Elden Ring Nightreign Guardian Key Features
- Weapon Preference: Halberds
- Guardian is the archetypical tank character that can employ heavy, slow attacks, while also using his shield to take attacks in turn.
- Guardian's main role during Combat, is to be able to mitigate as much damage as possible, as well as building aggro to be targeted by the enemies.
Steel Guard Passive Ability
- This skill can be activated by holding Block (L1), and pressing Dodge (Circle) on the controller. This will put Guardian into a Stance that allows him to Block more effectively at the cost of movement speed and constant stamina drain. While in this Stance the Guard Boost of the shield is multiplied by 5, meaning he takes significantly less stamina damage while Blocking, allowing him to tank larger hits more easily.
- This skill can almost be used accidentally if you are not careful when playing Guardian, since you may wish to Dodge sometimes while holding Block.
- Anticipating when to use this skill is really the key to playing Guardian effectively as a tank, since you will not want to use this all the time.
- Since Steel Guard multiplies Guard Boost by 5, finding a shield with a higher Guard Boost is integral to getting value out of the Stance, especially during Night Lord fights when bouncing attacks off your shield is no longer a factor. Upgrading a shield will increase its Guard Boost considerably, so if your shield is still not upgraded, its worth considering buying a Smithing Stone on Day 3 for the extra efficiency.
Whirlwind Character Skill
- This attack hits 360 degrees around Guardian by pressing Triangle + L2. You can charge this skill by holding Triangle + L2 for a larger area of effect, but it will take longer to cast. Still it has a safer range than the default use of it, so try to get in the habit of using the charged version when possible.
- This skill is great for hitting many enemies at once and can knock them down, allowing for a safe opening for your team to attack.
Wings of Salvation Ultimate Art
- This skill leaps you high up into the air before crashing you down into enemies by pressing Triangle + R2. Continue holding Triangle + R2 to stay in the landing pose, projecting an aura that provides you and your teammates within the area immunity from damage. However, using this Ultimate uncharged will only consume half the Ultimate Gauge, making it usable again more quickly.
- At the point of impact, any near-death allies in range are instantly resurrected, regardless of the amount of damage needed to resurrect them normally.
- Excellent for fights where the Boss is actually multiple enemies if they are grouped tight enough.

