Parrying is a Combat mechanic in Elden Ring. It can cancel certain enemies' attacks, break their stance, and make them vulnerable to a devastating critical hit. This combat action requires an appropriate shield, dagger, or a specific parry Skill (such as Carian Retaliation). Parrying is one of the main combat maneuvers players can use when going against difficult Bosses or in PvP as an effective offensive action combination with a follow-up attack. Unlike previous titles, many formidable bosses in Elden Ring require multiple successful parries in a row before their stance is finally broken to allow for a critical strike. It requires precise timing and patience to master but provides more rewarding results than regular Dodging or guard countering by giving players a chance to land a critical hit. Below are all the tips and tricks, and related equipment and information about parrying in Elden Ring. Learning how to perfrom perfect parry in Elden Ring during different situations and against different combat styles will help players become more successful during combat encounters.
NOTE: Patch 1.12 increased the hitbox generation speed for several Parry skills. The recovery of Buckler Parry was also reduced, though the patch notes incorrectly states the opposite. The active duration of Golden Parry was significantly reduced, and is not mentioned in the patch notes.

Parrying In Elden Ring
How to Parry in Elden Ring

First, you must have a Shield equipped in your left hand with Parry or another parry skill. Then when the enemy makes a parriable attack, press the skill button at just the right time so your shield is coming up just as the enemy's arm is coming down. You'll know it works if your enemy recoils and you take no damage from the attack. If you didn't get the timing quite right, your shield will still block some of the damage from the attack but the attack will continue and you'll take a big hit to your Stamina.
For most parriable enemies, a single successful parry is enough to bring them to their knees and make them vulnerable to a critical hit. Other enemies (usually bosses) must be parried multiple times before they fall. Unlike Stance damage, an enemy's parry counter doesn't decay after a period of inaction, so you can take your time between parries without fear. Be aware though that some parriable enemies won't become vulnerable to a critical at all: instead, they'll just stumble briefly, giving you time to land some normal attacks before they start attacking again.
Under the covers, each parriable attack has a certain range of frames (often only one) in its animation where it can be successfully parried. Similarly, each parry skill has a certain range of frames during its animation where it can successfully parry. If an attack's parriable frames line up with your parry frames while the attack's hitbox overlaps with your shield's, it will be parried. Because this depends so heavily on finding that moment of overlap, it's a good idea to choose a parry skill with a large number of parry frames!
What to Parry in Elden Ring
Not all enemies are parriable, nor are all attacks, even from enemies that are parriable! As a rule of thumb, the following categories are more likely to be parriable:
- Humanoid enemies. Soldiers are parriable but Giant Bats are not.
- Enemies that aren't huge. Omens are parriable but Trolls and Golems are not.
- Aging Untouchable. An enemy introduced in the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC that cannot receive damage before being parried.
- Attacks with weapons, particularly when the weapon is swung in an arc. Tree Sentinel's Halberd Combo is parriable but its Horse Bash and Charge Attack are not.
- Physical attacks. Margit's Swing Flurry is parriable, but his Hammer Smash is not.
- Flails, Whips, Shields, and Perfume Bottles cannot be parried. Colossal Swords and Colossal Weapons cannot be parried when they are held with two hands, excluding certain skills which can be parried regardless.
- Jumping Attacks from hostile players cannot be parried. Some jumping attacks from Rakshasa's Great Katana can be parried if you start the attack while you're descending, specifically the two-handed jumping light attack and the one-handed jumping heavy attack. This weapon is the only instance of parriable jump attacks in the entire game, and is likely a bug.
- Ranged attacks are never parriable, except with special parry skills.
The best way to determine whether a particular attack is parriable is to try parrying it a few times. If it seems like you're getting the timing right but the parry still isn't happening, you're out of luck.
Parrying Spells in Elden Ring

Parrying doesn't have to be limited to melee! With the Carian Retaliation skill (or the corresponding sorcery), you can parry most magical projectiles. It works a little differently than a normal parry: when a projectile hits the blue orb created by the skill, it vanishes and is replaced by three glintblades that will fire back at the enemy once they come in range. There are a few caveats, though:
- Parrying a spell won't give you an opportunity for a critical hit.
- Parrying a spell won't give you any invulnerability frames.
- Each use of the skill can only parry a single projectile. This means that parrying isn't safe if multiple projectiles are flying towards you at once, since only one of them will be stopped and the rest will still connect.
You can also parry spells with the Thops's Barrier skill (or the corresponding sorcery), but this won't create any glintblades. The only advantage is that Thops's Barrier doesn't consume any FP.
Why Parry?

