Gladius Beast of Night, also known as Tricephalos, is a Nightlord in Nightreign. This is the first Nightlord that players typically encounter. It takes the form of a three-headed wolf with the unique ability to split itself into three separate wolves. As with other Nightlords, this is a challenging Night Boss faced on the third and final day, bringing its own distinct move set, weaknesses, resistances, skills, and abilities to the encounter. Coordinated attacks from the whole group are necessary to bring it down and come out victorious. Gladius Beast of Night is specifically the Nightlord encountered during the Tricephalos expedition.
A many-legged beast appearing from shadow, carrying on its back a chain-link sword used to hunt its prey. Between the fangs of its many heads flicker overwhelming flames. When assailed by multiple shadows, only sacred light can hinder the hunt.

Gladius Beast of Night Fight Strategy
The Best Tips for Gladius Beast of Night:
Gladius, Beast of Night (Tricephalos), is a three-headed wolf carrying a sword chained to its back. In its original form, its attacks and combo strings are fairly straightforward, making it easy enough for players to dodge and counterattack. Occasionally, it uses the chained sword to sweep across the battlefield, covering a wide area that can damage even players positioned behind it if the attack isn't dodged in time. Once its health drops to a certain point, though, Gladius splits into three separate wolves, with one of them still carrying the sword. At that point, a group of players can split up the three wolves' attention, allowing for one-on-one fights with each until the boss eventually reforms back into the Tricephalos.
Phase 1
In this opening phase, Gladius relies on basic swipes, slams, fire breath, and bites from its three jaws. Most of its attacks only reach a short distance, with the exception of when it drags its sword around the battlefield using the chain. Players tend to find this first form manageable, since its attacks are easy to dodge while sticking close to retaliate. Gladius is also extremely weak to Holy Damage, so it's worth planning a run around locations that offer gear or upgrades dealing that damage type.
As mentioned, Gladius occasionally uses its chained sword for wide sweeping attacks or slams, swinging both the sword and the chain itself across the battlefield. Even players positioned behind Gladius need to stay cautious during these sweeps, since they can still take damage even while attacking from that angle. Despite this, the fight remains fairly simple overall, since dodging toward the chain or sword is usually enough to avoid these attacks entirely. Successfully dodging gives players a window to land one or two attacks before Gladius recovers and resumes its assault.
Phase 2
Once Gladius's health reaches 75%, it becomes wrapped in flames and turns into a fireball that flies forward before materializing again, this time splitting into three separate wolves with their own basic attack strings. These three wolves alternate between passive and aggressive states, so players can focus their attention on whichever wolf is currently being aggressive. The wolf carrying the sword acts as the pack leader and will occasionally command the other two to attack at the same time, which can quickly overwhelm an unprepared solo player. Because a lone player can be punished heavily by this pack, it's generally recommended that solo players retreat from the wolves until they merge back into the Tricephalos. Groups, on the other hand, have the option of luring the wolves apart to fight them individually, and certain ultimate abilities, such as those belonging to Guardian and Raider, are particularly effective against the pack.
After roughly 45 seconds, the three wolves reform back into Gladius. This time, however, Gladius returns with stronger variants of its attacks combined with fire. Whenever it attacks with its sword, there's now a chance it performs the Sword Slam Blast, soaring into the air before diving down and striking the ground with its sword to create an explosion. Gladius can also drive its burning sword into the ground and pull it back out to send a wave of fire forward. Generally speaking, players want to stay close to Gladius's side as much as possible during this phase, since most of its attacks are aimed forward. Occasionally, though, the Tricephalos channels a spell that creates a blast around itself, though this is easy to evade thanks to its small area of effect.
When Gladius is defeated for the first time, players will unlock six new Expeditions. They will also receive the Night of the Beast and Old Pocketwatch relics, giving players the following effects once equipped:
