Elden Ring Swordhand of Night Jolán Questline Guide
Swordhand of Night
Swordhand of Night Jolán is located leaning on a pillar in the Cathedral of Manus Metyr. She will only appear after you have completed the first objective in Count Ymir's questline, which is to ring the fingerbell at the Finger Ruins of Rhia. Report back to Count Ymir, and you will find Jolan there.
As you progress through Count Ymir's questline, go back to Jolan every now and then to hear new dialogue from her. After ringing the bell in the Finger Ruins of Rhia, report back to Count Ymir, claim your rewards, and speak with Jolan. When you speak with her, she will be surprised that Count Ymir has trusted you with his objectives. Due to that, you have earned hers as well, but she warns you that she's neither your friend nor foe. She is only there to serve Count Ymir.
Ring the second bell at the Finger Ruins of Dheo and report back to Count Ymir, and speak with Jolan. She will tell you that she isn't interested in teaming up with you but she sees that Count Ymir is happy with you. Exhaust all her dialogue and rest at the Cathedral of Manus Metyr - Site of Grace and return to the throne to find that Ymir isn't there anymore. Interact with it and go down the rope ladder. You will be invaded by Anna, defeat the invader, and go talk to Jolan about it. She wishes you not to say anything else but she thanks you.
Progress through Count Ymir's questline, and after you defeat Metyr, Mother of Fingers fast travel back to the Cathedral, and touch the empty throne. You will have to defeat Jolan and Count Ymir, Mother of Fingers. Once you've successfully defeated both, rest at the Site of Grace and return to Jolan's spot to find her sitting on the ground against the pillar. As you approach Jolan, she will tell you shes losing her vision, and can't see the sky or the stars. You have 2 options for what item you want to give. Both items will end her questline:
Choosing to give the Iris of Grace to Jolan will reward you with the following items:
- Swordhand of Night Jolan (Spirit Ash Summon)
Choosing to give the Iris of Occultation to Jolan will kill her and reward you with the following items:
- Sword of Night (Katana)
Iris of Grace Locations
- Can be looted at the Specimen Storehouse of the Shadow Keep. [See Shadow of the Erdtree Map]
- Can be found at the base of the headless statue of Marika in the building west of the Sunken Chapel. Drain the water in the church district, and follow the path of the Tree-Worship Passage to find the statue there. [See Shadow of the Erdtree Map]
Iris of Occultation Locations
- Acquired as an item drop from defeating a Lesser Ulcerated Tree Spirit located in this area after you drain the flood in the Church District. [See Shadow of the Erdtree Map]
- Acquired as an item drop from a Lesser Omenkiller. Drop down the well in the main arena of Fort of Reprimand. The enemy will ambush you there among some items. [See Shadow of the Erdtree Map]
Progressing through the Hinterland site of grace at the right there is the Shaman Village. Look behind the edges and there will be a series of cliffs going down. Carefully make your way down and you will reach the side of the Rabbath's Rise. You will find a puppet of Anna, examine it and you can choose to usher Anna into the Swordhand of Night Jolan's spirit ashes. Doing so will reward you with Jolan and Anna.
Dialogue in Elden Ring: Jolan
Introduction, after meeting Count Ymir, High Priest:
- I've no interest in small talk. My only concerns are the concerns of Count Ymir. And you are not among them.
- Only, there is one thing I will say. Count Ymir's kindness is a gift. Should you cross him, you will sorely regret it.
- Be gone, there is nothing more to say.
Talk after blowing first bell
- How did you… Did Count Ymir reward you with that? Hmm. Then I see you have gained his trust. And therefore, mine.
- I am Jolán. The Night is yours now to wield.
- Don’t get the wrong idea. We are neighter friends nor confidantes. I am merely honouring Count Ymir’s wishes.
- Enough of you.
Tell her you were attacked by a Swordhand of Night underground
- Stop. What did you just say? Hmmm. Wait, no. Say nothing. I have one star alone. And only his words will do…
- I will say this much. I am in your debt. But I will hear no more. I have one star alone. And only his words will do…
- Be on your way. I will hear no more about this.
Talk, after blowing the second bell
- I told you once. I’ve no interest in companionship. But I must admit. Count Ymir did seem very pleased. Perhaps an exception is in order.
- Ymir is a shining star. In our eyes, the only star upon the black canvas of night. Our meeting with the Count taught us of the star-draped sky. We know that we cannot reach out to touch it. But we can peer up at its brilliance, and heed its guidance. We will never again lose our way in the night.
- I have spoken far too freely. Pay me no mind. Let us focus on our shared purpose. Our service to Count Ymir.
- Now, be on your way.
Introduction, after blowing both bells
- Ahh, who have we here…? Count Ymir seemed very pleased. And for that, I express my gratitude.
- I am Jolán. Loyal to Count Ymir. The Night is yours now to wield.
After defeating Metyr and examining the throne
- What have you done? You’ve wounded Count Ymir most irreparably. Such that he wishes for your death. And I must attend to the Count’s concerns.
- (Upon player's death) Surrender. To the Night of Jolán.
- (On player's death, if her dialogue is exhausted after blowing both bells)
Why… Why did you cross Count Ymir? - (On defeat) Oh, my dear star… A fine mother… you will be…
After defeating Count Ymir
- Count Ymir… The stars...the sky… I see them not...
- The Night is ever dark. I need the stars...Give me light.
- (Use Iris of Grace) Oh, it blinds… As if our Night simply never was...
- (Use Iris of Occultation) No light...anywhere at all...This is the night I know. Our Night...