Parrying isn't for everyone. It requires more precise timing than dodging or guard countering attacks and you often take a lot of damage if you get the timing wrong. Even if you nail your parries, you'll deal less total damage per critical hit than if you were using jump attacks or guard counters to try to stance break your enemy instead, since those attacks do damage even before the critical. Still, there are a few great reasons to learn to parry:
- Interrupting: Bosses in Elden Ring often make it hard to get an attack in edgewise. They hit quickly and frequently, with relatively few openings for you to counterattack. Parries can be the best way to interrupt these relentless assaults and ensure you ca safely whittle down your foe's HP.
- Crowd Control: When you successfully land a parry, you get a few frames of invulnerability where other enemies around you can't land attacks. When you land the follow-up critical hit you get even more invulnerability frames, and when that animation completes enemies around you will stumble back and give you room to escape. This makes parrying an excellent tool for dealing with groups of enemies without getting overwhelmed.
- Fun: Elden Ring is all about honing difficult skills for satisfying results, and parrying is a prime example of this. Learning all the parry timings for a challenging boss and never letting them land a hit is fun because it's such hard work at first. Once you become an experienced parrier, many boss fights start to look like a walk in the park.
Why can't I Parry?
Even long time players may find difficulty performing a successful Parry. Elden Ring has a Parry window that is easy to miss resulting in an unsuccessful parry and great potential damage. As mentioned, ensure you meet the requirements and conditions to perform this action. It requires a parry Shield and a parriable opponent. Players can use the Bosses page as reference. Each individual page will state whether the Boss can be parried or not. Players can practice parrying against both melee and magic attacks though parrying a magic attack will not allow a critical hit. Make sure you closely observe the initial attack animations of your opponent to be able to recognize these parry windows. It is likely one of these conditions aren't met resulting in unsuccessful parries. Some notes and tips have been added below for players who wish to practice the Parrying skill.
Getting Good at Parrying In Elden Ring
Here are some tips to help you improve your parrying skill:
- Practice, Practice, Practice: Mastering parries is as much a matter of building up muscle memory as it is learning to consciously do the right thing. Take the time to do dedicated parry practice to teach your subconscious just when to hit that button in order to land the parry. The woods outside Groveside Cave are perfect for this: it's full of Godrick Soldiers who have a variety of attacks, almost all of which are parriable. You can also practice on particular bosses with parry-only practice runs, where you commit to only doing damage through critical hits.
- Watch the Hand: Although it's tempting to watch an enemy's weapon when deciding when to press the parry button, it's often more reliable to watch the hand that's holding the weapon instead. This gives you a better idea of when their momentum is actually shifting towards you, which is the best indicator of when you should press the skill button.
- Notice Tells: If you're struggling to parry a particular attack, pay close attention to the enemy's entire animation leading up to that attack. Try to find a particular nuance of the animation that happens around the time you need to press the skill button, then make a couple parry attempts exactly when you see that tell. If you're too early or too late, find a different tell and try that until you find one that works consistently. For example, you might notice that parrying Tree Sentinel's Jump Attack works best if you press the button just as it pauses at the apex of its leap.
Parry Skills
While the Parry skill comes attached to a number of shields, there are a variety of different parry skills scattered throughout the Lands Between. The "vanilla" Parry skill itself even has different parry frames depending on what type of shield or weapon you attach it to!
- FP indicates how much FP is consumed when you successfully parry. Not all parry skills use FP, and those that do only consume it when the parry is successful. You can still parry even if you run out of FP—it will just behave like the basic Parry skill.
- Delay measures how many frames (at 30FPS) elapse between pressing the skill button and being able to parry an attack. Lower is better.
- Duration measures how many frames (at 30FPS) the skill is active and able to parry an attack after the delay. Higher is better.
- Recovery measures how many frames (at 30FPS) elapse after the parry frames end but before you're able to roll again. See also Recovery Frames below. Lower is better.
- Note: ms measurements in the table below are given for reference and indicate the number of milliseconds, regardless of 30fps or 60fps framerate. E.g. 500ms is one half of a second.
| Name | FP | Delay |
Duration | Recovery | Description |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8* | 4 | 6 | 13 | In addition to having the best duration of any parry skill, this can parry spells and send glintblades back at the enemy. As FP is only consumed when parrying spells, this provides the best melee-parry without additional FP cost. | |
| - | 4 133ms |
5 167ms |
12 400ms |
Has lower recovery time than all other parries. Unique to the Buckler, this is by far the best parry skill that doesn't require an Ash of War, as well as the best one available without leaving Limgrave. | |
| - | 4 | 5 | 14 467ms |
The basic Parry skill is at its best on small shields. | |
| 3 | 4 | 5 | 14 | Blocks projectiles in addition to parrying. This has better stats than the basic Parry skill when applied to a medium shield, although still worse than Carian Retaliation. Always costs FP to use. | |

