Rellana, Twin Moon Knight Combat information

Negations (or Absorptions)

The negation numbers are the % of your damage that gets blocked. For example, if a negation is 60, 40% of that damage by that type will go through and 60% will be negated. Bigger number = less damage. A negation of 100 means no damage goes through, and a negation of -100 mean the enemy takes 2x damage from that source. 0 means damage goes pretty much as is.

Resistances

The resistance numbers are the buildup amount to trigger it. For example, if a resistance is 100 you must deal 100 points of the given buildup to trigger it. Note that these go down over time, and increase each time the effect procs. The values after the "/"s indicate the increased resistances after each successive proc.

Shadow of the Erdtree Bosses Ranked

Rellana, Twin Moon Knight Fight Strategy

Fight Overview

Rellana is one of the hardest bosses that you will encounter in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, with a particular focus on brutal boss design. She combines swift and aggressive melee attacks, often with short reaction time, with ranged magic spells to form a very deadly arsenal for both new and veteran players. Once she enters Phase 2, her combo attacks deal extra magic and fire damage, she gets new, optional extensions to her combo strings, and can add addtional attacks to final blows, allowing her to deal large amounts of damage per hit to an already fast paced boss fight and reducing the margin for error, as one late dodge or instance of panic rolling can cost you the attempt.

The Best Tips for Rellana, Twin Moon Knight:

Melee Users
You can use a Shield or dodge roll to either side to protect yourself from incoming physical damage. The key to winning is patience. You can summon Mimic Tear to fight alongside you or opt to summon Leda. It is recommended to only have 1 Summon so the boss will not have a dramatic increase in health pool. Beware that the NPC summon enacts a general debuff that will affect the player.

The boss's long variable combos make it difficult to get near her to launch your attack, but the player should particularly observe her 'Forward Thrust Combos', as they often provide the best punish windows.:

  • 3-string attack combo: she slices each weapon once and ends with Double Thrust with both light greatswords.
  • 6-string attack combo: she starts with an upward Thrust with each weapon, followed by one spinning attack, a quick thrust with each weapon, and ends with another Double Thrust.
  • The key to determining the end of her attack patterns is when she does the move slow. If it's fast, there's a big chance that it will be followed up by a slow attack, then if it's slow (or heavy) then, you can go in for an attack as she recovers.

When you see an opening, opt for a heavy attack for a chance to stagger her.

The second phase of the fight begins when her health drops below 50%. Rellana will infuse her Greatswords with Glintstone and Flame elements. The greatswords will glow blue and orange. The boss becomes more dangerous and the moves become more difficult to dodge. The dodge frames become shorter and the AoE of skills become larger.

Fire. The flame element creates the widest AoE when using the Sleight of Sword - Fire. This also creates smaller rings of fire in the outer AoE but they don't deal as much damage in the center of the skill. Ideally, you can roll backward three times to get yourself out of the area. Make sure to pay attention to the outer rings as you run to safety.

Magic. When you see her cast the huge Magical Greatsword, be prepared for the first downward vertical slash, this is immediately followed by a giant horizontal spin slash that reaches nearly the entire room. Make sure to dodge early for this attack because it has a deceptively wide reach. Roll forward to get a free hit on her if you get the timing right.

Another spell that she can use is the Glintblade Slicer that she uses when you're far away from her. This is an attack where she swings her weapon downward and sends a blue arc that tracks your movements. The arc varies in position, others are vertical, horizontal, or slanted. To dodge the Glintblade Slicer, you can run away to the left for the first two (if you're far enough), then dodge roll twice for the 3rd and 4th slicer, and then, go for a forward roll for the 5th one. This will allow you to close the gap.

After a while, this boss will use Twin Moons, which protects them from incoming damage and is closely followed by a plunge attack. If you get hit by the falling moon, you will get stunned and you will not be able to roll away to avoid further damage. The Pearldrake Talisman will reduce incoming Elemental Damage. Sometimes she will use Twin Moons at at close range or she will jump away to execute it. The distance will not make much of a change since you still need to jump or dodge roll (any direction) at the exact time the moon hits the ground. Te move is dodgeable.

As the fight comes to an end, the boss will alternate between Physical and Elemental Attacks. Always pay attention to her light greatswords, because this will tell you what her next move is.

