Enemy Changes in Baldur's Gate 3

BG3 Enemy Behavior Changes

Enemy AI is smarter than ever because Enemies employ more tactical strategies and they possess some features available to player characters. For instance, if Enemies are unarmed and they see a Weapon lying around nearby, they’ll grab it and attack with it. This scenario can be used to a player's advantage by disarming a target beforehand. This pushes them into a situation where they’ll need to utilize Action Points just to run towards and equip a Weapon in order to hit back.

Furthermore, enemy AIs are able to use their resources more efficiently. For example, they’ll carefully plan their next series of attacks so they can still have room to execute other actions like Dash or some Spells in the future. They can even use Throw to heal their party members from a distance by hurling Healing Potions at them, similar to how a player character would. Of course, these enhancements will be used by friendly NPCs as well.

Baldur's Gate 3 Patch 9 Changes and improvements to all Enemies:

  • Tooltips now clearly indicate what happens if a spell or action misses or if the enemy Saves.
  • Combat no longer ends prematurely if you're far from the enemies and have gone to Sleep.
  • The NPCs at the entrance to the grove no longer turn hostile if you knock out and kill the last enemy.
  • Fixed enemies skipping their actions if they had grouped initiative.

Combat Strategies and How to Defeat Enemies in BG3

For Spell Casters: Choose your Spells.

Spellcasters in BG3 usually set themselves far enough from the battle, but close enough to deal damage. Just like most actions in BG3, spells also have a range that determines how far you can cast spells from a distance. This gives the character a safe distance to deal damage to groups of enemies, especially against multiple targets. Spells like, Fireball, Burning Hands, Magic Missile, or Melf's Acid Arrow are great because they can deal damage to multiple targets. However, Spellcasters need to be wary of any allies that are near their target since Spells can also affect allies and friendly creatures.

For STR Characters: Shove your enemies.

Shove is a default bonus action that is available to characters, and it's influenced by the STR score. A tactical shove can make it easy for a party to take out an enemy, and having a character with high STR or points invested in Athletics will give them a high chance of succeeding their Shove attempts. When attempting to Shove an enemy, a few points to consider are:

  • The direction where you're coming from determines where a target will be pushed towards
  • As a Bonus Action, Shove is sometimes a better option that using "Disengaging" when moving away from an enemy
  • Investing in STR and Athletics for higher success chance

Choose your target during fights

When facing large groups of enemies, the first objective is to identify the Melee, Ranged, Spell Casters, and the Boss (if available) or large enemy targets. Once the enemies have been identified, the player should prioritize making moves against the Casters, Ranged, and Melee attackers in that order. Casters can deal a lot of damage and they can turn the battle into their side if left unchecked. On the other hand, the bosses or large enemies can be kept under a Crowd Control (CC) spell, while the rest of their group is being handled.

  • Notes, Lore, and Tips for Enemies go here.
  • Enemies can also shove characters. To resist Shove attempts, invest in STR/DEX or Acrobatics.
  • At the start of combat, position melee characters toward the front of the battle. This minimizes the movement or steps they need to make to reach a target. Ranged attackers and Spell Casters can seek a safe position behind the melee character/s.
