Johl is an NPC and potential Enemy in Baldur's Gate 3. Johl can be found at the entrance of Sunlit Wetlands. He is alongside Demir, his brother, arguing with Auntie Ethel. There is a massive amount of NPCs in Baldur's Gate 3, and their ideals, needs and way of living are strictly related to the actions they perform during the course of the game. Their attitude towards you and your party may be affected by the deeds and decisions you and your party taken on.

Johl Dialogue Options in Baldur's Gate 3
Johl can be found alongisde Demir, his brother, arguing with Auntie Ethel at the entrance of the Sunlit Wetlands. They are acussing Ethel of the disappearance of their sister, Mayrina. Depending on how the conversation goes, they can be killed instantly by Auntie Ethel, or when she disappears, they enter the Sunlit Wetlands, to meet the same fate, probably at the hands of the Redcaps.
If you are a Sorcerer or a Ranger, there are two options. There is an option to tell them to walk away from this situation and leave. However, they don't seem to do it, and if you confront Auntie Ethel about it, she states that they are Sussar Farm, near Baldur's Gate. The other option is to let you a more experienced adventurer take on the Hag, but Johl in his anger, states that he doesn't even know you and both take off only to be found dead near Ethel's house. If you side with Auntie Ethel, both Demir and Johl will turn hostile, and die by your hand.
The dialogue will break down like this:
- How about you all just calm down. What's going on here?
- Lower your weapon, I know this lady.
- This is nothing to do with me. Goodbye.
Auntie Ethel will soon disappear and you will be left with Johl and Demir who ponder about what to do next and how to find their sister.
- Let me - I'll bring Mayrina home.
- you're on your own. I have enough problems.
- I'm sorry. I wish you luck in finding her.
If you volunteer to help them by picking the first dialogue option both Lae'zel and Shadowheart will disapprove, and they will still decline your help. This will still progress through the quest: Save Mayrina.

What happend if you reach Ethel house from the underground mushroom portal, and kill her before talking to the brothers??

If you fight them and use nonlethal attacks, they do not die, and your own dialogue changes when confronting the Hag.
Mayrina still freaks out if you tell her about the conflict, freaking out saying everyone is dead (Even tho they aren't, not sure if its the same dialogue if you kill them tbh, but your response is) - overall the initial confrontation with Ethel doesn't play much different.
Compared to letting the brothers die (But not killing them); Mayrina wasn't as grateful for the rescue initially and needed a persuasion check to convince her of the Hags true intentions.
Note: I killed the Hag before she entered her lair.
If you leave them knocked out, and take a long rest before confronting the Hag, the dialogue goes back to a state where they are presumably dead/missing - and you can ask where the brothers are.
If they are knocked out and you finish the Hag off - They remain knocked out, but do not reappear in ACT 1 - Whether you take a Long Rest or not. (Which is a bit of a shame, I'd have liked for them to show up to comfort Mayrina when she is mourning her husband)
I am as of this time unaware if they reappear in a later Act or scene.

What about non-lethal damage when they attack you when you first find them confronting the hag?
If you are a Ranger and choose the option "[Ranger] Hags are unnatural and dangerous...", the next choice is:
1. Walk away. Live.
2. Trust a more experienced soul. I'll find your sister.
If you choose option 2, Johl acts as though you weren't a Ranger and offered help. The brothers take off downhill and you find their bodies near the Hag's hut. If you choose option 1, Johl says "Knew it. You're full of it." , then Demir says "Thanks for the... erm, advice, but we'll find our sister on our own." (or similar).
I'm not sure if Larian is changing this quest to make the brothers impossible to save or what, but it's encouraging that you don't automatically find their bodies at the crossroads near the Hag's hut. I'll come back and reply to this comment at the end of this playthrough to determine if I find their bodies or otherwise learn of their deaths.