Storm Wall (Projectile Deflect) |
3 | 0 | 10 | 13 | This only applies to the projectile deflection effect from Storm Wall. |
| - | 4 | 4 133ms |
15 | Daggers are your best bet if you want to parry with an offensive weapon, with better stats than a medium shield but worse than a small shield. * Throwing Blades have the same parry as daggers, but only when used in the right hand while one handed. Otherwise, it will use the animation and frame data for medium shield parries. |

Recovery Frames
Different actions take more or less time to perform after a parry. Note that left-hand attacks are only possible after parrying with a shield if you're holding that shield in your right hand.

Anonymousds1 -> parry timing too easy, most enemies are parriable
ds3 -> perfectly balanced
elden ring -> good parry timing, no enemies to parry
why? I don't understand why so little enemies/bosses are parryable like, the game, legit has a good mechanic and the devs don't let us use it. Is parrying defeating the point of hyperactive enemies?
they realized their mistake with parrying in the dlc, where they fixed it, and made parrying actually worth while...
AnonymousStraight swords are too fast to reaction parry, I can just spam the 2HR1 and it stun locks them as they attempt to parry me.

AnonymousImagine being so bad at pvp that you need parrying as a crutch. Its like the pvp equivalent of using summons. Lmoa

AnonymousI wish parrying daggers had a faster startup time like they used to in earlier games, there was a point in using them over shields for a more reactive style of parrying. I guess Thops's barrier is the new parrying dagger?

AnonymousYou shouldn't be able to parry instantly after swapping weapons.
You shouldn't be able to "hide" a parry without any kind of delay.
AnonymousDoes anyone else get the bug where after missing a parry you get killed and mom starts yelling at you to turn the game off?

Anonymousdo you get extra parry frames if you use carian retaliation on buckler or will it be the same nomatter the sheild i use?

AnonymousWas the Golden Parry Nerfed? I saw the active duration of it before was 6.

AnonymousExceptionally effective to the point that it makes dueling players and fighting enemies too direct. The vast majority of builds and weapons can be instantly shut down and enemies essentially give themselves away by how obvious their programming is designed. Parrying simply kills the fun for me.

A superior strategy for the advanced players, such a shame that most of the community couldn't achieve this greatness

AnonymousThere should be a delay after switching weapons, so you can't parry instantly after pulling a shield out of nowhere.

AnonymousThis is incorrect you can parry shields ( I was messing around with a friend)

Anonymous
AnonymousWhy can't I just parry with my weapon like in the real world? Unplayable, using a side arm or shield looks silly and wastes equip load!

AnonymousCan you not parry with the whip like in dark souls? That was my favorite

AnonymousI did a parry run recently, and it has become my favorite game mechanic. It works awesome on some tougher enemies, such as Bell Bearing Hunter (2x parry per crit), Crucible Knights, almost any invader / NPC who does not spam spells (even though Carian Retaliation really helps with it), the death knight and even some bigger bosses. It is a getting less useful in the late game though. Malenia and Radagon both are very punishing at parry attempts. The risk/reward-feeling is just a bit off. Both are just so much easier with stagger damage. I love the parry mechanic with Maliketh, but again, it's easier to just kill him directly instead of learning the hard way with almost no benefit. Rellana is comparable to Radagon and Malenia, even though she seems to be harder to stagger, so parrying gets more tempting again. But besides having to parry these three very often, their heavily delayed attacks and the fact that you can only parry some few attacks at all makes it even more risky and ask for a longer learning curve. It still is fun, but there are some bosses that i will not even bother parrying anymore.

