Minsc is a Companion in Baldur's Gate 3 (BG3). Companions assist the player by joining their party and have their own backstories and unique characteristics. They all have their own Classes and starting equipment.

After decades of petrification, Minsc and his miniature giant space hamster Boo have finally been revived, and they seek a life of "butt-kicking" evildoers to serve as a force of goodness, justice, and glory.

Minsc was a kind-hearted—but rather addled— Rashemaar warrior that enjoyed many adventures across the Sword Coast and beyond. He joined many adventuring parties throughout the 14th and 15th centuries DR, including the Heroes of Baldur's Gate. Minsc was famously known for his habit of talking to a hamster called Boo, whom he believed was a miniature giant space hamster, despite no one else ever witnessing any evidence of this.

Minsc BG3 Quest Walkthrough

To complete Minsc's Questline, you must first meet him in Counting House - Vault

First, bring Jaheira to Nine-Fingers' office in Guildhall. You can find the entrance at Lower City of Baldur's Gate. (X61, Y-99)
guildhall entrance final release bg3 wiki guide min

You will learn that Nine-Fingers has laid a trap to deal with him, but won't tell you the details. Luckily 2 drunken guild members let slip that Nine-Fingers plans to ambush Minsc at City's Counting House.

Travel to the Counting House, and ask Head Clerk Meadhoney to give you permission to enter the vault.

There is plenty of loot in the Counting House Vault, you can use Dimensional door/Fly/Jump to get them. When you reach the end of the Vault, use Water + Lightning to disable the gate to the lower level.

You find Minsc robbing the vault along with some Bhaalist Shapeshifters, on one of the Bhaalists, you will find the note mentioning Minsc's hideout is in the Sewers. (Succeed in perception checks and you can find the muddy footprints in the Vault, which also leads to the sewer.)

Now head to the city sewer, you can find Minsc and many Bhaalists in Abandoned Cistern (X-254, Y875). Kill everyone but Minsc (crowd control effects can help) - when this is done, unequip your weapons, activate Toggle Non-Lethal Attacks (passive option available in the Passives tab of the hotbars) and beat him down - you only need to deal to finishing blow with a Non-Lethal unarmed attack to trigger the cutscene. After this, you can choose to let Minsc live, or finish him. (Your Dream Visitor wants him dead, but Jaheira will be very upset.)

Minsc BG3 Inspirations

All characters can gain Inspiration based on their Background when your party completes content in a specific way. Minsc is of
Folk Hero background, so see our Inspirations guide for Folk Hero inspirations.

Boo BG3 Background

Although giant space hamster is a real thing in D&D, Boo has little in common with these large, muscular, bear-sized rodents. Instead, he is only the size of a regular hamster, and only minsc can understand Boo's saying. According to Minsc, Boo has a strong sense of justice, unafraid of confronting evil and taking matters into his own tiny hands. Boo is observant, patient and wise, often using his knowledge to serve as a moral guide to Minsc.

Minsc met Boo when he was just a typical Rashemi berserker, at that time he was ambushed and injured, and was only just recovering when Boo appeared. Boo declared that Minsc had felt the "poking finger of justice", marking Minsc as its champion and Boo as his guide.

After travelling with Child of Bhaal in BG1 and BG2, both Boo and Minsc were ambushed by an unknown assailant and petrified in the middle of the marketplace in the Upper City in Baldur's Gate. Until 80 years later, when Delina, a wild mage, accidentally struck the statue with a wild magic surge.

Baldur's Gate 3 Best Minsc Guides

Best Minsc Ranger Sub-Classes

Hunter

The Hunter subclass is already Minsc's default subclass, but it fits him well, so there will be no need to change it. As a Hunter Ranger, there are a few things that make it stand out to giving Minsc a great martial predator against enemies. It focuses on weapon damage, multi-target pressure, and battlefield control through attacks. As a ranger, it's also recommended for players to pick the Archery Fighting Style at level 2 to give Minsc a +2 bonus to his Ranged Attack Rolls.

At Level 3, players get to choose an option for Hunter's Prey it's recommended to pick Colossus Slayer, which will let Minsc deal an additional 1d8 damage to enemies who are not at full health. This makes him a great party member who can take down enemies quickly after they have already been damaged. At level 7, he gets a Defensive Tactic, which gives him better defenses. A good choice to pick is Multiattack Defence, which gives enemies who attack him a -4 penalty on Attack Rolls they make against you until the start of their next turn, making it harder for enemies with multiple attacks to hit Minsc. At level 11, he gets Volley and Whirlwind Attack. Volley is a class action that allows Minsc to fire a cascade of magical arrows towards enemies. Whirlwind Attack, on the other hand, lets Minsc strike out against all nearby foes with separate Attack Rolls for each target.

It's recommended for players to respec Minsc after they meet Withers to properly redistribute his Ability Scores to ensure he can be the best Hunter Ranger he can be for the party. When redistributing his points, It's important for players to prioritize his Wisdom and Dexterity. Wisdom will boost his spellcasting, which rangers get, while Dexterity boosts his overall performance from his Initiative, his Attack Rolls, and damage with ranged weapons. Players should also think about his Constitution to make sure he can succeed Concentration checks for his spells, while also giving him a better Hit Point pool. Lastly, make sure to keep Minsc's Strength to at least a 10 so that his strength modifier won't be in the negatives.

