The First Peak.

In the wintry cold of the First Peak, only the strongest survive, and a dragon who commands frost has thrived longer than any other.

Legend states that a secret protective blessing that manipulates frost can be found at the peak, but the dragon pounces on anyone who might claim it.

Mountaintop is a Shifting Earth in Nightreign. Shifting Earths are expedition modifiers that affect the geography of Limveld, boss and enemy spawns, challenges, and a secret that poses an opportunity to gain unique rewards.

Nightreign Landscape Changes

This shifting earth transforms the northwestern section of the map into snowy highlands with a split-peak mountain reaching as high as the skies. There are several Spiritstreams in the area to help navigate the heights and crystals with powerful items scattered throughout. In the southeast corner of the mountaintop, you'll find a frostbite status effect elden ring wiki guide 25pxCold Ruins with a merchant outside it.

There are Spectral Hawk Trees that lead onto the mountaintop from the northeast and southeast quadrants of the map, which can help you get to the higher regions quickly. The northwestern Tunnel is gone, but the northeastern one still exists, opening into a low chasm from which you can Spiritstream your way to the eastern edge of the mountain.

Mountaintop Guide for Elden Ring Nightreign

Your primary goal when visiting the mountaintop is likely to be defeating the Mountaintop Ice Dragon and getting the guaranteed Legendary weapon it drops. While you can approach it directly in any of the four spots on the mountain it can appear, it's surrounded by a blizzard that quickly builds Frostbite and will prove a very difficult challenge for unprepared nightfarers. Before fighting it, you'll probably want to grab the Favor of the Mountaintop on the highest peak, and possibly pick up a few of the Improved Frost Resistance buffs offered by most bosses or the Attack Boost [Dragons] available from killing the Flying Dragon in the central chasm.

Approaching from the South

If you approach the mountaintops from the south, head towards the Flying Dragon in the central chasm. If you took the spirit hawk up to the frostbite status effect elden ring wiki guide 25pxCold Ruins, you can kill the Albinauric Archers as well, but it's probably not worth the detour otherwise. Ignore the Snowfield Troll on the southern path up to the mountain; it's one of very few fights that's doable as night is closing, so you can get to it later on. Once you defeat the Flying Dragon, continue north and turn left to fight a Demi-Human Swordmaster and climb up to the northwestern plateau with the Mountaintop Ice Dragon. Ignore it for now, and continue heading up the mountain towards the Favor of the Mountaintop.

Approaching from the East

The path is a little different if you're approaching from the east. Pass by the Snowfield Trolls on the eastern edge, saving them for later when night is falling. Instead, head north and fight the Demi-Human Swordmaster that guards that path. Once you pass it, don't immediately turn left; that will lead you right into a dragon blizzard. Instead, drop down to the north, then turn left. This will give you access to an extra set of crystals with a chance to drop a legendary weapon. Once you pass the crystals, scramble up the next set of pillars to the south and then again to the west to reach the Giant Crows fight. You may still spend a bit of time in the dragon's blizzard, but it'll be much shorter than if you'd come directly across the plateau where it sits.

Once the crows are defeated, you have a choice. If you're running low on time, you can cross the chain to the west and directly reach the Favor of the Mountaintop. But if you've got time, consider dropping down into the chasm and fighting the Flying Dragon for its Attack Boost [Dragons], then heading north and looping around the mountain to the northwest, fighting another Demi-Human Swordmaster along the way. This is better for ensuring that you get as many rewards from the mountaintop as possible.

Becoming Favored

The first time you receive the Favor of the Mountaintop, you'll get the silver-trophy-elden-ring-nightreign-wiki-guide-20pxMountaintop achievement. After that, it's time to fight the Mountaintop Ice Dragon. Head straight through the chamber where the favor is found and jump off the rock spur onto the platform below. Grab the item from the crystal for a chance at a Legendary weapon, then drop down again to the plateau where the dragon will appear and your battle will begin. With your additional frost resistance (and possibly extra dragon damage as well), this fight should be much more feasible than it would be otherwise. Be wary, though: reaching this plateau after dying is difficult, so don't let the whole party die or you'll lose a lot of time.

Cleaning up Afterwards

With the dragon defeated, it's time to start cleaning up whatever bosses remain in the region. As usual, you want to start with the bosses that are furthest away from where the final circle will appear. If you first approached from the south, this is a good chance to grab the northeastern bosses; if you approached from the east, you can get the Flying Dragon and the north-central Demi-Human Swordmaster if you didn't yet, or else head towards the Albinauric Archers in the southwest. Once the circle starts closing, you'll have plenty of time left to finish off all three Snowfield Trolls.

Mountaintop Strategy, Notes, and Tips for Nightreign

  • This shifting earth is particularly good for the Fissure in the Fog expedition, thanks to the substantial protection from frostbite status effect elden ring wiki guide 25pxFrostbite it offers as well as the Attack Boost [Dragons] which increases damage to Caligo, Miasma of Night by 5% across the board.
  • Adel, Baron of Night is a dragon icon 40pxDragon type boss, and so will take 10% extra damage if you have Attack Boost [Dragons]. In addition, he's relatively weak to frostbite status effect elden ring wiki guide 25pxFrostbite, making this a fairly effective shifting earth for the Gaping Jaw expedition.
  • Sentient Pest and Darkdrift Knight also feature nightlords who are relatively weak to frostbite status effect elden ring wiki guide 25pxFrostbite.
  • If time is of the essence, you may not want to hold up your team by stopping at each crystal formation to check it for legendaries. Instead, the player at the head of the pack can press the action button in passing to spread the items across the ground, and the players behind them can grab them if they're legendary or otherwise particularly valuable.
  • Mountaintop Shifting Earth can now appear in the Deep of Night mode. This change was added in the 1.03.1 Patch Notes.