- Night of the Beast
- Stamina recovers with each successful attack +1
- Starting armament deals fire damage
- Old Pocketwatch
Gladius Beast of Night Attacks & Counters
| Attack | Description | Counter |
| Phase 1 | ||
|---|---|---|
| Three-Headed Bite | Gladius charges towards its target, using its jaws to attack the player | Players can dodge roll to either side exactly at the moment Gladius goes for a bite. If evaded successfully, Gladius can be attacked once before it recovers. |
| Side-to-Side Sword Swing | Gladius' left head will swing, causing the sword tied to a chain to fly from your left side to your right. It will then swing once more, swinging to the opposite side. | The first swing can be dodged by dodge rolling towards the direction it is coming from, so roll to forward left first. Then, watch out for the second swing coming from the right — roll to forward right on impact to get close to Gladius to be able to attack it during its recovery. |
| Triple Bite | Gladius' heads will wind up, then attack the player three times in quick succession, with the third attack being delayed. | As Gladius winds its three heads up, try to strafe towards your left, then dodge roll forward-left as it attacks to try to get behind Gladius. From there, stay behind Gladius as it goes for the third attack and keep punishing it with attacks until the sequence finishes. |
| Sword Sweep | Gladius winds up and raises its head, then swings the chain, causing the sword to swing around it. | If near Gladius during the start of the attack, dodge roll to the left as the chain is going to hit, then go for an attack or two before Gladius recovers. If far from Gladius, try to run away from the sword's range. |
| Pounce | Gladius pounces in a straight line. | Players can dodge roll to either side as Gladius pounces, as this attack has poor tracking. |
| Fire Breath | Gladius generates fire from its mouth and releases it in a cone in front of it. | As Gladius winds up the attack, fire particles will be seen inside its mouth. Players can dodge roll to either side to avoid the attack. |
| Vertical Slash | Gladius stands on it hind legs, throwing the sword up, then slams the sword onto the ground. |
Once Gladius throws its sword up, players can rush towards the boss and stick to it to avoid the slam. However, if players are near where the sword will slam, they can dodge roll as the sword slams onto the ground. |
| Sword Fury (1st Variant) | Gladius pounces on a player, then spins the chain and sword, damaging those at the edge of the spin. | Players can stay close to Gladius during the initial attack, as only the first spin needs to be dodged, with the bigger spin not hitting players within melee distance of Gladius. |
| Sword Fury (2nd Variant) | Gladius pounces on a player, spinning in the opposite direction from the first variant. | Players can still stay beside Gladius and dodge the first spin, as the second spin will not hit those beside Gladius. |
| Volcanic Burst | Gladius plunges its sword into the ground before tearing it back out alongside a massive torrent of flame. | The attack can by dodged a split second after Gladius pulls the sword out of the ground. |
| Phase 2 | ||
| Split Form | Gladius turns its body into fire, charges forward, then splits into three. The three hounds will then act as individual enemies. | Players can play defensively during this form, as Gladius can be quite difficult to hit. Players can either run away from Gladius until it fuses into one hound, or dodge roll the three hounds' attacks. If playing in a group, each player can take on a wolf until it returns to its original form. |
| Flaming Sword | Gladius draws the flaming sword behind it, then impales it into the ground. Then, Gladius pulls it back, generating a wave of fire in front of it. | Players can dodge roll towards Gladius as the sword is pulled. If far from Gladius, players can dodge roll when the wave of fire hits them. |
| Flame Blast | Gladius roars, channeling a spell that generates a small blast around it. | As soon as Gladius turns orange as it roars, players can take a few steps back, as the blast radius will be small. |
| Sword Slam Blast | After attacking with the sword, Gladius retracts the chain, jumps in the air, and impales the sword into the ground, creating flame blasts around the arena. | Players can dodge roll the explosions by timing the roll with the blasts. Additionally, players can position themselves behind Gladius as it soars through the air to avoid the blasts. |

