Elden Ring Bloodhound's Fang Notes & Tips

  • Weapon Skill: Bloodhound's Finesse
  • This weapon cannot be infused with Ashes of War
  • This weapon can be enchanted with Magic or buffed by Consumables
  • Bloodhound's Fang can be upgraded by using Somber Smithing Stones.
  • Sell Value:  er runes 13 500
  • NOTE: As of Patch 1.09, the scaling values of this weapon were changed. Please refer to the Upgrades Table of this weapon below. Additionally, speed, range, recovery time and guard counter speed of Curved Greatsword weapons has increased.
  • Some jumping attacks of the Bloodhound's Fang have higher motion values compared to the rest of its class. 1h Jumping R1, 1h Jumping R2, 2h Jumping R1 and 2h Jumping R2 are all affected.
    • The motion values of the Bloodhound's Fang are 118, 142, 128 and 151 respectively, compared to the regular Curved Greatsword motion values of 107, 127, 112 and 132.
    • The 'Motion Value' of an attack is the damage it does, expressed as a % of the weapon's Attack Value. So, a 2h Jumping R2 will do 151% of the base damage of the sword. Note that this might not reflect true damage values, as it does not account from damage reduction through enemy defense, and other similar effects.

the fact you can get this to +6 before Margit is mildly disgusting, Margit certainly was NOT expecting that kind of heat.

Why do every noobs I invade use this weapon, it's not even good in pvp, be more original please, I'm tired of fighting Kévin again and again.

        • Anonymous

this is probably not the place to ask about this, but does anyone know if this is the ONLY infusable special weapon?

          • Anonymous

Noobs praising the AR when it is the free boss stagger/stance breaking on demand with the skill while having I-frames that carries this weapon.

            • Anonymous

As the time passed, I started hating this weapon.
Not for the usual reasons, but because I learned more about it, so many details and advantages concentrated in 1 single weapon.
I don't wish for it to be less, I wished the same love and effort was shared on other weapons, that could encourage other playstyles.

              • Anonymous

One of the best weapons in the game, recommended for beginners in souls games, and veterans like me not so gud, and it is available quite early in the game. That's the one I used to kill Malenia in my first playthrough, when she was the hardest boss ever.

when i wield this weapon brother im flying!!! yall better watch out this thing making me wild!!!!!! crazy op weapon someone stop this beast i beg!!!!!!!!! AAAA

I used this for some of my first playthrough but fairly quickly went back to muh dual straight swords, and didn't touch it for about 3000 hours. Now I'm doing a relatively casual run instead of the usual "run around gathering stuff for 90 minutes" video game, and am revisiting this weapon. I gotta say fellas, sometimes it's nice to just do a lot of damage.

                      This sword is great.
But the community, especially the YouTube guide makers, have ruined it. I honestly can’t stand seeing this weapon anymore. Every little newbie runs around with it without even remotely understanding how to use the L2 properly.

Whenever I see a video of a Tarnished using this sword, something inside me cringes. It genuinely disgusts me.

                      • Anonymous

This weapon got me through Stormveil my first playthrough, which was enough of a carrot on a stick to incentivize me to get good at this game.
                        10/10

The most undeservedly hated weapon in the entire game.
You can straight up ignore this weapon and annihilate everything with magic
You can straight up ignore this weapon and annihilate everything with holy blackflame claymore

You can straight up ignore this weapon and have do exactly the same with any other bleed weapon
Hell, you can abuse whole game with pots, perfume, physick and literally any weapon, BECAUSE THIS GAME IS EASY
You think it was supposed to be hard only because you suffered with your shitty build

Str heavy greatswords crybabies suffering literally in every Fromsoftware game, and they want you to do the same lol

For all intents and purposes the DS1 Zweihander of this game. Can be acquired not even 5 minutes in, fully loaded dumptruck levels of damage even unupgraded, great moveset with one of the best unique attacks in the game and relatively lenient stat requirements for most melee-focused starting classes.

This bad boy not is one of the few weapons that will work on any flavor of dex build you can have. Pure dex? Still good AR. Dex/str? Perfect for it, insane damage at higher levels, higher than most colossals.

Don't sleep on casting stats either; I'm rocking a strange build with 54 str 45 dex and 50 int, I mostly use cold weapons but the fang still finds a place, almost 800 ar then buff with the cool scholar's armament. This weapon is just awesome, can't go wrong with it :)

The "I saw a guide and streamers say this weapon is amazing so I will use it" weapon.
Uninteresting, hideous looking, terrible for fashion, overrated.
                                Yet another L2 spammer crutch

This weapon is great for people who only want to use one weapon, but you'll ultimately narrow down your build to quality, whose infusion is awful in this game.

