Balthazar is a Boss in Baldur's Gate 3 (BG3). He is a level 8 necromancer and his Enemy Type is considered undead.
Depending on the choices player's make over the course of their time in the Gauntlet of Shar they might find themselves fighting Balthazar in his enclosure where they first meet him (X:-852, Y:-786) OR in Shadowfell at the culmination of the Find Ketheric Thorm's Relic quest. Both encounters will be detailed below.
Bosses in BG3 are powerful enemies that have increased health and pose a bigger challenge for players.
We're still close. She's in a jar on the shelf over there. — Balthazar on his mother"

Gauntlet of Shar
Balthazar's Location
Balthazar can be first met in the Gauntlet of Shar. They would be located in the Far West of the location. From the cloaker room, head north and go down the stairs. You'll see a giant locked door. You can lockpick or attack it until it breaks down. Now head to the room located east and interact with the Altar to Shar (X:-807 Y:-816).
Now go to the middle and pull the lever on the left side to open the door ahead. As you enter the room, you will find three undead skeletons. These are Balthazar's Undead Servants and they will start a conversation. From here on out, you will now have an opportunity to fight them and remove them from the board.
Balthazar's Gauntlet of Shar Tips
- If Nere survives the events of the Grymforge, you will have to fight them as they would be with Balthazar at this point.
- As pointed out, fighting Balthazar in this point would mean he would have a smaller entourage compared to their encounter in the Shadowfell.
- Balthazar will be accompanied by Ghoul Medics, possibly Nere and Flesh, the flesh golem.
- An interesting strategy is to acquire the Summon Golem Bell and get Flesh Killed before fighting Balthazar in the Guantlet of Shar. This will remove another enemy you have to deal with in this fight. Flesh is the most deadliest source of a problem beyond Balthazar themselves in this fight. Therefore, this removes a Tank and another unit from Balthazar's Retinue here in the Gauntlet of Shar. The most significant problem with Flesh is that they have a tremendous amounts of health and therefore would need a few more hits and thus become an annoyance if they do not defeat you.
- Anti-Undead weapons or magic like Turn Undead will be useful here as Balthazar primarily utilizes the undead as their servants
Shadowfell
- If you surprise him with a sneak attack and proceed to cast Counterspell as he's trying to summon his undead, you'll have a very easy kill. It is also possible to push him off the edge and insta-kill him, but you won’t get any loot.
- With some careful positioning, it's possible to end the fight with Balthazar very quickly, before he summons minions. Before the final jump, Separate one member of your party. In stealth, manoeuvre them onto the cliff to his left, so that you're almost in front of him but still out of his vision. An Arrow of Roaring Thunder or similar can knock him out of the arena.

AnonymousYou can use Minor Illusion to attract Balthazar to the Faith-Leap Trial, and lady Shar will cause Balthazar to die immediately if he walks into the darkness.

AnonymousWhat about fight with Balthazar in his necrotic lab, below Moonrise? Not a word about it. I think this case is rather good, with Minthara and Ragzlin naked zombies, and your team trapped in the pods %)

Anonymous
Odd that he doesn't drop a Tadpole. I suppose he doesn't really seem like the type to willingly put a tadpole in his head.

AnonymousI love Balthazar. Fun to listen to and a total bastard. A bit silly how he thinks some hastily-risen squishy zombies can take out a party that killed an orthon with a demonic retinue.

I sneaked upon him and hit with a weapon made out of sussur bark. He gets silenced on successful hit and can't summon or cast anything naughty. Once you open the fight with silence, you can basically just melee him to death.

AnonymousAnother easy kill:
-Trade with him and give all your gold.
-Then one-shot him with Twist of Fortune "Bloody Money" ( If not enough gold, make him vulnerable first )
-Collect your gold.
Anonymouswhen I engaged in the dialogue in front of the nightsong, I switched characters and chose karlach. walked her in front of him, and pushed him off the ledge. ez gg no re.

AnonymousIf you attack him first in Shadowfell you can Counterspell his "Animate Dead" and get a free 4v1 fight. Easiest way to cheese him.

Anonymousi lolled in this fight, i cast hunger of hadar and spike terrain under his and his army, he walkin on it so hard and in so much pain just to be counterspelled by wyll when he about to cast misty steps, he stuck with me, hasted oathbreaker padlock with 8 fresh spell slot in her arsenal

Anonymousput some smoke bomb barrels and oil barrels around him when ifirst met him, proceed to fire ball him, instant death

AnonymousYou can actually loot him with Telekenesis after he has been yeeted. His body is down there somewhere.

Anonymous> Balthazar runs up onto cliff, jumps onto platform overhanging abyss to try and get the high ground
>Gets shot twice with Eldritch Blast w/ repelling blast invocation, sent hurdling into the abyss
>No loot
>Worth it
AnonymousReturning pike may be glitched in the balthazar fight next to the nightsong. It wouldn't return during combat. Tried reloading but it still wouldn't return after throwing.

AnonymousI parked my party on the rock just before the main arena, popped off a flame ball to get him to target us and walk closer.
Applied scroll of fly to Karlach, flew her in and shoved him off the edge.
No loot, but it was damn funny.
AnonymousHow to kill easily in the chamber (7+ lvl, any difficulty).
1- Use moderately high CHA to get the Bell for his flesh golem.
2- RING THE BELL in a fight that 100% kills him (there are some across the level)
3- Go back to his chamber
4- Either attack Balth and corner him/silence him OR Use AOE to weaken the ghouls. Fireball+Gunpowder barrel likely 1-shots them even in tactician.
6- Even if you didn't silence Balt, him being alone makes it a very easy kill.
7- Congrats!
AnonymousOn easy only 2 Destroyers spawn and Karlach pushed both of them into the chasm...

Anonymous"If you surprise him with a sneak attack and proceed to cast Counterspell as he's trying to summon his undead, you'll have a very easy kill." - he can't be surprised due to "Alert" feature

AnonymousHighly recommend using one a Sussur weapon against him. Dude just starts weakly hitting you with his dagger once he's silenced.

AnonymousSo I got the cleanest kill on him, or at least I think that is what happened. Mid conversation in the shadowfell I started piling up the skeletons so I could AoE them, turns out that if you throw them near him you lose some attitude points and he complains, but since he is mid convo he can't do anything. By the time I was finish, the conversation kinda bugged and I could only start by speaking to Nightsong, Balthazar is nowhere to be seen.

AnonymousFought him in the Shadowfell and used a Telekinesis Scroll to yeet him over the edge.

AnonymousFought this guy in his chamber, when my party was level 7... Tough fight. Killed him but Gael and Wyll died in the process (even though I tried to evac Wyll, Balthasar had some skeletons outside the room, previously friendly, turned hostile against me).
Well, once I killed him, I could not find any weaknesses on his colossal meat shield, Flesh. This guy was immune to everything (turn into sheep, control person, etc). I noticed only one thing. After Balthasar was dead, he and the skeletons were 'temporarily hostile'. I went invisible (had more than two potions, having never used them until now) with Shadowheart and my paladin, walked out of the room, the meat shield and skeletons forgot about me, and came back into the room to resurrect my pals, and loot his corpse!
Anonymous

1. lockpick or cast knock on his door outside his room during the ambush, force him to join the battle
2. Disengage from the fight, let Balthazar handle his own problems, and dont forget to close the gates outside!
3. Go eat, rest, do anything and come back in like 10~15 mins and you'll see him dead on the ground lol
