Halsin is an NPC and Potential Companion in Baldur's Gate 3 (BG3). Halsin can be found as a prisoner at the Worg Pens, deep within the Shattered Sanctum. Halsin is the first Druid of the Druid Grove and an accomplished healer, but has been missing since he left with Aradin's expedition.

There is a massive amount of NPCs in Baldur's Gate 3, and their ideals, needs and way of living are strictly related to the actions they perform during the course of the game. Their attitude towards you and your party may be affected by the deeds and decisions you and your party taken on.

You truly are a feast for my eyes - nature outdid itself with you. Did you wish to speak?"

Where to find Halsin in BG3

Halsin can first be met in the Worg Pens at the Shattered Sanctum , Goblin Camp. (Lv 5 Druid)

To recruit him, you must complete the druid's grove/Save the refugees questline. In which you need to defeat the three leaders of the Goblin Camp.

However, Halsin won't be available as a playable companion until players have rescued Thaniel and Oliver inside the shadow-cursed lands in Act 2. Once that issue has been resolved, players will be able to ask Halsin to join them permanently.

Halsin BG3 Quest Walkthrough

You learn about Halsin for the first time at the Druid Grove. He has gone with Aradin's expedition to the Goblin Camp, but he never managed to return because he was captured. He can be found at the Worg Pens.

If you free him, he offers to join you during the raid of the goblin camp. If you accept, he will fight at your side, but every NPC that crosses your path will automatically be hostile.

If you raze the Goblin Camp and kill the three goblin leaders (True Soul GutDror Ragzlin and Minthara) before talking to him at the Worg pens, you will find Halsin has left his cage and has returned to the Druid Grove by himself. After introducing himself, he thanks you for your actions and immediately senses you have a problem that he can help you with.

After the events at the Shattered SanctumHalsin will then return to the Druid Grove. If you have exposed Kagha, he will be having a word with her. Once the Tiefling party is over, he will tell you about Moonrise Towers.

How to Romance Halsin in BG3

In this Halsin Romance Guide, we explore the general path toward gaining Halsin's approval and what opportunities you have to share some moments with him. This will be updated as more is revealed throughout the game.

Halsin becomes available for romance when a certain point of approval has been reached. Halsin is different compared to other companions as he cannot be recruited as a party member until Act II, though you are able to flirt with him after you first meet him in Act I during the Quest Save the Refugees or Find the Druid. This means his romance progresses straight from companion to "partnered" in Act III, and skips the "dating" status that players may have with up to three companions in Act I.

BG3 Halsin Romance Guide Act I

As mentioned above, Halsin can be first met at the Goblin Camp, having been captured by goblins during Aradin's expedition. If you want to recruit and romance Halsin, you will have to defeat the three goblin leaders (True Soul Gut, Dror Ragzlin  and Minthara)  and the goblins in the camp. If you free Halsin before defeating the goblin leaders, he can optionally aid in raiding the camp, at which point all the goblins in the camp will be hostile. If you defeat the goblin leaders before freeing him, he returns to the Druid Grove before you reach the Worg pens and can then be first met there.

After clearing the events in the Shattered Sanctum, Halsin returns to the Druid Grove and may confront Kagha. If you want to recruit and romance Halsin, you'll need to save both the Druids and the Tieflings in the grove. Afterwards, Halsin will offer his help as he has information about the Moonrise Towers. While he travels with you in your camp from this point on, Halsin will not yet join your ranks as a Companion and cannot venture out in your party. Options to flirt with him still arise and you may even attempt to spend time with him on the night of celebrations after you finish the aforementioned Quests. He will turn you down, but not straight up reject you.

BG3 Halsin Romance Guide Act II

As you go through Act II, you'll eventually make it to the Last Light Inn. Certain situations may trigger the devastation of the inn, especially if you chose to play as The Dark Urge, so make sure to choose the options that will preserve everything and everyone  as much as possible. If the inn remains intact, you will encounter a bandaged man on a bed within called the "sleeping man", attended to by a Flaming Fist. Interacting with the man prompts a Quest from Halsin to find Thaniel, a child Halsin knows as nature itself. This Quest will eventually entail protecting Halsin by safeguarding a portal he ventured through to retrieve Thaniel from the Shadowfell. This can be a difficult fight, as you'll have to keep him alive against waves of enemies for several turns until he finishes his task (though some players have reported quick success by placing a cleric  near the portal and casting the spell Spirit Guardians). Successfully clearing the quest will allow you to officially recruit Halsin as a Companion, and thus make him available for romance. Make sure to keep clearing out any other Quests surrounding Halsin as you build approval with him.