Guardian Best Relics Guide for Nightreign
Recommended Relics for Guardian
With Guardian's higher Strength scaling, an even higher scaling of HP and Stamina, and given the name, Guardian can take more hits than the other Nightfarers can as well as block more hits.
Some recommended Relics to use for Guardian are Stone Stake, Third Volume, Witch's Brooch, Night of the Wise, Night of the Champion, and Night of the Beast. Click here to see a full build guide for Guardian.
The Stone Stake Relic is a red relic that can be obtained upon completing the Guardian's first Remembrance Quest. Check the walkthrough guide below for details on the quest. This relic lets you charge your Whirlwind, making it last much longer and deal more damage to enemies within the AoE.
Additionally, the second relic effect significantly reduces the cooldown for Whirlwind. This makes it so that you can activate this skill as often as possible to clear mobs quicker and deal more damage within an area.
The Third Volume Relic is a red relic that can be obtained upon completing the Guardian's third Remembrance Quest. This relic's effect creates a whirlwind around you when you charge a heavy attack with a Halberd, and restores HP on Halberd attacks.
This helps with damage using the Guardian's default weapon and lets you contribute to a fight where guarding is less imperative, but can pigeonhole you into using halberds for the run and may lose its value if you find better weaponry.
The Witch's Brooch Relic, or its alternate, the Cracked Witch's Brooch, is a blue relic that can be obtained by completing the Guardian's final Remembrance Quest. Both relics are functionally identical, and the version you get depends on whether you punish or forgive the Recluse during that event.
This relic's first effect restores your teammates' health whenever they are within the protective aura of Wings of Salvation, only stopping if you fully run down its duration or you stop maintaining the effect. It's easily the Guardian's most powerful team asset, bringing revived teammates to full health while giving them a window of safety to push the offense.
The second effect triggers damaging shockwaves whenever you block enemy attacks with Steel Guard, turning your defensive ability into a form of offense. Additionally, your Vigor gets increased, which increases your Health pool and increases your survivability.
- At the Collector Signboard, you can pay 3
to trade the Witch's Brooch for its Cracked version, or vice-versa. You must pay this cost every time you switch.
The Night of the Champion Relic is a green relic that can be obtained upon defeating the Darkdrift Knight Night Lord for the first time. This relic's first effect increases your Stamina, letting you block more attacks without risk of a guard-break.
The second effect boosts your Guard counter depending on your current HP, which ties into the Guardian's incredible Vigor for a powerful Guard Counter.
Finally, the third effect restores your HP when you perform a counterattack with a weapon that deals Thrusting damage, which also ties into your guard counters with halberds or spears.
The Night of the Beast Relic is a green relic that can be obtained upon defeating the Tricephalos Night Lord for the first time. This relic's first effect recovers your Stamina with each successful attack, which is very potent alongside your damage reflection shockwaves and extended Whirlwinds, as they will rapidly restore your Stamina that will be depleted if you're guarding a lot.
The second effect infuses your starting weapon with fire, which has niche uses on enemies vulnerable to that element. It can be replaced by any other relic that has "Stamina recovers with each successful attack" alongside a combination of better effects.
For Relic Effects that you will need to look out for: "Draw enemy attention while guarding" maintains aggro after you block attacks, drawing enemies to you to let your teammates continue to pile on damage. "HP Recovery from successful guarding" and "Art gauge charged from successful guarding" improve your guarding ability by healing you and filling your Art gauge every time you block anything.
Any effects that improve Guard Counters or trigger off Guard Counters aid the damage you do when you retaliate. Other useful effects involve any form of HP recovery or increase, an increase in Vigor, Endurance, Strength, or Poise.
Best Relics With Fixed Effects for Guardian in Elden Ring Nightreign
Polished Drizzly Scene can be purchased from the Small Jar Bazaar at the Roundtable Hold for
1000. This Relic has a fixed effect, which will provide the following:
- Draw enemy attention while guarding
- Vigor +3
It is an early Relic that gives a sizeable bonus to Vigor and aids with drawing aggro just by blocking enemy attacks, which improves the Guardian's ability to hold enemy aggro and continue blocking attacks. Note that you must be blocking enemy attacks, not just holding your shield up, to get this Relic's full benefits.
Grand Drizzly Scene can be purchased from the Small Jar Bazaar at the Roundtable Hold for
1000. This Relic has a fixed effect, which will provide the following:
- [Guardian] Reflect a portion of damage received when the ability is activated
- Vigor +2
- Endurance +2
This is a Relic that serves as an early substitute for the (Cracked) Witch's Brooch for players that have not finished the Guardian's remembrance quest.
Reflecting damage when blocking attacks using Steel Guard contributes to progressing a fight and maintaining aggro, and the Vigor and Endurance bonuses aid with survival and the ability to continue to block.
Grand Burning Scene can be purchased at the Collector Signboard in the Roundtable Hold for 3
. This Relic has a fixed effect, which will provide the following:
- [Guardian] Reflect a portion of damage received when the ability is activated
- Art gauge charged from successful guarding
- Endurance +3
This Relic is a red alternative to the (Cracked) Witch's Brooch, with a focus on enhancing the Guardian's blocking capabilities. Not only will you be reflecting damage while blocking with Steel Guard, but you will also be filling your Art Gauge.
The Endurance boost also extends your ability to block before getting guard-broken. However, as the Guardian has very few red slots among his Vessels, this Relic can compete with others for space.
Grand Luminous Scene can be purchased at the Collector Signboard in the Roundtable Hold for 3
. This Relic has a fixed effect, which will provide the following:
- [Executor] Character Skill Boosts Attack but Attacking Drains HP
- HP Recovery From Successful Guarding
- Art gauge charged from successful guarding
Even though this is a relic designed for the Executor, its second and third effects are perfectly usable for the Guardian's defensive skill set. When combined with the (Cracked) Witch's Brooch, you get a mixture of the Guardian's most powerful perks.
Elden Ring Nightreign Guardian Notes & Tips
- Voice Actors: Sartaj Garewal, Silas Carson
- Prioritize upgrading your shield rather than your weapon. Look for (great)shields with high Guard Boost stats to reduce the Stamina damage you take from blocking.
- The Jellyfish Shield is a rare greatshield that can drop from any Spirit Jellyfish. You can find them from frost-based ruins (with Ancient Heroes of Zamor) or in the central castle's moat.
- Any greatshield with Shield Bash also lets you contribute to damage without dropping your guard.
- Properly timing Steel Guard is what lets you shrug off massive boss attacks without losing your entire Stamina bar.
- Guardian's unique halberd moveset changes all R1s into thrusts (good for exploiting thrusting counterattacks) and all R2s into sweeps (intended for crowd control).
- You can charge your Guard Counters while wielding a halberd. It causes the Guardian to push forward, closing the gap on his target and dealing more damage and stance damage. This charged Guard Counter also hits multiple times on an enemy caught in the rush.
- Stamina regenerates more slowly while your guard is up, so it helps to drop your guard now and then in windows of safety to let it regenerate quickly.
- If you have the Witch's Brooch, you can exchange it at the Collector Signboard along with 3 Sovereign Sigils to obtain the Cracked Witch's Brooch. You may obtain the Witch's Brooch if you have the Cracked Witch's Brooch through the same process.
- Dormant Powers from forts and great churches have a 65% chance to contain an uncommon class weapon. Dormant powers from encampments and ruins have a 35% chance to contain an uncommon class weapon. Wylder's class weapons consist of greatswords.
- Patch 1.02.2 increased Strength and Dexterity when leveling up. It also increased the attack power of Halberd counters.
Nightreign Guardian Remembrance Quest Walkthrough
How to unlock and start Remembrance Quests in Nightreign
In Nightreign, players can randomly find journal entries related to the corresponding Nightfarer that they are using in an Expedition, which are key components to starting Remembrance Quests.
These quests provide a backstory to the eight Nightfarers in the game, with players starting a Remembrance through the Roundtable Hold. When completed, these Remembrances will give rewards to players, such as Relics and Garbs (Skins).
When players are stuck in a part of a Remembrance Quest, or if a journal entry is missing, they may start an Expedition with the Nightfarer that they want to progress the quest.
Then, defeat the Nightlord and the players will be able to do the next step of the quest. For more information about Remembrance Quests, players may visit this page.
Guardian Remembrance: Hunting a Guardian Golem
Part 1, Guardian Remembrance Objectives:
- Talk to Iron Menial.
- Defeat the Guardian Golem in Limveld.
NOTE: Requires the player to start an expedition as Guardian to unlock the journal entries that involve reliving a remembrance for Guardian. In some cases, defeating a Night Boss on the first day or even completing the expedition by defeating the Night Lord can also unlock the remembrance quest in the Journal.
As the Guardian, head to the "Journal" area at the Roundtable Hold to start reliving the Guardian's Remembrance. Open Chapter 4 of the Guardian's journal to begin her remembrance.
Find the Iron Menial and speak to him so you can explain the situation between the Guardian and the Raider. Keep talking to the Iron Menial until you get the "Personal objective" added notification. Your task is to start an expedition and hunt down the Cracked Golem in Limveld.
In Limveld, open the map, and you will see an orange quest marker which indicates the location that you have to investigate. Head to the marked location and simply defeat the Cracked Golem to progress the quest objective and acquire the Stone Stake item.
Upon returning to the Roundtable Hold, go back to the Iron Menial and give him the Stone Stake. You'll then receive an item from the Iron Menial, the Second Volume (Key Item). This completes the section of the Guardian's Remembrance Quest; interact with the remembrance gateway to conclude the remembrance and acquire the Stone Stake relic.
Guardian Remembrance: The Wandering Merchant
Part 2, Guardian Remembrance Objectives:
- Talk to Iron Menial.