Gladius, Beast of Night (Everdark Sovereign) Fight Strategy
Everdark Gladius Overview
Initially, Everdark Gladius will start fighting as three hounds, with one wielding a blade, similar to the base Gladius fight. During this form, the hounds will slowly walk up to the player, with the sword-wielding hound trailing the two hounds. It will use normal hound attacks to swarm at the Nightfarer if playing solo, overwhelming them. During this phase, the player should look into luring one hound at a time, as its attacks can easily be dodged, allowing for retaliation. Its basic attacks will mostly consist of different variants of bite, such as a normal bite as it runs at the player, or it can use two consecutive bites that can catch impatient players.
Once its health reaches around 70%, Everdark Gladius will merge to become the Tricephalos, gaining attacks significantly stronger than when it was separated. When merged into one, Everdark Gladius can use lethal attacks that can generate blasts or quickly pounce at the player from afar. It will also utilize its sword to slash at the player or create flaming fissures all over the arena.
Eventually, Everdark Gladius will separate into three again, this time, adding more attacks to its repertoire. In the third phase, Everdark Gladius can spew fire from its sword, spreading across the area in front of where it swipes. After a short while, it will merge back again into the Tricephalos. Everdark Gladius can be difficult to catch in this phase, as it will be highly mobile with attacks that can keep the player away from it. However, once players get to be in melee distance of Everdark Gladius, they can avoid the chains and the sword that hits mid-range, allowing players to retaliate as it misses its attacks.
Everdark Gladius will still be weak against
Holy, so it is recommended for players to plan their route to obtain Incantations and Weapons that deal Holy damage. However, if players cannot find any gear related to
Holy, Everdark Gladius is a bit susceptible to the Sleep status effect, so players can find it effective if they can build it up on the boss.
Phase 1
The fight with Everdark Gladius will start against the three hounds, identical to what the players faced during the base Gladius fight. In this form, the three hounds will attack the player separately with basic attacks that can be easily dodged. However, players shouldn't underestimate this form, as the hounds can easily overwhelm players when they attack as a group. Players should lure the hounds one at a time to open them up to attacks. The sword-wielding hound will be trailing the other two hounds, so players can avoid the encounter with it and focus on the two hounds instead, as it will have attacks that are more difficult to deal with. Players should also be attentive to the position of the hounds during this phase, keeping them on the screen to avoid being backstabbed or hounded. When players focus on only one hound, it can easily be staggered, allowing players to deal more damage to it instead of spreading the stagger build-up on all hounds.
Phase 2
When Everdark Gladius's health reaches around 70%, it will merge into the Tricephalos. For all encounters with Everdark Gladius, it will always do its opening attack, wherein it will bite on the sword and perform two dash attacks (Slice and Dice) at the player. Players can dodge roll towards Everdark Gladius to avoid taking damage. In Phase 2, Everdark Gladius will be more mobile, performing lunging attacks and combining them with its sword that can hit from afar. It can also perform a new attack, wherein it will launch its sword towards the sky, imbue it with fire, then slam it on the ground, generating an explosion that covers a lot of ground in the arena. This move is heavily telegraphed, as the Everdark Gladius will always perform this move after slashing its sword on the ground twice. When Everdark Gladius launches its sword up, players should sprint away from it as far as possible to be able to dodge it more easily or to escape its blast radius. During Phase 2, players should be patiently waiting for their turn to attack, as Everdark Gladius will have zoning attacks that can make it difficult for players to approach it.
Phase 3
Everdark Gladius will then split into three again after its health reaches around 30%-40%, with the hounds becoming more aggressive and having additional attacks. At the start of the third phase, right after Everdark Gladius splits, the hounds will then perform Flaming Dashes towards the player. Players will have to know the location of each hound, then strafe sideways or dodge roll the dashes at the moment of impact to avoid taking damage. Then, it will continue using then attacks during the first phase. However, the sword-wielding hound can send out flames (Desecrated Ground) toward the player's direction, so players staying away from it can be damaged.
After a short while, the three hounds will transform back into its Tricephalos form, which is an easier form to fight against compared to the three hounds. In this form, players should always stick beside Everdark Gladius to avoid getting hit by the chain and the sword from mid-range while also being able to retaliate against it when possible. Once Everdark Gladius is defeated, players can purchase the Dark Night of the Beast from Collector Signboard.