BG3 Halsin Romance Guide Act III

When you get your approval with Halsin enough as an official Companion, an exclamation point will appear over his head while at camp, with dialogue potentially leading to his intimate scene. Follow the conversation with affirming dialogue options until he mentions having many previous lovers. Ask him what exactly he means by this to get his direct confession. If you were holding out all this time for Halsin, you'll simply need to assure him that you reciprocate his feelings. Otherwise, you'll have to be honest about it and say that you're interested but you're already with somebody else. Halsin will explain that he does not mind sharing you, as he sees romance and partnership as a fluid system like nature, but he will require the consent of your existing partner for anything to happen between you.

As a good partner who respects their lover, you'll have to go and have a talk with your current partner and see how they feel about polyamory. Astarion, Karlach, and Shadowheart have been confirmed as consenting to the polyamory. Naturally, if your partner does mind or if you want to, you can choose to break it off with them and exclusively be with Halsin.

Afterwards, head back promptly to Halsin and let him know, then take a long rest to initiate the famous love scene. When he loses control and turns into a bear then back again, you'll have the option to choose whether or not you'd like him to continue the deed as a bear ("1. Don't apologise. I like it.") or in human form ("2. I'm flattered I have that effect on you. Now come here."). No one will judge you, as long as you both are happy.

Baldur's Gate 3 Best Halsin Guides

Best Halsin Druid Sub-Classes

Circle of the Moon

The Circle of the Moon sub-class is already Halsin's default subclass. Its multiple subclass features help Halsin become a valuable member of the party. At level 2, he gains Lunar Mend, which allows him to spend a spell slot to recover hit points by expending a spell slot at 1d8 hit points per spell slot level while he's in Wild Shape. Also at level two, he gets Combat Wild Shape and Wild Shape: Bear. Combat Wild Shape allows Halsin to use his Wild Shape to transform into an animal form using a Bonus Action instead of a regular action. This allows Halsin to use his action to make an attack against enemies during combat. The subclass also gives even more animal Wild Shape options at higher levels. At level 4, he gets Wild Shape: Dire Raven, allowing him to transform into a Dire Raven that can Blind enemies. At level 8, he gets Wild Shape: Sabre-Toothed Tiger, and Wild Shape: Myrmidon at level 10.

At level 6, he unlocks Primal Strike, making his attacks count as magical to overcome Resistance and Immunity to non-magical damage. This gives players an incentive to use Halsin's Wild Shape forms as much as possible to counter enemies' Resistances. A good strategy to using Halsin is to set up concentration spells at the start of combat, then use his Bonus Action to transform into one of his many animal forms using Combat Wild Shape. He can then stay in his Wild Shape form to attack enemies while using his bonus action for other things.

To make sure that Halsin can be the best Mood Druid he can be, it's recommended for players to respec Halsin after they meet Withers so they can redistribute his Ability Scores. As a Druid, his main stat that players need to prioritize is Wisdom to boost his spellcasting. Next on the list is Constitution to raise his durability, Hit Point Pool, and his chances of succeeding on Concentration Checks. The last ability that players need to think about is Dexterity. While his AC will change depending on the beast form he takes on while in Wild Shape, it's still important to put some points into his Dexterity to raise his Initiative roll and Armour Class while he is out of Wild Shape.

Best Equipment for Halsin in Baldur's Gate 3

Armor

hood of the weave helmet armor bg3 wiki guide 150pxHood of the Weave

The Hood of the Weave is a great helmet to equip on Halsin to give him a +2 bonus to his Spell Save DCs and Spell Attack Rolls while not in Wild Shape. Since equipment is absorbed and "merged" with the wearer when they transform using Wild Shape and has no effect, the boost is solely for Halsin while he is not shape-shifted.

