Melina is an NPC in Elden Ring who acts as a guide to the player throughout the game's narrative. She is a mysterious young lady seen in an opening cutscene with Torrent, the Spectral Steed, and first met at the beginning of the Tarnished's journey. Melina wears a black robe and approaches players while they are resting at different Sites of Grace. She offers guidance throughout the game, granting the ability to turn runes to strength, and teleporting you to certain key areas. She also later becomes available as an NPC Summon. Furthermore, the Shadow of the Erdtree (SOTE) expansion strongly implies that she is the younger sister of Messmer the Impaler, revealing that much like Messmer, she too bore a vision of fire and shares a deep, inherent connection to Queen Marika.

Melina Location in Elden Ring
- Melina will reveal herself at different Sites of Grace along the game's storyline. The player is also able to converse with her via a "Talk to Melina" option when sitting at other Sites of Grace even when she does not automatically appear.
- Melina is first met after resting at Gatefront Site of Grace, by Gatefront Ruins or another overland Limgrave Site of Grace, after activating a certain number of them. Other potential Sites of Grace: Church of Elleh, Seaside Ruins, and Agheel Lake South.
- When activating a Site of Grace on the overland that is located outside of Limgrave and Weeping Peninsula, resting upon one will trigger dialogue after which Melina will transport the player to the Roundtable Hold. The common Sites of Grace that trigger this are the Lake-Facing Cliffs in Liurnia of the Lakes, and Sellia Under-Stair or Smoldering Church in Caelid. These locations can be accessed relatively early if the player knows how to reach them. (Sellia Under-Stair can be reached the earliest, through a transporter trap chest in a basement cellar in Dragon-Burnt Ruins that brings the player to Sellia Crystal Tunnel, from which they can exit to find the Sellia Under-Stair Site of Grace).
- NPC Summon: Morgott, the Omen King. Progress in the Melina questline until she leaves. Her summon sign is at the top of the stairs on the right, in front of the fog gate. She wields the Blade of Calling and uses Erdtree/healing incantations.
Melina Questline: How to complete Melina's Quest
(Melina does not have a traditional completable "NPC Quest", since she's so strongly tied with the "Main Quest" of the game, but the following lists the opportunities for interaction)
- After resting at a Site of Grace (outside of the Church of Elleh) on the overland, Melina will manifest herself and reflect on the absence of a guidance during your journey so far, appearing out of the air with a blueish aura around her. Melina proposes an accord: to act as your "maiden", that is, as a guide throughout your journey, for you are "maidenless". In exchange, she requests you take her with you to the Erdtree. She volunteers to "turn your Runes into strength", enabling you to level up your character. She will also bequeath a ring, the Spectral Steed Whistle, allowing you to summon the spectral steed Torrent who has "chosen you".
- At the next Site of Grace you rest at before entering Stormveil Castle, selecting the "Talk to Melina" option will trigger a conversation about the Sites of Grace. During this, Melina conveys the golden auras at the different Sites of Grace are in fact the grace of the Erdtree, and by following them, the grace will guide you through your burden. She informs you that a Shardbearer resides in Stormveil Castle, and that if the rays signal the castle, the Elden Ring is beckoning you.
- At the next Site of Grace you rest at before entering Stormveil Castle, selecting the "Talk to Melina" option will trigger a conversation with Melina about her purpose, where she describes her search for her purpose and also apologizes for acting as a Finger Maiden while being unable to offer guidance, as she is "no maiden" and without purpose.
- At the Third Church of Marika, when resting at the grace and selecting the "Talk to Melina" option, Melina will appear and declare that spoken echoes of Queen Marika the Eternal are present, and if you wish she will convey them to you. Select the "I'm interested" dialogue option and she will continue to describe the echoes.
- At the Church of Pilgrimage, in the north of the Weeping Peninsula, when resting at the grace and selecting the "Talk to Melina" option, Melina will again appear and give the option to elucidate on the echoes.
- Upon reaching the East Capital Rampart Site of Grace (or any grace in Leyndell), Melina will appear and say that she will be leaving, but that she will let you keep Torrent and the ability to turn runes into power. She reasserts her confidence that you will become the Elden Lord.
- Melina may be summoned for the fight against Morgott, the Omen King via a sign directly outside the boss arena.
- After defeating Morgott, trying and failing to enter the Erdtree and resting at the Elden Throne Site of Grace, Melina appears. She offers a new accord: to bring her "to the flame of ruin, far above the clouds, upon snowy mountaintops of the giants", so she can set the Erdtree aflame, and help you become Elden Lord.
- Melina will then have additional dialogue when resting at certain Sites of Grace, the Godrick the Grafted Site of Grace for example. She will remind the player of the new goal in the land of the giants. She can then be spoken to a second time, and she will say that although her purpose was giving to her by her mother, she is now acting on her own volition and has "set [her] heart upon the world that [she] would have. Regardless of [her] mother's designs."
- Melina must be talked to in the Forge of the Giants Grace, and her quest will be fulfilled.
- If the player has inherited the Frenzied Flame despite Melina pleading them not to do it, Melina will not appear in this grace. Instead, she will appear after the ending of the game if the player continues with the Frenzied Flame path, and will threaten the Lord of Frenzied Flame with Destined Death.

