Multiplayer in Nioh 3 allows players to team up for Co-op gameplay. The system supports multiplayer for up to 3 players, allowing friends to explore the vast open field and challenge difficult Yokai together. Players can access all multiplayer options through the "Co-op" (協力) menu at any Shrine. Multiplayer features primarily revolve around a Visitor system and a dedicated Expedition mode that lets players explore the open field, or complete Missions together.
Multiplayer Guide for Nioh 3
To engage in multiplayer, players must first access the Shrine menu. From there, select the Co-op (協力) option to open the multiplayer lobby. The game features three distinct modes for cooperative play.

Co-op Modes
- Summon Visitor: This mode allows the host player to summon another player into their current game session. To do this, the host must offer an Ochoko Cup at a Shrine. It's important to note that visitors can only be summoned while you are actively inside a mission, not from the world map or hub area.
- Become a Visitor: This is the counterpart to summoning. By selecting this option, you make yourself available to be summoned into another player's world. This allows you to "answer the summons of another player and assist them as a visitor," helping them overcome challenges in their mission.
- Expeditions: This mode allows up to 3 players to form a party and tackle missions together from the start. Unlike the Visitor system, Expeditions are designed for a group to "cooperate with another player to explore and complete missions" as a team.
Upon selecting Expeditions, players can choose between two sub-modes:
- Story Mode: Explore the current area with a companion
- Mission Mode: Missions cleared and sub missions unlocked by both you and your companion can be played
Creating an Expedition Room

When starting an Expedition, players can either Search for an open room or Create Room to host a session. When creating a room, the host can configure the following settings:- Room Policy: Sets the general accessibility of the room (e.g., "All Welcome").
- Guest Slots: Each of the two guest slots can be set to "Open Slot" for public matchmaking or "Private" for invited players.
- Secret Code: A password can be set for private rooms to ensure only friends can join.
- Matching Region: Allows players to limit matchmaking to "Same Area Only" or set it to "No limits" for worldwide matching.
Expedition Mechanics
- The Assist Gauge: A shared gauge is displayed onscreen during Expeditions. This gauge decreases every time a player dies and can be restored when the host prays at a Shrine. If the gauge is fully depleted, the mission will end in failure.
- Assist and Revive: When a player dies, a grave will appear. Other players can revive them by approaching the grave and pressing R1. A successful revival will also restore the Assist Gauge. A downed player can also revive on their own by holding Circle, as long as the Assist Gauge is above 0.
- Shrine Interaction: When the host prays at a Shrine, all companions' health will be restored, all players will be teleported to that Shrine's location, and enemies in the area will respawn.
- Bonuses: Going on continuous Expeditions will grant bonuses to Amrita and Glory based on the number of enemies defeated.
Story Mode Rules & Guest Limitations
- Host-led Progression: Progress in Story Mode Expeditions is tied to the host's world. Guests act as companions to assist the host in their exploration.
- Guest Restrictions: Guests cannot use fast travel and have limitations in terms of game progression and triggering events.
Continuing after Mission Failure
- Continuing: If the team chooses to continue after a failed mission, the Assist Gauge is fully restored, but any bonus gained from defeated enemies is reset.
- Amrita Recovery: Upon failing, a grave will appear at the host's last position. The host can return to this grave to recover their lost Amrita.
- Guest Amrita is Safe: A key feature is that Amrita collected by guests during an Expedition will never decrease or be lost, even upon mission failure.
- Ending the Expedition: The Expedition will permanently end if the party chooses not to continue after failing.
Asynchronous Online Features
In addition to real-time co-op, Nioh 3 features several online elements that allow players' worlds to interact indirectly. These systems bring a sense of a shared, dangerous world where the echoes of other players' journeys can be seen and challenged.
- Bloodedge Demon: The malice held by all Revenants defeated thus far has gathered and taken form as one hulking Revenant yokai. If you can defeat this monstrosity, you will obtain many rare items as well as the equipment contained within the nearby bloody grave. The Bloodedge Demon is not confined to one location, and will appear in different places over time.

Bloody Grave: A tombstone marking where another player died during their mission. When a Bloody Grave is activated, a hostile, yokai-shifted version of that player, called a “Revenant,” appears. The Revenant is controlled by an AI that reflects the original player's playstyle. Defeating it allows you to obtain their equipment and other items.
Benevolent Grave: These blue graves are sites where chivalrous players have offered their assistance. By offering an Ochoko Cup at a Benevolent Grave, you can summon an AI-controlled "Acolyte" of that player to temporarily join you in your fight.
AnonymousAnyone else getting the constant issue of Acolytes only having one Equipment set? Are there just a load of asshats stripping down one half of their builds just to be dickheads, or is it just a really stupid bug?

AnonymousCan they add a feature to start in offline mode.
Or add a setting to disconnect from offline

People really gotta start using the private slot option if you wanna just play with your friend. Wasting my time joining and having to leave the games half the time. Making me almost give up on expeditions altogether.
