Frayed Diary - Page I
I sold all of my possessions and prepared a parting gift for my retainers who would soon lose their jobs, then proceeded to say a prayer for my wife and child who had thrown themselves into the Sumida River. Relieved of my duties and stripped of my pride, I ventured to a teahouse in search of one last cup of tea. There, a well-dressed man called out to me and bid me to come to a place called Chokodo. Might I be able to reclaim my lost pride there? This man introduced himself as Yui Shosetsu.

Dojo Master's Memories - Becoming a Pupil
Upon learning that the master of Chokodo was the Kusunoki style's renowned Yui Shosetsu, I took the entirety of my Marubashi dojo to join Chokodo as his pupils. When I confided with him that I wished to avenge my family that was slain in Osaka, he responded sympathetically clapping his knee.

Haphazard Scribbles
I cannot believe you would ask for help from me, Jurobei, knowing full well that I am an official on the enemy side. No matter how much I pledge my fealty, my wages only diminish. Only those of proper lineage rise in their station. I believe a most excellent fireworks display from the munitions storehouse is in order. I cannot stop laughing.
Blood-Scrawled Orders, Section II
Comrade Kaware Jurobei:
Set fire to the shogunate's munitions warehouse, then cause a diversion by stirring unrest within and around the Edo Castle grounds.

Blood-Scrawled Orders, Section VIII
Leader of the Vanguard Marubashi Chuya:
Lead a force of elite fighters composed of the dojo's pupils and attack the Otemon Gate. Take control of Edo Castle's main keep, then conduct guerrilla operations within the city.

Illegible Secret Letter
...Lend me your guard dog in exchange for offering up Chokodo. We will split the acquired Spirit Stones and fight together. Lure out... Use the Crucible's power, and put our lives on the line to confront the enemy. Destroying the Tokugawa is the only way to make our deepest wish a reality...

Tokugawa's death is near. The time for action has arrived. Our preparations are made to force the Crucible upon Edo. I will give orders to Hanbei and the others, then make for Dokanyama with that guard dog at my side. I shall relish hearing the dying screams of Tokugawa.

Military enlistment has steadily declined since peace was ushered in, and the now jobless ronin grow restless. A private academy run by the military scholar Yui Shosetsu is growing more and more popular, and even his students seem willing to cause strife. Ietsuna, the future shogun, is only ten years of age. He is far too young to rule.
Scribe's Journal - July

Edo Castle was attacked at dawn. The castle's soldiers were unnerved by their first battle, with reports of strange figures among the enemy's ranks. Lord Rodrigo, an acquaintance of both Lord Ieyasu and Sir Anjin, contends that the odd figures are yokai. Though Jubei remains deeply suspicious. I will try to persuade him to join forces.

Recent news: Fearing execution following their deportation, they reluctantly sold themselves to a client to whom they remain subservient.
Inner thoughts: After being burned, they've grown more willing to defect. Beware of betrayal.
Other notes: Background and apparent age don't align. Traces of Amrita use present.

That top-knot wearing buffoon, General Shosetsu, wishes to play me. He has ordered that I erect a barrier to block the way to Dokanyama in exchange for more experimental specimens. He orders me to buy time for analysis because observations of the light are lacking? Such arrogance! Oh, how I long for the streets of Analusia.
Berenguela, in Zipangu
A Veritable El Dorado
At last, our research into the legends of Zipangu scrawled upon ancient documents has borne fruit. Our comrade has used alchemy to create the crimson stones, and uses his guard dog to bring the Crucible under his own control. El Dorado, a land that appears only in fables, was here all along in Dokanyama.
Gisen's Struggle: Return
I heard that the training ground had been run into the ground, and so I returned to Edo. Apparently, the bulk of the shogunate's forces have been destroyed by an uprising of sorts, and Edo has descended into chaos. I will eliminate as many of these rebel marauders as I can and learn as much as possible about their leader until Lord Jubei returns. I may have left the Yagyu and become a warrior monk in my own right, but my sharpened steel has not begun to rust.
Nineteen souls sent to paradise today.

Gisen's Struggle: Final Writings
I pursued Shosetsu to the summit, but was stabbed in the back by a man clad in black. Though I fled from the immediate threat, the blood continues to flow from such a deep wound. I wish to return to my true name that I used while practicing at the training ground. Zenji, and then breathe my last.
Lord Jubei, Shosetsu's army is not your true enemy... I lack the strength to share any more...
Jubei's Journeys II
Just when I was certain the ferocious strength of Shuten Doji would mean my end, I was saved by an Onmyo mage who suddenly appeared. When I asked his name, he said he was called Abe no Seimei. I doubt this is his true name, however, and sense that he wished to keep his identity secret.

