BG3 True Soul Nere Boss Guide
True Soul Nere Boss Tips
True Soul Nere is trapped under the rubble once you reach the dig site at the Grymforge. If you interact with him, he will tell you to hurry in freeing him.
If you don't do as he says, and decide to take your time exploring the rest of the Grymforge, True Soul Nere will be dead by the time you return to the dig site. Going to camp with a full grouped party twice or taking a long rest twice will trigger his death. (Don't worry, you can still find all his loot even if you don't fight him)
To prevent him from dying is to don't interact with the rubble and explore the rest of the Location at your own pace.
This is a long fight, and Nere won't be fighting alone, there are many Duergar that join the fight. You can decide to side with Nere against Brithvar and his rebel forces, or you can instead decide to fight alongside Brithvar and face boh Nere and Sargeant Thrinn and her forces.

AnonymousPlaying as a paladin:
"I might let this guy live"
* Nere throws a poor helpless gnome at the lava pit
"Forget what I said. Die MF!"
AnonymousBrithvar becomes hostile if you loot Nere's body after siding with him, which makes no sense

AnonymousSucks Meerna is hardcoded to die even if you attack Nere as soon as you break them out.

AnonymousI can never tell if this game makes no sense or if it's just buggy as hell. I killed Nere, sided with Brithvar, freed the gnomes, but to loot Nere (which I need to do for lantern) I'm going to have to kill Brithvar, etc because they think I'm stealing. Why? I killed Nere and they let me loot the Sergeant fine.
Stupid game.
AnonymousWIsh we could recruit this guy as a companion if siding with Minthara at the grove

AnonymousAs soon as the dialogue with Nere starts you can steal from him. Very nice boots and more...

AnonymousIf you choose to side against Nere + all of the Duergar guards, what is to happen should look like this:
Combat starts with Astarion (always so, if he retains his default class and is present, unless your main char is a high DEX build).
Nere (full health = 101 on Tactician) can be killed at the beginning of the battle. He may or may not have a chance to even do something.
My side = my character, 3x companions, 2x familiars, 1x Duergar helper (full health=85), (possibly) 1x extra helper (full health=26).
Nere's side = Nere (health=101), Sergeant (Eldritch Knight), 2x Mind Masters, 1x Trader (Battle Master), 1x Ranger (no poison), 1x Ranger (uses poison).
The first-turn combat sequence #1 as I observed:
0) Combat starts with Astarion;
1) Astarion attacks Nere 3x times;
2) Duergar ranger (the only archer on high ground) casts Hunter's Mark and shoots 2x bolts at my Duergar helper;
3) Karlach attacks Nere 2x times (Nere is now near death);
4) Basket (another name for Shovel) breaks invisibility to finish off Nere;
If Nere had survived all those 6 attacks, my party's 2nd familiar (a Raven) could try to finish him off.
The first-turn combat sequence #2 as I observed:
0) Combat starts with Astarion;
1) Astarion attacks Nere 3x times;
2) Duergar ranger casts Hunter's Mark and shoots 2x bolts at my Duergar helper;
3) Nere heals himself with a potion and casts his unique spell to force Astarion to switch sides (Astarion is now hostile);
4) Karlach attacks Nere 2x times (Nere is now near death);
5) Basket (my familiar) breaks invisibility to finish off Nere;
If Nere had survived all the above 6 attacks, my party's 2nd familiar could try to finish him off.
I think for a player party of 4 of level 5+, this battle is not hard even on Tactician. The in-game descriptions of the mind-control effects of both Nere's spell and his Duergar friends' spell have instructions on how to break them, easy to understand, easy to follow. Note: Nere's death does not break his spell's effect.
AnonymousNere commanded me to kill the other Duergars, I thought sure he must be powerful enough to help me. In comes this mf doing an average of 6 dmg a turn. as 15 enemies slaughter us

AnonymousFor those who like Nere. Kill the duergars (Trinn and some more) before collapsing the rubble, persuade Nere to release the gnomes. Convince him to leave Absolute. He will give his lyre, and he won't be turned into a zombie.

AnonymousIn the latest patch, many fixes were made. Now, if you convince him, he won't go to Baltazar, won't turn into a zombie, and will stay alive

AnonymousSad that he gets the Mind Spike spell but no player characters have access to it.