AnonymousI love parrying, and usually it feels great. But what bothers me the most is the inconsitency of parrying possibilities in this game. Especially bosses like Radahn, Malenia and Rellana, whom you have to parry several times for one counter, only provide parrying possibilies for some few attacks. It is literally much more effective to just dodge and smack them to the ground. Takes less time, is much easier and less risky and still looks cool. I am missing the patience to learn these few moves, just to be able to say "i parried the *beep* out of this *beep*". For these bosses, it simply does not feel very rewarding until you are perfect at it (which i will never be). So i have to take revenge at the lower enemies by parrying the *beep* out out their *beep* brain! ò_o

AnonymousYou can parry most weapon attacks; The primary function of a parry is to counter a wielded weapon. For much larger enemies/bosses, just look up if they are able to be parried to know for sure (because many of them actually are).
Most importantly, it takes time and patience. Learn the timings, and do not be afraid to fail. You can always respawn. My best advice is to try something slightly different almost every time to make sure you don't get stuck without progressing your skill. Practicing this seemingly simple skill will open up many more things for you to upbuild on in this game. Just makes sure you're still having fun.
AnonymousSome things to keep in mind when parrying (in PvE at least);
>If an enemy is much larger than you, don’t even bother
>More ‘animalistic’ attacks (think biting and barging) can’t be parried
>Whips can’t be parried, same thing goes for whip-like attacks (Land Octopus tentacles for example)
>Jumping attacks can’t be parried (there are appear to be some exceptions to this, such as the jumping attacks done by hatchet-wielding Imps)
These are a few things I keep in mind when I want to do some parrying. Good luck folks!
AnonymousAparar de Espada Curva é de longe a animação mais atraente e estilosa do Elden Ring, e por conta disso é meu Aparar favorito, se você só usa um monótono Broquel e eu uso uma Espada Curva nós não somos iguais

AnonymousDoes anyone else have the bug, where if you sometimes whiff a parry, you are momentarily invulnerable? Like you take zero damage and attacks will phase through you.
It seems to happen every now and then in PvE against regular and boss enemies.
Anonymouswhat's the worst parry? I'm too good at it so I wanna handicap

AnonymousThe biggest issue with Parrying in this game is that it's mostly pointless outside of PVP or select field-bosses or NPCs. Why? Almost every boss has 2-3 parries required to get the crit. As someone who loves parrying, it became obvious how bad it was when I was fighting Malenia for the first time - 3 parries per crit? It's just far easier to equip a long weapon and get completely unrisky poke and then charged heavies on dodges. You get your crits on stance breaks rather than the super high risk 3x parries. I still use parries a lot on misbegotten, crucibles, tarnished, and random trash mobs, but it's pretty depressing that there's basically no point to doing it to bosses since they take multiple parries and stance breaks are so viable.

AnonymousThey'll probably never touch this mechanic again, but I think Carian Retaliation should be nerfed like Golden Parry as well as cost FP on whiff, and default medium parry slightly buffed to have one more active frame. Storm Wall should also have one less active frame, but still be better than Golden Parry and Carian Retaliation because physical projectile deflect isn't as useful.

Anonymousso why are the parry frames in 30fps? the game runs at 60. and no you couldnt just multiply by two, since what if im 1 frame late on the parry at 60fps, that would be 0.5 frames late in 30fps, so do i get hit or not?

