Mortal Shell 2 Open Beta Now on Steam

The Mortal Shell 2 Open Beta is now live on Steam, allowing players to experience 3 hours of gameplay of Cold Symmetry's highly anticipated action RPG before its full launch later this year. Available as a free download on Steam, the Mortal Shell 2 Beta offers a substantial preview of the game's dark fantasy world, introducing its revamped combat, open-world exploration, and select classes while allowing players to earn progress that will carry over to the final release.

The Open Beta includes the game's Prologue and extends into a sizeable area, including the Dark Morrow location, which acts as the player hub. The player hub houses multiple NPCs that the player can interact with, offering various services and offering tasks that will allow the Harbinger to unlock additional mechanics that contribute to their progression.

Players will begin their journey as the Harbinger, a prophesied warrior tasked with recovering the sacred Ova from corrupted zealots and monstrous abominations. At first, the Harbinger does not possess any unique abilities of their own, but will be able to unlock them as they possess fallen warriors known as Shells. These Shells come with their own unique abilities and passives that highlight a specific gameplay, differing from one another.

One of the featured playable Shells is Tiel, the Acolyte, a nimble assassin, and one of eight Shells planned for the full release of the game. Players can uncover his remains, unlock his unique ability and passive to experiment with the sequel's expanded combat mechanics, weapon customization, and character progression. The other shell available is Harros the Vassal, which is the starting shell available at the Prologue. Harros is a mighty warrior who highlights a straightforward melee combat that can turn enemies and itself into stone to freely strike enemies and to avoid receiving damage from an incoming attack.

What Carries Over after the Open Beta?

The Open Beta showcases approximately the first three hours of gameplay, including 2 Shells and a selection of weaponry. Although most progression will be reset before the full launch, players can unlock two permanent rewards by participating in the beta. Completing the Open Beta grants the exclusive rewards:

• Flayed Harbinger cosmetic, which can be claimed upon the full game release.
• Players who progress beyond Marrow Keep unlock the ability to skip the Prologue when starting the full version.

In the past months, Mortal Shell 2's X account has been posting videos with a cryptic countdown. The first one was posted on March 4, with the numbers 671, pertaining to the remaining hours before an event takes place. Every week after that, a new video was posted with a similar countdown on March 11, 18, 19, and 26. This leads to the latest update, posted today on March 31, with a 24-hour countdown, leaving fans speculating a release or a gameplay reveal from Mortal Shell 2.

Updates to the sequel are rarely sighted, except for the Mortal Shell 2 PC Beta details shared on the game's official Steam page. Posted on February 26, the developers, Cold Symmetry, confirmed that they're building a Beta exclusively available for PC users. The Open PC Beta is planned to go live to everyone this summer of June, but they also mentioned that they will be running a closed private technical tests on PC. The closed beta will be an earlier test build that will only be given to a handful of testers.
