Draw the Executor's Blade that can deflect enemy attacks.
Repeated deflections reveal blade, enabling powerful attacks with the living sword. The blade lost its voice, but is forever loyal to its master. |

Suncatcher is a Nightfarer Skill in Nightreign, exclusive to the Executor Nightfarer. It's also known as Cursed Sword until the Executor's Remembrance Quest has been fully completed. In Elden Ring Nightreign, every Nightfarer comes with a set of three abilities unique to their class: a Passive Ability, a Character Skill, and an Ultimate Art. Suncatcher serves as Executor's Character Skill.

Information of Suncatcher Skill in ER Nightreign
- Nightfarer: Executor
- Skill Type: Character Skill
- Draw the Executor's Blade that can deflect enemy attacks.
- This skill has no cooldown. Pressing the Character Skill button combination will put the Cursed Sword away and revert to your normal weapon.
- The Suncatcher skill utilizes the Cursed Sword, which allows players to deflect incoming attacks using L1, functioning similarly to the deflect mechanic in Sekiro. A successful deflect is indicated by a bright orange spark and a loud clang on impact. Landing a deflect deals stance damage to the attacker and costs significantly less stamina than blocking normally would. For multi-hit attacks, players only need to deflect the first hit in order to deflect all subsequent strikes in the sequence. Through testing, the deflect window has proven to be quite generous, offering an even larger timing frame than what players may be used to from Sekiro. When attempting a deflect, it's worth trying to deflect early, since a mistimed early deflect will still register as a guard and simply consume stamina instead. Deflecting too late, however, will result in the Executor taking damage. It's also worth noting that deflecting is distinct from Parrying with items like Small Shields, and will not interact with or benefit from effects such as "Parries produce Golden Retaliation.
- The Cursed Sword itself deals physical damage and scales primarily off Dexterity, but does not inflict any ailment buildup on its own. Despite its appearance, the Cursed Sword does not count as a katana, meaning passive effects that augment katana attacks will not trigger while it is drawn. It also does not benefit from any relics that alter the Executor's starting armament. Additionally, drawing the Cursed Sword will cancel any active weapon buffs that are currently in effect, and the Cursed Sword itself cannot benefit from those buffs either.
- With the Cursed Sword drawn, the Executor is unable to run, and his dodge-roll is replaced with a shorter dash.
- With the Cursed Sword drawn, you'll gain a unique dashing slash skill. This skill can be used as a normal slashing attack or an enhanced version if you notice the sword glowing, which deals extra damage.
- To trigger the enhanced version of the unique slash skill, you need to charge it up by blocking/deflecting a few attacks. Each block will contribute 1 point toward charging Cursed Sword, while each deflect will contribute 3 points. 10 total points are required to fully charge Cursed Sword.
- The dashing slash skill will expend the charge.
- If the Cursed Sword is fully charged, it stays charged even if you put it away or if you are downed. However, the skill will not retain its charge if you are fully killed.
- The dashing slash skill can also count as a deflect, though there is a slight delay from when the skill button is initially pressed.
- A hidden mechanic with this skill is what we want to refer to as "Switch-deflect". Whenever you switch to or from the Cursed Sword, it can count as a deflect. So if you switch between your normal weapon and the Cursed Sword at the exact moment an enemy attacks, you can deflect the attack.

Notes & Tips of Suncatcher Skill in ER Nightreign
- Regarding relic effect "Switching Weapons Boosts Attack Power" - this boost does not trigger when drawing or putting away the Cursed Sword. However, any passive effects from equipment that require them to be on-hand (such as "Successive attacks restore HP") will be retained while the Cursed Sword is drawn.
- Regarding relic effect "Character Skill Boosts Attack but Attacking Drains HP" - the Executor gains an 34% attack boost while the Cursed Sword is drawn, but having the Cursed Sword out will also reduce damage negation. Putting the Cursed Sword away immediately cancels both effects. Since update 1.03.2 the relic effect was changed from an HP drain per swing to the reduced damage negation, and massively increased the damage of the Cursed Sword.
- Regarding relic effect "While Character Skill is active, unlocking use of cursed sword restores HP" - when the Cursed Sword is fully charged by deflecting attacks, the Executor is healed for 100 HP. You must expend the charge and deflect more attacks to trigger this effect again.
- Deflecting attacks also counts as successful guarding, so every relic and passive effect that triggers on guarding - "HP Recovery From Successful Guarding", "Draw enemy attention while guarding", and "Art gauge charged from successful guarding", etc. - all work.
- Anything that isn't a grab can be deflected. This includes massive explosions.
- It is also possible to do a Guard Counter after a successful deflect.
- With the Cursed Blade drawn, "while Walking" dormant powers will consistently trigger while you move around.

AnonymousMy headcanon is that the executor we see and hear in game is actually just Suncatcher talking and moving a flesh mech

Anonymous
AnonymousDamn they gave him the best weapon in the game as his character skill.