Melina Notes & Trivia
- Melina's internal name in the game files is "MaricaOfDaughter". Her dialogue in the base game heavily hints at Queen Marika being her mother. This is confirmed in the item description for Messmer's Kindling in the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, which also reveals that Melina is the younger sister of Messmer. Finger Reader Enia also mentions that "for the flame to burn the Erdtree, a sacrifice is needed. Of one who envisions the flame". This would make Melina either a demigod, or otherwise an Empyrean if she was born from the union of Radagon and Marika.
- Messmer's Kindling cannot be used in place of her as kindling at the Forge of the Giants.

Upon his death, the spectral steed can be summoned again, but doing so drains the Flask of Crimson Tears.
Rold Medallion
Conjoined split medallion depicting the Flame Peak.
Brandishing the medallion activates the Grand Lift of Rold, connecting Leyndell to the Mountaintops of the Giants.
The forge of the flame of ruin is said to be found upon their peaks, and it is here Melina wishes to travel in resuming your journey together.

I really like my gloam eyed queen maiden, but i wish we could interact more with her, or can summon her more than just against morgot the margit+0.5 upgrade.
Sadly the dlc add nothing in relation with her or the frenzy flame ending, and i wished that we know more about her without taking the frenzy flame ending.

She burn the erdtree with normal flame but "The black flames wielded by the apostles are channeled from this sword." from the godslayer GS meant that when she lost against marika/maliketh she altough lost her blackflame power, so she can still use "normal flame" just she has to empower it with the giant bowl

Feels like Fromsoft had her designated as the lead waifu but half-way through development decided to give that title to Ranni and then tried their best to forget about Melina. Fun fact: Preceptor Miriam's name comes up more times in the DLC than Melina's, despite the latter being Messmer's sister.

I believe Melina and Mesmer are children of Marika, like how Millicent and her sisters are children of Maliena and Trina is to Miquella. No father just people made from their mother’s bodies. Messmer was made to help Marika defeat the Hornsent and reach divinity, and Melina was made to help marika end her reign. Being the Gloam eyed queen and visions of flames (black flames maybe). Just a theory.

The way I see it for Melina to make sense as the GEQ when Enia stated "The Rune of Death...plucked from the Golden Order upon its creation..." was not was not when Melaketh bested the GEQ, rather this is what Melina means by "For my purpose, given to me by my mother inside the Erdtree, long ago." and as the Remembrance of Maliketh describes "Marika's sole need of her shadow was a vessel to lock away Destined Death." the "her" here isn't Marika, rather "his Empyrean" (Marika is already a god anyway) mentioned earlier which his arena has a statue of, and the GEQ is said to be an Empyrean. After melina's death "For the reason that I yet live, burned and bodiless" is when Marika gave Destined Death to Maliketh/Gurranq, hence the significance behind when Melina says "My purpose...was long ago lost."
If this is the case, then what's Melina's purpose given by Marika? I think is what the echo of Queen Marika was referring to "My children beloved. Make of thyselves that which ye desire. Be it a Lord. Be it a God. But should ye fail to become aught at all, ye will be forsaken. Amounting only to sacrifices..." We know this doesn't necessarily just include the demigods as we know them now because of the Windmill Village. And to create the age of plenty where the only people can truly die is by the control of the Golden Order.
Of course, this begs the question: why was Melina burned? It might be one of three reasons; when the GEQ and her godskins were making literally clothing from gods, this reminded Marika of the treatment of the Shamans by the Hornsents and the GEQ was punished for it; having visions of the flame of ruin is anathema to the Erdtree. Messmer's Kindling strongly implies that Melina did too. While Messmer received banishment, Melina may have join with the other burnt prophets we see a-cross the Lands between; Melina burned the greattree which left the erdtree as only an object of faith or she was blamed for the death of Godwyn and was executed because of it (which would explain her resentment towards the erdtree).

Why do I need to go at the gatefront ruins on foot just to get the horse whistle when she's already there at the cave of knowledge? ***** and she didn't even give me the summoning bell herself. Essential tools. Like you need to warp back at Elleh just to get it from Rani, who can give me something else useful like a blasphemous blade or w/e. I wish they made Melina appear at the site of grace everytime that you want to level up, or at least made her as an NPC at the roundtable hold for you to speak with her, it's kinda weird not having her appear when leveling up since she's the one "turning our runes into strength", or maybe I'm just used to previous Fromsoft games having an NPC do that for us idk, it just feels weird.

