rare to happen. Is that actually true ? I'm scared of beating the final boss now :(

                                                                          • Anonymous

They need to change this mechanic so that sleeping just lets you pick the map. The rng and making it locked behind boss fights to play something other than the boring default map is super dumb

                                                                            • Anonymous

So you can't get shifting earth or raided after beating the game? And shifting earth affects matchmaking? This gotta be the most ass game design I've ever seen, bravo formsoft

                                                                              • Anonymous

is there a way to trigger a specific shifting earth again? Sleeping seem to only removes shifting terrain.

                                                                                • Anonymous

what is the other events other than defeating a nightlord makes the earth shift? I only did the crater just once and slept, I kept sleeping understanding that's what I should do shift earth only to find out it's doing the exact opposite! I'm sick and tired of doing default mapand I wanna do the mountaintops and the rotted woods. I'm not experiencing the game enough!

                                                                                  • Anonymous

While I have received the trophies from The Crater, Rotted Woods, Naklateo the Shrouded City, Mountaintop.
The trophy Shifting Earth I have not received it, how is this possible?

                                                                                    • Anonymous

I unlocked the rotted woods, but I don't find anyone in matchmaking anymore, I even selected every expedition at once. If I reset it by going to sleep, will I be able to get the scarlet forest again after beating the same boss I got it from or do I need to start from the beginning and defeat every boss one after another going through every shift of earth until I reach the scarlet forest?

                                                                                      • Anonymous
