Packer

The MTL Packer is a tractor trailer truck appearing in Grand Theft Auto IV, Episodes from Liberty City, Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online, and due to appear in Grand Theft Auto VI.

The Packer has appeared throughout the Grand Theft Auto series, returning from the 3D Universe where it assumed the design of a fixed-body car transporter. The Grand Theft Auto IV iteration of the Packer later appears as the Jobuilt Hauler in Grand Theft Auto V and Online, with a new manufacturer and subtle design changes.

Description

[edit | edit source]

Grand Theft Auto VI

The Packer can be seen in the distance, along a main road in Leonard County, where Lucia and Jason are fleeing in a Tulip, in the first trailer (1:00).

Two Packers can be seen driving down Port Gellhorn in the second trailer (2:28). A Packer can also be seen entering the Allied Crystal Sugar Refinery in a official screenshot of Ambrosia. The rear of another Packer is visible parked next to a Xero gas station in the artwork for Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look. In the latter three appearances, the Packer seems to have received design updates compared to its prior iterations shown in the game's first trailer and in GTA V and Online.

In the August 2026 GTA VI leaks, several Packers with trailers hitched can be seen departing Allied Crystal Sugar Refinery, one of which is shown to be hijacked by Jason, driven by a female driver.[1]

Influence

[edit | edit source]

Grand Theft Auto IV and Episodes from Liberty City In Grand Theft Auto IV and Episodes from Liberty City, the Packer appears to be influenced by the Kenworth K-100, although it shares details from 2000-era Freightliner cab-over trucks, mainly the square-shaped radiator grille.

Grand Theft Auto V and Online In Grand Theft Auto V and Online, the Packer assumes a completely different appearance, resembling the second-generation International 9000 series truck, although the sleeper cab configuration resembles the Mack Vision CX613. With the additional cab-mounted air deflector, the truck resembles the Mack Pinnacle CXU613, a variation of the Vision with improved roof aerodynamics. The front fascia appears to also take some elements from the International 4700 series. Grand Theft Auto VI The engine sound apparent in the August 2026 GTA VI leaks appears to be sampled from an Iveco Stralis, specifically the Cursor 13 capacity model.[2][1]

Design

[edit | edit source]

Grand Theft Auto IV and Episodes from Liberty City The Packer in Grand Theft Auto IV and Episodes from Liberty City assumes a cab-over-engine, fixed-body design with a signature flat front end and tall chrome grille. Prominent "V24 SUPERCHARGED" badging along the sides stand out and cement the Packer as a powerful hauler. The Packer may spawn with one of three configurations:

  • A flatbed configuration with two chrome platforms, seemingly configured to transport vehicles
  • A large liquid tanker configuration, with a short chrome tanker and a rear ladder
  • A vehicle ramp configuration similar to its 3D Universe iteration, with articulated frames around the front quarters and rear. The ramp configuration has no utility for transporting cars or even perform stunts, as there is no extension reaching to the ground.

The Packer spawns in a variety of primary colors for most of the cab and secondary colors for the lower portions of the same. It uses a set of industrial wheels that are also shared with the Benson, the Mule and the Phantom.

Grand Theft Auto V and Online As stated above, the Packer in Grand Theft Auto V and Online takes on a completely different design, most closely resembling the Brute Stockade and the JoBuilt Phantom, with the Phantom especially sharing several elements of the cab, such as the split windscreen, mirrors, the cab roof, including the sun deflector, lights and horns, and side steps. The rear bumper and fifth wheel mounting is identical to the Phantom; however, additional rear fenders have been added behind the rear tag axle.

The truck is fitted with a CB radio, and occasional trucker chatter can be heard regardless of whether the main radio is turned on or off. The chatter will only play if playing as Trevor and in Blaine County.

The Packer spawns in a variety of single colors applied to the main body, front bumper and rear fenders, and it uses a set of industrial wheels also shared with the Benson, the Mule, and the Phantom.

Grand Theft Auto VI

The Packer remains largely unchanged in Grand Theft Auto VI, aside from updated detailing including a new generic industrial wheel design, a new grille mesh, and new MTL badging resembling the block lettering on Mack trucks.

Performance

[edit | edit source]

Grand Theft Auto IV and Episodes from Liberty City Compared to its 3D Universe iteration, the Packer is much faster thanks to its powerful engine and possessing better handling due to its relatively short wheelbase. Having a good chassis, it can withstand a fair amount of crashes, and at least 2–3 head-on explosions before exploding. Having a low top speed and a lot of weight, the vehicle is very slow and is not helped by its rear-wheel-drive layout; however, it is acceptable considering its load and purpose.

The Packer is claimed to be powered by a 24-valved supercharged engine (mistakenly stylized as "V24 supercharged"), which powers the rear wheels through a seven-speed gearbox (a considerably high-yet-accurate amount), where the gear shifts are very low and ratios seem almost equal (apart from the last gear).

The 7-speed gearbox seems to be a rare use of an auxiliary gearbox in-game; a secondary gearbox working very similarly to twin-geared bikes – the secondary gearbox having less gears than the primary one, but giving the primary gearbox more potential by allowing a higher combination of gears. The same feature is found on the Phantom.

The Packer's engine sound is shared with the Fire Truck, the Trashmaster and the Ripley, not being as smooth as the Mule's nor as loud as the Phantom's.

Grand Theft Auto V and Online The performance of the Packer is stellar compared to its Grand Theft Auto IV iteration. The top speed is above average and the acceleration is the best out of all semis. However, like a typical semi, handling requires some braking, but not as much as one would think.

The Packer is claimed to have a 24-valved supercharged engine, according to badging, but its in-game model appears to be a single-cam V8 engine due to the spark-plug textures. It powers the rear wheels through a more conventional five-speed gearbox, and uses a similar sound from trucks such as the Fire Truck, the Trashmaster and the Ripley.

Oversights

[edit | edit source]

Grand Theft Auto IV

  • If the player begins an intercourse with the prostitute, the protagonist's feet will stick out through the front of the Packer.
  • If the player damages or shoots the front bumper from a Packer with the ramp attached, the bumper will not be seen hanging because of the support beams mounted on it. Instead, the turning lights will be seen moving as if they are part of a damaged front bumper. This is probably an oversight.
  • The Packer lacks any license plates.

Grand Theft Auto V and Online

  • The Packer's badges incorrectly refer to the engine as a "V24", where it actually means "24 valve", which is supposed to be written as "24v". This also applies to the Flatbed, Brickade and Phantom.

Trivia

[edit | edit source]

Grand Theft Auto IV

  • In GTA IV, there is a different unused ramp component for the flatbed Packer that exists in the game's internal files. This ramp component attaches to the back of the flatbed Packer. If spawned in the game, this incomplete model's solid area does not match its physical appearance because its collision detection is not properly lined up.

Episodes from Liberty City

  • An unused duplicate of the Packer, internally named packer2 is left unused in The Lost and Damned.

Grand Theft Auto V and Online

  • Despite the Packer's 2-person capacity in normal gameplay, in the mission Pack Man, it seats three people (Franklin, Trevor, and Lamar).