Supernatural Tales: Guiding Lantern
Should you find yourself lost late at night, a lantern may appear in the direction you are headed. Its flickering light will seem to invite you to come closer, and it will stop moving whenever you stop. However, even the fleetest of feet will never catch up to the lantern, and any who try will have returned home without even knowing it.
Supernatural Tales: Tanuki Minstrels
When night falls, the sound of drums and flutes can be heard along the banks of Okawa River. However, should one follow the music, they will find no musician and instead wind up in an unknown land as dawn breaks. Some say that a band of tanuki creates such music, but they have never been sighted.
Supernatural Tales: Guiding Clappers
It is customary to strike wooden clappers as one makes their nightly rounds to warn against the risk of fires. On such an outing, one may hear the sound of a separate wooden clapper coming from nearby. This sound follows the person continuously, but upon turning around, no one will be present and no source of the sound can be found.
Supernatural Tales: "Leave It!"
If you fish near Kinshibori until evening, you may hear a strange voice that seemingly comes from nowhere saying "Leave it, leave it." Should the voice frighten you so much that you up and run away, all the fish you caught that day will vanish.
Hastily Scrawled Wanted Notice
The baying of a hound was heard, then a figure resembling Shosetsu was sighted.
Equipment: Foreign armor, massive sword

Hard-Pressed Writing
We are the glorious Crimson Army. It is our duty to form the foundation of Edo's defense and protect our government. Our leader has become naught but ash due to the flames of a dog-like yokai, but we samurai will not shirk our duty. We will fight to the last.
Merchant's Plan
A foreigner in black clothes begged that I allow him to read a writing titled "The Glow of the Timeless Spirit Tree," within which is contained the legend of Yamatai. This man claims the tale also contains ancient mysteries... Judging by his looks, he must be a rather wealthy fellow. In that case, he should have no issue paying a hefty fee.

Munenori's Note
Seeing my uncle Shigeyosi appear in disguise was quite the surprise. He claims to have grown tired of the underworld, and wishes to remain in this world so that he may take up a new hobby: training the next generation. Truly, he is a most unusual man. Should I become incapable of fulfilling my duties, I will leave this Secret Skills Text in his care.

The day for action has been decided. Day in and day out have I trained since meeting Master Shosetsu, yet those days finally draw to an end. Dojo Master's Memories - Avenging Kin
One late July evening, Lord Shosetsu gave word that the day of action had been decided. The others already measured the moat's width and the height of the castle walls, and they also obtained the cooperation of the munitions storehouse officials. This will be the end of Tokugawa rule. Soon, the day will come when I can shed my reputation as a traitor and proudly bear my ancestral name, Chosokabe.

Numerous foreign envoys arrived in advance of the appointment of the next shogun. Scrapped Scribbles
I have no choice but to wait for the right opportunity, then execute my mission. I know not why that man remains so obsessed with a single shogun. I want to cleanse the bloodstains of my past, discard my rapier, and finally be free...
Viva la Amrita
Gaze upon Amrita and its brilliant crimson glow! Reinforcing our military might is a trivial matter with this stone's glow. The empire shall last for eternity. From this day forth, alchemy shall rule the world. Viva la Amrita! Viva España!

Gisen's Struggle: Resistance
The shogunate finds itself in a desperate battle. Yet the number of yokai only swells, and the enemy forces show no signs of waning. I have split from my comrades headed for Hirakawa Gate to tail a woman from a foreign land. I advise caution toward abandoned boxes you happen across, for they may contain yokai that can read people's minds and transform. Jubei's Journeys III

Supernatural Tales: Cleanfoot
Each night, a massive, hair-covered foot bursts through the roof of a certain vassal's residence while shouting "Wash my foot!" at the top of its lungs. If the residents don't obey and wash the foot, it will start rampaging, so much so that it may even turn the house upside down.
Supernatural Tales: One-Sided Reeds
A man grew furious over the fact that the woman he fell in love with did not return his feelings. He cut off one of her arms and one of her legs, then threw her to death from Ryogoku Bridge. Since then, it would seem that the reeds growing beneath the bridge only sprout leaves on a single side.
Supernatural Tales: Eternal Tree
The Matsura family's garden is said to contain a Castanopsis tree whose leaves never fall off. It could very well be a sacred tree and must be treated properly, a predicament which has left the lord of the Matsura family quite stumped.
Blood-Stained Charges
The Tokugawa's power made their regime grow arrogant and oppressive. Never once did they listen to the people's demands, nor make any attempt at policy reform. Shosetsu's righteousness was beyond their understanding, and they raised their blades against even Shosetsu. For the aforementioned crimes, the Tokugawa shall be paraded through the streets before being beheaded.

Battle Strategy Log
A great darkness crept across the skies above Dokanyama. At the same time, half the castle, along with the soldiers inside, was overtaken by the rising tide. Shosetsu's forces are to cross the moat and enter the castle's premises. Gather your forces at Tayasu Gate and Hirakawa Gate.
Artisan's Note
These days, just havin' a sword ain't enough to earn a livin'. The other day, an older samurai came in, bawling and crying and begging me to teach him how to fix up an umbrella.