The Armour of Moonbasking is a very rare armour that can be very helpful to Halsin as a Moon Druid for its effects. It has Lunar Bestial Vitality, which grants its wearer with 22 temporary Hit Points after casting Wild Shape. Additionally, while he has those temporary hit points, all incoming damage are reduced by 1. Another effect the armour has is Lunar Bestial Fortitude, which grants a +2 bonus to his AC, and it gives Advantage on Saving Throws against spells. This effect is active while the wearer is in Wild Shape, which is specific to this piece of equipment as it is designed for druids. The Armour of Moonbasking can be bought from Voiceless Penitent Bareki in the Lower City Sewers.

helldusk boots baldurs gate 3 wiki guide 150pxHelldusk Boots

The Helldusk Boots are a pair of very rare boots that can be looted from a locked gilded chest in the upper levels of Wyrm's Rock Fortress in Gortash's personal collection. The boots have the Steadfast enchantment, which allows its wearer to ignore Difficult Terrain, as well as make it so they cannot be forcibly moved by enemy spells or actions. The boots also grant the wearer Infernal Evasion, giving them the ability to use their Reaction to succeed a Saving Throw they initially failed.

cloak of the weave armor bg3 wiki guide 150pxCloak of the Weave

The Cloak of the Weave is a very rare piece of clothing that can be equipped on Halsin. It grants him a +1 bonus to his Spell Save DC and his Spell Attack Rolls, buffing his spellcasting to make sure his spells hit and are harder to ignore. The robe also has Absorb Elements, which allows its wearer to absorb elemental damage once per short rest. When Halsin activates this effect, he takes half damage from the next elemental attack targeting him, and then he deals an additional 1d6 of that element type on his next attack. The cloak can be bought from Helsik at the Devil's Fee after asking her about her past dealings with Gortash.

amulet of greater health amulets bg3 wiki guide 150pxAmulet of Greater Health

The Amulet of Greater Health is an amulet that can be great to equip on Halsin to boost his Constitution Score to 23. This will give him a bigger Hit Point Pool outside of Wild Shape. The amulet also gives him Advantage on Constitution Saving Throws, which helps with keeping his Concentration spells active when he casts them. The Amulet of Greater Health can be found in the House of Hope

shapeshifters boon ring rings bg3 wikiguide 150pxShapeshifter's Boon Ring

The Shapeshifter's Boon Ring is an uncommon ring that can be equipped to Halsin. Its effect grants a +1d4 bonus to all Checks while the wearer is shapeshifted or disguised. This effect is designed to work while Halsin is Wild Shaped, much like the Armour of Moonbasking. The ring is located in the Druid Grove next to Toron and the strange Ox. If players missed the opportunity to get it then, they can also meet him in the Last Light Inn in Act 2 and Rivington in Act 3.

ring of metal inhibition rings bg3 wikiguide 150pxRing of Mental Inhibition

The Ring of Mental Inhibition is an uncommon ring that can be equipped to Halsin as it utilizes his spellcasting to inflict debuffs against enemies. Its effect, Mental Inhibition, inflicts enemies who fail a saving throw against one of the caster's spells or actions with Mental Fatigue for two turns. Mental Fatigue gives a -1 penalty to Wisdom, Intelligence, and Charisma Saving Throws for every turn remaining. This allows Halsin to debuff the party's enemies with spells or actions and make them even more vulnerable to failing future saves from him or other party members. The ring can be found inside a locked chest east of the Shadowed Battlefield Waypoint in the House in Deep Shadows

Weapons

markoheshkir baldurs gate 3 wiki guide 150pxMarkoheshkir

The Markoheshkir is a legendary quarterstaff that is a great piece of equipment to equip on Halsin. The staff has Arcane Enchantment which gives a +1 bonus to the wielder's Spell Save DC and Spell Attack Rolls. A great buff for Halsin when he isn't in Wild Shape to make his spells harder to evade. It also has Arcane Battery, which gives the wielder the ability to cast a spell of any level once per Long Rest. The staff also has Kereska's Favour, which allows the wielder to imbue themselves with elemental energy. The Markohehskir can be found inside an arcane shield that players will need to disable inside Ramazith's Tower.

Best Feats for Halsin in Baldur's Gate 3

Early on in the game, it's recommended to choose the Ability Score Improvement option and raise Halsin's Wisdom up to 20 whenever he reaches a level that allows him to take a feat. After his Wisdom Score is maxed out, you can choose the War Caster Feat to give Halsin Advantage on Concentration Saving Throws, this will help with keeping his spells active during combat without having to worry about expending more spell slots to recast them if he gets hit with an attack. While not Wild Shaped, Halsin also gains the ability to use his Reaction to cast Shocking Grasp against enemies moving out of melee range from him.

