Dark Moon Greatsword is a Greatsword in Elden Ring. The Dark Moon Greatsword scales primarily with Intelligence, Dexterity and Strength and is a staple weapon, in one way or another, in all From Software games.
A Moon Greatsword, bestowed by a Carian queen upon her spouse to honor long-standing tradition.
One of the legendary armaments.
Ranni's sigil is a full moon, cold and leaden, and this sword is but a beam of its light.
Where to Find Dark Moon Greatsword in Elden Ring
The Dark Moon Greatsword weapon can be found at the following location:
- Found below the Cathedral of Manus Celes after giving Ranni the Dark Moon Ring. [Elden Ring Map here]
- You obtain the Ring by progressing Ranni's Quest, which is complex and requires you to do quite a lot of content:
- Radahn must be defeated so that the stars may once again move across the sky (with one crashing into Limgrave and unlocking access to Nokron.
- Retrieve the Fingerslayer Blade from the now accessible eternal city (the chest containing the item can only be opened once you have talked to Ranni at her Rise to join her cause).
- Return the blade to Ranni, and you will gain access to Ainsel River main from the teleporter located in Renna's Rise.
- Pick up the Ranni doll ahead of where you were teleported to, and talk to it three times from the nearby site of grace to be enlisted to fend off the Baleful Shadows located deeper in past Nokstella. Upon defeating said enemy the player is given the Discarded Palace Key.
- Use this key to unlock the chest that houses the Dark Moon Ring, located in the Raya Lucaria Grand Library.
- The last step is to continue past where you fought the Baleful Shadows, through the Lake of Rot to the Grand Cloister, down to the end where a coffin can be interacted with by the edge of a waterfall. This will take the player down to fight Astel, Naturalborn of the Void. After beating this boss a seal will block further progress to the elevator to the Moonlight Plateau until the player acquires the Dark Moon Ring.
- At this point head to The Cathedral of Manus Celes, carefully falling down the into the cave where Ranni is located with her dead Two Fingers, progressing through the interactions and dialogue with her to be given the Dark Moon Greatsword.

Elden Ring Dark Moon Greatsword Notes & Tips
- Weapon Skill: Moonlight Greatsword
- This weapon cannot be infused with Ashes of War
- Can't be enchanted with Magic or boosted by Consumables.
- Dark Moon Greatsword can be upgraded by using Somber Smithing Stones
- This weapon has a unique R2, which fires a projectile when buffed by its skill.
- The projectile does 22 stance damage, or 35 when charged.
- The damage scales with weapon upgrade level and INT.
- The buffed R2's Projectile is affected by Magic Scorpion Charm, Godfrey Icon, Warrior Jar Shard and Shard of Alexander talismans. It is NOT affected by the Axe Talisman nor the Spiked Cracked Tear.
- With Update 1.07, the weapon's blade itself was given damage detection while imbued with it's skill. This allows the Axe Talisman and Spiked Cracked Tear to activate if using charged attacks against an enemy if the blade is within distance.
- As of 1.12 the second R1 onehanded swing has a motion value of 68, meaning it is doing 68% of the weapons AP. Every other Greatsword has a motion value of 101.
- Sell Value:
1000 - The Dark Moon Greatsword is part of a reoccurring sword archetype of weapons appearing in other FromSoftware titles. It debuted in the King's Field series as the Moonlight Sword, and has since appeared in the Armored Core series as the MOONLIGHT laser blade, in Demon's Souls as the Large Sword of Moonlight, in the Dark Souls trilogy as the Moonlight Greatsword, and in Bloodborne as the Holy Moonlight Sword.
- One of the 9 Legendary Armaments.
- NOTE: As of Patch 1.09, the scaling values of this weapon were changed. Please refer to the Upgrades Table of this weapon below. Additionally, speed, range, recovery time and guard counter speed of Greatswords weapons has increased.

AnonymousCan't believe this sword came into my possession completely organically, without even knowing its existence. I was just about to leave that high altitude plateau and saw the pit in the chapel. Looked seemed like a fatal drop, but took my chances.
The vision of doll Ranni at the end of the tunnel, my oh my. 10/10 discovery.
AnonymousMan, people will whine about anything. They actually made the sword powerful this time around and people are still not satisfied. We get it, it's not a trick weapon, who cares, go play bloodmeme where it looks cool but is at best mediocre.

AnonymousYou can keep the buff active infinitely without Mind investment if you use the Blessed Blue Dew talisman.

AnonymousI just wish it didn't look like a giant plastic paddle... Bloodborne's was so perfect...

Anonymous
AnonymousWhat's the fastest method to get this?
I start vagabond then get bhf upgrade it to +4 using iji and use that + blood flame to kill Radahn and astel but I honestly think it's still slow, any faster method?