Then, as each hound dashes toward the player, they can strafe or dodge roll sideways to avoid getting hit by the wolves. |
| Desecrated Ground | The hound carrying the sword spins and conjures fire that spreads on the ground, directed at the player. Everdark Gladius will also do this once it merges back into the Tricephalos for the final time. | Players can move away from the hound with the sword once it spins. When it sends out fire, there will be small safe spots on it that players can stand on to avoid getting hit. |
| Upward Bite | A hound bites at the player, then does a follow-up upward bite for its finisher. | Players can dodge roll away from the first bite to gain distance, then move and dodge roll to the right as the hound goes for the second bite. |

Anonymousthe listed counter to the sword dance is just wrong? standing close to him makes the sword miss sure but you die to invisible fire anyway

AnonymousI love frame traps, i love not getting to play the game and immediately being doomed to lose 400 points whenever Gladius shows up in DoN because of desynced hitboxes that one shot you.

Anonymous
AnonymousIf you get stuck against Gladius as Poisoneye, DO NOT DESPAIR: the split dogs seemingly have a much lower poison resistance that isn't noted here. You can shoot him all you want when they're together and never see a poison proc, but split I can focus the sword one and proc it easily

AnonymousWhy does the normal gladius page have a everdark info box on the top, it just looks confusing.

Anonymouseverdark becomes a trillion times harder in multiplayer because nobody knows not to interact with the damage boost gimmick

AnonymousWould be a genuinely fun boss if he didn't deal as much damage as he does. He really doesn't need the attack buffs, and it's hard to tell when he's baiting you because sometimes his sword is on his back and he still gets buffed when hit, and 3 stacks is overkill. Even Adel gets an attack buff when he grabs someone but at least it's easy to avoid if you know the timing, and in turn can refill your ult gague if you do so. Don't get me wrong, he's actually fun but they need to nerf his attack power

Anonymous
AnonymousDo yourself a favor and start bringing fire negation and dmg negation at full HP items to this fight instead of stacking +dmg. Also, if you struggle with dodging the doggo's deadliest abilities, bring a shield with Vow of the Indomitable and some Starlight Shards to sustain it. Remember: dead people deal zero DPS.

AnonymousRedditors begging for Libra and now Gladius to be nerfed are pure crybabies indeed lmao

AnonymousFirst variant is a really fun boss with a great design. Second variant is too much of modern Fromsoft's usual "Oh look at how hard this is" as the literal ground in a three mile radius explodes and kills the entire party. I genuinely cannot tell if the only way to survive it is with Rev's immortal march, or whether jumping/rolling are supposed to do anything within From's trademark Brazilian alleyway netcode

AnonymousNeeds to be nerfed for trios. Killed them already on several runs but it wasn't satisfying at all. Took me 15 minutes to kill dogs on the latest run and half of that time my teammates where lying down with 3 bars. Wouldn't have made it without Noklateo buff which is essentially mandatory now since ED Libra. Honestly can't imagine fighting Gladius in trios with any other characters besides Ironeye and Revenant (ult and holy spells are super clutch)

AnonymousI have had zero luck proccing sleep on this thing despite a 154 resistance

AnonymousInteresting fact, if you fight with this Triplet Doge or artificially created killing machine Radagolstor, Lord of Ninder without music, the explosion of their AOEs has some creepy eerie sound like scream or Atomic Station alarm buzzer

AnonymousED Gladius deals craploads of damage. Fire and affinity damage negation are your good friends in this fight. The boss doesn't seem to have much HP, so him dealing high damage actually feels fair.

AnonymousThem using Heolstor's nuke felt like a message that everdarks aren't done yet and we will definitely get enhanced Heolstor, just not any time soon. This fight didn't feel like a grand final battle. Not copium surely

AnonymousI was hitting the Everdark version with Dragon King's Cragblade after it merged and each hit was making a very specific noise, different from the usual. A power up buff appeared on his HP bar. Does someone knows anything about it and if there is relation?

AnonymousRegular Gladius is your wakeup boss.
Everdark Gladius is your final exam boss. You have Multiple enemies/single enemy, aggro focus, coordinated attacks, grabs, Fulghur's sweeps (except fire), Heolstor's Rift-closing combos, plenty of rollcatchers, a lot of AoEs combos and zoning attacks. Gladius can even buff itself up 3 times before going through with a combo. I played against it as solo Ironeye and I got one-shot 3 times after it merges. Even after it splits again, it starts using a combo where the first 2 dogs distract you while the the third blast the ground with fire. Absolute fuckin' joy to fight against. Definitely worth the wait and a proper step-up/closing after that fun and sweaty ED Libra fight.
Anonymouslooks like it has no big weird gimmicks, so it might be easier than others for that alone. But it def seems more enjoyable.

AnonymousA very solid Everdark. Iterates on the design without overcomplicating it or adding silly nonsense, and looks rad as hell. In the top 3 imo.

AnonymousThis was a breath of fresh air after the agony that was Everdark Libra, who I hope they balance soon with a patch. Hell, his relic is not actually a bad one, unlike Libra's, depending on the kinda build you're going for. Could definitely work on a Wylder or Raider.