AnonymousI climbed the ladder where the one guard is and killed all the druegar first. With the height advantage it's not too hard. I went to camp immediately and after I returned I noticed the gnomes had already blasted through the rubble and killed Nere. Every living thing in the area was gone too. Weird

AnonymousSPOILERS WARNING
my preferred order for this one:
1. tell Brithvar that you will help them against Nere + kill the orb as instructed
2. tell the gnomes that you will help them (i think they might go hostile otherwise later)
3. free Nere and tell him not to kill innocents - try to intimidate/mock him as much as you can. but then ally with him against Brithvar and his lackeys.
4. get a bit more information from talking to Nere and mock him some more. after he hands over the Gift from the Absolute, kill him.
this way you get 2 tadpole powers and the gnomes are free.
if you are careful with the vision cones (and/or witness condition) you can also kill some of the absolutists in the first fight to make it even easier especially in the tail end of the fight when the masons take their time arriving.
AnonymousJust kill the druegar first. Sure, it's not easy, esp. since they have some wild 'mind control' type spells you won't have encountered before. And they can even shoot arrows that push your characters into the lava. And they will cast enlarge on themselves. But you kill the druegar first, and Nere is an absolutely easy clap on his own.
The toughest for me was they mind controlled Shadowheart (first turn!) and so she decided to shoot an arrow of darkness, and they ensnared Gael. So I couldn't get him out of the darkness, couldn't move him to use any of his heavy hitting spells. Then they killed him. Those bastards. Whittled em down one by one, brought Gael back, and although I would have preferred a big fireball at the start of the fight, some Magic Missiles at the end was a decent way for him to chip in.
AnonymousFor some nonsensical reason. Karlach "disaproves" with you if you side with the dwarves against Nere.

AnonymousI thought this on tactician without help from brithvar and after 3 fights without taking a long rest. It was insanely hard and my character died twice. And now I learn I could recruit rebels omg

AnonymousTbh his cutscene is a perfect example of this game lacking proper neutral dialogue choices sometimes. You either say something like “Please, don’t kill innocents”, which is too sweet, or you let him kill gnomes, bc any other choice makes him do so, and you cannot interrupt him. Man, I’m playing as a duergar character, so why should I act like a saint? Why can’t I stop him in more neutral manner like insulting him, or at least side with that duergar elder and attack immediately just like Arabella scenario? I don’t want to attack him outside of the dialogue, bc it aggroes everyone in Grimforge. Well, bye bye gnomes I guess.

AnonymousSPOILER
Was able to get to him without clearing the rubble. Jumped across after killing the boss and crafting my armor. He was already dead. I didn't rest at all.
AnonymousI first fought the Duergar, cause the myconids asked me to. Then i got rid of the rubble and fought Nere....both fights are pretty tough

AnonymousThis man coerced my MC for 3 turns, who then proceeded to rock my party and almost TPK

AnonymousI cant get into wyrms crossing without getting arrested or fighting. the steel watch senses blood being spilled in the gyrmforge and calls me an enemy of the absolute. I assume this has to do with killing Nere, but i can't find any information online. does anyone know exactly what this means?

AnonymousI assume this is The Nere, (you never know), but in my playthrough, after letting Nere live, I later found a Zombie called Nere under control of Balthazar. You cannot get the head from it tho.

AnonymousI went on to look for the explosives, when i came back he was already dead and the place was empty lol

AnonymousI let him kill the slaves, then start the fight with him as an ally. When the duergars are dwindling, I start attacking Nere. He does not fight back since we are "allied". Everybody dies besides me :)

AnonymousSo weird, with the ring you get from the illith scholar, you have the dialog where Nere cannot communicate with the absolute anymore, and you are presented with few dialog check to convince Nere stop being cultist. The funny part is that Nere will reward you changing his fate with.... a +1 dagger... so ridiculous.

AnonymousKilled him and the dwarves, just because I'm a selunite drow, trying to be good. Fun fight!

Anonymouscan confirm camp-going screw the 'timer' to save him from the poison, i never went to a long rest since going to Grymforgeand just mixed my roster and came back to the opened chruch and his corpse, the duergars and svirfneblins nowehere to be seen, pretty annoying to make the quest screws itself just for camp going without long rest.

AnonymousIt's not a question of whether I let him live, but whether I want his items badly enough to avoid shoving him into the lava river.

Anonymousi killed him (along with everything else on the floor) the moment he walks out after being freed... by throwing the entire barrel of rune powder at him from the safety of the balcony nearby. poor gnome collaterals BUT THE *BOOM* WAS WORTH IT!!!

Anonymous
AnonymousYou can save gnomes and not kill him if you first kill the dwarves, then mind read him and then pass will check.

Anonymousif you let him die you still get everything he has. It seems that if you do rescue him and try to save the gnomes , any choice you do leads to him attacking you and getting the dark dwarves angry at you. If you let him die the dark dwarves stay non hostile.

I just want to point out to future readers. The limitations of Long Rest and Waypoint usage only starts after talking to "Cave-In"
I read comments and though it was triggered by the rocks behind the Roth animals. This is not the case. Don't suffer like I did. Long rest and use waypoints before talking to "Cave-In" and you're fine.