AnonymousI'm going to be very disappointed if I don't receive this on my wedding day

Anonymousshould have been the brightsun greatsword, longer stronger and more elements like fire

AnonymousThe projectiles desperately need some hitbox improvements aswell as a speed and lifetime buff

AnonymousShould really be a second big red glaring NOTE: "As of patch 1.12 here lay the victim of a most brutal and senseless murder, pointless butchery really. it is now beyond useless for all of the drawbacks that it already had, it used to be a strong weapon. Let us forever remember what we lost and mourn forever the inhuman folly of the thoughtlessly cruel."

AnonymousIt really is harder to get to and use in every game, and now Heolstor uses it against you. (And of course when HE uses it, it can cut holes in the sky.)

AnonymousCool sword, almost makes it worth it to do that boring ass quest for the weird blue woman

AnonymousThis should not skale with int , it should be DEX only #DexOnTop

AnonymousThe skill is wasted potential man. They couldv'e made it do a DarkMoon AOE explosion similar to the Grant in DS1 as you raise the sword to buff, or make it a thrusting Moonlihgt attack like in DS3 that also buffs the weapon.
Simply lifting the weapon up to buff with no attack or follow-up is sad, but I guess it would be way too good of a weapon then.
Anonymousanyone else end up on the nightreign wiki if trying to click on another greatsword in the bottom menu on this page?

Anonymous"Even in this darkest of nights, I see... the moonlight..."

AnonymousI'm out of FP, but I'm not out of options

AnonymousI remember picking up this sword 2 years ago but never had the chance to use it much since the save got deleted. Now doing a intellingence character, and it became one of my favorites! I don't know how busted it was, because now it feels strong af.
How can anyone say this weapon is lame?? It's a freaking enchanted sword that shoots frosty waves !!!!

AnonymousSomehow feels like the most badass weapon in the game. I equip this muhfucka, slap on the fingerprint set, and charge up the mountain-tops of the giants clapping every one or thing in my path, and when worst comes to worst, I have Moonveil (grins sinisterly*) in my back pocket; itching for blood.

AnonymousWhat's the fastest way to obtain this? (Glitchless of course)
My way is starting vagabond, putting some required stats in Dex to wield BHF and some in faith and arcane for bloodflame, then getting that to +6, get strength and Dex tear, get strength and Dex talisman, get golden bow aow, then finally killing radahn, skip everything else, kill mimic tear, then blaidd, and finally astel, and got the weapon at around 3hrs, not the best I've got many deaths during it but I'm sure this isn't the fastest way to do it

AnonymousIt's without question one of the best pve weapons in the game, but I
It rly bothers me that the hitbox of its r2 projectile is significabtly smaller than the visuals would suggest, so i wish fromsoft would change that. Also a small projectile speed aswell as lifetime buff wouldn't hurt either and make its signature feature more comfortable to use both in pve and pvp.

AnonymousThey keep nerfing and reducing the moonlight greatsword's abilities in every single game, from the AoEs of its projectiles to its ability to free-aim to even being able to fire projectiles without buffing it, in Elden Ring 2 you probably won't be able to swing it

AnonymousReading the comments here I'm kinda glad I never touched this before the nerf. Right now I'm running 80int plus the minimum stats to wield and this sword is strong and fun to use. Not doing anything crazy, it's just a common sense build that works. I don't even run a catalyst, this thing is the closest I've ever gotten to casting a spell in these games. Is it the most broken thing in the game? No and I'm happy with it. Only complaint with this setup is that I really do feel it when I run into something magic resistant, haven't figured out a good damage alternative on this int only build.

AnonymousI don't think Heolstor wielding dark moon Greatsword simply just a reuse by Fromsoftware. His greatsword completely different than normal dark moon greatsword. Only spouse of Carian family could receive dark moon greatsword so he must have connection with Carian family

AnonymousThe implications is massive with Heolstor canonically wielding this weapon

AnonymousIs it overused? Yes. Is it just about a staple on most INT builds? Yeah.
Am I going to use it and suggest all INT builds get it? UH -HUH, you bet your sweet ass I am!
Anonymousyou know it's the darkest timeline for fromsoft games when even the mlgs has to succumb to the l2 mind virus and forces you to spend 32 fp and stand still for 3 seconds just to use its most unique aspect for not even 2 minutes

AnonymousThis weapon has hidden arcane scaling parameter I don't see anyone talking about... On my 80 int/arc build it was doing considerably more damage than on 60 int build. It also has INSANE synergy with offhand cold smithscript dagger. Hope that helps.