AnonymousAura-farming by keeping the boss distracted with this while your buddies revive each other.

AnonymousThis thing is now insane with the recent buffs. One of if not the highest crit damage builds in the game, extreme stamina efficiency, highest raw damage "katana" with the relic buff, poise breaks galore, aura.

Making the Suncatcher draw enemy aggro would be such a huge buff.

AnonymousDoes pressing L1/LB (holding sword over the head for guard) count as a "guard" for the relic "Guard draw attention of ennemy "
???
AnonymousThe ability is honestly very underrated as despite the fact that dodging can be better for many scenarios, certain moves with large hitboxes like Caligo's moves only need you to parry "the beginning" of the move in order to negate the whole attack, same with multi-hit moves that typically cannot be dodged in quick succession but can be deflected multiple times quickly.

Anonymous"Anything that isn't a grab can be deflected. This includes massive explosions"
Way to undersell it. Suncatcher can deflect clouds of icy wind, fire, and earthquakes, and the example we went with is "massive explosions"?
Anonymous
AnonymousThis Suncatcher dmg table is outdated. At level 15 dmg for R1 is 150

Anonymous
AnonymousThe follow up does way to much now (pls dont get nerfed) with 10 physical buffs and the increased damage when drawn. It does like close too 1000 damage on the training dummy.

Anonymous2h effects work on the weapon, holy dmg buffs affect glowing slash

AnonymousSomething I think should be added here; during the skill attack (the one that can be powered up by deflecting) there is a deflection window while the Executor is at the peak of his draw (all the way back) before striking. This can be observed in one of ONGBAL's latest videos, and is really really interesting!

AnonymousDoes the charged skill do physical or holy damage? I wished they gave us a holy katana instead of this skill honestly

AnonymousOver 300 expeditions wins with Executor, who's all I play, and I think this ability is disgusting. The skill potential is insanely, insanely high. When you're actually pushing the limit of deflecting and switch-parry you down bosses ridiculously quickly, especially any enemies with rapid combos like BBH (corkscrew), Grafted Scion, Royal Revenant, or anybody with long combos like most bosses or Banished Knights. When you know combos by heart, parry flawlessly, and guard counter at the end, you absolutely farm staggers which are broken in Nightreign because of the team nuke that happens on the riposte.
I don't think there's any problem with the damage, because that's what your main hand is for. Also don't downplay the damage of L2, it's pretty good, and the more you parry the more you get it. The purpose of Suncatcher is to make it so that we never have to roll (save a few exceptions), which saves us time and stamina, all while cranking stagger on the boss.
My greatest criticism of this skill lies in how slow the recovery of L2 is (you can die for using it, meanwhile Iron Eye and Raider's hardly need to look at the screen to use their ability safely). For example, the recovery is so slow that even if you waited for a proper punish window, like BBH's final combo attack, you're in recovery for so long that they can start their next combo and still get a true punish on you. In fighting games, this is called being "minus on hit".
So if they just reduced the recovery or gave it i-frames I'd be forever happy as an Executor.
AnonymousDoes the charged attack (when the blade glows) deal any holy damage or is it purely physical?

AnonymousWhile the damage of this sword is lower than most weapons it's extremely stamina cheap to swing. If you have the 'Stamina Recovers with Each Successful Attack' relic effect you can attack and deflect for a very long time without needing to regenerate stamina.
If you want to increase the damage output for Suncatcher I wouldn't actually recommend prioritizing the skill upgrade for it since it's only an 8% boost for that -10 HP on hit downside. You may find better results using more general damage boosts such as 'Physical Attack Up +2' or 'Attack Power Permanently Increased for each Evergaol Prisoner Defeated'.
The cursed sword does not prevent any "Red Hand" (those that need to be equipped to be active), even if that weapon was on the right hand slot.
For example: wielding Hand of Malenia on the right hand then switching to cursed blade still keeps the Malenia life recoup passive fully active for the cursed blade.
AnonymousSkill cooldown time relics should decrease the amount of hits it takes to activate L2

Anonymous
AnonymousFeels so good to use against crucible knights, but you just do so little damage to them because of their resistance to slash and ripostes.

AnonymousThe golden charged slash deals pure physical damage NOT holy damage. Extensively tested on dummies in roundtable hold.

Anonymous
Anonymousits called cursed sword if you dont finish his rememberence, and suncatcher if you do. Neat detail

Anonymous
AnonymousSkill cooldown relics make suncatcher do more stance damage per deflect

AnonymousHow many active deflect frames are there? Does anyone know? What about penalty frames for missed deflects?

Ordinary weapon skill of the suncatcher has short parry and Inhanced suncather has parry&iframes. Not very useful but might come in handy occasionally.

AnonymousIt gets a damage buff from "Improved Initial Standard Attack" (114 -> 129 against the target dummy ), but doesn't seem to be able to activate the "Successful Parries Activate Golden Retaliation" effect and I'm not seeing any change from "Improved Stance-Breaking when Two-Handing" against the marionette in the training ground.

