Mystic Carrion is a powerful undead NPC and quest giver in Baldur's Gate 3. He is a level 12 Mummy Lord necromancer who resides in Philgrave's Mansion in the Lower City. Mystic Carrion has hidden his organs inside four Canopic Jars across the city. Destroying these jars is required to permanently defeat him.

 Mystic Carrion is also the objective of an altogether different side quest, Destroy Mystic Carrion, and also serves as a vendor/merchant with a selection of powerful items and alchemy reagents.

If you do NOT want to immediately aggro Mystic Carrion and his ghouls/ghasts it is highly recommended you enter the house through the secret stone slab entrance and enter the parlor room (X:-8, Y:-158).  Should you get caught meandering on any of the upper floors you will initiate combat.

There are a massive amount of NPCs in Baldur's Gate 3, and their ideals, needs and way of living are strictly related to the actions they perform during the course of the game. Their attitude towards you and your party may be affected by the deeds and decisions you and your party have taken on.

Where to find BG3 Mystic Carrion

Mystic Carrion can be found in Philgrave's Mansion, located in the Lower City of Baldur's Gate. His mansion is near the House of Healing area. Players will usually meet him while progressing the quest Find Mystic Carrion's Servant. He stays inside his mansion until the player brings his servant Thrumbo back or decides to confront him.

Act 3

  • Lower City
    • Philgrave's Mansion
      • The mansion itself is situated by the fishing docks where you fight the Sahuagin ambush.  The nearest waypoint is Heapside Strand.
      • The mansion itself has no external doors so to speak.  As such the only ways to enter are through a hole (X:-27, Y:-166) in the wall closest to the Gazebo near the docks where you'll find a male orc (Fyrd Nuuge) and female gnome (Beulla Sandfoot) discussing Nine-Fingers Keene; you must pass a passive Perception check to discover this hole and then use a spell like Enlarge/Reduce to squeeze through.  Upon entering you'll find yourself in the basement and must make your way upstairs.
      • A second entrance is located on the direct opposite side of the building (X:-8, Y:-158).  You'll know you're in the right area if you see a green dragonborn named Druid Klarrvox.  Past him there will be a set of descending stairs where eventually you'll naturally see the cutout of a door in the stone wall but your characters will still need to pass a passive Perception check to realize it's an actual entrance.  You must pass a DC 25 Sleight of Hand check to unlock the slab.
      • There is a third door on the balcony of the building, which would require you to find a means of accessing it via the rooftops in the area.

Mystic Carrion's Canopic Jars Locations

Mystic Carrion’s immortality is tied to four Canopic Jars containing his organs. Destroying these jars is the key to permanently defeating him.

Mystic Carrion Canopic Jars

Jar Location How to Access Notes
Brain Ancient Lair, near Undercity Ruins Lockpick the hidden door in the wall Fight with undead enemies
Liver Ancient Lair Inside a Gilded Chest Same area as the Brain jar
Lungs Mortuary Cellar, Graveyard Lockpick the door in the Mortuary Found on a table with plants
Heart Inside Thrumbo, his servant Talk to Thrumbo after finding him He will vomit the jar when confronted

How to Weaken and Defeat Mystic Carrion

The most effective way to defeat Mystic Carrion is to destroy his Canopic Jars before fighting him. Without his organs, he loses the ability to regenerate and becomes much weaker.

Recommended steps:

  • Locate and destroy the three jars found in the world (Brain, Liver, and Lungs).
  • Find Thrumbo and obtain the Heart jar from him.
  • Return to Philgrave's Mansion and destroy the final jar.
  • Confront Mystic Carrion once all jars are destroyed.

BG3 Mystic Carrion Notes and Tips

  • Has 7 Ancient Servants and Ulnar as allies.
  • Wizards with the Necromancy subclass receive a handful of unique dialogue options when interacting with Mystic Carrion, especially if they found and successfully used the legendary Necromancy of Thay book found in Ilyn Toth's secret lab in Act 1.  One of these conversation choices is to reduce the cost of his seance from 1500 gold to 1000 gold.
  • Conversing with Mystic Carrion can also reveal the location of the Tharciate Codex, which is located at the magical shop, Sorcerous Sundries.  This book is required to unlock the full potential of the Necromancy of Thay tome found in Act 1 (as long as you did not sell or destroy it).
  • Only the Heart jar is required to permanently kill Mystic Carrion, but destroying all four makes the fight much easier.
  • Thrumbo hides in a house near the beach in the Lower City.
  • If you return Thrumbo without destroying the other jars, Mystic Carrion remains very strong.
  • This fight is especially good for necromancy and undead-themed builds.
  • Mystic Carrion has many undead servants inside his mansion that will join the fight if provoked.

        Resistances almost completely wrong - or do they change after a certain quest part?
        Slashing, Piercing, Bludgeoning: Resistant;
        Necro, Poison: Immune;
        Fire: Vulnerable;

          Despise him killing some random no-ones, he is, ironically enough, are chilliest NPC in entire Act 3. Act most respectable towards MC, never angry, never tried double-cross you, not trying to kill everyone or conquer the word, just provides his services. He even agrees to take gold for the quest with the painter (which ****ed up) instead of MC doing chores. What a nice guy.

            Any idea if the 'help the hah survivors' quest overlaps with mystic carrion if you let what's her face take her husband to balders gate?

              I find some of the quest design in act 2 and 3 to be very oversight heavy. For example, of you touch one of the coffins before walking into the main room - combat starts immediately. This does not create any entries for the quest, even if you kill the quest giver himself. And it definitely should start the quest, considering you can't kill this NPC for good without finding another NPC.

                Stupid as the rest of the Act 3. If you kill that c*** necromancer that deserves it, you can not obtain the Weave hood, that is best for any wizzard... Dumbass game from act 3...