Lore Items Related to Jolan
Jolan and Anna
Ashen remains in which spirits yet dwell.
Use to summon the spirits of Jolán and Anna.
Spirits of two Swordhands of Night, one of them being possessed by Count Ymir's doll Anna. Together, Jolán's sword and Anna's claws are as bottomless black, and penetrate the enemy's guard.
Jolán and Anna were born in a cold, dark gaol, where they were raised, deprived of light, to be Swordhands of Night. Thus were they cultivated to become the most terrifying masters of their blades, though the burden of the deed left their hearts frail and pliant.
Sword of Night
Sword of an all-consuming, bottomless black that devours even the light that shines upon it. Wielded by Jolán, Swordhand of Night. The blade of the sword is only semicorporeal, and thus cannot be guarded against completely.
Swordhand of Night Jolan
Ashen remains in which spirits yet dwell. Use to summon the spirit of Swordhand of Night Jolán. Spirit of a swordhand granted light by the Iris of Grace. Wields a sword of bottomless black that penetrates the enemy's guard. Though it was not by the shining star that she had longed for, thus was her Night illuminated. But this was an at times blinding light, and threatened to expunge the Night entirely.
Dialogue Related to Jolan
Count Ymir, High Priest
Ah, you met Jolán? Well, I hope that she behaved, at least. The poor girl has overcome grave misfortune. Her tongue can be sharp at the best of times, but don't think that makes her a bad person. Mm. It's no surprise her little sister too, has a heart of gold.

AnonymousIf you think about it, when you become Elden Lord you have access to the full power of the Elden Ring, and the Great Rune of the Unborn allows for rebirth into a new body... I am so bringing Jolan back, she's so bad, and her sister so she's happy.

AnonymousWow, I actually never saw this character whenever I stayed at the cathedral. Only knew of her after she invaded in the last step of the questline. She really blended in

Anonymous
AnonymousIris of grace is clearly the better ending for her. She gets to leave the night she was forced into living in and join us in combat, a new star to guide her (and her sister is with her as well)

Anonymous
AnonymousYou need to reach Rabbath's Rise through a different light of grace point, I definitely had to watch a video.

AnonymousYou can summon Jolan for the Ghostflame Dragon fight on the Cerulean Coast!
If you Start Count Ymirs' quest line & talk to him again after activating the first finger ruins whistle it becomes available.
Summon Spot is located in an empty patch, @ Cerulean Coast grace, infront of the Ghostflame Dragon.
AnonymousIris of occultation is the good ending here, opposite of queelign.

AnonymousDear wiki creators,
Please, please- in the objectives for this quest, make sure there is a note that details what each iris does.
Otherwise, a player who is following just the guide without knowing what each iris does, might accidentally lock themselves out of the quest weapon they wanted.

AnonymousSo was Jolan simply oblivious to what her Count was doing behind the scenes, or was she simping soo hard for him that she just didn't care?