AnonymousThe Everdark version really handed out that "DEFEAT" screen. Felt like the ball when a group of dogs play fetch.

Anonymous
AnonymousI don't want to get my hopes after the disappointment that was Libra everdark, but I pray ts is peak to save us from the last few mid everdarks

Anonymous"I think I'll run some Gladius to shake the dust off before his everdark drops"

The ironeye ragequits after dying to demi human queen.
The Wylder is using incantations.
"Aaand that's enough Gladius practice."
AnonymousThe satisfaction of stopping a wolf gank attack with a perfectly lined ironeye mult

Anonymouswhy cant i find the name of the boss move where purple smoke comes out of their mouths then he grabs the players, chomps them, then smashes them on the ground and chomps them again? seems like a pretty tough attack to forgot about adding to this boss's list of attacks...

AnonymousEverdark Version will just force each player into a 1v1 with an individual dog, maybe each has slightly different attacks as well, I'll bet. That or it's just going to be an army of regular dog enemies. Maybe the bleed dogs that delete your entire health bar. Not even a unique model, just an army of bleed dogs.

AnonymousGladius has a separate set of attacks that he can use for the duration of Split Form; I would like to see a subsection for Split Form explaining the attacks used both by the sword dog and the attacks used by the other dogs, but it's fine if that is too much trouble.

AnonymousI really hope the Everdark version has the three dogs grow three heads each, then split into 9 dogs. I think that would be funny.

I've beat all the night lords except the final one at this point, and I really wish the night lords dropped their weapons. Wouldn't it be awesome to be able to get this guy's sword, with an L2 that lets you swing it on a chain while it's on fire?

AnonymousIf you're going at this doggo solo and especially if you don't have a decent means of holy damage, the key is playing keep away when he splits into 3. Always try to keep all 3 in your sights and back up with a shield raised, or sprint/dodge away from them any chance you get. Don't be afraid to unlock the camera here and relock when you've repositioned and have a better visual on the whole group. Just focus on pure evasion until they reform back into one. If you can manage to survive the trio a couple times you'll start to learn safe attack opportunities when they're split as you'll notice that usually only 1 dog will rush you consistently at a time if you keep your distance, while the others look menacing and occasionally throw out a synchronized fire breath or leaping bite.
Good luck out there solo players!

AnonymousIt looks like if you deal enough holy dmg to the split dogs they get some holy aura on them, when I did it to all 3 it "procs" somehow and I believe it does a chunk of dmg to it.

AnonymousPlaying Ironeye I must've put as many arrows into my downed teammates as into the boss

AnonymousThe first time i beat him i had a weird bug happen, whatever happened he wouldnt aggro on to me, i noticed this when i was wylder, and i was reviving my executor and ironeye teammates, and he would just let me rez them but then obliterate them the moment they got back up, idk what caused this but it's a pretty funny bug

AnonymousOh Gladius why do you have to look so COOL but be so ass to play against

AnonymousFrankly terrible in solo, incredibly easy until he roars in the split form and then all 3 attack you at the same time. You just have to get lucky

AnonymousKapra Demon, Gascoigne, Chained Ogre, Margit: welcome to the the great scrub filter club, dawg.

AnonymousChampions Gravetender x Sif x Radagon's Wolf incarnated as one

AnonymousIn my game against this, the AI glitches whenever there are 2 players down. After reviving us multiple times, the only teammate decided to leave us down, the AI remained glitched till it dies, didn't attack, only occasional lightning.

AnonymousJust got him after multiple tries. Having a good holy weapon and reliable teammates was the key for this win:)

Anonymoushey changed the name of the dog from syphilis to gladius, why?

AnonymousSPOILERS:
I got around 1800 murk, and two high quality stones with the suffix name "Grand" attached to the stone name in case anyone is wondering. Our team B-lined to the churches to grab the flask upgrades, and then we grinded all the way to the boss. I had a rare level weapon that was unupgraded, I was playing guardian and had a bleed whip. We all got lucky with the wepaons we got because we didn't have much time to upgrade them. After the boss was defeated I got a message on screen back at the roundtable hold saying it was the end of the play range for the demo. Best of luck to all and may the flame guide thee.