AnonymousThey nerfed this weapon for people to use others weapons lol i hate nerfes

Anonymousgot %30 dmg nerf back in dlc release. dogshit weapon, claymore+int aow better

Anonymous
AnonymousFromsoft's checklist on How to instantly make a cool weapon
Step 1: greatsword(it has to be a gs)
Step 2: make it throw projectiles
Step 3: ???
Step 4: profit.
AnonymousMax out INT, then the ratio is 3 STR : 2 DEX under it for max output

AnonymousGreat weapon, but godang is it boring, you just R2 spam everything, and apart from that the moveset itself is kinda bland, also the skill buff is tediously short, it seems to go away just about when you need it most.

Anonymous38 INT requirement is a crime. If I wanna use a GREATSWORD, why would I need more INT than STR? They could drain more FP with the skill and decrease the INT requirement to 25. If I had 38 INT I'd prefer to cast sorceries rather than using a heavy weapon. It's ridiculous to use this in one hand and a staff in the other. I would accept this 38 INT crime if this sword was a catalyst like a staff with the skill "spell casting" to use the sorcery enabled with LT/L2.

AnonymousI used to be a bonker before, I worshiped zweihander. But after a amazing experience with katanas and curved swords, now I'm addicted to fast and long melee weapons, even the morning star is my weapon of choice to attack the catacombs. I'd appreciate a smaller version with the size and weight of a long sword.

AnonymousYes I know it's overrated and ****ing op with a charge attack build
But I don't care, swords that throw projectiles are too much fun, stormblade for example is also absolutely busted and is a DPS monster, they're just too much fun
AnonymousER is my first Fromsoft game, the only other was DS3, so I don‘t have much to compare this with. But to compare the ones I know, I do prefer this one. I like the look, especially while buffed. And the damage is incredibly high and easy to buff (shard of Alexander, Godfrey icon, axe talisman up close, magic scorpion charm and magic shrouding cracked tear), and even does frostbite. On the other hand, Moonlight GS doesn‘t have to be buffed for the projectiles, and its skill is very powerful. But the durability system is also pretty shitty.
Overall, both are cool but I prefer Darkmoon GS
AnonymousWhile the agree that the older versions were more visually impressive (and more fun to use in the case of the Bloodborne), but I actually really appreciate that they clearly made an effort to adapt this in a way that feels natural to Elden Ring's world rather than just throw the Dark Souls version in there with no explanation.

AnonymousOf the all variants in the franchise this the most boring one gameplay wise it’s only heavy attacks that shoot beams and only horizontally instead of mix up between vertical and horizontal, they could tweak it a bit with jumping attacks or running heavies or back steps shooting beams

AnonymousThis weapon is just so cool with the way it looks when buffed.
I love it when you raise it in the air for the weapon skill.
Peak weapon 10/10.
AnonymousMiyazaki-kun: Alright, my dogs. We need to make a Moonlight Great Sword of ER. Any ideas of what kind of name should we do, if it's not to keep the same name?
Intern: Boss! How about we name it as "Guiding Moon Sword" or "Cold Moon Great Sword"?
Miyazaki-kun: Hmm... I like the latter one. We will make it.
Director: No, I want a new name.
Miyazaki-kun: But this is MY game, punk. I will take that name and do it here. You can't stop me.
Director: But I am paying your bills and taxes here. You know I can fire you, right?
Miyazaki-kun: Sir, how about we make it Dark Moon Greatsword?
Director: Excellent choice. Have a cookie.
And then, this sword was done. Sad story, yeah.
AnonymousMost over-rated weapon in DS/BB/ER.
Yes, its true for every version, but especially true in this game with so much freedom to make your own weapon.
Be original.
AnonymousCan someone please tell me the exact intelligence scaling on this?

AnonymousUnfortunately the ugliest Moonlight Greatsword in the franchise. Still absolutely peak weapon tho

Anonymous
AnonymousIt’s kinda unfortunate that the only real references I can make are from Ludwig or the mad king. It’s like what, the duke’s pet doesn’t say anything, death doesn’t say anything, and demon’s souls have SLUGS, and no one will know any kings field references

Anonymous
AnonymousYou'd be surprised how useful this is to clear mons with its heavy attack as a mage build. Each charged beam does like 3000 damage you are effectivly clearing the room with 32 FP that lasts long enough,

AnonymousArguably the best weapon in the game. Among top 3 in the base game, at least.
It has a good moveset, the range is not bad, good AR damage, frostbite buildup which is already amazing, and then the wonderful ash of war, of course.
Not to mention, you get this weapon from doing the best questline in the game. Also, I think hybrid builds such as STR/INT or STR/FAITH are some of the most fun in the game, and this weapon is perfect for that.
Overall, should you complete Ranni's questline and get your hands on this 10/10 legendary armament, give it a try, will you?
AnonymousIf you use this weapon you have no skill. Use a real weapon like Ancient Meteoric Ore Great sword.

