Death Knight is a Boss in Nightreign. The Death Knights are humanoid soldiers who wield various weapons and combine quick melee attacks with powerful lightning spells and delayed strikes to catch players off guard. Bosses are challenging foes that players will face at the end of each day. They have unique move sets, weaknesses, resistances, skills, and abilities. Players have to coordinate attacks to take them down and progress forward.

The knight, once the personal guard of Godwyn, was also the protector of the Prince of Death's cadaver surrogate.

Negations (or Absorptions)

The negation numbers are the % of your damage that gets blocked. For example, if a negation is 60, 40% of that damage by that type will go through and 60% will be negated. Bigger number = less damage. A negation of 100 means no damage goes through, and a negation of -100 mean the enemy takes 2x damage from that source. 0 means damage goes pretty much as is.

Resistances

The resistance numbers are the buildup amount to trigger it. For example, if a resistance is 100 you must deal 100 points of the given buildup to trigger it. Note that these go down over time, and increase each time the effect procs. The values after the "/"s indicate the increased resistances after each successive proc.

Elden Ring Nightreign Death Knight Boss Guide

Death Knight Fight Strategy

Melee Users

The Death Knights can be particularly hard to deal with, not because of their moveset, but because you'll have to deal with three of them all at once. First, you’ll fight one wielding Twin Axes. After that, you’ll face three more: two with Longhaft Axes and one with Twin Axes. It's recommended that you play in a team, ideally with a Scholar, to make the fight easier. If you're in a team, try to separate the Death Knights and engage them individually in 1v1s with your teammates. This allows you to focus on one knight at a time, and once a knight is defeated, those who finished can assist with the others.

The fight starts with a single Death Knight wielding Twin Axes, which should be manageable with coordinated burst damage if your team is appropriately leveled, ideally around level 7. After defeating it, three more Death Knights spawn at the same time. While their attacks are telegraphed, they’re designed to catch players who spam dodges, and the Longhaft Axe and Twin Axes basic attacks have similar properties but different animations. It's especially important to watch out for cues where they infuse their weapons with lightning, as these are much more dangerous than their normal attacks.

One key move to watch for is the Lightning Grab. The Death Knight charges in a straight line, leaving lightning trails, with a long wind-up. Dodge roll to either side to avoid it, as getting grabbed deals massive damage and heals the knight.

At a distance, Death Knights may use Knight’s Lightning Spear, summoning lightning spears in their hands and behind them. When you see a knight conjure a spear, prepare to dodge the projectiles.

Once they begin infusing their weapon with lightning, don't just mindlessly dodge roll through the attacks. Their attacks can send out waves of lightning on the ground as they swing their weapons, so dodging toward them rather than away is generally the safer option.

The Death Knights can be staggered fairly easily. As a melee player, stay close and circle around their basic attacks, then reposition behind them to land hits. Heavy attacks can stagger them during certain animations. As long as you coordinate with your team and set up 1v1 engagements with each knight, this fight isn’t too difficult for a Night 1 boss.

Death Knight Attacks & Counters

Advancing Axe Swings (Twin Axes)

The Death Knight performs a three-hit advancing slash combo, each swing moving it closer to you with a brief pause between attacks. Time your dodges and roll through each swing.

Thunder Wave (Twin Axes)

The Death Knight pulls both axes back and swings twice while advancing, similar to its standard advancing combo but with lightning waves that arc across the ground. After dodging each swing, watch for the yellow glow showing where the lightning will land, then create distance to avoid the incoming shockwaves.

Spinning Axe Wave (Longhaft Axe)

The Death Knight pulls its axe back and unleashes a wide spinning swing, sending lightning waves across the ground. When you see the axe glow and the wind-up begin, immediately back away to avoid both the swing and the lightning. You can stay close and dodge through the attack, but this is riskier because of the lightning spreading around the knight. Only attempt it if you’re confident in reading where the lightning waves will mark.

Double Advancing Swing (Longhaft Axe)

The Death Knight performs two advancing horizontal swings with its axe. The first swing has a brief delay before the second, making this sequence fairly easy to dodge.

