MUST KNOW TIPS Before You Play

Elden Ring Nightreign Core Mechanics

At its core, Nightreign retains the combat mechanics from Elden Ring. If you're familiar with From Software's previous games, you'll feel right at home with backstabs, guard parries, and weapon two-handing. What makes this even smoother is that most enemies and bosses are also drawn from previous games, so if you're already familiar with their weaknesses and attack patterns, you'll have an easier time jumping in. However, the speed and intensity of combat have been ramped up significantly to accommodate the faster-paced roguelike gameplay.

  • Faster Movement: Without the need for a spectral steed, players can sprint and vault across the map with greater mobility, quickly transitioning from combat to exploration. The emphasis is on high speed, keeping combat fast-paced and exhilarating.
  • No Fall Damage: Gone are the days of cautiously navigating cliffs and ledges. In Nightreign, you can jump and mantle over obstacles without fear of taking fall damage, encouraging rapid movement across the world.
  • Roguelike Combat Flow: The game's roguelike nature means you're not expected to meticulously plan each battle. Enemies quickly become fodder as you level up fast through combat, which shifts the experience from tense encounters to fast-paced action. The focus is on surviving multiple encounters rather than worrying about every enemy's move.
  • No ammo limit: In Elden Ring's Nightreign, arrows and other ranged ammunition have unlimited supplies, meaning you don't need to worry about running out of arrows or other projectiles. This applies to all Nightreign characters, regardless of which character you choose.

Elden Ring Nightreign Heroes/Nightfarers

In Nightreign, you won't create your own character. Instead, you'll pick from a roster of predefined heroes. Each hero has a unique playstyle and skillset that can completely change the approach to combat:

  • Wylder: A traditional armored knight with a grappling hook and a long sword, Wilder excels in close-quarters combat with high mobility.
  • Duchess: A fast, magic-infused scout who excels in dodging and dealing burst damage. Duchess can reverse time on enemy attacks to deal massive damage, making her effective for quick team coordination.
  • Guardian: A tanky, bird-like character that can fly and perform devastating dive-bomb attacks. Guardian's ability to boost defenses while dealing damage makes him essential in team-based combat scenarios.
  • Ironeye: An archer who never misses a foe's weakness, controls enemies from a distance. His Marking skill, injures and pressures the enemy, greatly disrupting their poise and creating openings to exploit. His art Single Shot fires a supersonic arrow that pierces through every enemy and obstacle, ensuring no escape.
  • Raider: A seafarer who is resilient and unyielding in battle, doesn't flinch at minor attacks, and rampages through enemies. His skill, Retaliate, strikes back with a powerful blow that cannot be interrupted by enemy attacks. His art Totem Stela summons the colossal gravestone that serves as an attack to dispel enemies, acts as a wall to block projectiles, and amplifies the strength of allies through its protective aura.
  • Revenant: A summoner who can conjure phantoms and raise the dead, and coordinate attacks with them.
  • Recluse: A fragile but powerful mage who absorbs elemental affinities from enemies to unleash devastating elemental attacks. The Recluse requires precision and strategy, making them a challenging yet rewarding character to master.
  • Executor: A katana-wielding, parry-focused fighter who excels in one-on-one combat. Focused on precise parries and deflections, Executor is a formidable damage dealer in close combat.

Dynamic Combat in Elden Ring Nightreign

The three-player co-op system introduces a new level of strategy and camaraderie. Working together is essential, especially as you face increasingly challenging bosses. Here's how co-op combat works in Nightreign:

  • Character Synergy: Each player has a distinct character with unique abilities that complement one another. For example, Guardian can use his aerial dive to deal damage and boost allies' defenses, while Duchess can reverse time and reapply damage buffs in key moments.
  • Reviving Allies Through Combat: Unlike many other games where a revive button is used, Nightreign introduces a quirky mechanic: you revive fallen teammates by attacking them. It's a cool twist that forces players to stay in the action and think quickly to save their teammates. In addition to that, Revenant's ultimate art Immortal March can also raise the fallen teammates.
  • Loot Sharing: Combat rewards are shared among players, though high-value drops are individualized. You'll need to work together to grab the best loot, creating a collaborative atmosphere that elevates combat.

Solo combat is still possible in Elden Ring, you can set "Multiplayer" to "Single Player" under Match Making settings in the Roundtable Hold. However, this will make the game much more challenging.