Best Equipment for Minsc in Baldur's Gate 3

Armor

helm of balduran baldurs gate 3 wiki guide 150pxHelm of Balduran

The Helm of Balduran is recommended to be equipped on Minsc as it covers the usual weaknesses that rangers usually have. With Balduran's Vitality, it constantly heals Minsc's Hit Points, which keeps him in combat as long as possible. The helm grants immunity to Critical Hits and Stuns, as well as a +1 bonus to Armour Class and Saving Throws. It transforms Minsc from the usual high-damage dealer to someone who is durable enough to be able to stand in the front lines if needed without needing constant healing. The Helm of Balduran can be obtained by defeating Ansur in the Dragon's Sanctum.

armour of agility baldurs gate 3 wiki guideArmour of Agility

The Armour of Agility is good to equip on Minsc as it gives him a high Armour Class without sacrificing his stealth or mobility. The Armour allows the wearer to add their full Dexterity modifier to the AC instead of the usual max of +2. It also doesn't impose Disadvantage on stealth checks which is great for Minsc if players plan to play him as someone who focuses on ambushes and taking the first strike to engage in encounters. The Armour of Agility can be bought from Gloomy Fentonson at Stormshore Armoury in the Lower City.

shade slayer cloak armor bg3 wiki guide 150pxShade-Slayer Cloak

The Shade-Slayer Cloak is a great cloak to equip on Minsc as it improves Critical Hit chances, which Rangers usually depend on while attacking with advantage. The cloak reduces the number needed to roll a Critical Hit while the wearer is Hiding. This means that strategically placing Minsc in advantageous positions where he can hide before he attacks will grant him the cloak's effect. The cloak can be bought from Sticky Dondo in the Guildhall.

legacy of the masters gloves baldursgate3 fextralife wiki guide 150pxLegacy of the Masters

The Legacy of the Masters is a great pair of gloves that can be equipped on Minsc as it grants him with a +2 bonus to Attack and Damage Rolls to weapons, while also giving a +1 bonus to Strength Saving Throws. Increasing both Attack Rolls and Weapons damage helps offset the penalty from the Sharpshooter feat. The bonus also means each arrow from Volley get the bonus, making it even stronger. The pair of gloves can be bought from Dammon at the Forge of the Nine in the Lower City.

Accessories

amulet of greater health amulets bg3 wiki guide 150pxAmulet of Greater Health

The Amulet of Greater Health is a great defensive accessory to equip on Minsc to get his Constitution to 23. This gives him a bigger Hit Point pool and gives him better saves to keep his concentration spells active while in combat. This means that players will not have to worry about losing a spell like Hunter's Mark with the bonus from the amulet. The amulet can be found in the House of Hope.

band of the mystic scoundrel rings bg3 wikiguide 150pxRisky Ring

The Risky Ring is a great offensive ring that can be equipped to Minsc and it greatly boosts his kit as a Hunter Ranger, especially as one who has the Sharpshooter feat. The ring grants Advantage on Attack Rolls at all times, increasing the Critical Hit chance, as well as the chance of his attack hitting. The trade-off for the crazy buff is the disadvantage on Saving Throws, but equipment like the Helm of Balduran and the Amulet of Greater Health can help ensure Minsc doesn't suffer from it too badly. The ring can be bought from Araj Oblodra in Moonrise Towers.

killers sweetheart rings bg3 wikiguide 150pxKiller's Sweetheart

Killer's Sweetheart is another great ring to equip on Minsc as a Hunter Ranger. As a ranger, Minsc wants to land as many Critical Hits as possible, the Killer's Sweetheart ensures that happens whenever Minsc is able to kill an enemy. With skills like Volley, Minsc can make sure he can activate the effect as he strikes down multiple enemies in quick succession.

Weapons

gontr mael baldurs gate 3 wiki guide 150pxGontr Mael

The Gontr Mael is a legendary Longbow that is a great weapon to equip on Minsc. The weapon greatly boosts everything he, as a Hunter Ranger needs and wants to perform well. The bow has a +3 enchantment that improves accuracy, which helps as Sharpshooter trades the attack roll for devastating damage. The longbow can also inflict Guiding Bolt on enemies, which gives Minsc yet another chance to make his next attack much easier to land. With Minsc having proficiency for Longbows, he will also get Bolt of Celestial Light, which basically allows him to deal additional Radiant damage to his attacks. He also gets Celestial Haste, which gives Minsc extra movement speed, AC, and an additional action for him to be able to make even more attacks. The Gontr Mael can be obtained from the Steel Watch Titan at the Steel Watch Foundry while doing the quest 'Disable the Steel Watch'.

Best Feats for Minsc in Baldur's Gate 3

When players recruit and respec Minsc, it's recommended for players to choose the Ability Score Improvement to raise his Dexterity to 20 first. Once his Dexterity Score is maxed out, players can pick Sharpshooter as a feat to give Minsc even more of a damage bonus boost when attacking with ranged weapons he is proficient in.