Triple Advancing Swing (Shared)

The Death Knight performs a three-swing combo with the first two coming out quickly, while the final swing has a noticeable delay. Don’t dodge mindlessly, as this last hit can easily roll-catch you. Dodge through the first two swings immediately, then pause and wait for the delayed final attack before dodging it.

Lightning Grab (Shared)

The Death Knight readies up before charging toward you, leaving lightning trails and attempting to grab you. This attack is very linear and has a long wind-up before it advances toward you, so dodge roll to either side to avoid it. Getting grabbed deals massive damage and heals the Death Knight, so make sure to evade it.

Lunging Smash (Longhaft Axe)

The Death Knight jumps into the air and slams its axe down, creating a small lightning shockwave. The axe slam will land wherever the player's position is. Use the brief pause during its hangtime to time a dodge roll just as the axe lands.

Single Advancing Slash (Longhaft Axe)

The Death Knight charges forward and performs an upward slash. Dodge roll through the attack, then follow up with a hit or two if you’re in range.

Savage Axe (Twin Axes)

The Death Knight charges its axes with lightning and spins violently while advancing toward a target, then slams both axes to the ground. The axe swings will happen twice before the final slam. This can be followed up with some of its basic attacks, so after dodging the first sequence, be ready in case it chains another move.

Death from Above (Shared)

The Death Knight flies into the air and crashes down, creating a small AoE. When you see it take off, be ready to dodge the slam if you’re targeted.

Knight's Lightning Spear (Shared)

The Death Knights can cast an incantation to summon lightning spears in their hands and behind them. It'll then throw the lightning spear in its hand, and the rest of the lightning spears will follow. When you see it conjure a spear, be ready to dodge roll through the projectiles.

I don't know if anyone who experienced this, but I failed every single time when facing this boss solo. Not because of that they are hard, but everytime I managed to kill two out of three, the last Death Knight ran away the zones
P/s: I have already deleted Nightreign since it isn't fun after finishing all the nightlords

the comments are another proof that the average Elden Ring player (usually those who flex about beating it x hundred times), only "beats" in fact the main story bosses and skips the whole additional content. They have zero idea how to deal with Bell Bearing Hunter, Gargoyles, Death Knights, Divine Beast Warriors, etc. Because they skip or cheese them

        • Anonymous

They're way easier in solo despite what you might think. They usually attack one at a time as long as you don't attack another one and they have super low health so they're easy to get rid of fairly quickly, especially if you're using undertaker since you can get a free ult off their grabs which takes like half of their health. They're only difficult in trios because it's chaotic, their aoes can hurt you when they're aimed at others, and their grab comes out quick and can instakill most nightfarers at level 7

Death Knights are some of my favorite minor bosses in SotE but 4 in a row on night 1 is actually evil. Try to kite them in solo and they'll throw a whole lightning storm at you. Runebears and the Great Red Bear aren't much better but I'll take them and the Divine Beast Dancing Lion over getting my guts rearranged by Artorias when I just wanna fight the Dreglord.

if one person goes down in depth 5 it's a nightmare kiting these guys, otherwise they're not too bad. 800 point loss to this is avoidable if you guys with 2 bar ults stop blowing them the instant they spawn

He’s so awesome, but it makes me miss his axes & ancient lightning incant. Maybe we’ll get lucky & they’ll add SOTE weapons later

backstab or parry slop not that im complaining, these are just scary looking crucible knights, if u can easily parry Crucibles theyre pretty easy too

                  • Anonymous

As long as you and your teammates are well-coordinated they aren't too hard. Of course fighting 3 bosses at once is nothing easy and their grab makes things harder cause of how much they heal, but at the same time they don't have too much health and can be backstabbed

                    • Anonymous

This guy may just be the worst End of Day boss in existence. That grab is massively overtuned; it one-shot me as a level 10 Wylder from full health. What is balance?

Have the feeling he only spawns in solo runs? Already had like 10 multiplayer and got only bears, while solo only he spawns and delete me.