Roguelike elements in Elden Ring Nightreign

The roguelike structure of Nightreign means that the combat experience is always fresh and unpredictable. Each run offers new challenges, including randomized loot and encounters with different bosses and enemies. Here are some important elements that shape combat:

  • Session-Based Gameplay: The game structures each playthrough as a three-day expedition, culminating in a battle against a final boss on the third night. This session-based approach is a core Roguelike mechanic, where each run is a self-contained challenge with a clear endpoint. Players must manage resources, survive environmental threats, and prepare for the boss within this timeframe. If the team fails—such as being downed during the night—the expedition ends, and players must restart from the beginning.
  • Progression system: Nightreign includes a meta-progression system through "relics" earned during runs. These relics provide bonuses, such as enhanced abilities or equipment, that carry over to future expeditions, making subsequent attempts easier or offering new strategic options.
  • Dynamic Boss Fights: Each day ends with a unique boss fight, which can range from classic Elden Ring monsters like Margit the Fell Omen to new threats. In between, you'll encounter random enemies and minibosses, keeping you on your toes.
  • Loot as Strategy: Combat rewards players with a huge variety of loot, including weapons with different affinities like fire, ice, or poison. This means you can craft your character build on the fly, adding flexibility and replay value to each run. You're encouraged to adapt your combat style based on the loot drops, further enhancing the strategy of each session.
  • Dynamic Map Layout: Limveld, the primary setting of Elden Ring Nightreign, is a procedurally generated open-world area derived from Limgrave in the original Elden Ring. The layout of Limveld changes with each game session, ensuring that players encounter different terrain, points of interest, and challenges every time they begin a new run. (see Locations for more info)
  • Random Events: Elden Ring Nightreign incorporates a variety of random events that add unpredictability and depth to each run. As players explore Limveld, they encounter dynamic activities that can significantly impact their progress. These events include: Nightfarer Invasion, Boss Invasion, Volcanic Eruption, The Locusts Plague, Night Horde, Curse of the Demon, Giant Bubbles, etc. (See Events page for more info)
  • Dynamic Gameplay Area: Nightreign features a shrinking gameplay area in Limveld that adds time pressure and forces players to adapt. This area resets after defeating a minor boss at the end of each in-game day, providing a new playable space for the next day. This dynamic element ensures that players must constantly move and engage with the environment, enhancing the Roguelike challenge of adapting to changing circumstances.

  • Spiritstream Jump: Press the [X] button while on top of a Spiritstream to do a Spiritstream Jump, which enables you to jump greater distances.
  • Backstep: Pressing the [◯] button while the left stick is not tilted will cause a quick backstep. Pressing the [R1] button after a backstep will turn it into a dash attack.

Attack/Defense Basics

  • Locking To a Target: Pressing the [R3] button will lock on to a nearby enemy. While an enemy is targeted, you can change the target by moving the right stick. When the target is locked on, you move with the target always in front of you.
  • Right-Hand Armament Action: Press the [R1]/[R2] buttons to attack with the weapon equipped in your right hand.
  • Left-Hand Armament Action: Press the [L1] button to attack with the weapon equipped in your left hand.

Special Attacks

Character Skills/Ultimate Arts

You can hold down the [△] button and press the [L2] button to use a Character Skill, or hold down the [△] button and press the [R2] button to use an Ultimate Art.

Skills

Equip a weapon that comes paired with a Skill and press the [L2] button to activate it. When carrying weapons with Skills in each hand, the left armament will be prioritized, but you can switch to the right hand by using two-handed mode in order to activate that weapon's Skill. If you have no armaments equipped in the left hand, depending on the armament equipped in the right hand, its Skill might be used in both two-handed or one-handed modes.

Depending on the Skill, it might be possible to unleash several derivative attacks by pressing the [R1] / [R2] / [L2] buttons after activating the Skill. The FP gauge decreases when using Skills. If the FP gauge is reduced to 0, it will not be possible to activate any Skills.0

Guard Counters

Pressing the [R2] button immediately after guarding an enemy attack will create a guard counter attack that can easily break the enemy's stance.

Dual Weapon Attacks

Pressing the [L1] button when both hands are equipped with a weapon of the same category will perform a special attack.

Stance Breaks & Critical Hits

The enemy's stance might break depending on the attack. Pressing the [R1] button after parrying, behind an enemy, or against a fallen enemy will cause a Critical hit. Some enemies can't be parried, and some enemies can't be hit with a Critical hit even if you are behind them. The enemy's stance is more likely to break if you press the [R2] button while jumping to do a Jump Attack. Hold down the [R2] button while jumping to do a Charge Attack.

