Stone of Penance in Nioh 3 is a gameplay feature added in Patch 1.05.00. The player can exchange an accessory for a Stone of Penance, which will strengthen enemies and also slightly increase the drop rate of high-rarity equipment while it is in use. Defeat the required number of enemies while carrying it to raise the +Value and rarity of accessories.
What is the Stone of Penance in Nioh 3?
The Stone of Penance serves as a high-risk, high-reward system for players looking to enhance their gear. This feature will be unlocked from the opening mission Escape from Hitokoto Slope onward in the Shogun's Journey difficulty level and can be used at Shrines. While the wielder holds this stone, their enemies will benefit from greater strength, but the drop rate of equipment with a rarity of Divine or greater will also increase.

Building Penitence
After receiving a stone at a Shrine, defeating enemies under these conditions will increase the Stone's Penitence level. You can monitor your progress via a glowing red icon on the bottom left of the screen, which displays the stone's current level (e.g., +1). Please note that the stone's Penitence will only increase during the Shogun's Journey difficulty level or higher.
Multiplayer & Co-op
The Stone of Penance also works in online multiplayer mode, so you can take on the challenge alongside other players! During multiplayer sessions, the effects of strengthened enemies and increased drop rates activated by the Stone of Penance can be enabled or disabled via the room settings.
Stone of Penance Options at Shrines
Once the Penitence is maxed out (reaches 100%), the player can offer the Stone in exchange for rewards and their previously offered accessory, with the accessory potentially receiving enhanced traits. When interacting with the Shrine at 100% Penitence, you are presented with the following choices:
- Resting Rites: Gives you back your accessory and offers a chance to increase either its rarity or its +Value.
- Subject yourself to even greater pain: Put the accessory back in to receive a higher-level stone (e.g., Stone of Penance +3). Maxing out this new stone increases your percentage chance of a successful rarity or +Value upgrade (for example, raising the chance from 70% to 90%).
- Discard: Discard your Stone of Penance and simply receive the accessory you surrendered without any upgrades.
- Return the stone temporarily: Temporarily hand the stone back if you do not want the hard mode active; you can retrieve it later to build up Penitence again.
Notes and Tips for Stone of Penance in Nioh 3
- Patch 1.05 added the Stone of Penance category to Gameplay Records.
- If you surrender an accessory that is already of Divine rarity, the stone cannot increase its rarity further because Divine gear is the highest rarity, but it can still increase its +Value.
- Related Achievement: True Atonement, Attained 100% penitence on a Stone of Penance.
- This feature also existed in Nioh 2.