Magic and Ranged Users
Sorcery users can cast Terra Magica at the door before entering, then cast two Ranni's Dark Moon back to back for great damage, chill, and to reduce the boss' magic resistance. Throughout the fight, one of the best spells to use is Night Comet, as Rellana will (most of the time) not dodge it, and it deals great damage when cast while holding a Staff of Loss on the other hand. Radagon Icon's increase in casting speed is very useful in this fight.

Incantation users can make use of tanky spirit ash summons to keep Rellana still. Meanwhile, the summoner can cast rot breath and swarm of flies from a distance. The goal is to defeat her quickly, before she uses the more damaging abilities in her second phase. It is possible to defeat her before she summons the twin moons. If she does summon them, remember to jump three times (a third time when she lands).

Rellana, Twin Moon Knight Attacks & Counters

Attack Description Counter
Upward Thrust Performs a simple upward thrust with her left blade. Always follows up with an upward thrust combo.

Roll to dodge and prepare for her follow up combo.

This attack comes out very quickly, so it can be hard to react to.

Forward Thrust Performs a simple forward thrust with her left blade. Always follows up with a forward thrust combo.

Just like the Upward Thrust, roll to dodge and prepare for her follow up combo.

This doesn't come out as fast as the Upward Thrust, so it is easier to react to.

Sideways Dash

Either dashes to the player's left and performs a slash with her right blade followed with an upward thrust with her left blade, or dashes to the player's right and performs a slash with her right blade and a forward thrust with her left blade.

Acts as an alternative combo starter to Forward Thrust or Upward Thrust depending on the direction she dashes in.

Roll into the attack for both variants, especially the first variant.

Alternatively, you can roll away to disengage, allowing you to recuperate and preventing her from following up if you are far away enough.

Upward Thrust Combo 1

After an Upward Thrust, she performs another upward thrust with her right blade, then either:

  • Slashes forward with both swords. In Phase 2, she can follow up with a Forward Thrust to extend her combo string further.
  • Slashes with her left blade while stepping to the left, before peforming a forward thrust with her left blade. Follows up with Forward Thrust Combo 1 or Forward Thrust Combo 2.
After dodging Upward Thrust, roll again to dodge the second upward thrust, then pay attention to the attack she performs afterwards. If she performs the first variant, roll forward and if in Phase 2, prepare for a possible forward thrust combo. If she performs the second variant, you should be out of range to avoid the first slash if you rolled backwards, if not roll again, then roll to dodge the forward thrust and prepare for the forward thrust combo she follows up with.
Upward Thrust Combo 2

After an Upward Thrust, spins to the player's right while swinging both her blades, then either:

  • Performs a slash with her left sword.
  • Performs two delayed diagonal slashes with both swords simultaneously.

In Phase 2, the final slash of Variant 1 and the diagonal slashes of Variant 2 will create a trail of explosions.

Roll backward for the strafe (or if the player rolled forward during 'Sideways Dash', then they will likely be out of range already), then pay attention to the attack she performs afterwards. If she performs the first variant, roll into Rellana for the final slash. If she performs the second variant, roll forward for each slash. In Phase 2, rolling forward will be more optimal for both variants due to the explosions.
Forward Thrust Combo 1

After a Forward Thrust, performs a diagonal slash with her right blade, then performs another diagonal slash with both blades simultaneously in the same direction.

In Phase 2, the final slash creates a wave of magic in front of her.

Roll accordingly to dodge both slashes. In Phase 2, rolling forward for the final slash is important for dodging the wave of magic consistently.

The final slash deals extreme damage in Phase 2 if both swords and the wave hit the player, even enough to instantly kill the player in some cases. For this reason, dodging this slash is extremely important.

Forward Thrust Combo 2

After a Forward Thrust, performs a diagonal slash with her right swords, then leans forward and stabs with both swordssimultaneously.

In Phase 2, the stab will create small explosions in the area she stabbed.

Roll accordingly to dodge both the slash and the stab. In Phase 2, rolling forward is optimal for getting out of the explosions' radius.
Forward Thrust Flurry After a 'Forward Thrust', performs a diagonal slash with both swords simulaneously and rushes the player, then performs a 4 slash flurry ending with a final slash from both swords simultaneously. One of Rellana's more challenging moves to dodge due to how easily it can cause the player to panic. Roll as soon as she reaches you to dodge the first two slashes, then immediately roll again to dodge the second two, then one more roll for the final slash.
Retreating Slash

After a Forward Thrust, Rellana slashes upward and jumps a fair distance backwards. Often performs one of her ranged spells afterwards, such as Carian Phalanx.