I've reverted the shitty "translator's notes" that were full of pretentious drivel (and, at times, outright delusional). Whoever wrote them sounded like they learned Japanese for less than a year and used Google Translate for the rest, or they wouldn't be obsessing over trivial matters like the difference between "in" and "at" or making tenuous connections between kanji that are actually just complete flights of fancy if not supported by the text itself. An actual translator would understand that some words will inevitably changed on translation and not need infinite annotations describing the original text.

We need to talk about how bad Melina is as a character. She appears once to give you torrent, leaves you in altus, then burns herself and the erdtree. Like we cant even say hi to her in the roundtable hold. Such poor character design. Atleast we can marry Ranni and she gives you a sword. She is a way better maiden. I want to actually connect to the characters in the game i'm playing.

If one notices carefully, the guidance of grace leads you to areas and people significant to the story and more specifically, to the 3 main endings. Grace leads you through Limgrave, Stormveil, Raya Lucaria and onward to Altus because that's the main path to become Elden Lord. Grace also leads you through The Caria Manor and towards Radahn because that's how you achieve the Age of Stars. And it leads you southward to Castle Morne because following that story of Edgar, Irina and Hyetta leads you to the Frenzied Flame.
So why does grace lead you to Millicent? Not just her, it also leads you to Castle Sol, and the whole point to that area is to acquire a medallion to access the Haligtree. There is no ending associated with Malenia, no "Age of Rot" or anything like that. So why does the pattern seemingly break for this particular case?
The answer I've come up with is that it does not. Because Millicent's questline is directly tied in to the endings of the game and to the fates of both the Tarnished and Melina. Though it does not give you a separate ending, it does give you the means to undo a particular ending and frees you to choose any other, and doing this is described as "cheating fate". I also want to direct attention to Kale's cut questline and the fact that the "NPC advisor to the player" role they had for the FF path was instead given to Melina. The obvious implication is that this path ties directly in to her fate and you as the player have to make that choice. Putting both together, saving Melina and undoing the Frenzied Flame is very much tied in to a so-called "intended" path. It's just somewhat more obscure than usual.
Side Notes:
1. The Tarnished curing the FF is not like Malenia or Millicent at all. The needles were flawed in some way and they didn't do it in a place outside time like the Tarnished did in Farum Azula to cover up for that deficiency. The game prompt also says that it is irreversible and calls it "cheating fate".
2. IU Melina not showing up again may have nothing to do with her being angry. She may just as well be completely unaware of your plans for curing yourself. Her saying "should you rise as the lord of chaos" may very well be her saying "should you defeat Maliketh, release DD, and defeat Radagon and EB and ascend to Lordship". It is not taken for granted that the Tarnished will ascend to Lordship, even at that point. By simple Occam's razor, this is far more likely to be what she meant rather than "should you follow a path way off base and cure yourself of the Frenzied Flame".
She is 100% the gloam eye queen. The last thing she does is send you to kill Maliketh, what she couldn't do. Not to mention the weird purple "gloam" eye she has in the frenzied flame cutscene. It's all there they just don't say it.

So I bought Elden Ring and I’m having a great time but I can’t figure out how to level up. I said no to the lady because I was confident it wouldn’t affect the game at all. Since then I’ve been waiting for the game to introduce leveling up but it never came. The random lady also keeps setting herself on fire for me and taking me to this place called the “Roundtable Hold”. It makes me feel like she’s supposed to be important or something but I can’t quite figure out how. I’m currently fighting Radagon at lvl 9 with my +0 halberd on ng+7 and can’t shake the feelings I’m doing something wrong as I feel slightly underpowered for this fight. I wonder if the games any different if you say yes to the random lady at the start.
I should try that some time.

Okay, first, I do respect all the effort put into explaining the translations and think they deserve a place on the wiki. That said, I do not think this page is the place for them. I cant even find her dialogue in the third church anymore, that appears to have been deleted, and it's almost impossible to know when/where a lot of these dialogue are taking place because it has a narrative structure. I'm going to suggest we make a new page for all the solid work that has been done here and revert this one to its previous state, and link the new page on this one. Hope nobody takes this the wrong way I just think it'd be easier to find the info people are looking for.

Not particularly against the idea that Melinda’s the Gloam Eyed Queen, but I am confused that, if this IS the case, what exactly are her motives then? The Gloam Eyed Queen was said to be all about death, and not just death, but Destined Death, and its black flame. She was also clearly against the Golden Order. But that said, Melina HATES the Frenzied Flame, going as far as to kill you if you become Lord of Frenzy. She talks about how the frenzied flame kills permanently, not giving life any chance to sprout again. But… isn’t that what destined death does?