Easily on the list for the Top 10 Best FromSoft Weapons of All Time. Acquired extremely early, easily upgraded, abnormally high AR, simple scaling with no nonsense. Versatile moveset, strong weapon art, innate Bleed status, buffable by spells and resins (Bloodflame Blade is absurd), tied for second longest reach in its class, highest jumping MVs in its class... It can do it all.

WARNING: While the one-handed and two-handed jumping attacks have higher motion values, the dual-wielding jump attack is the same as every other curved greatsword. two 600 AR bloodhound's fangs will deal the same jumping L1 damage as two 600 AR omen cleavers.

This weapon was what carried me through my first playthrough. I've since moved on to other weapons and builds, but BHF will always hold a place in my heart lol

This weapon is fine, I guess. The way people drool over/defend it, you'd think it would have 1. great damage (it's just ok, about average for a dex CGS) 2. a great ash of war (pretty bad!) or 3. a good damage type (slash is the worst physical damage type.) Sure, it's buffable; you can invest a few points in faith and arcane for Bloodflame Blade and make it deal good bleed damage instead of just ok. It's got the CGS moveset, which is good. It uses somber stones to upgrade, which is a benefit early on, before you know how to rush smithing stones. Take it all together and you've got a 60th percentile weapon. I'm glad you all like using it so much.

I love when low level invaders use this. They get parried on reaction. Keep spamming bloodhound's finnese. Eventually they'll learn.

You should absolutely use the follow up on the Ash of War against invaders, it is super duper unpredictable and hits really hard
                                              -Sincerely, a parry enthusiast

Ahh my favorite weapon. So potent, versatile and reliable throughout the game and even in DLC. Never disappoints. The only reason I am not using it in my DLC playthrough is because I am bored LOL. I do bring it back against some tough bosses though and it finishes the job LOL.

Ah yes the absolute definition of a noob casual and beginner in Elden Ring and its almost always with Radahns armor its insane

I’m trying this weapon out for the first time… and it’s kind of boring? It’s very strong and doesn’t really have any obvious weaknesses that you need to creatively work around. So it just unceremoniously bulldozes everything. Given its location, it seems like it’s explicitly intended as a newb weapon, not that that’s a bad thing. Wish I’d used it as a newb.

                                                    • Anonymous

Reminder that the fang has innately enhanced jump attacks (only a single fang, not dual wield) so you can stack claw talisman very early on to hit probably harder, and faster, than the weapon skill. You can make a nasty bloodhound build with the (quality infusion) bloodhound claws and the fang, both have great jump attacks (pierce damage and shield-pierce on the claws). 50 str 55 dex by endgame. Raptor of the mists on bloodhound claws to max out aura

No anon, it is not a bad weapon because it's overused, nor because you got your cheeks clapped by someone using it in PVP. It is also not a "noob trap" like Ds1's Drake Sword.

First of this sword is the GOAT.
I've used it in my first game and it was awesome.
Since like 2 months ago I've started cosplaying different stuff in game. Started with zwainhander then partisan & shield than miquella knight sword then ordovis and finally I decide to cosplay the bloodhound knight and man HOLY F! I'm literally skipping boss mechanics cuz of the amazing dmg this weapon is dealing it's just insane.

I once saw a Fia's player spirit using this greatsword with the blackflame blade incantation, it wasn't a tough fight but the mere idea of this combo legit gave me brain damage.

                                                                • Anonymous

Still one of my favorite weapons since I've started this game 2y ago. I remember playing seamless with bro and he said he picked up something new, a bit later I see him dodging in the air like he's a freakin ninja or some sht.

Recently picked it up again in a new playthrough, and learned that u don't need str for it to perform well. I'm going for confessor dex-fai, and has like 760 AR at 70 dex 18 str which means it's great for any dex build.

If ur looking for movements like the fang, there is the bloody helice with its skill, and the beast claws with both skills. Additionally, beast claws have a retreating move like the Fang, hold r2 and release + press dodge move. Sorry for long text but
                                                                  Tldr: og Fang forever goated

                                                                  • Anonymous

EASLY the best weapon in the game. Anyoine saying otherwise i respect you but its bit delusional. This Sword:
                                                                    1. Is obtained in 30 min of rational gameplay, if you rush it then 3-5min probably, and it comes with immidete +1 stone.
                                                                    2. It has very high unsplitted damage which is always good.
                                                                    3. Amazing speed/reach combination and insane running R2.
                                                                    4. Versatile Skill defensively and offensively.
                                                                    5. Bleed effect.
                                                                    6. Finally it has excellent DEX scaling but also not bad if you want go for STR.
To sums things up Bloodhound's Fang is statistically in TOP5 weapon with highest unsplitted damage (if you consider speed and bleed then its probably TOP1), considering availibility from the get go it is Easly THE BEST weapon in Elden Ring.

                                                                    • Anonymous

There are better options later on, but it's strong throughout the entire game. Even speedruns use it because of how early it's avalaible, so it's definitely more than a "noob weapon."