In Phase 2, she fires off wave of magic as well.

Roll forwards, especially in Phase 2 to avoid the wave of magic.

Since she backs away from you, heal up and/or prepare to dodge a Carian Phalanx, Carian Sovereignty, or even Rellana's Twin Moons in Phase 2.

Dash Combo From a medium distance, dashes towards the player and slashes upwards and downwards with both swords. In Phase 2, she can follow up with a Forward Thrustto extend her combo string further. Roll both slashes accordingly. In Phase 2, prepare for a possible forward slash combo.
Quick Slashes

Swiftly slashes twice with her left blade. Often used on its own before a full combo.

In Phase 2, this addtionally leaves behind a trail of explosions.

Roll forward and attack her backside. Rolling forward is also more optimal for Phase 2 to avoid the explosions without addtional movement.
Backstep Quickly backsteps to reposition for a ranged spell or a dash attack. Use this as an opportunity to retreat and heal, or prepare for her next move.
Moonlight Wave

Rellana crouches while holding the sword behind her; after a second the sword will start to glow bright, and then fire a magic arc towards the player's direction.

If she is facing away from the player, she will quickly turn around and do this attack instantly.

Roll forward just before the arc hits you.
Carian Phalanx Rellana will only use this when at a distance. There are two variations to this move:

Hovering: Much like the spell, she will summon three glintblades atop her head, which will automatically track the player after a while. She can still attack while the spell is active.

Forward: She will summon three glintblades in front of her, which immediately launch forward, tracking the target player. If the player is still far away, she will follow with a two-strike lunge. She can sometimes follow up with an upward thrust combo if the player is in front of her.

In Phase 2, both variations summon 7 glintblades instead of 3.
For the Hovering variant, be very careful to not get caught in the middle of a combo while the glintblades track you, especially in Phase 2, as the glintblades not only deal a lot of damage, but can also make you flinch and get caught by one of her normal combo moves. Keep a good distance and strafe.

For the Forward variant, roll into the glintblades as they fly towards you, then either roll forward or run towards Rellana's right side to dodge her lunge and potentially punish.
Carian Sovereignty

Useable when below 75% health.

Rellana lifts her right sword, charging up a massive magic blade. She then slams it down, and after a brief pause, performs a wide-ranged sweep. The attack nearly covers the whole arena.

Both attacks are extremely easy to roll through once you get the timing right. The attack also leaves Rellana open, allowing for an easy punish.

Note: The sweep will cause a brief lag spike when performed, however the framerate will return to normal once the particles disappear.

Phase Transition Brandishes her swords, imbuing the right sword with Glinstone magic and the left sword with Messmerfire, indicating the transition to Phase 2.

Use this as an opportunity to deal some damage or heal.

This attack can deal damage, but it's very hard for this to happen as the player needs to be in a specific position.

Phase 2
Moon-and-Fire Stance

Assumes a ready stance, swords imbued with magic, then depending on the player's distance, will do one of the following:

  • If the player is far, she casts 5 waves of magic. The first two are diagonal, the second two are horizonal, and the last one is a delayed vertical wave.
  • If the player is close, she spins around three times, surrounding herself in flame with each spin and causing fire pillars to erupt around her, alongside delayed eruptions indicated by burning spots on the ground.

Magic Variant: You can run to the left to avoid the first two waves, but the second two require perfect rolls, or alternatively you can jump the third wave to make the fourth aim upwards and miss. Finally, you can roll through the final wave.

Fire Variant: Simply retreat far away enough, while avoiding the pillars. If you aren't confident with dodging the Magic Variant, it may be preferable to trigger this instead since it is easier to avoid, and it can be used as an opportunity to regenerate.

Rellana's Twin Moons

Normally used when below 25% health, but can rarely be used before that point.

Rises into the air and summons overlapping twin moons which strike the ground one after the other, each shaking the earth with moonlight and creating a massive shockwave, before striking the ground down herself to create one final shockwave.

All three attacks launch targets into the air, dooming them to be hit by the others.

Rolling is extremely risky, for this reason it's better to jump each shockwave. The timing is very forgiving even if it looks like you would fall too early. Do not get too close, or else you will still be hit.

Avoid getting hit by this attack at all costs, as all three shockwaves together are enough to kill even the most armored players.
