Sword of Night and Flame is a Straight Sword in Elden Ring. The Sword of Night and Flame scales primarily with StrengthDexterity, Intelligence, and Faith and has a powerful Unique Skill, Night-and-Flame Stance, which allows the user to hold the sword level and follow up with a normal attack to cast the Comet Azur sorcery or a strong attack to sweep forward with a burst of flame causing Fire Damage.

Storied sword and treasure of Caria Manor.
One of the legendary armaments.

Astrologers, who preceded the sorcerers, established themselves in mountaintops that nearly touched the sky, and considered the Fire Giants their neighbors.

Sword of Night and Flame Location in Elden Ring

The Sword of Night and Flame weapon can be found in Caria Manor in a locked room behind the gardens in the east side of the manor.

Begin at the Manor Lower Level site of grace and proceed east across the rooftops, being wary of any spirit soldiers that may appear. From the first intersection, head north and continue down the pathway until the next junction is reached.

At this next junction, face north and continue for a few steps.

sword of night and flame 2 location wiki elden ring

Looking down over the edge of the walkway (around halfway through to the next junction), you should see a platform containing a ladder. This is your goal -- see image below. You can jump from the walkway down onto the upper roof, then down again to reach the platform where the ladder is.

Once you've descended the ladder, there will be a chest containing the sword next to a chair near the center of the room.

Elden Ring Sword of Night and Flame Notes & Tips

  • Weapon SkillNight-and-Flame Stance
  • This weapon cannot be infused with Ashes of War
  • Can't be enchanted with Magic nor boosted by Consumables.
  • Sword of Night and Flame can be upgraded by using Somber Smithing Stones.
  • This weapon utilizes Thrusting R2s when one-handed, and Slashing R2s when two-handed.  Due to the very low STR scaling, and the superior thrusting moveset, one-handing this weapon is advised in most scenarios
  • The Comet (L2+R1) weapon skill does not count as a sorcery but does inflict magic damage; its damage is affected by the INT portion of the weapon's scaling and weapon level. The night beam is also buffed by the Spellblade Set.
  • The Flame Burst (L2+R2) weapon skill is affected by the FTH portion of the weapon scaling and weapon level.
  • Although damage from the two weapon art attacks scale with INT or FTH, they do so at a relatively low level, and are still very effective even at minimum stat requirements.
  • Sell Value:  er runes 13 1000
  • Due to its inherently high FP cost, it's highly recommended to either have high Mind or the Carian Filigreed Crest.
  • One of the few weapons that can make good use of the Greathood, a unique piece of armor that provides +2 to INT and FTH.
  • When utilized with a high Intelligence build, even the damage from the L2+R1 can be substantial. However, the L2+R2 suffers from a long cast time and is most useful when sneaking up on large packs of enemies.
  • The Confessor starting class starts with exactly 12 Strength and 12 Dexterity, which already meets the minimum Strength and Dexterity requirements of the weapon, allowing one to only invest on Intelligence and Faith for the weapon with the said class.
  • The Astrologer starting class starts with 8 Strength and 12 Dexterity, which meets the Dexterity requirements of the weapon. While requiring 4 more Strength to meet the Strength requirement, can also be used for creating a dedicated SoNaF build without any excessive Strength or Dexterity stat.
  • One of the 9 Legendary Armaments.
  • NOTE: As of Patch 1.08Straight Swords poise damage has been reduced only on PVP.
  • NOTE: As of Patch 1.09, the scaling values of this weapon were changed. Please refer to the Upgrades Table of this weapon below. Additionally, the running attack speed, first attack speed, and speed of guard counter of straight swords has increased. The attack recovery time has also decreased.
  • NOTE: Patch 1.13 Increased poise damage of dual wield attacks of all Straight Swords (in PVP)

When I was hearing "SONAF", I thought it was another game of those animatronics trying to stuff you in their fursuit.

      But no...

It was all about this weapon...

      • Anonymous

The damage on the AoW increases by a total of 2.4% from 80 to 99 in the scaling stat so definitely not worth levelling past 80, if it wasn't obvious already.