I don't know what people are mad about. Calling THIS mediocre? Seriously? I simply demolished Mohg, Malenia, Dancing Lion, Rellana, and Messmer with this thing, omw to Consort Radahn. Yeah it got nerfed, but it's far from mediocre. The frost hydrogen bomb in my right hand is still as powerful as it ever was.

AnonymousBeen thinking of using this weapon for a little bit since I’ve increased my Intelligence and Mind over time (was monke bonk only beforehand) but I’m skeptical as reading through the comments here I’ve seen people up and down talking about nerfs and whatnot.
I wanted to use this sword and its skill to grant me access to a powerful ranged option that I can 2-hand (I prefer 2-handing all my melee weapons). For ranged options I currently use a bow and that new DLC staff that allows you to use both Sorceries and Incantations (Intelligence and Faith leveled accordingly!). The downsides of this is that the bow... is a bow (it works, just not very well) and switching to the staff and the spell I need is a pain in the ass on controller (made worse by a condition that results in slightly underdeveloped hand-eye coordination).
I will conduct some tests of my own later today but I wanted to check here anyway, curious as to how you guys use thing weapon!
AnonymousQuestion for those more knowledgeable than me. Would u still consider this OP if the player never uses the laser R2? I'm asking because I used this in a few random playthroughs just using the jump attack lol. I thought it was pretty decent but not really amazing. I didn't really bother optimizing with the proper talismans either cause I didnt wanna go to the trouble of finding them. Just curious what other people would think

AnonymousIf Ludwig von Bethoven was alive today, and played this game, he would definitely shoot that famous phrase that he once said in his consert in Japan at 1897:
"Ah... You were here all along... My true mentor... My guiding moonlight..."
AnonymousThe imprisoned King of Quincies regains his pulse after 900 years...

AnonymousI never used this pre-nerf, but post-nerf it is still really strong. The beams absolutely trivialize most mobs, including knights and omens. You can just stunlock them from distance. It also wrecks drakes and gargoyles. Paired with greatblade phalanx you can script some bosses, particularly Morgott. The only boss I had more trouble with than normal was Maliketh. I really needed a stance break at the start of P2 to beat him.
While they nerfed it pretty hard on paper, it’s still one of the best weapons in the game in practice, and it’s a new favorite of mine.
AnonymousIt's now pretty mediocre for kiting mobs to kill them while taking minimal damage. It is still really good for poise and creating more punishes on bosses.

Anonymousman i wish this game had a moonlight greatsword, kinda like what bloodborne had

AnonymousI wish the ash was JUST the sword beam and the actual heavy was like the bloodborne one.

AnonymousThey weakened it quite a bit, but when you are the equivalent of a nuke condensed into a sword, weakening you will still mean you are quite strong, just not "Im the best choice almost all the times" strong.

AnonymousIn Radahn consort, I used this with Tawley and carian phalanx, and we broke his posture like 3 times in my winning try

AnonymousThe only sword that I would like to play like those circus guys.

AnonymousIf I have a big box, fill it with water, and stab a knife in the box, and leave it in the freezer...
Will it make a Dark Moon Dagger?
AnonymousBoth this and the Golden Order Greatsword should have done pure Elemental damage, this one pure Magic and the latter pure Holy (which also should have scaled with both Intelligence and Faith, because I mean come on, it's the GOLDEN ORDER Greatsword!) This would have been an even stronger thematic tie between the two weapons beyond them both being wedding gift greatswords that shoot energy waves. Hell, if the DS1 Moonlight Greatsword could do pure Magic damage, and they even gave us the Coded Sword and Cipher Pata which do pure Holy damage, I don't see any reason why this couldn't have also done pure Magic damage.

AnonymousIst diese Schwert mit seine schaden gut oder ist der Schwert nur gut wegen seine Frostbite?

Anonymousit's all fun and games until miquella and radahn hear the tarnished say "Aah, you were at my side, all along. My true mentor... My guiding moonlight..."

AnonymousI imagine the smurf simps react like ludwig phase one when they hear a word against her, and pose like his phase two intro when they finish their novel length reply

AnonymousHonestly every day I get more convinced that the best version of this sword was the Demon's Souls version where it didn't have any projectiles at all and was just an extremely light, pure magic damage greatsword with innate shield piercing. It's revolved around its projectiles ever since it got them and in every game since Dark Souls those projectiles have just gotten worse and worse.