Other Actions

Switching Equipment

You can use the Equipment Menu to switch between what you have equipped and what you want to use instead. Use the ← directional button to change the left-hand weapon, the → directional button to change the right-hand weapon, the ↑ directional button to use an item, and the ↓ directional button to change the item. You can move items (or magic) to the first slot by holding down the ↑ (or ↓) directional button.

Switching Between One-Handed and Two-Handed

While holding down the [△] button, press the [R1] button to switch the right-hand weapon and the [L1] button to switch the left-hand weapon to two-handed. If you hold the weapon with both hands, you will not be able to use the weapon in the other hand, but the attack will be more powerful and it will be easier to break the opponent's guard.

Material Effects

You can pick up the materials scattered throughout the Lands Between and use them to obtain temporary effects, such as HP recovery.  Materials obtained by allies will remain active for a certain period of time, and other players can also receive these effects by being in the vicinity when the materials are activated.

Use of Sorceries and Incantations

If you want to use Sorceries or Incantations, you need to equip the corresponding catalyst (Staff or Seal). You will also need to have FP to cast them.

Attacking with Ranged Weapons

Press the [L1] button while holding ranged weapons, such as Bows or Crossbows, with both hands to enter the Precision Aiming mode, where you can take aim and attack.

Press the [R1] / [R2] button to attack with your right-hand weapon, and [L1] / [L2] to use your left-hand weapon. You can equip a shield in your left hand and press [L1] to guard. You can also use your weapon's Skill by pressing the [L2] button.

Spectral Hawks

You can find Spectral Hawks from spectral trees that grow throughout the field, and use them to travel across the map. Their moving direction can be slightly adjusted by using the Left Stick while flying.

Near Death State & Rescue (Revive)

When a player's HP reaches zero, they enter a Near Death state. In this state, a special gauge appears, the character's movement speed is reduced, and they are unable to perform any actions aside from basic movement. If the timer around the gauge fully depletes, the character dies.

Other players can revive a downed teammate by attacking them before the timer runs out to deplete the gauge. However, if they stop attacking midway, the gauge will slowly regenerate, and any progress toward revival will be lost if ignored for too long.

Each time a player enters the Near Death state, a partition is added to the gauge, making revival more difficult. This increasing gauge can be reset by resting at a Site of Grace.

near death state elden ring nightreign wiki guide 400px

Death & Revival

The player's character will lose one level upon dying, and will respawn in a nearby area. In addition to losing one level, any Runes acquired will be dropped at the place of death. These Runes will be lost entirely if the players dies again before retrieving them. If the Runes are stolen by a nearby enemy, they can still be retrieved by defeating the enemy who stole them.

Runes

Runes can be obtained by defeating enemies. Runes are used to level up your character and purchase items.

Sites of Grace

When you rest at a Site of Grace, your HP, FP, and Status Effects will be completely restored, as well as Sacred Flask uses. By interacting with a Site of Grace, you can access the level-up menu and use Runes to level up your character. The character's attributes will also increase automatically when levelling up. Each character has different attributes that are easier to increase.

Map

Can be used to check the current location of your allies and information about points of interest. It is also possible to place pins in target areas and share these locations with your allies.

Night's Tide

The Night's Tide surrounding the map will draw in as time passes. Characters who stay inside an area covered by the Night's Tide will lose HP gradually.

Elden Ring Nightreign Gameplay Tips - Beginner Guide to Help you Win

Utilize the Training Area

Round Table Hold has a training area where you can practice character moves, weapon skills, and spells to become more proficient before heading out into the landscape. It's better to learn your character's basic here than learn from the fails in actual battleground.

training ground new player tips nightreign wiki guide

Also, remember there's a new feature allows you to teleport anywhere within Roundtable Hold by bringing up the menu and selecting a location, saving time you would otherwise spend remembering where everything is. (See our Roundtable Hold page for more info, like Character Selection, Change Garb, Visual Codex, Journal, Small Jar Bazaar, and more.)

Learn to Read the Map

The map has a detailed view with location icons and elemental icons on structures that indicate the type of weaponry you'll likely receive upon defeating a boss there (e.g., fire icon for fire weapons, bleed icon for bleed weapons).

map icons new player tips nightreign wiki guide

You can pin locations on your map to indicate where you think your group should go next. Each character has their own colored pins, and if two players pin the same spot, it turns white, signifying a consensus.