- Speak to the Wandering Merchant
As the Guardian, begin an expedition and defeat the Nightlord to unlock the next remembrance quest. (Requires testing: defeated Gladius Beast of Night and unlocked Chapter 6 of Guardian's journal). Back at the Roundtable Hold, head to the "Journal" area and choose Chapter 6 to start reliving the second part of Guardian's remembrance quest.
Upon starting, head to the east room of the Roundtable Hold (open the map and look for the room above the Dressing Room) to find a Wandering Merchant. Speak to the specter and then leave the room.
(NOTE: you can speak to him before leaving the room and buy common Relics. Purchasing relics is optional, and buying out the stock unlocks bonus dialogue, but all relics on offer are overpriced and confer mediocre stat bonuses.)
Wandering Merchant's wares:
- x1 Delicate Luminous Scene,
1000 - x1 Delicate Drizzly Scene,
1400 - x1 Delicate Drizzly Scene,
1800 - x1 Delicate Tranquil Scene,
2000
After interacting with the Wandering Merchant, leave the room and enter the Expeditions room to trigger a sequence where the Guardian loses consciousness. Once you regain control of the Guardian, head back to the same room where you met the Wandering Merchant, speak to him, and choose the option "Eliminate", which kills the NPC.
You'll then acquire a key item, the Merchant's Ledger, and you'll also conclude the second part of Guardian's remembrance quest. Interact with the nearby remembrance gateway or travel to the Journal to conclude the second part of the Guardian's Remembrance. Completing this section of this Remembrance quest updates the Guardian's Journal and rewards the player with the Guardian's Chalice.
Guardian Remembrance: The Scale-bearing Merchant
Part 3, Guardian Remembrance Objectives:
- Talk to Iron Menial.
- Find the "Demon" Merchant in Limveld.
- Talk to Iron Menial.
Back at the Roundtable Hold, head to the "Journal" area and choose Chapter 7 to start reliving the third part of Guardian's Remembrance quest. Open the Roundtable Hold map, and you'll see a new exclamation mark appearing next to the Iron Menial.
You can find him in the small armory room. Speak to him about the merchant you just killed and show him the Merchant's Ledger. This will progress the quest and advance the Guardian's objective.
Start an expedition in Limveld, collect 10000 runes, and proceed to the red marker pinned on the map to find the "Demon" Merchant. Once you speak to the merchant, choose the dialogue option "I want the tome". You will need to pay 10000 runes to purchase the tome item, the Third Volume.
Next, when you return to the Roundtable Hold, find Iron Menial in the small armory room, and show him the tome that you just bought. This concludes the 3rd part of Guardian's Remembrance quest.
Interact with the nearby remembrance gateway or travel to the Journal to conclude the second part of the Guardian's Remembrance. Completing this section of this Remembrance quest updates the Guardian's Journal and rewards the player with the Third Volume relic.
Guardian Remembrance: The Witch's Deed
Part 4, Guardian Remembrance Objectives:
- Unlock the Revenant
- Examine the item on the bookshelf.
- Speak to Recluse.
To begin Part 4 of the Remembrance, the player needs to unlock Revenant as a playable nightfarer.
Back at the Roundtable Hold, head to the "Journal" area and choose Chapter 9 to start reliving the fourth part of Guardian's Remembrance quest. Upon starting, head to the room where the Small Jar Bazaar is and examine the bookshelf in the corner, on the right side of the doorway that leads out to the garden. You'll see a small glowing light that you can interact with to find a passage that you can read.
Next, find Recluse out in the garden and speak to her (you can find her standing near the large monument that Raider used to enter the Tourney of the Lands Between during his Remembrance Quest).
When you talk to her, choose the option "Are you the maker of the curse?", and you'll receive the Witch's Brooch item. Speak to her again, and when you get the option of either punishing or forgiving her. Choose the option "Forgive her misdeed".
- If you choose to forgive her, you'll receive the Witch's Brooch relic.
- If you choose to punish her, you'll obtain the Cracked Witch's Brooch relic.
Whichever decision you select will formally conclude the final part of the Guardian's remembrance quest. Interact with the nearby remembrance gateway or travel to the Journal to conclude the remembrance. Completing the final part of the Guardian's remembrance rewards the player with the following: x1 Remembrance (Guardian) outfit, x1 Witch's Brooch or the Cracked Witch's Brooch relic.
Elden Ring Nightreign Guardian Journal
Guardian Journal: Chapter 1
The Guardian was born in the Winged Realm, becoming a knight of the Pinionfolk, sworn to protect its lands and peoples.
In the splintered memories of the Guardian are two "flocks."
The old flock from his home nation, who he failed to protect — who died. And the new flock, who fare with him against the Night.
Guardian Journal: Chapter 2
This is the memory of the new flock. Of a meeting between the Guardian and a witch, both of whom were guided to the Roundtable Hold.
"There. Though I doubt thou wilt soar the skies as once thou didst.."
So murmured the Recluse, gently stroking the wing in sympathy. The Guardian felt the curse that eats away at his wing recede, its progress halted. He thanked her with courtesy, but the Recluse just shook her head in silence.
"Tis nothing. 'Twas for such times I learned what I did..."
The Guardian turned his eye to a nearby pile of books. "Perhaps, if armed with knowledge, I might have saved them," he thought. It was from thence that the Guardian began to address the Recluse as his teacher.
Guardian Journal: Chapter 3
This is the memory of the old flock.
In formation they took to the skies, cutting though the air with the ease of a single living being. From his vantage amongst the clouds, the Guardian spied the citadel below.
A hail of spears came hurtling from the ramparts. This was all part of the duty, as winged warriors of the scapular regiment.
The Guardian's corps took the van to shield the greater flock from the incoming projectiles, before receding to allow the talon regiment to plunge into the fortress. It would not stand for long.
In was through battle that the flock was whole. Until the cursed blades would come to rob them of their wings.
Guardian Journal: Chapter 4
This is a memory of the new flock. Ofa lesson learned at the Roundtable Hold.
"Bwahaha! Just put it on, I fixed it up for you, friend!"
The man known as the Raider was bold and boisterous.
"I knew it would be perfect for a fine knight of your stature!"
He was also a terrible meddler, and willful in his way. Having had the helm foisted upon him, the Guardian instinctively batted it away.
He knew the Raider had meant no harm, but he had simply laid down his helm long ago. Ever since the day he lost the flock he failed to protect.
Guardian Journal: Chapter 5
This is a memory of the old flock.
The guardian was the sole survivor of a war in which there was no hope of victory.
It was in battle that the flock was whole, and could rebuff any and all who dared face them.
Knights of the Pinionfolk feared not death. It was their duty and their pride to give themselves for the sake of the whole. The flock would always grow new feathers.
But with ease it was that the cursed blades stole from the flock their wholeness and unity, by instilling in them the fear of losing their flight.
Before the curse, the Guardian's shield was powerless.
Guardian Journal: Chapter 6
This is a memory of the new flock.
While in the study, in wafted the alluring savor of freshly-baked bread. The taciturn warrior must have been in a mind to cook.
Led by the aroma in the courtyard, the pirate's bellowing laughter rang out. The archer had an arrow aimed at the big man. The Guardian had no mind to stop their amusement, for he knew they were merely making merry. The swordsman said not a word, and headed to his easel.
They were a flock that was far from whole, imbalanced and uneven. He wondered if the word even truly applied.
It was around that time that the unfamiliar merchant arrived.
Guardian Journal: Chapter 7
This is a memory of the new flock.
After taking care of the Merchant, the Guardian heard a voice coming from behind.
"I suppose thou wert protecting thy flock?" said the Recluse.
"Indeed, Mistress. I consider our fellows of the Roundtable to be as you say."
In response, the Recluse nodded her head, unspeaking for a moment, then "l know the laws of thy people. Thou wilt not suffer those who endanger the flock to remain."
There was within the merchant's ledger a clue pertaining to the cursed blades. He asked the Iron Menial to help investigate.
Guardian Journal: Chapter 8
This is a memory of the new flock.
The third volume collected laid bare the secrets of the cursed weapon known as the Ictarus.
"The curse is the product of a sorcery from deep within distant land. A script put down in blood."
The Guardian remembered reading about this particular variety of magic. "Knowledge and knowing lead to protection." So he believed, of his knowledge gained under the tutelage of his teacher.
The Guardian knew now, for certain. He knew now of many stories: The tale of the pack of horses galloping across Windwail Knoll, the great adventures of the pirates of the coastal waters, the fearsome "Fellowship,- the wandering warrior whose habit was to preserve scenes with brush and ink. And finally, the tale of the Witch of the deep woods, who wielded cursed magics...
Guardian Journal: Chapter 9
This is a memory of the new flock.
The Guardian was forced to make a decision for the safety of the flock.
Eyes closed as he contemplated matters, someone approached.
"I do not like to interfere."
Across from him stood a girl who seemed more doll than human. The newest feather to find home within the flock.
"However, I owe the witch a debt. Even with what you now know, it is not too late."
And with that she left, leaving behind a scrap of paper.
Guardian Journal: Chapter 10
This is a memory of the new flock.
The Guardian could not bring himself to harm the Recluse.
Though she was indeed the one birthed the curse which wrenched away the wings of his former flock, she was one feather utterly essential to the new. The Guardian weighed both thoughts in his mind.
He knew then what it was that he must protect. And as proof of his knighthood, his very resolution, he would don the helm that the giant of a man had mended for his wear. Taking it in hand, the Guardian stepped forth with renewed purpose.
AnonymousIf I could change just one thing it would be to make his stamina start regenerating the moment he begins casting his whirlwind skill, sort of like how raider or undertaker can replenish their stamina with their skills. Would give you a reason to ever use it against things that can't be staggered by it, because it actually does do decent damage and poise damage if you can keep a target in the whirlwind for the full duration. As it is, you want to actively avoid using it at times because it will pause your stamina regeneration while casting, which makes it take even longer to get back to blocking effectively.