AnonymousThe problem isn't Executor it's that he can't recovery cancel into suncatcher from his attacks. His passive should give him extra recovery frames or something of that nature.

AnonymousI've had my correctly timed parry get dead angled when I'm locked onto the boss (Everdark Fulghor, last hit of his 10 hit combo). Why does this have to suck in so many different ways dude

AnonymousHow about if the activated l2 attack without buffing its damage, mark any enemy and make it vulnerable to any status effect to make it viable to switch around.

AnonymousIf he is two-handing a weapon and activates the cursed sword, he needs to go back to two-handing the same weapon when putting the cursed sword away

AnonymousI think From knows how strong parry theoretically is and have balanced this move accordingly. I don't think the movement needs fixed because you can switch-parry on the fly. I don't think the damage needs to be fixed because this thing costs borderline no stamina. It should have its role as the parry tool, while your main hand has its role as the damage/status tool.
HOWEVER, the biggest issue I have with Suncatcher is that there's no i-frames on L2. Is this not supposed to be our reward for parrying correctly?! And we can still trade and die against boss moves? Meanwhile Ironeye and Raider's skills have insane i-frames and don't require any work to "build" like this does. If it did more stance damage too (like guard counter amount) then I'd be a happy, happy Executor :)
AnonymousI think theres a few ways the lack of damage could be fixed without just giving it more base damage:
1. give it a significant crit bonus to incentivize using it for stance breaks
2. just increase the boosted skill damage. its kinda pitiful as is imo (also make it benefit from weapon skill bonuses. should be a thing already tbh)
3. give it more powerful guard counters, either a slight boost always or a bigger one only while boosted
4. make the boosted skill give damage reduction similarly to endure or raider's skill. as is, you're kinda taking a risk with it since, as opposed to a good roll, blocking attacks still leaves you in a potentially dangerous position relative to bosses, making it hard to get the skill off

AnonymousBig fan of deflecting heolstor's gigaexplosion attack with this

AnonymousWhere the hell did the name "Suncatcher" come from? It's called "Cursed Blade" in-game.

Anonymous
Anonymouswhen its charged it should take on the status effect of whatever is in your right hand

AnonymousDecrease parry frames, increase damage and add bleed, then it's a good weapon.

AnonymousI want this thing in Elden Ring as a DLC, the holy katana drip is something I missed.

AnonymousVery fun to use but falls off pretty badly in the later stages of the game, this thing needs bleed buildup and higher damage scaling for the later stages of the game.

Anonymousthe weapon should do more damage once youve charged it up with parries imo

AnonymousIf you had to pick one, would you guys rather Suncatcher have better movement (like Sekiro, you can run around) or better damage?
For me it's movement, because with how insanely mobile ER bosses are, it can be impossible to use this ability. Plus this sword doesn't have great damage, but instead just racks up poise while taking aggro; it would be balanced just fine while also giving Executor a distinct utility during boss fights. And of course deflecting takes execution too, and the risk-reward is balanced since if we miss we die.
Anonymousbtw you can deal a bunch of stance damage after a parry by doing a heavy attack immediately after landing a parry (its enough to insta stagger the mannequin training ai in roundtable hold)

AnonymousThis weapon doesn't count as a katana for relics holy moly. It also does worse damage than a blue katana at 15. The L2 charged also does worse damage than a normal weapons light chain. That's not even accounting for it dealing no form of status damage. This thing needs better scaling or base damage and the charge L2 should be reworked. It'd be nice if it got a holy element buff for attacks or replace the charged L2 with a judgement cut. Why is it so weak? It feels bugged honestly. The deflects are insanely strong, however, that shouldn't mean it deals awful damage considering it can't status.

Anonymousis the damage from the skill (weapon art when glowing) holy damage?

AnonymousHe Parry's when drawing/sheathing the cursed blade, as well as using its special skill, and can even power it up, but from my test it takes many parry's with the power it up via the skill.

AnonymousDo successful parries with this do stance damage to the enemy?

AnonymousThe skill sometimes just ends without my input, leading to very embarrassing deaths

Anonymous
Anonymous
AnonymousMore generous deflect timing than Sekiro? So just basically impossible to miss then? Sounds like despite the bum passive this might be a hell of a class.

Anonymous
AnonymousDoes the equipped weapon matter when using cursed blade or is in ONLY affected by character level? Does it inherit the elemental damage?

Anonymous
AnonymousIs The weapon buff works like euphoria weapon buff? ( Flat ar boost after a few hit)

Anonymous

Absolutely disgusting crit damage
Getting 30% off of a formidable boss' healthbar is surely something to look up to. Get the crit talisman if you're lucky, as well as using Adel's relic if you don't have anything more useful for your executor. Criting 80% of a night 's cavalry is surely OP
I really like perfect blocking the attacks of something enemies. Very satisfying