Anonymous1st act: this is the 4th time I pass by this church and the 1st time I see you, beautiful armor you look interesting, let's talk a little. Wow you are very distant I just wanted to say hello, see you bye
2nd act: yeah, I just did what your boss asked me to do. It was simple, there were 2 empty areas with enemies that didn't even notice I was there. In fact, I approached them to see what they were doing, one of them wanted to eat me, it was adorable haha. I simply went in and blew on the hollow finger, it's fun because by the 2nd finger everyone was sleeping haha, nothing complicated. You're not interested in listening to me? Fine, whatever you want.
3rd act: Now you're trying to kill me? But I did exactly what your boss asked me to do. Well, I guess I'll have to add you to the endless list of fools and demigods I've killed.
4th act : My foot on your face. Now, where is your boss?
What is the name of this play of theater ??
Yep, another "Tiny fraction of history, attempted murder for doing what they ask you to do" NPC and then proceeds to die like 90% of npc in this game
It ends up being predictable, boring and unoriginal
Anonymous3rd character in the game with a Hungarian name, after Margit the fell omen, and Old knight Istvan

AnonymousPlease fix this questline bullet points highlighting that giving a different item will have a different outcome because the way it is it seems like it doesn't matter

Anonymous
AnonymousShe can also be summoned for the fight against the Ghostflame Dragon at Cerulean Coast. Her sign isn't at the grace itself, but at some point between the grace and the dragon.

AnonymousHow to get Jolan to join you in the Messmer fight.
Step 1: Get quest from Ymir and exhaust his dialogue
Step 2: Before heading anywhere, go and speak with Jolan (same room as Ymir) and exhaust her dialogue
Step 3: Head to ruins of Rhia and sound the whistle
Step 4: Head back to Ymir, exhaust his dialogue
Step 5: Speak to Jolan again, exhaust her dialogue
Step 6: After those 5 steps are done, Jolan's summon sign will be available INSIDE Messmer's arena, to your immediate left (If you're pursuing Hornsent's quest as well, his summon will be on the right side of the arena)
Didn't know she had conditions past the first time talking to her to be able to summon her.
Anonymousi... never even saw her. didn't know she even existed until she invaded at the end of ymir's questline.

Anonymousi keep trying to interact with her to give an iris but it instantly breaks dialogue when i interact and wont let me do anything, pls help :( (seamless coop)

Anonymous
AnonymousShe has different dialogue not listed on this page as of this comment. I remember her being upset and saying "You would abscond with the Count's wisdom?" or something like that. I don't know what triggered it. I just blew both bells, went underground, beat the invader, beat the boss on the second try, then pressed the button on the chair again.

AnonymousNew favorite female character! Too bad I need weapons more than waifus in this game so I had to dispose of her. Damn you, Miyazaki.

NPC: insults player and emasculates them
Redditors: omg I'm in looooove
Anonymousi dont get why they get mad blew those fingers as we were told

AnonymousSummoned her for help with tree sentinels' fight in Hinterland, but I died. Now I can't find her summon sign again. :/ I don't know if it poofed, or borked, or what. Just spent a while going back and forth on the trail looking for it. Kind of bummed out. -_-;;;

Anonymousday 2 of hoping the admins approve a comment pointing out missing information instead of approving more simps: walk from Cerulean Coast grace straight toward the dragon. After passing by the mobs, there is a patch of dirt with no grass/flowers on it, with the summon sign. Have to stand closeby for it to appear but you dont have to be in combat for it to spawn, unlike the sign at the sentinel. You can summon her there even after ringing the second bell (but before talking to Ymir afterwards), but its gone after angering Ymir

Anonymousanyone struggling to find the erdtree sentinel sign, its in the middle of the path and next to a little shrubbery bush, just before the first sentinel swoops down. It wont appear until combat has been initiated and defeating either sentinel counts as the bossfight

Anonymoususeless comment section code... anyway this page is missing one of her summon signs at the cerulean coast ghostflame dragon. go from the grace straight toward the dragon. Close to the dragon, there's a spot of dirt on the slope that has no grass or flowers on it. Jolan can be summoned there, combat does not have to have started but you need to get close enough for it to appear. Its probably there because of Ymirs first quest, but she can still be summoned after finishing Ymirs second quest but before talking to Ymir

AnonymousOk... so i use the dark eye thingy and that basically kill her? And you can save her and reunite with her sister?? I guess we really the bad guy guys

Anonymous
Anonymous
AnonymousLets put her in a really dark room and dress her completely in black ...

Anonymous
AnonymousSo she knows the real Anna before she became a puppet? Did Ymir seluvis Anna into a puppet and control her?

AnonymousOf course I forgot to touch the damn throne, everything else is figured out on my own and I was so confused how people were fighting home as a boss

So if I want to get all the rewards, I need to do 3 NG? oof...

Anonymousjolan can also be summoned as an NPC for messmer, you have to progress at least one step into ymir's quest and she shows up in the arena where hornsent's sign shows up

Anonymous
AnonymousI just tested it, spirit ash levels do transfer when adding or removing Anna

Anonymous
Anonymous
AnonymousI’m seeing people mention unique dialogue if you discover Anna’s puppet before Anna invades you. Does this change anything?