AnonymousIdk if its written there, but parrying gives you certain iframes, this also happened in ds3, failing a parry right as you are being hit makes attacks (parriable as far as i know) go through you without hitting

AnonymousIdk if its written there, but parrying gives you certain iframes, this also happened in ds3, failing a parry right as you are being hit makes attacks (parriable as far as i know) go through you without hitting

AnonymousWhy didn’t they actually give thops the better startup? It would be perfectly balanced then

Anonymousdaggers: best offensive weapon for party window… me: proceed to do a partial parry, guard broken with low hp because it uses weapon/shield block stats with a debuff, and all non great/collosals have terrible block

Anonymous
AnonymousStrange number of people think that putting a special parry (golden parry, carian retalation, etc) on a small shield gives you better parry frames than putting it on a medium shield. It's exactly the same

AnonymousThere doesn't seem to be a way to parry colossal two-handed swords.

AnonymousLook, I don't care if I get downvoted into oblivion, I can live with that
Still kinda hate this "rebalance", just because it further singled out Carian Retaliation as the best parry in the game.
It's either Carian Retaliation needs a nerf or other parries, especially Golden Parry, need a buff. At the very least make it cost FP on every use, not just on successful spell parries. CR was already the best parry even pre-"rebalance" and GP was the only one who was able to contend with it, now that GP got gutted and is barely better than medium shield parries there's basically no incentive to use anything aside from CR. It is sufficiently quick, has the longest parry window, can parry spells and costs FP only if you parry a spell.
Seriously, it doesn't fells "balanced". Carian Retaliation is just better than pretty much every other parry, even buckler with it's low recovery and stamina consumption & Thops' with startup can't contend. I just do not understand how FS looked at GP, which costs FP on every use, and thought "yeah it should be barely better than medium shield cuz range OP", then looked at CR that costs FP only upon a spell parry and decided that it's fine for it to have the best frames in the game.
Anonymous
AnonymousReal question for parry bros out there: can we parry hand-to-hand attacks in PvP? Either I was bad or it requires some weird timings

Anonymous
AnonymousTIL you can parry thrown objects to prevent the payload being released.

AnonymousShame about my boy Golden Parry, but I do quite like the rebalancing. Carian Retaliation has the longest active window, Thops has the quickest windup and buckler has the quickest recovery. I think that's a nice spread of features and can be an incentive to use different parries in different set ups.

Anonymousare two handed attacks parriable in pvp? the npc outside Renalla's arena successfully parried my two handed charged heavy with a greataxe multiple times so I wonder if I can do that, since it was definitely impossible in previous games

Anonymouswhy this golden parry info is still here? they didn't change it, it is still 6 frames duration

AnonymousAre these accurate? There's an old reddit thread where parries last over 2x longer. At 60 fps 6 frames is only a tenth of a second which is less than half a roll and like a tenth of a jump. 6fps isn't worth learning

AnonymousYou need to add throwing weapon parry. Smithscript dagger can get parry AoW and its animation is different than normal dagger parries, so its frames might be different too

AnonymousHas anyone tested whether or not light greatswords can be parried?

AnonymousI've been messing around with parries and I realised that you can use parries even if you do not meet the stats for the shield or weapon with the parry skill on it. This is potentially huge for pure strength builds and low dex builds because you can use the buckler parry with less than 14 dex. It doesn't seem like you lose out on any frames if you don't meet the stat requirements.
Leveling dex makes Giant Dad cry.
Anonymous
AnonymousSo Golden Parry is just barely better than a Medium Shield Parry with the range being the only advantage, while always costing FP. But Carian Retaliation remains the same, if not better than before? That doesn't seem very balanced, the extra range on Golden is very helpful, but Carian was arguably superior even before the Golden nerf. I'm not feeling this reblanance, parrying is tight enough as it is in Elden Ring, now there's even less reason to pick anything other than Carian. At least before you could choose between range or FP efficiency/spell parries, but I guess there's a reason to try Thops' or weapon parries for style points now

I love that elden ring uses ds1's parry system, not 3.
In ds1 you had to parry the hand(holding sword) of enemy with your hand(holding shield) , in ds3 you had to parry the sword with your shield, which had much less frames and worse timing.
Even with a medium shield parry I'm parrying someone like margit and literally anyone else no diff.
Planning to parry radahn's meteor fall, sure I can
AnonymousOnly 13 recovery frames on the buckler is unhinged. It always used to be that it had the highest active frames and some of the longest recovery frames. They basically inverted that thing's strengths and weaknesses with the latest patch.

AnonymousSo I was playing around with the smithscript daggers and found out that when you put parry on them they get a parry similar to small/medium shields. I’d be interested to see whether they have the same frame data as other dagger.