Halsin Endings Guide in Baldur's Gate 3

Fail to Help Halsin Break the Shadow Curse

Ending Requirements and Conditions:

  • Fail to protect the portal Halsin has opened to the Shadowfell
  • Fail to complete the Lift the Shadow Curse quest

How to Obtain Ending:

  • Let the enemies destroy the portal.

ENDING DESCRIPTION - (Halsin Leaves your Party Permanently)

After waking Art Cullagh in the Last Light Inn by bringing him the Battered Lute, Art Cullagh will ask to see Halsin to give him information about the Shadowfell. After Halsin receives the information, he will ask the party to accompany him to the north of Last Light Inn by the lake. You will be given the following choices once you interact with him:

  1. First, I want to know what to expect.
  2. Let's do it.
  3. You can begin. I already did my part.

By choosing the second option, he will explain that once he starts the ritual to open a portal to the Shadowfell to save Thaniel, he cannot be accompanied by anyone.

  1. Hold on - shouldn't I come with you?
  2. What am I to do?
  3. Sounds like you don't need my help anymore.

If you choose the third option, Halsin will tell you that you are to be the beacon to guide him back out of the Shadowfell and that you need to stay outside to keep the portal open and defend it at all costs until he returns.

  1. You can count on me.
  2. Going in alone is suicide. I'll come with you.
  3. Defend it? What do you mean?

Choosing the first option will placate Halsin. He will tell you that the magic is very fragile and that it is important that only he passes through the portal, as it may be your only chance to do something.

Results and Consequences of Failing to Protect the Portal

After the portal is opened, waves of enemies will start to appear who will prioritize damaging the portal. If the party fails to protect the portal and it is destroyed, then Halsin will be lost to the Shadowfell and he will be unable to return to the party.

Help Halsin Break the Shadow Curse

Ending Requirements and Conditions:

  • Lift the Shadow Curse from the lands

How to Obtain Ending:

ENDING DESCRIPTION

If the player manages to help lift the Shadow Curse by completing the Lift the Shadow Curse quest and was not abducted by ORin, then he will return to Reithwin Town after the final battle with the Netherbrain to help the formerly cursed lands heal with the help of Thaniel. He will also rebuild Moonrise Towers into an orphanage and adopt the children who were orphaned in the wake of the Shadow Curse and The Absolute.

At the reunion during the Epilogue, he will say that the past few months have felt a little empty without your company, even though someone like him should have been used to the passage of time.

  1. Let me guess - 'just as nature intended'?.
  2. The feeling's mututal. I've missed you.
  3. Honestly, time's flown by.
  4. You sound almost sentimental, considering we didn't really get along.

Choosing the second option, he will say that everyone has longed for each other's company and that he cannot imagine otherwise, considering all that you have experienced together, a certain bond that was made from something that should never happen again, and yet it's a bond that withstands time and distance.

  1. You sound like you need a hug.
  2. You sound like you need a drink.
  3. That's life, I'm afraid. We can't go back.
  4. The future's ours to write. Who knows what we might yet share together.

Choosing the first option, he will say that he always welcomes a hug, and that should he ever refuse, assume a doppelganger has taken his place before he and the player share an embrace. After the player pulls away, Halsin will say that it was more than worth the wait he has endured.

  1. Let's not shortchange ourselves, Halsin. How about a kiss?
  2. You can say that again.
  3. I'm sure there'll be more where that came from.
  4. Oof, that's quite a squeeze you put on me, Halsin.

Choosing the first option will have the player and Halsin share a short but passionate kiss between the two of them before he says that that was what he was truly missing. He will then say that he has much to catch up on and is eager to hear all about what you have been doing.

  1. You first, Halsin. I want to hear about the life you've made. The people you've helped.
  2. I could listen to you talk all day, but if you insist.
  3. Finally. Yes. Let's talk about me.
  4. I don't want to talk about it.

If you choose the first option, Halsin will tell you about how he has continued to grow the community and help the formerly-cursed, shadowy wasteland into a proper home for people, and that he thinks in a few months, it might even be possible to erase all traces of its past, even to those who have experienced it. He will tell you that the old masonry of the Moonrise Towers and Reithwin have been repurposed into homes and that the land has been filled with bountiful trees and rich with harvest.

