Game Progress Route for Mortal Shell 2

Step 1: Prologue

The first thing you must do once the game starts is to get used to the mechanics. The game offers you a great area to get used to attacking, blocking or parrying, dodging, picking up objects, understanding how Beacons work, explore and even face bosses. This area is the Disciple's Pass, where the Prologue takes place. Here's a walkthrough entirely dedicated to the prologue, allowing you to find bosses who will be a great challenge for new players:

Walkthrough - Prologue

Here, you'll experience your first time using a shell in Mortal Shell 2, being able to play with Harros. Sadly, Harros will only be with you during the Prologue.

It is also very important to get used to pick up objects nearby. You'll encounter two main objects during your time in the Disciple's Pass, the Laterite and the Ventrium. And later, you'll encounter a third similar item, the Dorsalite. These three items, plus Coins, allow you to improve your weapons later.

Ventrium Mortal Shell 2

Lastly, you'll also learn about the Gloom. Enemies drop Gloom, which can mainly be used to improve the Harbinger at any Beacon. If you lose, you'll drop all your Gloom, and if you die before picking it back up, it'll disappear, only allowing you to pick up the Gloom you last dropped. Thankfully, you can retrieve your Gloom easily by reaching it out or even shoot it from the distance.

Step 2: The Marrow Keep

Once you are done with the Prologue, you'll reach the Marrow Keep. This is the central hub, and here, you can find a lot of things. Your task is to explore the entire area and meet all the NPCs that will gladly receive you. Here, you'll meet:

  • Zhirelle, who will allow you to strengthen your bond with all Shells. This is important since it allows you to unlock all your shells's skill. And, as a personal tip, only focus on strengthen the bond with the Shell or Shells you'll use during your first run. You'll have the chance to see the rest later on.
  • Franz, who will allow you to improve your weapons in exchange for Coins, Laterites, Ventriums and Dorsalites. Later on, you'll also be able to improve your Sidearms and Tarstones.

  • Merrick, who will sell you the maps to locate weapons and sidearms in exchange for Coins. You'll also be able to buy a few Tarstones. Here's also where you'll be able to sell those items that can only be sold and have no further usage.

Step 3: First time in Fainweald

Soon enough, you'll get to the top of the Marrow Keep and from there, you'll be able to choose your next destination. There are two gates here: The corrupted and the cleaned one. From this point, the game allows you to explore rather than keep you in a straight progress, but the focus of this page is to provide you help by lining up a recommended path that allows you to progress naturally so, with this in mind, we'll head to the cleaned gate, step on the launcher, and go to the Widow's Overlook.

Widow's Overlook Mortal Shell 2

The Widow's Overlook is a sub-location of Fainweald, which is the first region you are in. You have no clue of where you are at since the map will be full of fog, and the danger here is real since you have no shield, so you have two main missions: Find a map and a shell.

  • First, the map. Ruk has altars or statues where he'll leave the fragments of the map, and you must collect them to know where to go next.
  • Then, your shell. The first shell you'll pick up in Fainweald is Tiel, and you'll use it for a while, so you better get used to it. Switching to another one is not an option yet.

These two points are covered in this walkthrough:

Walkthrough - Northeast Gate: The First Steps

Step 4: Cleansing the Mushroom Village Gate

Once you've picked up the first Map fragment, you'll see how three Corrupted Gates got marked. These Gates must be visited. They have a region inside, and at the end of it, you'll face a boss who has stole some Ova, as your task is to retrieve it.

While the game is mostly open for you to explore, it is mandatory to go through this Gate first, as it'll allow you to cleanse the corruption from the rest of the paths available. The entrance to the Mushroom Village is just close to where you claimed Tiel and the Map fragment, and just a few steps afterwards, you'll find the Glutted Mire. For a dedicated walkthrough of the Glutted Mire check this page:

Glutted Mire

The Glutted Mire is ruled by Magdalena, The Lady of the Woods. She'll be waiting for you at the end of the Glutted Mire, and you must kill her. Once you are done with her, you'll appear back at the Marrow Keep. This is a great chance to visit Zhirelle and upgrade your Bond with your shell, or check on Franz to upgrade your weapons. Don't forget to use the Gloom Siphon to be able to continue through the game.

Magdalena Lady of the Woods Mortal Shell 2

There are a lot of things you can do after cleansing this gate, like heading north from it to find Gragu's Shell and the Troubadour's Lute.

Step 5: The Sanguine Caverns

The next gate we recommend to visit is the one located in the Sanguine Caverns. There are several paths you can take to reach there, but the best one is the one north of the Widow's Overlook Beacon, since it'll allow you to claim Proxima's Shell and the Veteran's Battle Axe.