        • Anonymous

Used this weapon on my Golden Order build until I got Rellana's Swords and it didn't disappoint. Did surprisingly good melee damage in spite of the split AR, perfectly serviceable for melee with golden dorito shield- the 1hr2 pokes feel good. It's fun to use an oil jar before Fire r2, and 25 FTH opens up Vow and whatever support incantations you like. Very FP hungry though so you'll have to put some points in Mind.

          • Anonymous

Sure, there may be better swords for the kind of stat investment needed to use this one. But if there's one thing I learned from D&D, it's that the "rule of cool" is a powerful force to contend with. An ash of war that can shoot a multi-hit beam of magic OR a wide-sweeping arc of flame, which not only gives you options depending on the type of encounter, but are also pretty strong spells in their own right?
            Yeah, that's pretty damn cool.

            • Anonymous

L2 stick with insane investment for no substance and no purpose since spells exist and are more fp efficient, if youre going int/fth and need a melee weapon just upgrade something else and infuse it with your highest scaling attribute, stat scaling doesnt matter that much till endgame anyway, you get most of your damage from weapon upgrades until then.

              • Anonymous

Don't listen to 28 jan below me they don't know what they're talking about, blasphemous blade, noobveil, etc, all have faster long range more damaging aow with better utility and fp cost, MUCH better base movesets and r1/r2 damage, better poise damage, and sooner access to their higher tier spells, and those spells will cover damage resistances anyway. This weapon doesn't have a niche aside from being your only choice for a severely gimped build type for the entire game.

Also, int/fth is the most boring early game build you'll ever play, your spell adjust is bad for both catalysts until you run into the golden order seal, look at the spell adjust, and realize this is really just an incantation build that spams discus of light and has a decorative l2 stick in its right hand until you get the staff of the great beyond in the dlc, in which case congratulations, you can now shoot all colours of the rainbow with mediocre damage, and combo spells that are worse than pure int or faith combos, and your r1 damage is even worse than before because of how split damage works so youre either pressing the projectile button or mashing L2 from a safe distance.

                • Anonymous

Long, long gone are the days when this would play the game for you, and we're all better for it, because in their place is an incredibly solid piece of Int/Fth kit that will retain use well into late levels. At far range your spells will do the heavy lifting, things like Ancient Death Rancor or Discus of Light, as expected for a magic build. But when the boss closes the distance, the Weapon Art is a fantastic mid range source of burst damage, and since it's a stance it'll be very rare that an opponent has strong resistance to both damage types at your disposal. At melee range, the charged strong attacks do good stance damage and allow for pretty easy poise breaks, letting you get in a critical, back off to a safer distance, or both. I often found myself closing the distance myself, however, just because the Weapon Art damage was that enticing. It's probably not the absolute best FP cost to damage trade (I'm not going to look over the requisite spreadsheets to find what is) but you'd be hard pressed to find an option that hits as hard and travels as far. Some spells will have bigger booms or longer ranges, but never at the same time. Well worth giving a spin when you finally try out that Int/Fth build you've been thinking looks interesting.

                  • Anonymous

its regular attack damage is bad all the way up to level 150 and its l2s have slower startup and recovery than other l2s and deal less damage for more fp cost, even with talisman stacking for l2 damage other weapons do it better. The only reason you use this is to larp as an omnimage with staff of the great beyond, when pure faith already gets access to every damage type and status with way better damage at lower levels except pure magic and bleed, which you can get with 5 points into arcane for the magic dragonbreath and bloodflame spells anyway.

                    • Anonymous

You'll do far better with a broadsword and Storm Blade no matter how much you wish otherwise. I love the sword but the FP cost is too peckin high.

                      • Anonymous

Why is it so difficult for pveers to admit when a weapon sucks? Complain complain complain about pvpers getting weapons that oneshot the entire game to two shot it instead but when anyone points out a weapon or build type is genuinly mediocre compared to everything else? Something something tryhard something something pve game something something everything is viable and pvp is unholy rahhhh. God forbid people ask a legendary weapon and its build type be in a similar ballpark of power progression with the rest.

                        I miss my dark infusion.

                        • Anonymous

Needed from it's former greatness at the dawn of time but still useful. That flame attack does solid damage with the right supports.