Anonymousfromsoft commited a crite by creating her beautiful armor and making it unobtainable

AnonymousPlease make it more clear that you can obtain her weapon with the Iris of Occultation. In Notes Tab it just states that it ends her questline. Youll have to read further to find the information about the weapon.

Anonymous
AnonymousShe can also be summoned to fight the ghostflame dragon at cerulean coast

Anonymous

Anonymousi gave her the grace and i didn't even get the spirit summon :( doesn't show in the inventory

AnonymousShoutout to mysterious women with attractive voices, edgy black armor and incorporeal black swords who are overly dedicated to their masters. Got to be one of my favorite genders.

AnonymousWhat she says when given the Iris of Grace:
"Oh, it blinds..."
"As if our Night simply never was..."
Anonymous
Anonymousdoes anyone know what the dialogue is for if you speak to her about the puppet? I'm curious, but not enough to go playthrough again anytime soon just to find out

AnonymousJolan can also be summoned for the Tree Sentinels at the start of Hinterland

Anonymous
Anonymousshe's available as a summon against the tree sentinels even before you fight anna, but i believe her summon sign only appears at night.

AnonymousYou can't talk to her about the doll of Anna after you have defeated Anna's invader.

Anonymous
AnonymousDidn't even know Jolan existed until after I had killed Count Ymir. Was still able to give her an eye though. Glad it didn't lock out.

AnonymousApparently you not only can combine Jolan ash with Anna to get a new ash, but also can remove Anna from that ash as well…

Anonymousimportant, examine the anna puppet before opening the throne area....

AnonymousTaking Jolans ashes to Annas Puppet allows you to combine both ashes. I think that would be the real end of the quest line.

AnonymousDidn't even notice her until i finished the whole questline and she invaded me lmao

AnonymousI was able to examine the throne and fight Anna after only ringing the first bell.

AnonymousI was able to examine the throne and fight Anna after only ringing the first bell.

AnonymousI saw her appear right after speaking to Ymir the first time and carelessly dying to some enemies just outside. So I guess you don’t have to ring the first bell for her to appear since I haven’t done that yet…

AnonymousNote: giving Jolan the "Iris of Grace" will give you the "Swordhand of Night Jolan" Summon spirit and ends her questline, while giving her the "Iris on Occultation" will give you her sword "Sword of Night" and end her questline. She dies regardless of which item you give her.

AnonymousAfter you go under the throne and defeat her sister but BEFORE you ring the bell, you can go back and talk to her and she will have some extra dialogue, there will be an option that you were attacked by someone down there etc.

AnonymousI summoned her for the second tree sentinel, then I died, and now her summon sign is gone?

AnonymousI didn't see Jolan to speak to at all, not sure if I missed her or she was missing. Even after doing the full Metyr/Ymir questline, fighting both invaders, still didn't see her after multiple reloads. Then I went and picked up the Armor and Shield of Night from Bonny Gaol, decided to check the church one more time and... she was there, and I was able to give her an iris.

AnonymousYou can summon her for the second tree sentinel in the hinterlands, but i'm not sure what the conditions for it are.

AnonymousSo i told her about the invader under the throne, then went to hinterlands and saw puppet of anna, this was after i did the first ruin, she had the same dialogue as if nothing happened, same for the second ruin and well, after i killed Metyr and Ymir and gave her grace, i only got her as the summon, did i do something wrong? are you supposed to just die to Metyr the first time and then tell her about Anna?

AnonymousI straight up never saw this NPC and didn't know about her until after I killed Ymir at the end of his quest
so I assume she doesn't appear now huh?
AnonymousSo if u go to the tower after getting jolans spirit ashes, u can interact with the puppet of anna and your spirit ashes turn into jolan and anna

AnonymousIf you have jolan spirit ass and go to anna puppets you can fuse them together to get jolan and anna spirit ash.

AnonymousYou can talk to her after getting invaded under the church but before the boss.
"Tell her you were attacked by a Swordhand of Night underground"
She says she doesnt want to hear more and she only has one star and his words will do.
Before going down and ringing the final finger bell, you should go to the hinterlands (behind the black keep) and go through the sentinels, then in a corner behind the shaman village, there will be a jumping down until you fall atop the Rabbath Rise tower. There you will find Anna's puppet. Examine it and go talk to Jolán about it.
(im not sure what happens after cuz in my playthrough i found the puppet after the boss and i got invaded by Jolán and had to kill her.. oh sadness)