Anonymous
AnonymousMake his whirlwind smaller and split them up into several mini's that track on top of nearby enemies. Give him better crowd control/support functionality + a built in tool that ticks small hits of damage on larger enemies to more consistently pull aggro. Not every character needs to exist solely to make damage number big bonka oof, but support characters should at least be able to support. They went all out with recluse and scholar I just don't understand the vision with guardian's current tool kit.

AnonymousI wish his ability gave I-frames on startup. It's practically impossible to use when enemies are up in your face and the range of the attack is trash.

Anonymousmastermind strat is using a plain guard counter spam build and using greatbows to draw aggro

Anonymous
AnonymousImagining a world where guardian had 1600 HP at lvl 15, had like ten more points of stamina than raider, steel guard was automatic, had the dash guard counter with not only halberds, but great spears and heavy thrusting swords, and his ult couldn't be interrupted. Would people still hate on him as they do now? Or is HP damage the only thing people care about in this game?

AnonymousAfter doing every rememberance solo I can safely say that this is the worst class by far. Its like using lance in Monster Hunter in a game not build for that playstyle. From Software simps are just coping. "hE iS g0oD wiTh thE pr0Per rEliCs" well, that makes him not good, then, doesn't it? xD... the others are good without the relics.

Anonymouswhy does everyone online glaze this mf to hell and back but whenever i come across a guardian player in depth 5 they do no damage and get 3 barred on every night lord and never get to use the ult.