                          • Anonymous

Reminder that you're not locked to a single weapon just cause you went int-faith. Elemental damage gets the 80% or more of its returns at 50 int or faith, so if you go 50-50 first thing you unlock the staff of the great beyond and this sword, then you can just keep pumping dex-strength to meet requirements for some cool weapons like fire knight greatsword, gazing finger and basically all magic+flame/sacred infused weapons in the game. Most of ur weapons will only scale with either one but the amount of variety you'll have will be unmatched at a lower level than a pure stat one. Also can cast incantations only with golden order seal at a very strong level at 50-50 int/fai. If you're not a sweaty min-maxing, rakshasa wearing, buff stacking nerd then this type of build is for you.

                            • Anonymous

You will get pretty bored of this being your only weapon for that INT / FAI character you've been wanting to do but putting off for so long. Regardless, it's still an incredibly strong weapon with a very relevant ash.

                              • Anonymous

I have 31 int and 50 faith, and use this comfortably along golden order seal. I don't use the beam much but it looks good with brass shield and the flame hits hard. You can do the opposite if you prefer the beam, and the seal still has the same scaling of 314, 345 if casting golden order spells. This is just for when you don't have many levels though, this swords true power unlocks when you have 50+ in both, you'll be able to use rellana's twinblades and basically all sorceries + incantations with golden order seal/staff of the great beyond.

I know they nerfed it long ago but it's still pretty good if you build well around it. The flame special attack does good damage.

                                  • Anonymous

Mid weapon at best despite how people hype it, much of it left over from its original state pre-nerfs. The lack of hyper armor and overall low damage compared to either sorceries or incantations you could be using for the stat investment, or even other more basic weapons, makes it a novelty weapon at best. By the time you have the full investment stats and equipment to bring out any real damage from this its outclassed by all the potential weapons and spells you could be using instead. Do yourself a favor and don't try to build into this weapon on a first game run. Play with it if you want on new game+ but don't expect anything amazing. You will cripple yourself trying to use it on a first run because there are so many other better options...this weapon is for people who want to play a particular style despite its weaknesses but it mostly attracts people who want something strong or op to play and lets them down hard, half of them not even realizing it until they play something else.

                                    • Anonymous

I'm running this Sword with a shield in my offhand, switched with a seal for Incantations-
The shield doesn't have an ash of war- its for parries and counters (Banished Knight shield)

Wearing the unaltered Banished Knight chest, gauntlets with Tragoths greaves.

Yes I need high endurance for this build but it pairs well with the endurance cost for using a shield- plus the skills of the sword need a moderate amount put into endurance to be feasible.
                                      45 Vigor
                                      30 Faith
                                      20 Mind
                                      30 Intelligence
                                      30 Strength
                                      25 Dexterity

I'm a noob though- but the attack animations and general playstyle of this sword makes it fun to use.

I wish it was long. Like real long. But still had the same moveset. Like gargoyle axe from dark souls, that thing is pretty big but keeps the normal axe moveset. Would've been cool.

I don't mind the gaudy design; this is a legendary antique weapon that was likely forged by the giants to commemorate their kinship with the astrologers. It's GRRM mary sue sword and it deserves to look special.

The only problem is that the entire game is built upon making single damage type and stat scaling on weapons the best so putting 3x the amount of levels into your weapon to deal just as much damage is tragic. They should remove defenses on enemies from the game.

Now that the sword buffs itself with either magic or fire in Nightreign whenever you use its ash I want that for base Elden Ring.

I always thought this weapon was just overhyped, then I did a golden order build run and finally used this. I swear it's insane how damaging this weapon is. At like 20/20/60/40 you are one shotting most mob enemies with a single R1.

Something I don't see mentioned often about this weapon is that is an amazing crit weapon. Since crits ignore defense, the high triple split AR really shines. On my brand new int faith character with a +3 sonaf the regular weapon swings hit in the 200s but crits are around 800 damage.

sword of day and ice would probably have been better. it would have the frostbite status and cool light powers...

