The Night is the main antagonistic force in Elden Ring Nightreign. Enshrouding the land in a dark haze, the Nightfarers continuously battle against the forces of the Night, as various creatures are pulled from its depths.

The Night Lore
In the game's opening cutscene, it is said that the Lands Between were visited by a great war. The Shattering, as it was known, destroyed order itself. And it was from this devastation that the Night arose, heralded by a single abomination. The country lay in ruin. The man who once was knight had challenged the hero, but he too was no match. He fell, just another body in a great pile. But eventually he awoke, crawling out from underneath the others. Though he had failed to protect anything or anyone, he yet lived. And so he cursed the world. It was the dead of night, and from the sky poured down a great rain. Heolstor, the Primordial Nightlord, was this nameless knight. Rather than the end of the Shattering leading to grace being extended to the Tarnished, calling them back to the Lands Between, in this timeline the Night instead plunged the land into a corroding darkness. Now through the Night's Tide, heavy rains harry the region, threatening to wash away its very history. The reach of the Night is limitless; its potential, immeasurable. Its touch indiscriminate, affecting any and all things. Whether one fears the Night, or welcomes it, depends upon the manner of contact. A Nightlord possesses the power to alter fate itself, the dark substance of the Night enhancing them beyond their natural capabilities. However, this power originates from a greater being that lies beyond the Nightlord. The clash with Night has spanned eons. And yet now, precious little time remains.
Like Heolstor, the other Nightlords came into contact with the Night and fight on its behalf. As a wolf pup, Gladius, born with its three heads, was feared by its peers and driven out of the pack, but its will to live was strong indeed. Upon a rainswept night, it seized a man's sword with its great jaws, but he showed no fear. He did not seek to harm the wolf, but instead took it in his arms. It has remained at his side ever since, always carrying that very sword. For the first time in its existence, the drifting ancient being Maris realized its interest had been piqued. Indeed, it had been roused from its aimless life of floating, camouflaged within its surroundings. The strange taste of this night was all too lonely, and more vast than it could ever know. The dragon Adel was nothing less than a wonder of the natural world. Majestic in size and bearing, it was the apex predator of the old island upon which it roosted. But when the sky began to weep in hues of azure, all was lost. There was nothing left to feed upon, leaving only hunger, which grew into madness. A ravening unending. The secluded forest was being eaten away by the surrounding desert, and when the blessing of water passed over its many leaves and boughs, thus began a great exodus of its creatures. To survive, the insects such as Gnoster would have to adapt. So began their prolonged and perilous journey. The left arm of the loyal and brave servant of the gods Fulghor had been severed from behind. As he turned back to look, he fell to despair. It seemed his companions, who had walked with him upon the same perilous path, had now forsworn the very gods they once served. From the phantasmal peak upon which she hid herself, Caligo peered down into the world, committing to memory what she perceived. Then, her eye drawn to a certain cataclysm, from out of hiding she leapt with wings unfurled. For she wished to know and to understand, first hand, just what fortunes and misfortunes the disaster would bring upon the world. The demon Libra was obsessed with the concepts of impartiality, fairness, and equanimity. For anything to reach a higher plane each side must elevate the other. The goat-eyed being gazed into the darkness. If it is true, that the night swallows all, then the night is impartial. The night is a thing of fairness, of equanimity. The night is a champion of balance.