AnonymousI honestly feel like dagger parries are the best. Not the best as in "it's the easiest" but the best in terms of getting better at parrying. The dagger lift and swipe helps visualize when you should parry an attack to connect with it compared to just the wide swipe of carian retaliation or golden parry. Same could be said with the buckler.

AnonymousI seriously was thinking that buckler parry was the best, so I went with it up to the Haligtree. You could imagine my reaction when I saw info on Carian Retaliation.

AnonymousCan I parry a spear? I mean, me with a buckler and the enemy with a spear. I cannot find information about

AnonymousA recent update to this page claims that Golden Parry’s active frames were halved from 6 to 3 in Patch 1.12. Where is this information from? The patch notes only say that the startup frames for some parries (not Golden) were improved.

AnonymousSo many changes to parrying recently? Did they make big changes with DLC or something?
Golden Parry is now almost the worst parry, only slightly better than medium shields/daggers, and worse than small shields. It used to be tied for best with Carian Retaliation. Also many of the start up/recovery frame timings have changed too. Was the site just wrong for all this time?
AnonymousWe need the Main-Gauche added to this page. I've seen comments claiming it has duration 9. If true, that's a 50% improvement over what we've had with the spells!

Anonymousif you need help finding the right timing: parry the hands, not the weapon

AnonymousParrying used to be my favorite mechanic in DS1, 3, and Bloodborne, but feels really inconsistent in ER. It seemed like even with slow startup for katana parry in DS3; as long as you timed it right before the strike hit you then you'd be successful. Now it feels like you have to parry before their arm even starts to come down and enemies tend to have such varied wind-up speeds it's hard to tell when they are actually going to commit. Parrying went from a reactionary skill to trial and error until you find the correct moment in their animation that they can be parried. It's still strong, but the level of effort you have to put in to use it now makes a lot of people think it's not worth the investment. All the more respect for those that can do it though. :)

AnonymousFrom my testing, it seems that the amount of damage received is reduced even if you miss the parry. The reduction is affected by the stats of the shield too, so a missed parry with a medium shield will reduce the damage more than with a small shield.

AnonymousI was so hoping FromSoftware would have added an ash of war identical in functionality to the weapon art of Uchigatana in DS3 (input R1 or R2 for repeated slashes or PARRY!) Man, why didnt the add it? :'-(

AnonymousDoes anyone knows if Carian Retaliation has different parry frames on a buckler or medium shield?

AnonymousDoes every parrying tools have same startup frame in 1.12 ?

Anonymous
Anonymous
AnonymousFrom what I've seen, all parries after 1.12 seems to have their startup all been set to 4 frames (30 FPS), though I guess some that requires FP seems to also have a separate anim that has 6 startup frames for lack FP case (maybe?). The parry frames are still unchanged, though.

Anonymous
AnonymousAfter the update 1.12 I feel like my parry timing got a lot worse, I mostly use the buckler. Anyone else? I was playing a week before the update and was doing fine, so is not lack of practice. Dunno if the update broke something, but now I need to start yhe parry a lot earlier than before.

AnonymousIf you want to learn parrying then keep a small shield or buckler equipped while you play through the game and try to parry inconsequential enemies that don’t really do much damage, like basic soldiers, as you see them. Once you get a feel for the startup and active frames you’d be surprised at how quickly parrying little idiots translates to parrying bosses

Parry: increased Parry hitbox generation speed.
Storm Wall: increased Parry hitbox generation speed.
Thops's Barrier: increased Parry hitbox generation speed.
Buckler Parry: added attack recovery time after using this skill.
According to the developers, is parrying with a dagger a parry or is it another, special parry?
AnonymousIs there any data available on the partial parry? What frames does a parry block damage partially and drain a bunch of stamina (but not cause stun)? How is that damage / stamina damage calculated? Etc. I cant find it after searching for 10 whole minutes :*(

AnonymousI'm 25 so it means I'm washed up already, parrying in this game is just so little reward for peeps who refuse to use carian retaliation or golden parry, Godfrey forbid if I decide to use medium shields too lol
Honestly it's fun but it's insanely punishing now, I think I'm gonna convert to just stance bonking everyone
Dodging can't stance-breaking enemies (resulting in RIP-osted). If you're bored with "normal gameplay" cheesing ALL enemies with weapons skills spams (or magic), do a Crit build as it will change your perspective and appreciation of the beauty of this game. There are great reasons why the Romans and Spartans kick ass with their shields. As for PvP, too bad it's a P2P connection and the latency sucks.