I like so many commenters here assumed the triple split damage was a huge deal, but truthfully, that's just the damage straight swords do in this game. If you're used to swinging a bigger weapon and chunking health bars, you'll be disappointed by the light attacks. So if you can get over that, you'll realize the stright sword moveset with its fast attacks and poking heavies is quite versatile, and the flame swoosh part of the weapon skill is just the nuts. Buff it with Alexander's Shard, Rellanna's Cameo, FGMS, Flame Tear... you will be shocked in PvE how much damage it does and in PvP how often you catch people when you and they assume it missed.

I love this weapon in action but my god is it ugly. It has so many colors that blend together into a brownish sludge, it has so many small holes and ornaments that just get smudged together when you look at it, and the two "crossguards" look like they would snap off with the lightest touch and one of them has a very unappealing L shape. Overall a very busy and chaotic design that makes it seem like a mish mash of a bunch of different elements that don't fit together.

The sword of night and flame was the only reason why I made it through my first playthrough. Killed the Elden Beast when nothing else could.

                                                              My guiding light...

... Anyway I like how it's linked to an actual spell in the Comet use of the art of war, but to my knowledge there's no linked spell to the swath of fire. Maybe I just haven't used the spell associated?

                                                              • Anonymous

if you're going to make a sword triple split damage, quad scaling with 12/12/24/24 requirements it should be the longest and hardest hitting sword in its class, no compromises. Instead this thing is short with doo doo damage, only usable as a L2 stick. Terrible design!!!!

                                                                • Anonymous

I'm just back for a 4th thematic playthrough and it's interesting to see how many new players are discovering these weapons lol

                                                                  • Anonymous

My favorite use for this weapon is to power stance two of them in ng+ with the fire and magic scorpion charms equiped. It's probably less than optimal but it is fun. I have loved this weapon since the first time I heard of it and got my hands on it. I wish rellana's twin blades were at least close to as good as this weapon.

                                                                    • Anonymous

It seems like the beam can deal double damage to certain large enemies if you line it up so it hits two separate parts of their body. For example, hitting both of a Golem’s legs.

                                                                      • Anonymous

Considering this and rellana twin blades are quiet similar, I will list the weapon art strengths for both:
night and flame comet: high damage but long animation, better to use when bosses have noticeable openings
moon and fire light beams: faster to use and okay stance damage but needs to do the entire combo to compare to comet, useful when bosses give short openings
night and flame flame arc: damage can be devastating, and is easier to land in my eyes, I think this one shines in bosses
moon and fire fire spins: decent damage and stance damage(especially against giant enemies), its most useful to fend of ganks in exploration
Of course, feel free to carry both of them ;)

                                                                        • Anonymous

Best use for Sonaf is to get 25 faith for golden vow and some of the damage negation buff. Then all in Int and use sorcery. At very high level you can invest in faith again. But Int seem to be more beneficial early on.

                                                                          • What an overpowered weapon. For Scadutree DLC, I build my Tarnished around the Fire side of this sword and it will burn most bosses to crisp. I defeat Dancing Lion, Sunflower boss, the bug lady boss, and Commander Gaiusin a few swings. This weapon is even good enough for Messmer.

                                                                            • Anonymous

Fire scorpion charm + Rellanas Cameo + Shard of Alexander + Fire tear+ Flame, grant me strength+ Golden vow + oil pot makes L2+R2 a god damn nuke

                                                                              • My little bro quit Minecraft because it was "too hard". He started playing this with this sword and just beat the game. They need to patch these bs weapons out

                                                                                • Anonymous

I went into the DLC with it. At the same time, 95% of the Mog kills were made by the disk of light. Well, the damage is not impressive at all, plus due to the pumping of two characteristics, the build lags very much behind the mage in DPS. In my opinion, the most effective weapon of the mage, with a minimum of headaches, is death poker.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

41/41 int/faith on +10 and your hitting close to 700 damage before any buffs.

Off-hand the Golden Epitaph so you can use its buff for additional 25 holy + 10% all damage types ( 21 physical + 13 magic + 13 fire)

Buff with Flame Grant Me Strength for extra 20% physical (42 physical damage) and 20% fire damage (26 fire)

Top it off with 10% damage at max health and your hitting around 1k damage on just this badboy alone.

Golden Epitaph +9 itself hits for close to 600 without buffs. Close to 800 with the listed buffs.