  1. Sounds wonderful.
  2. Is this the balance you wished for?
  3. There must be a downside.
  4. I recall you have quite a few young wards to care for - nine wagons of them, wasn't it?

By choosing the fourth option, Halsin will tell you that the children have become his greatest purpose and reward. He will tell you about the resilience of the children, considering all that they have been through. He will tell you that he teaches them what he can, but that they teach him more than he does them.

  1. I'll need to see this place for myself.
  2. I'm glad you're happy.
  3. My turn, I suppose?

By choosing option one, Halsin will welcome you with open arms and tell you that you are welcome to stop by whenever you like and for however long you wish to stay. He will then ask you of what you have been up to, and his reason for asking is to have bedtime stories to tell them as they have quite the appetite for stories.

  1. Had I known bedtime tales were a possibility, I'd have sought you out at camp.
  2. I expect you'll have a few tales that will need to wait until they are older?
  3. All right, let me see what I have...
  4. Leave.

Choosing option three and you can choose the following options on how to tell Halsin about your recent exploits before the gathering.

  1. Regale Halsin with tales of your past six months.
  2. [Deception] The truth may be a little falt. Spice it up a little.
  3. Tell Halsin a detective story, where in the end, the intrepid Fist discovers they had been committing the murders all along.
  4. Recount some of your recent exploits, sparing no detail.

With the first option, he will be delighted with your stories and tell you that he will be able to entertain the children for quite a while thanks to you, and that if you wish to tell the children the stories yourself, you are more than welcome to do it, so that he can get a night off. After you exhaust all dialogue options, he will call for your attention before you leave and tell you that he has something for you, reminding you of his interest in whittling. Halsin will then give you a whittled duck, telling you that they are his favourite.

  1. It's lovely, thank you.
  2. Does it do anything?
  3. You're a sentimental creature at heart, you know that?
  4. This may fetch a modest price from a merchant with poor taste.

By choosing option one, Halsin will tell you that it is merely a token to remember him by before he lets you go so you can speak with the other companions in camp.

I just entered the lower city with him and for some reason he just dissapeared out of my party and camp and left a backpack, can someone explain?

      • Anonymous

Head your own advice and suit yourself are both flagged as romance options at the party that you have to explain away the next morning. So just speaking to him there sets his flag, and they said Gale was bad

        • Anonymous

For those who in honor mode aggroed him in bearshape via dialog - kill all goblins and just leave the room while forcing him in place with command or such

          • Anonymous

If you recruit him, he has 5 spells that you can cast not limited to short/long rest, but they take the appropriate spell slots:
            - Healing word
            - Thunderwave
            - Misty Step
            - Call lightning
            - Wild shape: cave bear (shapeshift, 36hp scales every 2 levels, multiattack, uses bonus action and wildshape charge)
You'll have them and not be able to use them if you are, say, a full thief rogue - but you can do things like have healing word on your EK, or call lightning on your Light cleric, and can still have a bonus action shapeshift as land/spore druid if you find yourself needing the HP buffer after spending your action.
Not having a tadpole, he is not able to learn any illithid powers.

If you're playing with a friend then the approval just goes to whoever is closest at the end of the fight with the kid. I was trying to romance him, but my brother got +50 approval just because he was closest to the kid at the end and went into the dialog first.

There's another path you can take. First tell Minthara the location of the grove, long rest, then break Halsin out, make sure the goblin kids don't escape and then when you talk to him he'll say the goblin horde is already marching and tasks you to return to the grove and aid them.

                • Anonymous

Not sure what's going on but after recruiting him in Act 2 stuff seems to disappear from his inventory when you fast travel or go to and from camp. So far it was just some dyes but may be worth keeping an eye on in case you give him valuables. I've also noticed that if he's your lead the dialogue with merchants is wonky, sometimes dialogue options for skill checks you've already passed will show up again, and other times it will randomly close the menu while you're trying to buy/sell

I had a weird glitch where I went into the mountain pass (a differet region) before long resting for the tiefling party and Halsin didn't appear in my camp. He did have the same dialogue as if he was in my camp though so I did the I could solve that by going to the house of healing and getting art's lute from the doctor to have Halsin join art in last light in.

He broke out of his cell by hinself after only killing priestess gut..and then ambushing the goblin raid and killing minthara..he showed up right after the battle..

