Banshee
The Bravado Banshee is a two-door sports car appearing in Grand Theft Auto IV, Episodes from Liberty City, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, Grand Theft Auto V, Grand Theft Auto Online, and due to appear in Grand Theft Auto VI.
The Banshee has appeared throughout the Grand Theft Auto series, returning from the 3D Universe. It shares its reputation with the Infernus for being one of the two longest running sports cars in the series.
Influence
[edit | edit source]In the HD Universe, the Banshee is intended to resemble the 1996–2002 Dodge Viper (SR II), albeit with a V8 engine instead of a V10, while featuring a side-pipe exhaust and a shorter roofline similar to the second-generation (ZB) model. The headlights faintly resemble the RE-Amemiya Sleek Light Kit available for the third-generation Mazda RX-7 (FD), with the front bumper seemingly inspired by the 2004–2009 Honda S2000 (AP2). The taillights resemble those of the 2004–2010 Aston Martin DB9, although the body-color panel that separates the taillight elements is replaced by an integrated reverse light.
In GTA IV, V and Online, its interior appears to be inspired by that of the ZB series Viper. In GTA VI, the interior was revamped to resemble that of the aforementioned SR II series Viper that it was primarily based on.
Etymology
[edit | edit source]The Banshee is a female spirit in Irish mythology, usually seen as an omen of death and a messenger from the underworld.
Design
[edit | edit source]Grand Theft Auto IV and Episodes from Liberty City The Banshee assumes a similar design to its Grand Theft Auto III iteration, but featuring a large profile and more realistic details. The bumper occupies most of its front end, complete with a central intake, and a black splitter with BRAVADO on the center. The edges above the bumper are occupied by two black housings, each one featuring two circular lamps. The hood hinges on the front and opens forward, having two black clamps on the sides.
The sides denote the car's curved profile, having slightly flared arches and curved doors. Black skirts can be seen at the bottom, along with curved exhaust pipes near the rear wheels. The rear-view mirrors are attached to the edges of the hood and the windshield is surrounded by a black frame.
The rear of the car is very stylish, featuring a small extension emulating a ducktail spoiler, a black strip on the center and two tail lights that follow the shape of the rear. A large bumper with a carbon-fiber diffuser can be seen.
The Banshee may spawn with several cosmetic accessories:
- A variant with a hard-top roof.
- A variant with chrome roll-bar hoops.
- A variant with a vented hood.
Hardtop Banshees do not have windows, so they are easier to steal than other cars. This is counteracted by an alarm that will go off when the door is opened.
The Banshee may spawn with a single color, or like the GTA III model, a two-tone color, where the secondary one is applied in the form of a stripe. It features 10-spoke split wheels, wrapped in low-profile tires.
Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars In the DS version of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, the Banshee appears similar to either the Phoenix or its Grand Theft Auto: Vice City rendition, while in the PSP/iOS version it resembles the GTA IV rendition, but always features two white stripes.
Grand Theft Auto V and Online The Banshee returns to Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online holding the same design as its previous appearance in GTA IV, although it now only spawns with a vented hood. In the enhanced version of GTA V, the Banshee is given an updated version of its interior model.
Color distribution is the same as before, but the interior is decorated with stitches that are painted with the secondary color.
Grand Theft Auto VI
The Banshee appears at an intersection in Vice City in the first trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI (1:07), seemingly unchanged from its previous iteration in Grand Theft Auto V and Online. It later re-appears in the second trailer, with the addition of new front indicator lights and a revamped interior modeled after its real-world counterpart.
Performance
[edit | edit source]Grand Theft Auto IV and Episodes from Liberty City The Banshee in GTA IV and EFLC, is very fast, thanks to its 300ci (4.9L), twin-turbocharged V8 mated to a five-speed gearbox with an FR configuration. The acceleration and top speed are similar to that of most exotic sports cars in the game, such as the SuperGT, Turismo, and Comet. It is stated to have a top speed of 99 mph in the files.
The car has sharp handling with the expense of stability. The high-powered engine coupled to the rear wheel drive causes the rear wheels to lose traction easily. Fortunately, power distribution is smooth, making it easier to control. It requires extra caution to maintain the traction when cornering at high speed, otherwise the rear wheels will slide. Many, however, find this handling characteristic preferable. Those who are able to control the car's high power output will be able to play with this weakness.
The Banshee is an excellent racing vehicle, given that the player can properly control the squirrely handling. The suspension is firm and set low, often leaving the Banshee's ground effects victim to curbs and other low-laying objects.
Braking is very good; the Banshee out-brakes every other vehicle in the game, and ABS is standard on all models. Crash deformation is poor; the vehicle shall shake off mild collisions, but cannot take many major hits before the engine fails or bursts into flames, making it a poor choice for pursuit situations.
As a result of the outstanding performance, this can easily compete with the fastest cars in the game. However, for some reason, the Banshee is not considered to be a supercar in online race classes or by characters (e.g. it is not approved by Alex Chilton, who is fond of supercars/expensive cars).
Like the Infernus, Buffalo, F620, Sultan RS and Bullet GT, the Banshee occasionally backfires from its exhaust pipes when shifting gears, or when kicking in the accelerator quickly from a complete stop.
Grand Theft Auto V and Online Returning to GTA V, the Banshee now sports better acceleration, and a significantly higher top speed. Sharing the same braking distance in GTA IV, it is only slightly different performance-wise from GTA IV. The handling line has slightly improved, due to GTA V's new vehicle handling. Overall, the car is a good pick for an escape car, but not so good for off-roading, or for fast cornering, due to its back-heavy weight distribution, and its terrible grip.
