What is the Elden Ring Movie?

Elden Ring is a video game developed by FromSoftware and published by BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment America Inc. It was described as a title "equivalent" to the Dark Souls series, which featured an open world called the Lands Between with robust content, including secrets, NPC Quests, epic boss battles, armor, weapons, and more. It was also popular as fans learned that the company had asked the author of "A Song of Ice and Fire", George R.R. Martin, to share his talent in constructing the world of the game while teaming up with game director Hidetaka Miyazaki, who also worked as the lead writer of Elden Ring.

The Elden ring was shattered. Its golden light, once eternal, was scattered to the winds of ruin. Marika's offspring, demigods all, claimed the shards of the Elden Ring. Soon a war began, a war from which no lord arose. - Official IMDb page

Elden Ring is a game that takes place in a fictional world known as the Lands Between, where players take on the role of the Tarnished, an exiled warrior who sets forth on a journey to restore the Elden Ring. As the Tarnished warrior, they encounter formidable foes and discover secrets through exploring the environment, speaking to notable characters, discovering key items, and learning more about the world through lore. Through its success since its launch, which sold more than 30 million copies, Elden Ring became a commercial success, winning various awards and ultimately GOTY (Game of the Year) in 2022. Eventually, an expansion, known as the Shadow of the Erdtree released, which followed through with a spin-off entitled Elden Ring Nightreign, and soon to be released, the Tarnished Edition.

Back in 2024, game director Miyazaki expressed his interest that he was open to collaborating with a strong partner who would be willing to adapt the lore of Elden Ring to another medium of entertainment, which later on led to news of Elden Ring being teased for an adaptation for television or film. As time passed, an English author and filmmaker who goes by the name of Alex Garland, best known for the films he has written, like 28 Days Later, 28 Weeks Later, 28 Years Later, and films directed such as, Ex Machina, Annihilation, and Civil War, shared his experience with A24's head of film, Noah Sacco, about playing Elden Ring. This led to Noah leaving an impression on Alex Garland's enthusiasm about the game and has given him support to pursue an adaptation.

Alex Garland then prepared a script that involved 160 pages, which was also supplemented with visual aids, and traveled to Japan, where he would continue his pitch and eventually sign a deal with FromSoftware. And in May 2025, an announcement was revealed that Elden Ring was green-lit for a live-action film adaptation that is set to be developed at A24, with Alex Garland himself leading the helm to write and direct.

News then followed through as one of Hollywood's young heartthrob actors, Kit Connor, known for his role as Nick Nelson in Netflix's teen series, Heartstopper, was rumored to play a lead role, and shortly after, Cailee Spaeny, best known for playing the role of Rain Carradine in Alien: Romulus, was also rumored to join the cast. The two actors were then confirmed in April 2026 as official stars to play in the film, alongside English actor, Benjamin John Whishaw, who is best known for his roles as Q in the James Bond films and also the voice actor of Paddington Bear.

Elden Ring Set Leaks: Is it Real?

In recent news, fans of Elden Ring, the internet, and the gaming industry were shaken after footage and images had leaked online, which showed the set being built. The leaked material featured "noteworthy" elements that fans of the series quickly identified and were left with a positive and hopeful reaction, knowing that the adaptation video games, in general, just might actually be something worth looking forward to for Elden Ring. You can find the material we are referring to here. What was shown:

  • An impressive sculpture and replica of the statue of Queen Marika the Eternal, standing within the stone ruins of a structure that would closely resemble the Third Church of Marika.
  • Props such as old-fashioned wooden carriages, reminiscent of the Great Caravans that roam the game's map, would be visible alongside curved vertical structures that could be interpreted as the finger-like monoliths or ritual totems found throughout Limgrave.
  • The presence of heavy cranes and support staff would indicate a massive production scale, consistent with A24’s largest investment to date.