Acquire and Equip Relics

equip relics new player tips nightreign wiki guide

You gain relics from runs (successful or failed) that can be equipped in the Round Table Hold. They offer various benefits like stat boosts, starting weapon effects (poison, bleed, fire), or stronger abilities for certain characters. Each Night Lord provides a specific, strong relic upon completion. (See our Relics page for more info)

Additionally,  after defeating the first boss, you can change a character's relic slots using in-game currency to allow for different relic combinations.

Avoid Easy Enemies (Mostly)

Generally, skip easy enemies to save time and focus on bosses, forts, and other locations that provide more XP and better rewards. Exceptions include quickly clearing a few at the start of a run for an initial level or using ultimate abilities to wipe out groups of easy enemies.

Prioritize Outer Map Areas First

When possible, clear objectives on the outer rim of the map before moving inward, as the collapsing ring will eventually limit access to those areas.

Obtain Talismans

obtain talismans new player tips nightreign wiki guide

Scarabs (found on the landscape or in forest areas) and a chest in the main keep at the center of the map provide talismans. Prioritize getting to the main keep chest before the end of the second day, as it reliably offers one of three talisman choices. (You can check our Talismans page for more info)

Check Merchants and Mines for Upgrades

merchant new player tips nightreign wiki guide

Merchants sometimes sell talismans, upgrade materials (including rare purple ones), and better weapons or shields. While not worth going out of your way for, check them if they are nearby. Mines usually contain a boss that, when defeated, offers purple upgrade materials. (you can check our Merchants page and Upgrades page for more info)

Pay Attention to Time

As you play, develop situational awareness to know how much time you have left and your proximity to the collapsing ring to avoid getting caught.

Adjust Cross-Region Matchmaking

In your options, decide whether to turn cross-region matchmaking on or off. Turning it off is generally recommended at launch due to the game's sensitivity to ping, which can severely affect timings for dodges, parries, and blocks.

Set Matchmaking and Group Passwords

  • Matchmaking Password: Use this to play only with people who use the exact same password, ideal for playing with specific friends or a community.
  • Group Password: This allows you to see asynchronous features of other players, such as bloodstains of those who have died. It's beneficial for playing within a community.
  • Solo combat is still possible in Elden Ring, you can set "Multiplayer" to "Single Player" under Match Making settings in the Roundtable Hold. However, this will make the game much more challenging.
  • Playing in offline mode is also a possibility. Simply use your option button, open the game's main menu and navigate to the System settings tab, then navigate down to the globe icon called "Network".  Change the third option from the top to Play offline.

group password new player tips nightreign wiki guidesingle player new player tips nightreign wiki guide

Play in a Group

The game is designed with a 3-player group in mind,  although you can play solo, it's not well-balanced. So it's highly recommended for new players to play and stay in a group, unless you want to face some real challenges, like fight 2-3 boss in a small area, in the same time.

Prioritize Leveling Up

leveling up new player tips nightreign wiki guide

Getting from level one to two is crucial as it significantly boosts your health and survivability. Your first objective in a map should be to quickly kill a few enemies, find a Site of Grace, and reach level two. Continue to level up at Sites of Grace after clearing areas or bosses, as they also replenish flasks and heal you.

Prioritize Churches for Flasks

churches for flasks new player tips nightreign wiki guide

Visiting churches increases your flask count, which is vital for surviving boss battles. If given a choice between two objectives of equal distance, always head to the church.

Utilize Bleed, Poison, and Scarlet Rot

These status effects are highly effective, especially in boss fights where attack windows are limited. They continuously damage bosses while you stay safe. Bosses have higher resistance to account for group play, so having multiple group members apply these effects is beneficial. You can use a detailed map to check where you can get them. (You can check our Weapons page for more info)

Consider Party Composition

party composition new player tips nightreign wiki guide

Aim for a balanced party with synergy, including at least one ranged character. An all-melee group can be vulnerable to AoE attacks that wipe out the entire team, leaving no one to revive. Learn other characters' skills to take advantage of their abilities (e.g., Reclus's healing/FP replenishment from marked targets).

Learn Boss Resistances and Weaknesses

learn bosses new player tips nightreign wiki guide

When you load into a game, or when you in the matchmaking screen, it shows each Night Lord's lore and description. So you can figure out the resistances and weaknesses of these Night Lords. Knowing these can make fights significantly easier, especially if you avoid hitting into resistant damage types. (Check our Bosses page for more info)

Prioritize Useful Consumables

Warming stones, boiled crabs (or boiled bronze for damage protection), and flesh (for physical damage boost) are good. Starlight shards are useful for FP-intensive classes.