AnonymousJust hit 500 ar on a celebrants cleaver with no consumables or ash of war buffs, damage guardian is real you just gotta build for it

AnonymousI love Guardian, I love the idea and design of his character and his role in a team seems so fun. I spent half of my first 500 hours playing him since before deep of night even existed, but my god getting back into the game and trying to play him again is miserable. People know what they're doing now, so having a tank/healer isn't nearly as useful as it once was, especially when deep scaling means you'll inevitably eat way too much chip damage through your shield. How am I supposed to be the team's wall when a bad dodge and damage that can absolutely tear through shields makes my health a resource that is constantly being drained? Even with improved dodging there's so many instance where attacks just feel impossible to dodge through as him. It feels like the only good runs I have with him now, where I actually meaningfully contribute to the team, hang entirely on getting a good shield with Vow of the Indomitable, a great weapon with good passives (that would absolutely shred with other characters but instead does alright with Guardan) and a bunch of starlight shards to spam VOTI and whatever said weapon's skill is. Tank characters = good, this tank characters implementation = not so good. :(

AnonymousFunny how people complain about having to trigger steel guard but if it was forced upon you by default, youd have the same brainlets complaining that you couldnt use regular guarding instead
Steel guard is completely fine, learn how to use it and it will never disappoint
AnonymousI think guardian is in a good spot.
people say stuff like ult healing, shield shockwaves, skill duration, improved guard counters etc. should be innate but like think about that. imagine a nightfarer that could use a car door, one of the best support ults, a baked-in Banished Knight Disabler 9000, nuclear guard counters-- AND run double balancers at the same time. Mind you, he gets more damage than Wylder on all of his weapons, and more damage than Raider and Undertaker on 90% of their weapons too with the str/dex relic.
From a balancing standpoint, Guardian would exceed at too many things. Executor has braindead damage, but he at least has to not suck at rolling and deflecting to use it. Ironeye excels at one single thing- marking- and we've all felt how suddenly god damn useless Ironeye becomes when he isn't marking.
Buffed Guardian would be straight up tyrannical. He'd have zero downsides except for his odd dodge (which is pretty good due to its low recovery). And you wouldn't even need to learn to dodge because of the wonderful steel slab of i-dont-care-about-this-attack they give you.
AnonymousIn addition to the other comment about Executor: Suncatcher also gives him the ability to COMPLETELY deny any incoming status effect or elemental damage.

AnonymousRegardless of what you think of guardian (good, bad, whatever), he's been crazily neglected in terms of QoL. There's some really basic stuff that it feels like the devs genuinely forgot
- His unique charge for halberds not being on the other thrusting weapons
- His weapon discovery dormant power not being spread out like raiders (etc greatshields + halberds + spears, etc)
-His steel guard only working on shields rather then whenever he guards with anything
-His character relics making up too much of his power (some should be inate)
AnonymousThey gave executor the ability to lose no stamina from guarding at the right moment while Guardian has to do a stupid dash

AnonymousThe essential relic effects are:
"Successful guards send out shockwaves while ability is active"
"Slowly restores nearby allies' HP while Art is active"
"Increased duration for Character Skill"
For both solo play and in groups, these give you more stance and health damage, crowd control in encampments, and basically a free flask for you and your teammates upon using your Art. If you have relics with other passives like "Improved thrusting counterattack" and anything with crit hits, they're all pluses. For smaller statured enemies and bosses, they are all affected by the shockwave which staggers them each time.
I love my birb boy.
AnonymousHot diggity dog! I've been running dormant power helps discover torches and improved sorceries on guardian and he's sooooooooooooo good. How has no else caught on? You dont even need the evergaol relic!!!! Bird mains of reddit... assemble!!!!

Anonymousa lot of people said he need dormant power find greatshield , it's wrong.
he need dormant power find crossbow
remember how many time your aggro got steal by Ironeye and Mage class ? remember how many time you try to hit it to get agrro back but bosses are too fast to hit ?
crossbow (especially pulley crossbow) can fix this.

AnonymousHot take: Guardian isn't neither as tremendously super-bad nor super-great as people make him out to be. I get you don't like guardian cause 'he's bad'. I get you like him cause 'he's fun'. But at his core he suffers from questionable design decisions, many of his relics shouldn't be relics, and steel guard should really just activate with guarding or at least replace it with a flat guard boost. It's jarring to use, but also jarring to see people not even use it.

AnonymousThe relic that make his ultra recharge in each defense is really good.

Anonymousthat innate extra 10% guard boost actually does WONDERS now.

AnonymousWhen i use schoolar's ability to read enemy and give boost to allies attack, it works so well with the guardian lol

Anonymousguardian is too op. whenever hes on my team i cant stop gooning i need to put my controller down

AnonymousIt would be so cool if we could steal guard with two-handed weapons.
The two-handed charged guard counter with halberds is just sick
AnonymousWith the addition of the non-DoN respec relics in the collector signboard store, it's possible to use the Guardian's Chalice to fit both the quality and caster respec relics alongside Witch's Brooch. This gives Guardian 50's in Vigor, Strength, Dexterity, and Faith, giving him the highest baseline level in standard play. The downside is that this configuration uses all three standard relic slots, preventing you from fitting health/stamina recovery effects, aggro-pulling utility like whirlwind and Draw Aggression On Block, or powerful percentage-based damage buffs like evergaol/invader and the balancer relics. It sacrifices specialization in exchange for making Guardian the strongest generalist.

AnonymousAny Guardian who doesn't run "[Guardian] Slowly restores nearby allies' HP while Art is active" in trios/duos should never, ever play Guardian.

AnonymousA buffed shield allows room in your relic builds for less defense and more damage. Hit 320 on a celebrant's cleaver on my last run, pump them numbers

Anonymousthe damage negation buff in the new patch makes guardian take 5% less physical and 10% less affinity damage roughly.