For a detailed walkthrough of this pathway, you can always check this page:

Walkthrough - North Gate: The Crimson Maws

Once you reach the Stonebled Gate, you'll finally visit your second gate region, which is also named the Sanguine Caverns. Here, you'll find and battle the Lost Child. You can check this page for a walkthrough of this area.

Step 6: The Ruins of Nochte

Now, it's time to get to the last gate of Fainweald, which is located to the west of the Mushroom Village or to the southwest of the Sanguine Caverns. The ideal route to reach this area also involves you visiting the Citadel of Penance, which you can open with a lever provided by the Bloodcursed Lithopod. The Citadel of Penance doesn't have a direct connection with the Ruins of Nochte but there's a Bone Gate that can take you there through the Desolate Peak.

Also, you'll find Eredrim's Shell in the Citadel of Penance, shortly after defeating The Warden, the main boss of the area.

For more information consult this page.

Walkthrough - Northwest Gate: Ruins of Imprisonment

The Gate at the Ruins of Nochte allows you to reach the Prisoner's Domain, your third gate region if you follow the suggested order. Here, you'll have to face the Nameless Captive, a giant soldier with a blade on its head and no arms, offering a brutal battle.

Step 7: Heading to Mammon

With all three Corrupted Gates cleared in Fainweald, there's not much to do there besides collecting all remaining weapons and sidearms you might've left behind, and explore areas you probably didn't visit earlier. But once you feel you did everything to the north, it's time to head south.

At this point you can either head back to the Marrow Keep and use the launcher to reach Mammon or simply use any beacon to teleport to the Outskirts of Mammon Beacon, which is the starting point for this region.

Ruk Map Mammon Mortal Shell 2

The first thing you must do here is to pick up the first Map fragment, which will unveil the three Corrupted Gates you must visit to cleanse and retrieve more Ova. The map is just a few steps away from the Outskirts of Mammon Beacon, and from there, you can easily reach the gate we suggest to visit first in Mammon, the Gate of Mammon.

Step 8: Path to the Gate of Mammon

To reach the Gate of Mammon, you'll have to follow a simple path located behind the Ruk's statue were you pick up the first Map of Mammon. This will take you to the Abandoned Slums, and from there, you can easily connect with the Lonesome Spire which is where the Gate of Mammon is.

Gate of Mammon Mortal Shell 2

For a detailed route, you can always follow this walkthrough:

Walkthrough - Southwest Gate: Crossing the Slums

Inside the Gate of Mammon, you can find a new region, the Withered Shoals. This region is ruled by the Hexapod, a six-fingered beast that isn't from this world. For more details, you can visit the Withered Shoals page and head to the Walkthrough section.

Withered Shoals

Once outside this Corrupted Gate, you can always come back to the Lonesome Spire to visit the High Lord's Keep and the Royal Crypt of Mammon, which is where you can find Lazlo's Shell.

Step 9: Path to the Peak

The next Corrupted Gate we recommend to visit is located at the Vestige of Infinity, which is the large white mountain to the south of Mammon. You can reach this area by heading to the large bridge in front of the Outskirts of Mammon Beacon. This bridge is known as the Road to Absolution. It directly links with another location, the Castigator's Keep. From here, the path to the Vestige of Infinity is simple, as you must take an elevator near the Castigator's Keep Beacon.

The Elevator also takes you to Proxima's machine gun, the Triarch Repeater. Check the Triarch Repeater's page for more info about how to locate the weapon.

Once you reach the Gate of Infinity, you'll be able to visit the Faded Citadel. This area is ruled by Isaac, the Scholar-Prince, a giant, agile moth warrior able to fly and cut you up to pieces.

Faded Citadel

The Vestige of Infinity also offers you a direct connection to the Last Steps, which is the area where you can find Sariel's shell and his two weapons, the Clockwork Scythe and the Caged Hystrix.

Step 10: The Last Gate

If you followed the suggested route, then the last gate you'll visit will be the Sester's Gate, located in the Renevant Graves. You can reach this area from any of the two Bone Gates located to the east of the Outskirts of Mammon Beacon.''''

Walkthrough - Southeast Gate: The Autumn Peak

This area also contains the Sester's Censer, which is required to unlock Genessa's shell, so don't forget to pick it up.

Sester's Refuge Mortal Shell 2

The Sester's Gate hides the Conquered Temple. This isolated and cold place hides several secrets, and exploring it entirely is a brutal experience. At the end of this region, you'll find Droeg, the Conquerer.

Endgame

The last step is the Endgame. Once you appear at the Marrow Keep after completing your last gate, and you follow the usual routine of using the Gloom Siphon and talk to Milos, you'll see how a new path gets revealed.
