Basic Controls is a Sub Mission in Nioh 3. Basic Controls is a tutorial mission that explains the commands shared by the Samurai and Ninja styles. Sub Missions in Nioh 3 are non-essential quests that can be completed in different chapters of the game. Sub Missions are not required to reach the ending, but completing them will reward the player with various rewards that can help boost their character's progression.
In Basic Controls, you can practice commands shared by both styles, like attacking and guarding.

Starting Basic Controls
After unlocking Basic Controls as a Sub Mission, head to any shrine and select it from the interface of the Battle Scroll. Once you select it, you will be in an instanced location of a training grounds. Interact with the glowing orb in the middle of the room, then pick up the Wooden Sword and equip it from the equipment menu.
As you go around the room, a ninja grunt will emerge from above. Several tutorial prompts will pop out, prompting you to perform them in combat. You will have to lock-on (R3) at the enemy, then you will have to perform 3 Quick Attacks (☐) and 3 Strong Attacks (△). After performing the two attacks three times, you will have to defeat them to progress through the tutorial mission.
Once you have defeated the first ninja grunt, you will have to face another grunt, with tutorial prompts for defensive commands. For this encounter, you will have to perform a guard (L1) and dodge (⭘) three times before you can use the attacks you performed in the first encounter.
For the third ninja grunt, you will need to perform a grapple (△) on an enemy with a depleted Ki, indicated by the blue bar at the top of the enemy becoming red. Attack the grunt until their Ki is depleted, then press △ to perform a grapple as a finishing blow.
After performing the grapple on the ninja grunt, the tutorial mission, "Basic Controls" will be completed. Interact with the glowing orb again to end the mission and to be teleported back to the shrine where you initially were. As a tutorial mission, completing this quest will not have any rewards.