AnonymousGuardian now has a 10% higher base guard boost with all shields in both normal and his special stance

AnonymousTo anyone who's saying his roll got buffed in the last patch, you're wrong. His roll is still the same. Same i-frames, same distance, same everything. Anyone who's saying otherwise is wrong

AnonymousRead this carefully , this knowledge should be forbidden.
Guardian with 2 balancer relics + relic have increase whirlwind duration.
2 deep relics
[Guardian] Improved Strength and Dexterity, Reduced Vigor.
[Guardian] Improved Mind and Faith, Reduced Vigor.
you will have 46 vigor , 22 mind , 38 endurance , 50 Str , 50 Dex , 38 Faith
46 vigor (1000 HP) with highest def = you are not fragile.
22 mind (155 FP) is enough to spam weapon skill.
50-50-38 in str-dex-faith make you have highest AR for most op weapon skill compare to other character.
whirlwind can CC , steel guard can tank , ultimate can revive 3 bar , highest AR for weapon that scale str-dex-faith.
and your dodge has been patched , now it viable.
AnonymousDormant Power Helps Discover Greatshield is really a game changer.
You will still be held hostage by the RNG, it does not secure Greatshields. But it means a higher chance of getting things like Visage Shield during your Everdark Tricephalos expedition and it is always great.
AnonymousFor birb sake give me a chalice R - B - B.
I want to use witch brooch + 2 harmonia relic
AnonymousDon't forget to two-hand your shield for more guard boost, it is very useful while low level or when in higher Depths on Deep of Night.
Also don't let any mythomaniac youtuber or player with stockholm syndrome fool you about Steel Guard or Guardian's dodge, it is poor design. The problem is that those people are used to dung cake, so any dirt filled cake they get is a treat, thus they will speak of it as if it were gold.
Anonymous'Dormant power helps discover greatshields' opens up the viability of using the '+200 HP while holding 3+ greatshields' relic effect. I'd recommend getting these effects in your normal relic slots so they aren't compete for space with deep relic effects. However, the odds of getting those 2 effects on top of all the other stuff guardian wants/needs is... Brutal to say the least.

AnonymousAs a Lance main in Monster Hunter, Guardian speaks to my very soul and no tier list is going to stop me

AnonymousHis ultimate can completely nullify any damage from Mohg's NIHIL NIHIL NIHIL. If you're a Guardian and neither teammates are dead or dying, save your ult for that Nihil move. Pop it, and HOLD IT. Anyone within its radius will take 0 damage.
Same page. If you see your Guardian ulting, stay near him. Remember, he's doing it for YOU.
Anonymousi wish guardian had charged guard counters for spears or something its very limiting only using halberds

AnonymousThis dudes absolutely tanks and destroys balancers (everdark too)

AnonymousThis class holds the undisputable spot for most wholesome, helpful and genuinely good "chill guys" playerbase, the least toxic playerbase by far and it's not even close, the kind of players that play Guardian are the same ones that leave golden summons to help you against the hardest bosses in base Elden Ring, Gigachads, all of you.

AnonymousBirb fellow , I have a question.
What should I do if I find the best shield for the day 3 boss, but its passive is "Less likely to be target" ?
AnonymousWhen I'm guardian and have a scholar in the group I always remember to pick up extra food along the expedition to feed them. They must grow big and strong for the flock, the group wide buffs or bomb barrages they can safely pump out with you around is nice for everyone!

AnonymousI'm tired of seeing my crow consistently be ranked D tier. IF your playing guardian to not use your shield you shouldn't be playing him in the first place, he's not made for huge damage, he is made for taking aggro and keeping the team alive. It takes some getting used too his passive but once it clicks, it clicks hard. Give this avian chance if you have been told to not bother with him. This bird will forever be my goat.

Anonymousthe DLC adds some extra text blurbs in his journal to reflect scholar and undertaker being present

AnonymousHot take but his remembrance chalice is probably his best for a non-rng build.
You can slot in blue for witches brooch. His only relic with two effects, one of them is veryyy much needed (dmg on shielding).
You can slot in yellow for the evergaol. Self-explanatory.
You can slot in white for night of champion. EVERYTHING about this relic helps guardian or is best used by him. It was genuinely designed for him.
AnonymousGuardian is good guys you just need
- Every character relic effect he has (very necessary)
- Every guarding relic (necessary)
- +Strength +Dex Relic (necessary)
- Every max hp up or max stamina up (necessary)
- Affinity negation (necessary)
- Hoarfrost stomp (near-necessary)
- Reduced Ult cooldown (near-necessary)
- Reduced Character skill cooldown (near-necessary)
- Stamina regain on landing attacks (to proc from his shielding and skill) (very necessary)
- Have pristine knowledge of when you need to dodge rather then guard for every interaction in the game, which is almost certainly never clear or obvious, and will net you a minimum of 100 hours on guardian before you start to understand those windows. That or you played base elden ring before.
It's just that simple
AnonymousBalancers dlc boss deals exclusively physical damage, guardian hard counters ez

AnonymousThis man goes from a C tier character to pretty much unkillable with the correct relics, he has ridiculos benefits from the proper ones like healing post damage/guarding.

AnonymousSo, on depths 4 and 5, how you guys deal with elemental damage taking 60% of your health through shield? (trios mode)
Just dodge? Enhanced dodge buffs? elemental negation buffs? Immutable Shield?
AnonymousWith time i've mastered the art of attacking the enemies with Shield Bash instead of his Halberd, i play mostly solo and made it all the way through depth 5 with this technique of mine, it requires a lot of skill and timing but once you master it, it becomes way better than relying on counter attacks or shield poking which are absolutely stamina slogs and dont have the innate defense of Shield Bash, of course you don't just spam it mindlessly, you gotta know when to dodge and maneuver around the enemy otherwise you will be vulnerable to grabs/status effects.

Anonymousa couple times during runs i've accidentally done this weird spinning backstep maneuver that feels like a dodge and goes way further than the normal step. i always do it out of a guard but i can't figure out how to do it in the sparring grounds nor can i find info on it online. i've done it multiple times, and i know it's not a skill (/ ash of war). does anyone know what this is or how it works?

AnonymousCountless posts disparaging the bird are allowed to fly free, and yet these mods have again silenced me for simply insinuating that perhaps Guardian could be better than Wylder. Truly nobody is as oppressed as guardian mains, we cannot even speak well of our character without fear of our posts being removed.