With this combo even though your hitting 4 different defensive types (physical, magic, fire and holy) you'll still be smacking the average foe for close to 1k damage. Unleash the 4-hit combo with your paired straight swords and obliterate the enemy and then annihilate them even faster using the rotten winged sword insignia.

                                                                                    • This is basically the magical and much cooler version of standard Square off ash of war.
Probably the biggest downside to this ash of war outside of it's somewhat slow speed is the very high fp costs.
For that reason I would recommend investing into mind stat, in order to be able to use this weapon to the fullest.

                                                                                      • Anonymous

i dont understand why people complain about the lack of weapons on an int/faith bulid. this rellana twin blades, golden order seal staff of the great beyond and prince of death staff are all amazing and these are not all you have. you can use any int or faith weapon, they may not scale with int and faith but they scale with either one or the other. ive currently been running beyond staff with messmers spear and cold milady and it works wonderful. with sats in int faith and a bit of investment in strength or dex you get some wonderful weapons to pair with your staff. for example moonveil, wing of astel death poker, radahn sword lord, falling beast jawe, meesmers spear, fire knight gs, sared relic, blas blade, i could keep going int faith in my opionion is the best bulid that covers everything.

                                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                                          • Anonymous

The starting damage and aoe on the fire attack is fantastic. The mini comet azur suffers from no tracking and generally does worse damage in pve due to flat damage defense, but the knockdown on smaller enemies is very useful

                                                                                            • Anonymous

The flame attack is great at preventing ambushes when you walk into a new room. Stand right in the doorway, face directly forward, and fire. The flame will hit the potential ambushers before they even know you’re there.

                                                                                              • Anonymous

That 1H Heavy where you thrust forward always seems to target the space under your opponent's left armpit when you're locked on.

                                                                                                • Anonymous

Wish the magic weapon art on Rellana's twin blades was halfway decent.

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

was running a moonveil build , got this and and respeced, but honestly its just to damn slow, the ash of war animation takes forever and you have to split your stats, early on its just easier to stick with moonveil because then you can just focus on int and vigor instead of int, vigor and faith.
the ashes does seem to out damage moonveils ashes of war a bit (just the ranged component), but moonveil is faster to perform its ash of war and seems just a safer weapon with more utility, i will revisit this weapon post level 100 but as it stands at level 60 this weapon just seems a death sentence the moment you press L2 from my experience

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

A golden sword with a colored glass blade that shoots lasers and bathes the area in flames? Hell yea

                                                                                                          • Anonymous

You can use this with staff of the great beyond if you leveled faith and int to cast incantations and sorceries more easily. Eg. Maybe you're against elden beast and it resists elemental damage so you start casting pest threads at it instead and can cast holy dmg negation without switching to a seal. Or do the same thing to plastic duck sax.

                                                                                                            • Anonymous

I've this big sneaking impression that Ranni and her mom were swordswomen in their prime, simply because their family magic literally revolves around swords, with the Lazuli Sorcerers outright turning their staves into swords through study of Carian Sorcery.

                                                                                                              • Anonymous

Haven't played around with this in the DLC yet but I used this for my 3rd playthrough about a year after launch AFTER this got "nerfed". It's still a very good weapon that can dish out a lot of damage, notably the Flame Stance which I think is underrated as a fair amount of bosses have a fire weakness. And when you consider that INT/FTH builds got new weapons, spells and talismans, this is a great weapon to go through the game with.

Shadow of the Erdtree added a bunch of new talismans that increase Skill/AoW damage, and they ALL stack with each other. Shard of Alexander, Rellana’s Cameo and Blade of Mercy is a 58% damage buff. All you need to do is get a crit, then hold the Night-and-Flame stance for two seconds,

as another person mentioned on the rykards rancor page, in pvp, if you combine it with rykards, the flame animation for the ash of war for this weapon is easily masked, combine that with how rykard can force a bunch of distracted rolls, and you have a decent chance of catching people with the flame ash of war. rellanas cameo and the jar talisman work on this, and with buffs and with 70~ faith, the fire sweep almost one shots people. plus they're both buffed by fire buffs. im nowhere near good at this game, but with rykards and the fire ash of war, i have been able to beat several gank squads i should have no business beating.
