Baba Nobuharu Fight Strategy
One of his main attacks is the Lunging Swipe, where the boss pulls back its right arm and sends out a projection of itself that lunges forward and swings first. This projection does no damage and only shows where the boss will move. Right after that, the boss’s real body follows the same motion and deals damage. Once you see the projection attack, prepare to use your guard to parry the real strike or back away to avoid it.
Another close-range attack is the Single Hand Overhead Slam, where the boss raises his left arm with the axe and pauses briefly before slamming it down at your position. Use this short pause as your signal to dodge immediately. After the slam, the boss recovers for a moment, giving you time to deal damage.
The boss also uses the Spinning Backhand Slash, where he places the axe on the opposite side of his head and sends out a projection performing a spinning backhand slash. After the projection finishes, the real body follows with the same attack. Use the projection as your warning, then guard or dodge once the real attack comes. The boss pauses briefly afterward, allowing you to attack.
Another combo is Swinging Combo 1, where the boss raises his axe to the side and sends a projection to show a horizontal slash. The real body follows with the same slash, then continues with a backhand slash, and ends with an overhead slam. The projection only warns you about the first hit, so be ready to dodge or guard the following attacks that are not telegraphed.
The boss also performs the Double Spinning Axe Slash, where he twists his body slightly and then spins twice with the axe. If dodging is too late, you can parry the attack. The body twist is the main sign that the spin is about to happen.
Another heavy move is the Heavy Spinning and Jumping Slash, where the boss twists his body to show a charged spin attack. After spinning, he pauses and sends out a projection that performs a jumping slam. The boss then copies the projection and finishes with the real jumping slam. Once you see the body twist, back away and prepare to dodge. Use the projection’s final attack as your warning to dodge the real one.
The boss also uses the Aqua AOE, where he builds up water energy in his axe and slams it into the ground. After a short delay, the water energy bursts and spreads outward instantly. Because of the delay, you need to time a jump to avoid taking damage from the spreading water.
Second Encounter
You will face Baba Nobuharu for the second time during the sub-mission "Takeda's Four Heavenly Kings" in Mikatagahara, wherein Nobuharu will be one of the Formidable Enemies you need to defeat.
During your second encounter with Nobuharu, he will be using some of his previous attacks and abilities. One of these is the lunging swipe attack, wherein Nobuharu will pull back his arm, then eventually lunges into your position, performing a quick hand swipe attack, and afterwards performing a quick slash attack using his axe. The most efficient way of avoiding this attack is to move in the opposite direction of the attack.
Another type of attack that Nobuharu reuses is his spinning backhand slash attack. You will notice that Nobuharu will place his axe on the left side of his head, then a shadow of him lunges forward before he actually swings his axe in a clockwise motion. This attack can cause a significant amount of damage to your health if you are caught.
Nobuharu will also be utilizing the use of his Burst Attack during your second encounter. Nobuharu will stay stationary for a short period of time while charging his axe for an impending heavy slash attack as he is being covered with a red aura, which will be your indication that he is about to use his Burst Attack. You can always repel this attack as long as you perfectly time your Burst Break ability.
Another form of attack that Nobuharu will be utilizing is his swinging combo attack. Nobuharu will swing his axe thrice, beginning with the first two slashes that move from left to right, and the last attack is a heavy slash attack. This attack can also cause a serious amount of damage to your health if you are unable to avoid it.
Nobuharu can also perform an attack wherein he will use his tail to whip you, and afterwards, perform a quick axe slash attack. Whenever Nobuharu uses this attack, make sure to stay alert and be on guard to avoid taking damage.
Nobuharu will also be performing a previous attack called the Aqua AOE. Nobuharu will try building a water energy, then send it towards your position, and a quick slash attack as a follow-through. The most efficient way of avoiding this attack is to get away from Nobuharu as quickly as you can.
During the second encounter with Nobuharu, he can also power up, increasing the damage output of his abilities. So make sure that you utilize your dodge and blocking abilities during this period to minimize the damage taken or even avoid taking damage at all.
