Shields in Nightreign are defensive tools designed to protect players from the attacks of Enemies and Bosses. Usually held in the off-hand, Shields can be used for guarding, parrying, bashing, or even executing unique abilities with their skills. When wielded two-handed, they offer increased stability against incoming damage. Almost any build can benefit from a Shield, even if it’s not used often, as long as the stat requirements are met.
In Nightreign, shields are slightly different than in Elden Ring, even though they have the same moveset, shields no longer have weight, stat requirements, or scaling, and can be used by all Nightfarers, without exception. Some Shields will also have different Skills in Nightreign than what they had in Elden Ring, and for each run, shields are acquired randomly from chests and field boss drops.
Like with Weapons, shields come in different color-coded rarities. Common shields are white, uncommon are blue, rare are purple. Shields of higher rarities have better Guard Boost (which reduces stamina cost of guarding) without needing upgrades using Smithing Stones, but uncommon shields have a level requirement of 3, and rare ones need 7. Upgrading a shield improves its Guard Boost and damage (should you choose to attack with it), but does not improve its guarding damage negations. Using a shield while you are beneath its level requirement leads to increased guarding stamina cost and lower damage output if you attack with it. If you die and drop below the level requirement, you can still use the shields you previously qualified for.
All Shields in Nightreign have a passive benefit that applies regardless of which hand or slot you put it in, as long as it is equipped, and you can equip up to 6 weapons at once. This page covers a list of all the available shields in Elden Ring Nightreign.

AnonymousFor the guy below and anyone in the future, shield infusions don't change the Magic/Holy resistance of the shields. I tested this on Caligo using a Sacred Eclipse Greatshield and Silver mirrorshield. I took approxiametely 8% of the full damage using the mirrorshield to block and 27% of the full damage using the sacred eclipse greatshield, despite the sacred infusion giving it 82% magic resistance, so I would have only taken around 18%. I was mostly eyeballing this off screenshots but it was tested on the left->right breath attack she does. I assume this is done because every shield now blocks 100% physical and the infusions would end up reducing this.

What do elemental infusions on shields do in this game? Do they work like in ER where Magic and Holy infusions boost both Magic and Holy negation while lowering Fire and Lightning and vice versa? Or does it work differently? Or do they only affect damage? And why the Hell is there no way to check that info in game?

I got a shield to 99 guard boost (Haligtree shield +1) and was still taking a lot more stamina damage than I expected. (I also had the guard boost talisman) Is there somewhere where I can find how guard boost is calculated and exactly what it does in Nightreign? Because it's very different than Elden Ring.

Fun Fact: Shields that have a skill activation that puts the shield infront of you WILL block as they use their skill. Shields in reference are One-Eyed Shield, Visage Shield and iirc Spiked Palisade. They may be more.
Another tip: Look for an incantation that has Immutable Shield on it and have that in your primary hand. This lets your shield block 100% damage from spells/incants.

It’s crazy how important it is to know what type of shield you use for guardian since they all have various elemental resistances.
Many players would pick up the banished knight shield after killing so many banished knights since it comes with a purple rarity but its resistances against holy is 40 compared to the starting shield having 60. That’s a 20% dmg reduction difference.
Knowing which shield resists more elemental damage for a specific nightlord is very important

Like Bows and Whips, these have apparently received Critical animations. Shield builds are now OP.

Remember to two hand your shields for extra guardboost. Good for them big attacks you cant dodge. Im here seeing how to be a parry guardian. Yes i carry a great shield. I just cant find a parry shield