Anonymous
AnonymousGuardian mains aura farming as they casually block residential building sized meteor that was flying towards them at Mach 15 (they also wait for their teammates to get downed so they can actually contribute something during the boss fight)

Anonymousof course his unique relic that makes his charged halberd attacks do a whirlwind effect doesn't work with his unique charged halberd guard counters, i mean nobody really uses that relic anyways, but genuinely what was the thought process behind not making them blend together? sheer stupidity.

Anonymous
AnonymousAs a Guardian on my first victory against the ever dark Equilibrious Beast, I was staying alive, Tanking but also reviving my teammates so they do the real damage.
Today on depth 4, someone wanted to play Guardian, so I went as Raider. I did not regret my decision, Ravelord Nito played like a Chad, making use of all his 10 invulnerability frames to avoid Libra and the summons.
I gave him Ghiza's Wheel so he could quickly revive us, 0 regrets, he proudly used it. I kept my Rotten Greataxe, since I knew the opportunities to hit Libra are few and rot is very effective. Revenant played her part, we had a great victory.
AnonymousI would be a very happy Guardian if the range of the ult when free aiming was the same as the range when targeting and moving forward.

Anonymous
AnonymousMeta to beat PCR is rot rapier with big shield.
so Dormant power find rapier make birb can do ton damage to boss and still do tank role.
AnonymousThank you Guardian mains for being long time Raider allies, strength gang for the win! We fly together!
Like this comment if you agree, dislike this comment if you absolutely agree.
Anonymousplayed with a lame ahh guardian using cheated relics. He didnt want to follow the agreed pings, ofc a coward with cheated relics would act like that. Then he quit. Hope he lost some good ranking

AnonymousI found a build that make Guardian technically never lose in high depth.
normal Relic (Chalice - Blue + Yellow + All color )
Blue : Witch brooch
Yellow : normal Caligo relic (for chilling mist skill)
free slot : any relic that have guard gain art (god roll = guard gain art + kill fill art + HP with 3 great shield)
deep relic you need
1. dormant power find great shield
2. guard gain art +1
3. kill fill art +1
4. none of them have increase frostbite resistance
5. all should have curse : take damage make frostbite buildup
how to play
first of all , find a shield that have skill holy ground.
focus on guard , element attack still do some damage to you and it will make you frostbite.
frostbite make you invisible , that enough time to revive 1 people.
holy ground + chilling mist also make you frostbite = invisible = time to revive people.
good revive , ultimate fast , invisible , just focus on survive and your allied will rise up again and again.
Anonymousremember, you deal 0 damage at 0 hp. tanky survivable character like birdman over here can came in a clutch not only due to his passives, high stamina bar, and his aoe 3 bar resurecting ult, but also the fact that he starts with greatshield alongside the lack of greatshield spawning relic. shield block is one of the easier way to mitigate damage and attacks that can at times be better than rellying only on dodging or nuking the boss

AnonymousMake sure you get your Guardian Greatsheild (the one you start with) to +2 ASAP. Sure, you might find a better blue greatshield later on, but the benefits of the starting shield is a. you start with it, b. it has very decent stats across the board (no element is under 60 except for magic which is at 59), c. it starts off with No Skill as its AoW, which opens up your AoW options

AnonymousPeople complain about Guardian needing relics to win as if that's different for all the other Nightfarers. Try playing Revenant without her character-specific buffs. Or Wylder without +1 skill and greatsword follow-ups. Or Recluse without her ult buffs. Or Ironeye without +1 skill. Or Duchess without her skill atk buff

AnonymousDrop in. Throw away the greatshield. Upgrade the halberd to +2 with any status effects you want. Win

AnonymousI used to dread this character and the people that played him, but you guys really figured him out and proved me wrong. Well done.
-Wylder Enjoyer
AnonymousThe Deep of Night relic effect where you get more greatshields from Dormant Powers makes this character feel how he should have from the start. It's like the missing puzzle piece that should never have been missing. It's so dumb that you need a deep relic effect in order to get more greatshields to drop on the character that can't even use his 'passive' ability without a shield.
Fromsoft please...
Anonymous2 hand greatshield is very good.
you gain more guard boost , can do guard counter with greatshield (yes you can) , jump R2 do good damage and good stance break.
you can even rippost / backstab with greatshield lol
AnonymousWhat a Bastion of DoN, i kid you not, from depth 1 through 5, everytime i actually passed, it was thanks to a Guardian bro who absolutely carried, damn MVPs, big respect!

AnonymousJust had to pick my double Duchess teammates up off the floor a total of 32 times in a depth 4 Heolster run. The final fight took 10 minutes, but we won because in a game where death is the only lose condition the bird who cannot die is God.

AnonymousFaith Guardian has a very unique advantage: the fact that you're almost guaranteed to find a passive power you like. Guarding and guard counter perks? Of course I want that. Walking attacks? Hell yeah. HP, defences and resistances? Hand them over. Stamina? Gimme. Successive attacks? Perfect with the upgraded skill. Crit boosts? Guardian is THE stance break character (in solo). Incantation boosts? Naturally. FP boosts? In my mouth. It's very common with other characters to get nothing too useful from a boss reward but paladin Guardian will almost always get something that he likes, and it really adds up in the end

AnonymousHonestly, the issue with Guardian isn't even that his stats are bad, they're actually fairly solid, but that he has like 7 different button combinations that he needs to rotate through to get ~the same end result as just about every other character
Between:
- Ash of War
- Steel Guard
- Ult
- Char Skill (Especially in DoN)
- Guard Counter
- Shield Poke
- Charged Heavy (especially if you're using the halberd charge attack relic effect)
Taking advantage of all of these things for "beak berformance" feels like rubbing my gut and patting my head, except I get hot glued and bifurcated
AnonymousIf you're a birdman in depth 5 don't ping the map, consider me an NPC who will stick with you to the end of days