Baba Nobuharu Attacks & Counters
Lunging Swipe
The boss pulls back its right arm, then sends a projection of itself that lunges forward and swings first. This boss's projection deals no damage and only serves as like a placement where the actual body of the boss will end up. Immediately after, the boss's real body follows what the projection did, and now deals damage. After the boss sends out its own projection, use your guard abilities to parry the real attack or back away to avoid it.
Single-Hand Overhead Slam
In close range, the boss raises its left arm with the axe and slams it at your position. The boss pauses a bit before slamming the axe, so take advantage of this moment and use your dodge ability immediately. He recovers for a while after the attack, so you can go in with your own attacks.
Spinning Backhand Slash
The boss places his axe on the other side of his head, sends another projection of himself doing a spinning backhand slash, and lets it swing first. It then follows up immediately with his realy body and damages you. Use the projection of the boss as your indication of the oncoming attack. Once the projection finishes the attack, either use your guard ability or dodge away from the boss. It pauses briefly after the attack, letting you attack it.
Swinging Combo 1
The boss raises his axe to the side, then sends a projection of himself to telegraph a horizontal slash. It then follows up with his original body, then does the same thing as the projection. Afterward, it continues with a backhand slash and ends with an overhead slam with the axe. Use the projection earlier as your indication of the attack. But do take note that the next 2 attacks will not be telegraphed, so be prepared to use your dodge abilities or guard abilities for these additional attacks.
Double Spinning Axe Slash
The boss spins twice while with its axe out. You can choose to parry the attack if it's too late to dodge. It twists its body a bit before actually spinning with the axe, so use this information as your indication of the attack.
Heavy Spinning and Jumping Slash
The boss starts off by twisting its body a bit to indicate that it's about to spin, then proceeds to spin with a charged axe attack. It pauses afterward, and a projection of itself does a jumping slam; it then proceeds to mimic the attack of the projection, ending with the jumping slam. It's best to utilize your dodge abilities since the attacks are heavy. So, once you see the boss twist its body a bit, immediately back away and prepare to dodge. Then, after the projection of the boss demonstrates the final attack, use this as your warning and prepare to dodge the real attack.
Aqua AOE
The boss builds up water energy with its axe, then slams it to the ground. After 2 seconds, the water energy of the axe bursts and spreads instantly all around. Since there's a delay before the actual water spreads after the initial slam, you'll have to time a jump to avoid being damaged.
Lunging Swipe (Second Encounter)
Nobuharu will be maximizing his lunging swipe attack to deal a good amount of damage to your health. He will begin by pulling back his arm, then quickly rushes into your position, performing a quick hand swipe attack, and a quick axe slash attack as a follow-through. Go in the opposite direction of the attack to avoid taking damage.
Spinning Backhand Slash (Second Encounter)
One of Nobuharu's most usual attacks is the spinning backhand slash attack, in which you will see Nobuharu placing his axe on the left side of his head, and a shadow of him then moves forward before he swings his axe in a clockwise motion. A good amount of damage will be inflicted on you if you are caught by this attack.
Burst Attack (Second Encounter)
Nobuharu's deadliest attack is his Burst Attack. He will begin by charging his axe for an impending heavy slash attack. When Nobuharu is about to use this attack, his body will be surrounded by a red aura. You can always repel this attack as long as you perfectly time your Burst Break ability.
Swinging Combo 1 (Second Encounter)
A swinging combo attack is also Nobuharu's most common attack. He will begin by trying to slash you with his axe from left to right, and the last and final attack is a heavy slash attack. When Nobuharu uses this attack, make sure you are always on guard to avoid taking damage.
Tail and Axe Slash Attack (Second Encounter)
Nobuharu can also use his tail in performing a whip attack. After this whip attack, he will quickly switch position, performing an axe slash attack. To block this attack, utilize the use of your guarding ability.
Aqua AOE (Second Encounter)
Nobuharu can also perform another type of attack, which involves water energy. Nobuharu will start by building a water energy, eventually sending this water energy into your position, and afterwards, performing a quick axe slash attack. During this attack, it is highly recommended that you stay away from Nobuharu as quickly as you can to avoid getting hit by this attack.
