Greatshields are a type of Shield in Nightreign. Greatshields excels in providing the player with the best protection and damage reduction in combat, it is also a shield that can be used offensively to bash and stagger lighter enemies. In Nightreign, shields are slightly different than in Elden Ring, even though they have the same moveset, shields no longer have weight, stat requirements, or scaling, and can be used by all Nightfarers, without exception.
Some Shields will also have different Skills in Nightreign than what they had in Elden Ring, and for each run, shields are acquired randomly from chests and field boss drops. All Shields in Nightreign have a passive benefit that applies regardless of which hand or slot you put it in, as long as it is equipped, and you can equip up to 6 weapons at once. Any Guardian maxxers if you want a tip, i reccomend trying to grab a 'Dormant power' for Greatshields and THEN equipping the Relic that gives Guardian increased STR and DEX. What this means is you become Wylder levels of all rounder, and get mostly Greatshields in drops, and because of your Balanced STR/DEX you can use literally anything and go crazy with guard counters and fun stuff. I've been unironically having so much fun just using weapons i never use for Guardian but use on Wylder, So many great guard counters. Straight Swords are killer at guard Counters.
BONUS: If you didn't know, Shields were given their own Guard Counters in this game (unsure if it was in base elden ring) however the biggest thing is that Shields CAN GRAB CRITS in nightreign. So if you wanna rrelive double door shields from DS3, give dual shields a try and it's unironically fun as hell, especially because Greatshields have some of the highest stagger damage with guard counters, so now that you can actually grab the crits, you can abuse it hella hard.

Fromsoft please, let Guardian receive more greatshields in his item pool. I swear getting a greatshield from a boss drop is rarer than getting a legendary

The average elemental damage reduction of all Greatshields is 60% exactly.
Dragonclaw has the best Lighting DR @ 80%.
Redmane has the best Fire DR @ 73% (Visage with a close second @ 72%).
Eclipse has the best Magic DR @ 73%.
Erdtree has the best Holy DR @ 77%.
However, the most "average" shield with stats closest to 60 is the Fingerprint Stone Shield, with the highest deviation of 2 from the average. So this will provide the most consistent defense if you can get it (also has Madness on attack to help with EB/Libra).
The highest DPS shield is Visage by far.
