I see a lot of people malding about the compass taking a slot, but honestly, I think it's fine.
It actually incentivizes me to learn the world better so I can stop being reliant on it.
After two hours of dropping that compass, I could pretty much accurately gauge my position on the map 95% of the time.
Otherwise just swap it out for something more practical when you're stuck on a gauntlet or a boss or like a platforming section.

I'm sorry for this tirade, I just wanna get it out of me.

The compass, like the quill, should be a passive key item.

I appreciate that sense of unique relief, both in Hollow knight and Silksong, when I finally find the first map of the game, Team Cherry.
I also appreciate that cool moment when you realize, having the map is only a third of the tools you need to find your place in the world and to then further explore it. At least for me, I can't believe there are people in these comments that didn't find the tool when they first met Shakra and thus didn't need/use the compass to play the game. It's mind-boggling because I literally can't play the game without it.

In Hollow Knight, having the compass take up a notch wasn't a big deal. It cost 1 notch, you had multiple notches, you'd find extra notches, powerful charms would cost more than one notch, sure. But, since every type of charm (and thus build) would only be determined by the total number of notches required, flexibility in pins (and builds) felt great, since every pin could be combined with any other pin.
The compass could only offset your ideal build by one notch and if you REALLY, ABSOLUTELY need that extra 1 slot, you can mash that last charm in to over-charm the knight and take double damage. It's a big trade off but it rules because you can over come that through minimizing damage either through better gameplay (on the player's part) or through their build.

In Silksong, since Tools/Notches are separated into three types. Your tool build is dependent on the crest you use. This determines how many tools of each type you can use, the moveset of attacks and the bind which makes up the entirety of each crest's gameplay.
Team Cherry, being a great dev team, knew that means limitation in interaction between the three types of tools that you can use on your build. since Crests are a huge fun part of the game, the attack and bind moveset and the combination between TYPES of tools you resonate most with determine which crest you gravitate towards and thus, your overall play-style.
THEY KNEW any crest that didn't have at least 1 yellow slot dedicated to a compass would be fucking impossible to play for the majority of people, especially during exploration. (Speedrunners and repeat Players; tell me, would you rather spend the one yellow slot on the compass or the Silkspeed Anklets?) that's why Verticrests exist. so that even if your crest is witch or shaman you're covered.

But man, that yellow verticrest would be so much more useful spent on Silkspeed Anklets or literally any other yellow tool you desire. The compass is such an integral part of the game BECAUSE the majority of the game IS exploring and combat during exploration (excluding boss-fights, which are a significant part of the game, but much shorter on time spent compared to exploration). So is the map. So is the quill. So is the double jump, dash, clawline, etc (once you acquire them).

SO WHY NOT THE COMPASS, YA DRONGOS

It's the helldivers 2 effect; where you have to spend your one passive on coming out of your pod with full ammo instead of half.

Love how it's useless in HK when you get used to the small map but then you come to Silksong and it's unplayable without this with the map size and all the secret locations lol.

gotta love that one of the stupidest and most superfluous things from the original was preserved for the sequel

this really should've just been an unlockable that doesn't take up a slot. What kind of psycho would play without this?