Although the Banshee in GTA V is identical visually to the one in GTA IV, the engine now produces a sportier sound, similar to the real-life Dodge/SRT Viper. Its engine size is now updated to a massive 8.4 liter carbureted V8 engine as reported on Legendary Motorsport (GTA Online), though it remains a V8 and not a V10 like the Viper. However, it is severely underpowered, even with twin turbochargers. The durability is also rather poor, with it being very easy to negatively camber the wheels, which severely cripples the vehicle's performance. What causes many players to turn away from the legendary sports car is the low top speed; only 140 mph, according to the website. However, the actual top speed is even lower; using the in-game speedometer in the enhanced edition, one can tell that the unmodded Banshee only achieves a top speed of roughly 110 mph. However, it is still capable of catching up to supercars like the Infernus and even the Zentorno without any modification.
According to Southern San Andreas Super Autos (prior to the website's overall after the Ill-Gotten Gains Part 2 update), the Banshee has a 0-60 mph time of 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 140 mph, powered by a 8.4L V8. The Benny's Original Motor Works website states that the car has a top speed of 150 mph and a twin-turbo V8 engine, with the car weighing in at 2600kg.
Variants
[edit | edit source]| Image | Vehicle | Description | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Banshee 900R | Wide-body racing variant of the Banshee, with an array of visual and mechanical modifications. | Added to Grand Theft Auto Online as part of the January 2016 Update. | |
| Special variants | |||
| Brucie Kibbutz's Banshee | In GTA IV, Brucie Kibbutz owns a unique black Banshee with a yellow stripe, which he dubs "The Bitch". He intended to use this car in the street race during the mission No. 1, but the car failed to start (likely due to the fact that Brucie personally tuned the car). Having an alternative in mind, Brucie called his friend Stevie for a replacement car; Stevie's bright yellow Comet. A normal Banshee in yellow with a black stripe can be found on the streets. The player can see Brucie's black and yellow Banshee on Auto Eroticar's website.
The same car can also be seen in the LS Car Meet in GTA Online as part of the Los Santos Tuners update. It features a unique license plate, "D481TCH". |
||
| Exotic Exports variant | In Brucie's Exotic Exports side missions in Grand Theft Auto IV, he will eventually request a unique navy blue Banshee with a white stripe. | ||
| Stevie's Car Thefts variant | A Banshee is requested as part of Stevie's Car Thefts in Grand Theft Auto IV, sporting an orange body with a brighter orange stripe. As with all of the cars Stevie requests, the requested vehicle will respawn at the same spot until the player delivers one to S&M Auto Sales in Bohan. The player can save one at any safehouse before returning to deliver one to Stevie. The car may spawn in the cabriolet or hardtop variant. | ||
| White Banshee | During Hossan Ramzy's unique encounter in Grand Theft Auto IV, his debtor drives a unique white Banshee with a black stripe with one of all random pearlescent colors. After killing him, the player can get the car. It may also spawn without its chrome roll-bar hoops when it is a cabriolet variant. | ||
| Grey Banshee | In the mission Meltdown in Grand Theft Auto IV, the player steals a Banshee from a random NPC to chase after Luca. The Banshee is grey with a dark stripe with one of the aforementioned pearlescent colors. | ||
| Purple Banshee | Chan Jaoming is depicted in GTA Chinatown Wars to own a modified Banshee, which features purple paint with red stripes, a spoiler and light purple underglows at night, similar to the modified Comet. The car is obtainable in two missions: The first is in Jackin' Chan, when the car is caught in an inferno following a failed attempt by the Irish Killers to kidnap Chan, and the car must be used to transport Chan to safety. The player must fail the mission to obtain the car. The second is during Clear the Pier, when Chan uses the car as a getaway vehicle. The player can pin the car to a wall and carjack it outright, allowing them to complete the mission while the car is in their possession. | ||

Real-Life Counterpart
[edit | edit source]A one-of-a-kind real life reproduction of the Banshee was built by West Coast Customs, made by fitting a modified 2006 Dodge Viper SRT-10 with custom fabricated bodywork. It was given away by Rockstar Games in a GameStop PowerUp Rewards Epic Rewards Giveaway contest to promote the release of Grand Theft Auto V. It began on September 1, 2013, sixteen days before the release of the game.[7][8] On September 30, 2013, the contest ended and the winner was 56-year-old Cheri Parker from North Carolina.[9] She later sold the car on eBay in 2014 to pay for her sons' college fees and because the unique Banshee parts were difficult to reproduce if they broke.[10][11]
The replica features a handcrafted and stitched interior made to resemble the in-game design, with seats upholstered and embroidered with the Banshee name and insignia. The dashboard, door panels and center console were reconfigured and finished with carbon inlays, and a multi-speaker premium sound system was installed.[12] Mechanically, the car is unchanged from the Viper on which it is based; only the bodywork and interior are custom.
The Banshee replica briefly appears in the background of a scene in the Better Call Saul episode "Bagman," parked in a garage alongside other sports cars. The scene was shot at Flat 12 Gallery, a Dallas, Texas-based collector car dealer which the car had coincidentally been sold to in December 2018, following several changes in ownership after the initial 2014 auction.[13][14] The car's appearance in the episode is an anachronism, as the episode is set in 2004.

Oversights
[edit | edit source]Grand Theft Auto IV
- Despite its obvious sporty appearance, the game does not classify the Banshee as a sports car.ref? Many characters show disdain for the car, and many of Niko's girlfriends do not like it.
Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars
- In the Nintendo DS version, when the Banshee is looked at from the front, the trunk section appears to be cut off. Chan Jaoming's modified Banshee does not have this issue.
Grand Theft Auto Online
- The Rockstar Games Website listing for the vehicle omits Benny's Original Motor Works from the list of dealers.
Radio Stations
[edit | edit source]- In Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, the Banshee plays Tortoise.