  • Sharpshooter: Your ranged weapon attacks do not receive penalties from High Ground Rules. Ranged weapon attacks with weapons you are Proficient with have a -5 penalty to their Attack Roll, but deal an additional 10 damage. (You can toggle this on or off).

His drums are so annoying. It's stupid to listen to Elfsong camp song but Minsc's stupid drums are playing. I shouldn't have helped him. In the end, I had to kill him in the camp. sry no sry

      • Anonymous

For anyone like me who keeps killing him even though you have non-lethal on, here's what eventually worked for me. Please note I'm not saying you need ALL of these conditions, just that this was what they were when I finally got it to work:

        - Non-lethal toggled on obviously
        - Left Minsc as the last enemy standing
        - Used Hold Person on him to remove Bardic Inspiration and allowed the halfling to escape
        - No additional damage effects (burning, poison, etc)
        - Had my Tav and Jaheira both next to him (the first time I failed, my Tav had teleported to the upper ledge and was technically out of combat range when it ended, Minsc immediately got back up despite being knocked out and bugged the quest, so be within his line of sight when he is KO'd)
        - Minsc saw the fake Jaheira die and reacted to it

I'm not sure what the EXACT triggers are that causes it to bug out, but following all of these was what worked for me.

Also just some tips, have someone with Sleet Storm enter the room first, target all the enemies to the left up the stairs, then move someone in and cast Hunger of Hadar on the same area, you will completely lock down that area and most of the time the enemies will keep getting stuck and just die, allowing you to mop up the stragglers and shrug off Minsc's attacks until you are ready to KO him

        • Anonymous

I knocked him out. But after defeating the other opponents he gets up with 1 HP and starts attacking again. And I can't knock him out again. Even with non-lethal attackes on no matter what attack I use. He dies.

          Anyone else face this issue?

          • Anonymous

One of the weakest, and worst companions. Despite being a great one from way back. The simple fact of the matter is you get him WAY too late to be effective or helpful. You've likely already made your group dynamic by the time you get access, AND by the time you recruit him, which is likely half-way into Act 3, you're already 80 to 90% through the game. Worse still, the only people that appreciate Minsc and Boo, are the people that know OF Minsc and Boo, which means so much of what he has to say, assuming they can decipher it without knowing his speech habits, will simply be lost on them. He joins you way too late, under conditions way too stringent. Jaheira at least has a plausible chance. Whether you recruit her for nostalgia, or just because, when you get her, you get her at the end of Act 2, AFTER having gotten to know her a little. They really shot Minsc in the foot, and then some. I... actually wish they didn't add either Jaheira or Minsc as companions, and simply made them cameo's, and potential allies for the end game. That's what truly pains me about Minsc, Boo and Jaheira. They feel, so... shoehorned in.

            • Anonymous

asking minsc for more information about him in one of his dialogues he mentions a certain keldorn, probably referring to keldorn firecam who is a companion in the old baldur's gate who has many dialogues and interactions with minsc

              • Anonymous

Seems you can't recruit him if Jaheira isn't alive from Act 2. She gets replaced by a Doppelganger in his group, which then dies even if you have non-lethal turned on, so he goes nuts and won't join you.

                • Anonymous

I'll put it as a full comment since people might not see my reply, in regards to why his stats are the way they are, ALL the companions have the default stats for their race/class. You just have to check character creation to see the that Ranger Tav has the same stats as Minsc. It's also why Astarion and Shadowheart have Firebolt as their racial Cantrip. I don't agree with Larian taking this route since it makes the companions feel uninspired but they probably did it to keep it simple for new players.

                  • Anonymous

As someone else said, if you want his stats to be lore accurate just respec 17/16/14/8/8/10, you can swap Dex and Con if you want. Also feel free to take a level in Barbarian if you really want to emulate his Rage.

Wow, that's QUITE a downgrade from his 18/93 strength in BG2! Apparently being turned to stone wrecks your strength and constitution, but also makes you more agile and...RIDICULOUSLY more wise (He went from 6 wisdom to 15!) I know, I know, edition changes and all that, but still...

This game has been out for some time and there have been almost ZERO edits here.

The only thing that changed are the hundreds of ads.

                            This site was great once…

Seems like you cant avoid killing him if you do the quest out of order (I didnt know about him until the bank heist)...

Looks like the devs tried to shoehorn Minsc and Jaheira into D&D 5 rules (ignoring, or ignorant of, Baldur's Gate, Shadows of Amn, and especially Throne of Bhaal) - and failed. Pseudo-Minsc and Pseudo-Jaheira are seriously nerfed: a low-level druid (not even a druid/fighter) and a weakling ranger. STR 12 and WIS 15? Those stats fit Boo, not Minsc.

you can find this goofy goober by going to the bank place, gaining access to the big vault area, watch him kill a mimic, kill the shadow people, talk to rich man, follow thiefs into the sewers, beat him and the shadow people up, and then follow him to his hamster

The quest also gives you a choice to either rob the rich guy of 10k or give back the 10k

Would like to know when/where you meet him. Hoping I didn't miss him in Act 1/2, and that he's in Baldur's Gate.