Thanks in advance to those who will/will be able to answer me. I'm stuck with 2 bailouts before entering the nocturnal singing pools. In the first I didn't go to the lunar towers, while in the second I saved the Teflings and the gnome from the prisons of the aforementioned towers. Every time I try to enter the pool and the video ends with the attached dialogue with Balthazar, new missions are unlocked but Halsin's mission closes with the message: "you have decided to continue without Halsin being able to try to help you". Now, could you tell me what I forgot to do since I've done everything there was to do with Halsin and with the request, both from him and Thaniel, to kill Ketheric.

                        • Anonymous

Halsin can die in his prison cell, im unsure what exactly triggers his death flag, the only mayor thing I did different this playthrough is that i entered the goblin camp early for the merchants and i went to the mountain pass before saving him to make good use of the owlbear egg.
After reloading before changing areas he was still alive therefore i assume leaving for the mountain pass triggers the deathflag in his cell, not sure if visiting the goblin camp is required.

This dude is infuriatingly horny. Tries to **** my male character constantly even though I have told him to **** off at least 4 times now.

I think he has tried to have sex my male MC at least 4 times by now even though I have told him off every time. I guess having his ass sit in the camp makes him horny or something, but the next time he tries he will get free flying lessons off the wall.

His stats get reset to the Druid default after he joins so if you want him to be more lore accurate respec to 14/10/14/10/16/12. Best you can do since at camp before he joins you they are 16/11/14/10/17/13. If you want to really commit then you could raise his STR to 16 at level 4. It's not a "good" build but it fits what he is supposed to be. Otherwise to go full Wis at 4 and 8.

While talking about yourself to Halsinyou can say that you have a deep fear of krakens

I wonder if this is a DOS2 reference

(act 3 spoiler) fun fact: if you have a foursome with those twins at the whorehouse in Baldur's Gate, he'll reveal that he was kept as a sex slave by drow and apparently enjoyed it too lol (seriously, this guy is written like a shitty Skyrim waifu companion mod)

                                    • Playing with Halsin in my party, gonna try to enter in approvals up/down as I come across them. If you're looking for inspiration for him, as he's an Outlander he'll get inspired by the same things as Karlach - bar of course that he can only join your party a while into Act 2, so if you're inspo hunting you will probably need to cross-reference a bit.

This is by no means an extensive list, just the ones I've come across and how, starting from late act 2.

                                      Anyway.

                                      Shadowcursed lands
                                      - When speaking to Oliver, tell him you know who he is and that he needs to go back to Thaniel.
                                      - With the Nightsong, tell Balthazar he's not taking her to Ketheric
                                      - Agree to free the Nightsong
                                      - Persuade Ketheric to surrender, specifically when you tell him 'I can help you, Ketheric - if you let me'
                                      - After said persuasion: When you tell Nightsong Ketheric has surrendered

                                      Mind flayer colony
                                      - Releasing the people and flayers from the pods

                                      After that whole debacle
                                      - Talking to Thaniel, tell him "I'm glad I could help"

Those were the ones I found in Act 2. Sure there are heaps more, though. I'll keep going as I play on. Would love if more people add their ups/downs (of which I've had none, at least that I've seen so far) in replies as they come across them, so we can get a good wiki list going for the brave souls editing these pages :)

Based on these and my lack of disapprovals, I'd say just being a nice guy trying to help out seems to be a good way there. Wyll isn't in my party, but I think they may be pretty aligned; Astarion has had multiple disapprovals, too, so I think Halsin is just. Good-aligned in general.

He died in the goblin camp fight - he got forced blown into a chasm - I cannot resurrect him - will it hurt my later stories?

After that, however, nothing happens and the diary is blocked saying that I have to get the reward from Zevlor and wait until the morning after the party to talk to Halsin about what to do. What do you think I should do? restart the game or can i continue? help

He needs more romance content--compared to the others his romance is seriously lacking. Not surprising given his romance's late addition to the game, but still.

Bear daddy had consumed all my thoughts. Astarion, who? That 94 stat total has me wild, and READY. My knees are weak at the very thought.

Finished the missions with goblins and saved the Grove. Now Halsin has joined my camp but I still can’t find a line of dialogue to make him enter in my party. Might be a gate at lvl 5 (I am lvl 4). I don’t know.

i was left the room where he was supposed to be found cuz i had no hp and ran away. came back like 1 camp later and the dialogue said it died, the mission says his research may be of use now that he's gone but the research aint doing anything