AnonymousThe relic that reduces your vigor but increases DEX and STR is actually a must-have. I know having less vigor sounds like a bad idea, especially in a gamemode where your health is more of a boolean value, but the boost in damage output MORE than makes up for it.
For comparison (assuming everyone is lvl 15):
Base Guardian has 60 VIG, 39 STR, and 29 DEX.
Base Wylder has 52 VIG, 50 STR, and 40 DEX.
Base Raider has 56 VIG, 68 STR, and 19 DEX.
With the "reduced VIG but increase DEX and STR, Guardian's statspread becomes 52 VIG, 48 STR, and 48 DEX.
That's right, for the incredibly minor downside of having the same amount of health as Wylder, you get to do the same amount of damage since most halberds have a B/C scaling in STR/DEX, respectively. Plus, unlike Wylder, you have a greatshield which improves your ability to tank damage (duh).
AnonymousHe's actually very good for deep of night, provided you remember to equip the draw aggro while guarding relic. Having one person hold the enemy's attention lets your Ironeyes Revenants and Recluses do their job in safety without getting one tapped every 10 seconds.
The new relic effect that gives your team extra damage negation when you use your whirlwind can also really make a difference even for your beefier teammates like Raiders and Wylders, and the buff's duration is actually longer than the skill's cooldown (at least it is with the extended duration relic effect on, haven't tested without) so you can keep it up constantly.
Anonymousdefeated ED Darkdrift Knight and I didnt feel like the increased stamina damage ruined much of the Guardian play, i think it seems pretty manageable
On the other hand, yesterday normal Caligo killed me through a level 2 shield on the Depth 1 lol abnormal chip damage, frostbite and guard break all in a sec dood I was speechless
AnonymousI just hit 435 attack with Godslayer's, this update is so good dude holy

AnonymousI was lucky enough to get the STR/DEX boosting depth relic already and I can safely say any complaining about guardian's damage with this relic is pure copium. He does so much damage now (provided you don't shield poke the whole time, please don't)

AnonymousUnlisted but great buff to guardian this last patch: His ultimate can now break open Smithing Stone statues for free Smithing Stone 1/2 and a free item! Now every character but Duchess, Recluse and Revenant can break open statues with their ultimate. Haven't tested with Revenant's ghost flame explosion since the update tho.

Anonymous3% (?) dex/str buff for someone who had low performance even with Evergaol relic. Iwill take every crumble I can get, but this is so funny

AnonymousTo add onto the comment below, Guardian did receive some indirect nerfs. Some Nightlords (most notably Everdark Gnoster) do WAY more stamina damage when you're blocking. With Guardian, it's not a super huge deal since his stamina bar is already massive, but Steel Guard no longer trivializes Nightlords who're weak to blocking (which is none of them but conjecture)

AnonymousBesides Duchess and Recluse, Guardian is one of the biggest winners of this patch:
- He gets more STR and DEX when leveling up. Not a huge change but it does buff his damage by a small amount.
- They made his ult radius bigger and FINALLY fixed the bug where you could get knocked out of it. If you didn't know, Guardian had a bug where he was invincible when he rises up into the air during his ult animation...but not during the part where he dives down. That means, if you're unlucky, you got get knocked OUT of your ultimate and waste the entire charge. Now, they extended the invuln. to the entire animation.
- Increased the power of Guard Counters with Halberds specifically. I'm assuming they're talking about the damage since GC's already do pretty nutty stance and poise damage, but again, it's a small increase. Helpful and welcome, but not earth shattering.
- THEY BUFFED THE ANGLE OF HIS STEEL GUARD PASSIVE
Before, Steel Guard functioned as a souped-up version of normal guarding. Anything that hit above you or to the sides, you still get hit. Steel Guard now gives you FULL 180 coverage. Of course, you still take damage if anything hits your ass, but now you don't have the directly face the enemy. Basically, if anything hits you behind where your right arm is (since he cocks his elbow back with his weapon), you'll still get hit, but everything else will be fully covered
AnonymousBird got a str/dex buff built into his base kit, we're so back

AnonymousBirb vs La creatura meme is coming
Now they will fight each other for starlight shard and seal (Deep relic make Birb's mind and faith very high)
AnonymousThis is not a tank, this is just a dude with a big healthbar, tanks can take aggro and protect their teammates, this bird just sits around twiddling his feathers until the boss finally stops running after that Ironeye and lets him pretend to be a tank for a few second until it gets bored. For the love of all that is holy please give this guy an actual taunt, make either steel guard or whirlwind focus enemy aggro unto him, this is such a sad character

Anonymouslong time play with rando , I really want to ask this question
Why Guardian main shield poke Miranda flower ? why don't you just attack it normally lol
AnonymousDon't sleep on the jumping heavy attacks both 1-handed and 2-handed on the bird. They're faster than charged heavies and allow you to maintain mobility or even dodge certain attacks while still hitting with your second strongest/staggering melee attack. Helps a lot with breaking poise on more nimble enemies or foes that you can't reliably guard counter.

AnonymousAlrit, lemme see if I understand it:
We will be able to play having 2 new stat presets (faith focused or quality focused)
This will only work on Deep of Night
Why? So we can only try a new stat approach if we are under the hardest game mode? Dude wtf man
Anonymousplease all Guardian stop using Fire deadly sin , You make me hungry

Anonymous
AnonymousBefore it's getting popular , here my vows
I expect YOU to tank at frontline , not hide behind me and throwing a disc.
If you want to play faith build , do it at frontline.

Question; with the +STR/DEX -VIG restat relic effect, another wiki says the total eff is -8 vig, +9 str, +19 dex, and some weirdly worded things about his bonus halberd/heavy thrust sword AP.
1. do I start the game with 2 vigor and end up with 52 at lv15?
2. assuming I understand the AP chsnge correctly and his weapon category AP bonuses are just flat removed, does the stat increase make up for the loss, and is there a different weapon category he's more suited to with the new totals?