AnonymousIn pvp, if I see someone with a Buckler shield or attempting the parry and failing, I stop attacking normally, and just start doing jump attacks. Those CANNOT be parried, and then they got punished for it, really hard. Lots of players that try using the parry don't seem to know this, because they keep attempting the parry even if they see me jumping over and over. Some just change the shield with whatever they are using for magics, for never use the shield for the rest of the fight. In this game is way more difficult because of the jump attack, maybe in the future the can be parried, who knows...

AnonymousYeah, worthless mechanic. You actually need to practice and understand how to use it. That makes it worthless. You should only play this game in ways that a lobotomized chimpanzee could replicate. Otherwise you're just wasting your time, really.

AnonymousAbsolutely useless game mechanic. All it does is make every enemy 10x more difficult. You’re better off dodging and countering for stance breaks. Sad because it’s sounds cool when you hit it but it’s completely unviable strategy for 99.9% of the player base.

AnonymousBuckler parry (carian retaliation isnt real) has the same startup as ds3 katana parry, if ya wanna feel like home then use the buckler

Anonymousagora eu tenho uma duvida teria como dar parry em wapon art?

Anonymous
AnonymousAh so I wasn't crazy thinking the medium shield was slow af and I had to parry way earlier

Anonymousthis is exclusively a pvp mechanic. guard counters are simply better in almost every situation in pve. if its only good against crucible knights and bell bearing hunters then its not good.

AnonymousParrying is terrible in this game. The FS games usually lean heavily into parrying/blocking but this one doesn't in favour of rolling. Why would they severely weaken such an iconic ability?

AnonymousI wish the parry ash of wars were able to be used on regular armaments, or the regular parry ash of war had more parry frames. Sucks trying to powerstance curved swords and having only 5 party frames.

AnonymousI thought the parry on the ****ler has one more active frame than small shield parry?

AnonymousNever even tried using shields in like 900 hours, but when I did...man, parrying is SO satisfying (guard counters too). It's hard to get the timing down but it's worth it. Just got to the capital at lvl30 with a +3 and thanks to carian retaliation the knights are no problem anymore. Fun way to play

AnonymousI was told that parrying collosal weapons when two handed is not possible (pvp) and found an online article that said the same thing, I came here to verify but found no mention of it other than a comment wishing the buckler could do so.

Anonymousit feels like the smaller the (weapon using) enemy is the better parry works. Since the dodging is fun here too its this time rly a sometimes this sometimes this and this is amazing :D

AnonymousNo está dicho, pero los ataques a dos manos (no habilidad de carga) , con armas ultra pesadas, NO pueden ser paradas, cumple la lógica de DS3

AnonymousI wish more bosses were parryable like in DS3, there doesn’t feel like much utility to parrying outside of pvp and basic enemies anyway

AnonymousIn PvE-decent until lategame/endgame where every boss 2-3 shots you at 60 vigor.
In PvP-it's annoying to pull off due to latency, but 1 tapping some poor dudes or dudettes is always fun.
If engaging in jolly cooperation-beware the host's latency will affect your parry timings.
Just make it like in Sekiro without any start up frames. Hit that button precisely when the enemies' weapon hits you.

Anonymousonly single digits in active frames and only 5 of them are halfway viable what a joke

Potentially a hot take, but I think all forms of parry should have the same startup frames as Carian Retaliation/Golden Parry

Anonymousreally wish you could put golden parry or storm wall on daggers

AnonymousThe Abyss Watcher's sword was so cool to have a built-in parry. I hope the DLC includes something like that.

AnonymousWhy even have parry on weapons if you’re going to give it an impossibly small window? It’s infuriating.

Anonymous

why do i feel like parrying in this game is SIGNIFICANTLY easier than in ds3. maybe its just bc of ds3 overalls clunkines or are the parry windows just bigger here
