When you're doing 90 in the fast lane, this is the car right on your ass flashing its high beams. If you're quite rich, and really an asshole, and you want everyone to know it, you can't do better.
Southern San Andreas Super Autos description, GTA Online.

The Übermacht Sentinel is a two-door mid-size car appearing in Grand Theft Auto IV, Episodes from Liberty City, Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online.

The car returns from the 3D Universe where it assumed the design of a mid-size sedan.

Influence

[edit | edit source]

Grand Theft Auto IV

[edit | edit source]

The Sentinel appears to be based on the BMW M3 (E46). The front fascia is similar to the Lincoln LSE, as seen in the headlight shape and front bumper. The tail light layout, as well as the hood scoop/vents and large rear wing of the XS variant, is derived from the first-generation Subaru Impreza WRX STI.#

Grand Theft Auto V and Online

[edit | edit source]

The Sentinel appears to be based on the BMW M3 Convertible (E93), although the grille is a single unit as opposed to the trademark "kidney" grille found on BMW models. This gives the car a front facia appearance somewhat akin to the Lexus ISF USE20, with the tail light shape akin to that of the Saab 9-3.

Design

[edit | edit source]

Grand Theft Auto IV

[edit | edit source]

The Übermacht Sentinel in Grand Theft Auto IV is designed as compact two-door sports coupe. It assumes a more rounded design, with a detailed bumper, flat grille and single headlamps. Two small intakes can be seen on either side of the bonnet. The sides have long vertical vents on the front fenders, angled side skirts and a detail running towards the rear. Also visible are miniscule STD badges in front of the doors, near the side skirts and front wheel wells. The rear end features a standard set of tail lamps on either, and a detailed boot, featuring chrome letterings displaying the car's manufacturer and name on the lower sides, a chrome strip above the license plate, and the manufacturer's emblem above.

The Sentinel spawns in a variety of primary colours on the body and usually with silver or black secondary painted alloy rims, except for one set with gold rims. The vehicle uses 12-spoke rims with a chrome lip around, as well as low-profile tyres.

It is equipped with a GPS system with a female voice, but only if the player leaves the "selected cars" (default) option in the audio menu.

Grand Theft Auto V and Online

[edit | edit source]

The Sentinel is redesigned once again in Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online into a hard-top convertible with a more modern design.

The exhausts are housed within the painted section of the rear bumper and comprised of a single oval-shaped tip per side, as opposed to the 2-per-side circular tips of the M3 which this model is primarily based upon. The wheels featured on this model bear a striking resemblance to Volk Racing GT30 or Volk Racing RE30 wheels.

The overall design of the car remains largely similar to its previous iteration, but the front end is largely dominated by the front intakes, with the central one adopting a small curvature on the lower side. The edges of the car have chrome curved housings with dual circular lamps. The greenhouse area remains similar, although the front seats are moved slightly backwards and the doors are a bit longer, resulting in a vehicle with ample room. The rear end received numerous changes in terms of details, with the tail lamps being larger, the boot having a lip above the license plate and the exhaust located within the rear end. A black portion can be seen below, housing two square reverse lamps.

The car is prominently painted in a primary colour, with the lower portions of the front and the sides, the rear-view mirrors and the retractable roof painted in a secondary colour. The stitches found in the interior matches with the primary colour. The rim design is shared with the Feltzer and the Fusilade, being identical to the "Organic Type D" sport wheels available in Los Santos Customs.

Performance

[edit | edit source]

Grand Theft Auto IV

[edit | edit source]

As a sport compact executive coupe, the Sentinel reaches a superb top speed, but not far from the fastest vehicles in the game. It has above-average acceleration, and reaches its top speed fairly quickly as well. The Sentinel's suspension is rather soft, and it tends to roll when going around tight bends at high speed; the rear of the car also tends to bounce about when travelling on uneven roads. Its handling is above average, but at high speeds it loses a lot of grip and easily spins out of control due to the lack of weight in the rear. But if controlled right, its speed and grip can be combined to produce almost-professional like drifts that can be used to slide into sharp turns and back alleyways to evade the police without difficulty. Nonetheless, it is arguably the best choice in the modern category in multiplayer racing.

The Sentinel is powered by a twin-cam, four-cylinder engine fitted with a turbocharger, coupled to a 5-speed gearbox in a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. Its engine sound is similar to vehicles such as the Sultan and the Chavos.

Grand Theft Auto V and Online

[edit | edit source]

The Sentinel received massive improvements, such as increases in top speed and acceleration, braking distance and gear shifting. Crash deformation is acceptable, and can take multiple crashes to even deform the front end. The engine is strangely exposed to gun-fire, taking the most damage from gun-fire, which is strange to say as it is completely covered. Crash deformation at higher speeds is high (quarter panels of the car may look to be "glitched" into the wheel wells if hit hard enough), and it is not hard with this car to make the wheels jam in crashes, but the car can withstand a surprising amount of frontal impacts without failing. The Sentinel is a decent car to use in online races and is even better in Free Mode sessions, thanks to its very smooth and precise driving which compensates for its (relatively) low acceleration compared to other cars.

