Shadow of the Erdtree is a fully fledged expansion for Elden Ring that adds a whole new map with 70 new Weapons, 10 new Shields, 39 new Talismans, 14 new Sorceries, 28 new Incantations, 20 new Spirit Ashes, 25 new Ashes of War, 30 new Armor Sets and new Consumables & Craftables. The expansion was announced via Twitter by the official Elden Ring account on February 28th, 2023. A Gameplay Trailer released on February 21st 2024, and a Story Trailer followed on May 21st, 2024. The release date of the DLC was June 21st, 2024.

Level-Scaling Mechanic

This leveling mechanic introduced in the DLC is optional and can be ignored by players if they feel it will affect the game too much. In the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, players can gather Scadutree Fragments scattered around the map. Once enough have been collected, a new option will appear as you rest on a Site of Grace. This will increase the level of your Scadutree Blessing, which increases the amount of damage you deal, and reduces the damage you receive from Enemies and Bosses.

This DOES NOT mean that previous leveling in the main game does not matter, or that this new leveling mechanic replaces the old one. If you are level 200+ and have all your Weapons fully upgraded, you will probably be overleveled for the DLC. It is also important to note that the benefits from the Scadurtree Fragments only work on the Realm of Shadows and will not grant players benefits if they return to the Lands Between.

Shadow of the Erdtree Revered Spirit Ashes

Revered Spirit Ashes is another mechanic introduced in the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion. This mechanic allows Spirit Ashes and Summons to be boosted to +10, allowing them to continue to scale with you in the DLC. This mechanic also increases durability and health for Torrent, your spectral steed.

Like the new level-scaling mechanic, Revered Spirit Ashes are only operational while you are in the Realm of Shadows and does not work in the Lands Between.

Shadow of the Erdtree Weapon Types

Shadow of the Erdtree introduces 8 different types of Weapons. These Weapons are not in the base game and can only be found in the expansion. They have their own styles, movesets, requirements, Ashes of War, and may cater to diverse styles of play.

How to access Shadow of the Erdtree?

The first thing to know is how to access the new content added with the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. The Lands Between will remain in their constant wage for power and the main game's original story will be there waiting for us any time we decide to return, but in order to access the new content in the DLC, players will have to reach a certain point in the story.

Defeat both Starcourge Radahn and Mohg, Lord of Blood

These two bosses have to be defeated in order to be able to start the DLC. Given that Mohg, Lord of Blood is one of the most challenging and, probably late-game Bosses, players will face, he will probably be defeated AFTER already having defeated Starscourge Radahn. The DLC is expected to be difficult and around the same level as Crumbling Farum Azula, in terms of challenge.

Interact with Miquella's Cocoon

After defeating Mohg, Lord of Blood, a new Site of Grace will appear in the battlefield. Rest there and interact with Miquella's Cocoon at the back of the room. This will trigger the events of the DLC, and lead players to the Realm of Shadow.

What to expect from the Shadow of the Erdtree Expansion

Given FromSoftware's previous releases and the fact that the expansion is being announced more than a year after Elden Ring's official launch, we speculate that this content is a fully-fledged expansion meant to add significant content to the game.

Unlike the Colosseum Update, which featured content that had already been hinted at with the base game, the Shadows of the Erdtree expansion should feature entire new areas, weapons, equipment, bosses, and discoveries. The zone features on the image for the game are already different than any available in-game at the moment, and it is likely to expand on the Lore and background of the world.

The expansion features its own “mini logo” which is often a signal for a large content expansion, but the main driving force behind the content size speculation is the amount of time that it has taken FromSoftware to reveal that the content is in the works. We initially estimated that they must have been working on this for some time, announcing development in Feb 2023, and expect a launch date to be revealed around Q2 with a release date for Q3 or Q4 2023.

New Story

Guided by the Empyrean Miquella, players are beckoned to the Land of Shadow, a place obscured by the Erdtree where the goddess Marika first set foot. In these strange new lands, players discover the dark secrets of the world as they meet others who follow in Miquella’s footsteps with ulterior motives.

New Location

Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree takes players beyond the Lands Between to explore the Land of Shadow, a completely new world from Elden Ring. Players can seamlessly travel back and forth between its vast maps interspersed with diverse situations and meticulous dungeons where menacing enemies roam.