Character-Specific Tips

Each Nightfarer has it's uniqe strengths and weakness, check our Nightfarers page for their stats, passive abilities, skills, and ultimate arts.

  • Wilder: Anyone looking for an all-rounder. Good in various situations.
  • Guardian: Anyone who enjoys a tank playstyle. Highest survivability.
  • Iron Eye: Anyone who enjoys a ranged playstyle. Not ideal for sustained melee combat due to lower HP.
  • Duchess: Anyone who likes a spellsword feel, mobility, and hit-and-run tactics. Not designed for trading blows due to lower health and stamina.
  • Raider: Players who enjoy a high-poise, strength-based character.
  • Revenant: Unique character focused on Mage - Summoner play style.
  • Recluse: Mage-type character. Given the low health and defenses, the Recluse is not an advisable class for inexperienced players, as timing parry windows, understanding her vast matrix of possible spell combinations, and successful dodge rolling are required to keep her alive.

Elden Ring Nightreign's Roundtable Hold

What is the Roundtable Hold in Nightreign?

Area that serves as the player's base. While at the Roundtable Hold, the Map and the Shortcut Menu can be accessed by pressing the Touch Pad button.

Things that can be Done at the Roundtable Hold

  • Expeditions: Select the area you want to challenge and commence an Expedition. You can also set up a password.
  • Characters Section: You can choose the characters you want to use.
  • Relic Rites: Can be used to equip Relics.
  • Visual Codex: Allows you to check various types of data and game info.
  • Sparring Grounds: Here you can check the battle controls and hone your combat skills.

Setting Up an Expedition Password

Setting up a password before commencing an Expedition makes it easier to connect with specific players.

  • Multiplayer Password: When you set up a Multiplayer Password, the matchmaking will be done only between players using the same password.
  • Number of Players Per Password: Set up the number of players who can participate in the matchmaking using a Multiplayer Password. If the number is set to 2, the matchmaking will be done with another player besides the one who created the Multiplayer Password.
  • Group Password: Using a Group Password makes it more likely to see the Phantoms and Red Phantoms of other players who are using the same password.
Phantoms / Red Phantoms

Sometimes, you will see players from other worlds moving around as Phantoms. Touching them will increase your Ultimate Art gauge. Also, by touching the Red Phantoms of players from other worlds who failed to survive, you can obtain the equipment they were carrying before they died in that same spot.

Sparring Grounds

You can go to the Sparring Grounds to check the combat controls and to hone your combat skills.

  • Sparring Grounds Equipment Menu: You can use it to equip the weapons and equipment you want to try out. You can consult the manual to check combat-related information. Any equipment changed at the Roundtable Hold will be reset when starting an Expedition, returning to the original setup.
  • Sparring Grounds Settings Menu: Allows you to change the current Level and Skills, as well as configuring Skills and changing characters.

What are Relics in Nightreign?

Relics in Nightreign are permanent progress for Nightfarers that is earned after every successful and unsuccessful run, and they appear to be randomized from a pool of Relics, but this will need more testing to confirm. Relics provide passive benefits to each Nightfarer once equipped in Roundtable Hold, and each Relic in Nightreign has a different color: REDGREENBLUE, or YELLOW. Each Nightfarer has 3 Relic slots that are color coded, so you can ONLY slot Relics into them of their matching color. Below you can see a list of which Nightfarers have which combinations.

Additionally, Relics have 3 versions a "Delicate" version that only provides 1 passive bonus, a "Polished" version which has 2 passive bonuses, and a "Grand" version which has all 3 passive bonuses. This means if you find a Relic that you like you should be hoping to get the Grand version of it eventually to get the most benefits from it. Note that some Relics provide benefits that only apply if used by specific Nightfarers, and you should try to use these on them when you can for maximum benefit.

You can equip the Relics you obtain by going to the Relic Rites menu. By doing so, you can gain special effects, such as attribute boosts. The effects of the equipped Relics will be activated at the start of the Expeditions, and they will not be consumed.

what isnt mentioned is that you dont actually lose a level on death, because the runes needed to regain that level are added onto the runes you drop on death. so it's a temporary debuff until you're able to retrieve the runes and head to a site of grace to get the level back.

Please dont encourage new players to prioritize flask, having 7 flask and no levels and damage wont save your game.