Again, the Sentinel is powered by a twin-cam, four-cylinder engine fitted with a turbocharger, this time coupled to a 6-speed gearbox in a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. Its engine sound is similar to vehicles like the Tailgater and the FQ 2.

Stevie's Car Thefts Sentinel In Grand Theft Auto IV, a Sentinel is requested as part of Stevie's Car Thefts, appearing with a uniquely candy blue and black body colour. As a new Sentinel will respawn at the same spot until the player delivers one to S&M Auto Sales, the player can save one at their safehouse before delivering another.

Sentinel XS In Grand Theft Auto IV, a variant of the Sentinel badged "Sentinel XS" spawns with a performance hood, rear windscreen louvre and a large rear wing, giving the car an aggressive, sportier appearance. However, these body parts act as extra components on the regular Sentinel, and as such, this variant displays no other difference than the standard model. It is often driven by the Mafia.

Locations

[edit | edit source]

Sentinels are generally found throughout the business districts of all the cities; some can be seen driving in the suburbs and wealthy parts of town as well.

Grand Theft Auto IV

[edit | edit source]

"XS" configuration

  • The Sentinel "XS" will appear in all the places where the standard Sentinel does, but it is significantly rarer.
  • It appears more commonly if the player is driving a Sultan RS.
  • As it serves as a gang car for the Mafia, the Sentinel "XS" will often appear in Little Italy, Chinatown, and Westdyke.
  • It sometimes spawns on the stretch of road outside the safe house in Party Mode.

  • Hung Out to Dry – A Sentinel appears parked behind the Laundromat in Hove Beach during this mission.
  • Wrong is RightOleg Minkov uses a black Sentinel to meet his partner, after which he flees to Algonquin. The player can obtain the vehicle by shooting the target in the head, then after the mission passes, get in the car and save it as usual. This Sentinel has a unique secondary black colour and it can spawn with one of ten random pearlescent colors.
  • Actions Speak Louder than Words – A Sentinel is provided for the player to use at the start of the mission.
  • She's a Keeper – The Sentinel "XS" are used by the Ancelottis to chase down Niko Bellic as he transports the kidnapped Gracie Ancelotti. It is featured with one of nine random pearlescent colors.
  • Meltdown – A Sentinel is provided for the player to use at the start of the mission.
  • Out of Commission – Multiple Sentinels are used by the Pegorino Crime Family. These Sentinel have all the specific features of the Sentinels normally driven by the Italian Mafia, while also having hybrid exhausts (the civilian version and the gang version of the exhausts are overlapping on the model of the vehicle) along with two overlapping badges (the usual one and the one specific to the Sentinel XS) overlapping on the rear. It is featured with the aforementioned pearlescent colors from She's a Keeper. The same Sentinel from Wrong is Right is featured during the mission. Taking the vehicle will result in mission failure.
  • Stevie's Car Thefts – A Sentinel is one of the 30 vehicles requested by Stevie.

The Lost and Damned

[edit | edit source]
  • When the Blue Chips are Down – The CEO is being arrested near the trunk of a Sentinel. After she is released, it can be used as a means of escaping the law enforcement.
  • Phone Ho – It is used by a civilian to pick up a prostitute. It features a special white primary colour with black rims and one of all random pearlescent colors.

The Ballad of Gay Tony

[edit | edit source]
  • Not So Fast – A Sentinel will be provided for the player to use at the start of the mission.

Grand Theft Auto V

[edit | edit source]
  • Father/SonMichael and Franklin take Amanda's red Sentinel and use it to save Jimmy from the men who steal Michael's yacht. However, after Franklin jumps from the yacht and is caught in the Sentinel, the Sentinel's engine breaks down due to it being shot several times by the thieves. This then prompts the player to take the car to Los Santos Customs to repair it, which also introduces them to car modding.
  • Reuniting the Family – Amanda's red Sentinel can be seen parked outside Bean Machine.

Oversights

[edit | edit source]

Grand Theft Auto V

[edit | edit source]
    • If Franklin or Trevor drives a Sentinel stolen from a civilian to Michael's house, Michael will still text them as though it was Amanda's Sentinel.
  • If the player takes Amanda's Sentinel and then calls someone to hang out, it will be locked when dropping them off. It is possible to fix this by switching to another character then switching back to the first one.
  • After the 1.10 update, both the Sentinel and its XS variant have been reclassed to a "Sports" car, instead of its former "Coupes" category. The reason for the sudden category change is unknown and somewhat inaccurate due to the fact that it is a compact executive coupe rather than a sports car. However, this was reverted back to the "Coupes" category, along with all of Übermacht's vehicles, in the 1.11 update.

Trivia

[edit | edit source]
  • The vehicle's name is likely a reference to being a stereotypical vehicle for wealthy people, bodyguards and gangsters.
  • As with other Übermacht vehicles, the Sentinel's name is a reference to The Matrix franchise, in this case being a reference to Sentinels, a race of autonomous machine at war with humans.