New Content

Shadow of the Erdtree adds new Weapons, equipment, weapon skills and Magic not found in the base game ELDEN RING, along with new Enemies, Boss encounters and plotlines to further increase players' RPG freedom. Take on these threats with the new powers you can acquire.

Shadow of the Erdtree Story Trailer

Released on May 21st, the Shadow of the Erdtree Story trailer sets the stage for the events of the DLC. As is the case with most From Software trailers, there are many pieces of lore to pick up but not enough to form the whole puzzle and have a clear image of what is going on. Regardless, there are a few theories:

The beginning of the trailer shows a hand, presumably Marika's, grabbing golden threads from a viscera-like container. Many From Software titles do make this evocative images about birth, which may be a paralelism about the birth of a faction or even a demigod.
At the beginning, there is also mention about a seduction and a betrayal, and then is completed with the lines "An affair from which gold arose. And so too was Shadow born." This may refer to the creation of the Erdtree, and what it represents, but also the birth of Shadow and the Shadowlands.
Given that the Erdtree replaced the Great Tree once Marika mended it, and the location of the Erdtree in the original Elden Ring, it is not far-fetched to think that the Land of Shadows, which according to Miyazaki has been "sundered from the Lands Between", will be found in the area of the map below Leyndell, and above Limgrave/Caelid.
The hand has a snake bangle. Snakes are considered blasphemy in the current time of Elden Ring.
"What followed was a war unseen, one that could never be put to song". This lines, spoken after the birth of gold and shadow, is followed by images of Messmer's Army razing a flaming city. As the army marches onward, Messmer is standing on high ground, as the lines "A purge without grace or honour." are displayed.
Later on the trailer, the Lion Dancer enemy or boss, attacks a soldier of Messmer's Army, and on the following take, procedes to attack him, and the following shot shows Messmer invoking fire from his right hand. After that take, three Lion Dancers seem to be impaled on spears among the fire ruins.
Miquella abandons everything, even getting rid of his flesh, which is a way to get out of the influence of the Greater Will.
When the trailer displays "And so kindly Miquella would abandon everything". It shows what it seems to be Miquella's Great Rune. Another theory is that the Shadowlands won't have sites of grace, and feature instead these types of guidance throughour the DLC area.

When does Shadow of the Erdtree Come out?

As revealed on the gameplay trailer released on February 21st, Shadow of the Erdtree will release on June 21st, 2024

For which platforms Shadow of the Erdtree will be available?

Shadow of the Erdtree is releasing on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, and PC. Do note that Physical retail versions will be only available for PlayStation5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, but not on the previous console generation (Playstation 4 and Xbox One)

How can Shadow of the Erdtree be accessed?

Both Starscourge Radahn and Mohg, Lord of Blood must be defeated to access the DLC when it is released. Players can then enter the DLC by interacting with the withering arm on the cocoon in Mohg's boss arena.

Did George R. R. Martin provide new material for Shadow of the Erdtree?

Confirmed by Miyazaki, Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin did not provide new material for the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion. The DLC is based on one part of the mythos the fantasy writer originally created for FromSoftware during the base Elden Ring development.

Will I be locked into the Expansion once I start Shadow of the Erdtree?

No. Players will have the chance to return to Lands Between at any given time and won't be locked into the DLC content.

Is Shadow of the Erdtree a stand-alone expansion?

No. Shadow of the Erdtree is a massive addition to the already immense world of Elden Ring, and it requires players to have the original Elden Ring edition already installed. Players that don't possess the original game, WILL NOT be able to play Shadow of the Erdtree.

Will there be more expansions after Shadow of the Erdtree?

Miyazaki stated there are currently no plans for further DLC, although at the same time he claimed that doesn't mean everything in Elden Ring is complete and that he doesn't want to make any statements which close off future possibilities. From Software has a track record of releasing at least one paid DLC package for their games, but it remains to be seen if a second DLC comes after Shadow of the Erdtree.

What will Shadow of the Erdtree difficulty level be?

According to Miyazaki, the difficulty level is on a similar footing with the end game of the base game. Shadow of the Erdtree will also include a separate, limited to the DLC level up system affecting attack power so that even high level players may face new challenges and may enter or avoid areas based on enemy difficulty. He compared this to Attack Power in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and also stated it can be opted out of entirely for a greater challenge.

Developers start most players that tried Shadow of the Erdtree during the test at level 150, but depending on your abilities and Builds, players may start at around level 100 to 120.