                                                                      • Anonymous

Best beginner weapon in the game. Its strong, unusually so, it just does better damage than other standard weapons you’ll find around that time. Its not super fast, not super slow, somewhere in the middle. It has no gimmick, its one of the best weapons yeah but its not creating giant aoes that instantly stagger, inflict every status and fully heal you, its just a unique aow with standard sword swings albeit an I Frame dash, so it doesn’t just win the game on its own.

But the best part at least for beginners is the Jump Attack bonus. This teaches new players just how strong Jump attacking is, which is great for series vets and newbies, since the DS games don’t have Jump attacks in the way ER does. Seeing it dish out such high numbers and staggering enemies so quickly conditions the player to make full use of jump attacks. My first run I used the Estoc, which has a really lame feeling Jump attack and I didn’t even try jump attacking until my second playthrough where I used this beast, and honestly I wish I started with this.

                                                                        • Anonymous

Despite there being hundreds of different weapons in this game, it feels like there's a 50% chance when watching any Youtuber or Streamer's playthrough they'll be using Bloodhound's Fang. I don't blame them though, this game has a rampant backseating problem, if you play this game there will always be someone in the chat or comments telling you to use this weapon, it's really quite a shame you don't get to see more unique and creative builds

                                                                          • Anonymous

During my first playthrough whenever I ran into a wall with my fashion build I would switch back to this and just kill the damn thing - whatever it was. It's just such a feel-good weapon. Though I don't think I actually used the aow in a fight... ever. If you could swap the AOW on this thing... damn!
Just let me dream for a second...

                                                                            • Anonymous

I found this on my first playthrough and decided to use it because it looked cool. For a while I genuinely thought Elden Ring was just super easy.

                                                                              • Anonymous

Jokes and cries aside, this weapon is actually very nice early on.

                                                                                It's guaranteed to acquire.

Somewhat big requirements, but having good Dex and two-handling it with 12 Str is all what you need.

                                                                                Is super long.

Is good at damage, and deals Bleed.

You can build lots of Bleed Greeses if you're at Forth Haight.

Can still buff with other greeses.

Has great potency if akimbo with Dismounter if you got it from a drop.

It's really good early in the game.

It's just a bit sad that it loses a lot of potency after you get other weapons tho

                                                                                • Anonymous

I use it and keep using it because it's reliable and consistent. It doesn't have a fiddly swing arc. It does solid damage with each hit so you don't have to stress over getting every hit in a series in for it to do its job. The Ash of War hits consistently even without locking and gets you out of the way of potential enemy punishment. The bleed is a bonus, and it doesn't suffer from much of the damage offset that usually comes with bleed. It's not the most amazing weapon in the game, it's just a really consistent workhorse that can function well in most combat scenarios.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

800 AR at 54 str 60 dex isn't even special. Most curved greatswords get that much with similar level investment. Warped axe gets 800 AR at 99 str and attacks like 50% faster

                                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                                          og Fang forever goated.

                                                                                          • Anonymous

The Exile Greatsword of Elden Ring. It's a Curved Greatsword that hits really hard (the highest damage within it's weapon class) and is obtainable from defeating a challenging foe relatively early in the game. In DS3, after going through the Undead Settlement you obtain it around midway through the Farron Woods from defeating the Exile Swordsman near the ladder leading to the poisonous swamp, whereas in Elden Ring you get this from defeating the Bloodhound Knight in the gaol near the bridge to Weeping Peninsula which depending on intended progression would be after exploring Stormhill and failing to defeat Margit, then going to explore south east to gain Runes, Golden Seeds, Sacred Tears, etc.

                                                                                            • Anonymous

Exalted Flesh + Uplifting Aromatic + Raptor's Black Feathers/Gravebird's Blackquill Armor + Claw Talisman + Two-Handed Sword Talisman on a Two-Handed Jumping Heavy Attack (which for this weapon has a higher motion value of x1.51 compared to other Curved Greatswords which are x1.32) against an enemy player with 150 Physical Defense and 30% Physical Negation will do ~1197 damage when you have 44 Strength and 57 Dexterity, and a follow up Two-Handed Standing Light Attack if it connects will deal ~693 damage for a total of 1890, just barely not enough to kill a player with 1900 health from having 60 Vigor. This is why you level Vigor, people.

                                                                                              • Anonymous

Most players will just spam the skill, a smaller portion will spam the light attack chain with the occasional skill usage because it's a Curved Greatsword, and the smallest portion use this skillfully like any other Curved Greatsword, one which exchanges the Ash of War (Bloodhound's Finesse is very hard to use in a duel, so it's kind of like not even having an Ash of War kind of like Sacred Order on the Treespear) for innate Bleed and buff-ability with absurd Physical damage scaling. Put Bloodflame Blade or Drawstring Blood Grease on this thing, 90+ Bleed for no Arcane investment is nuts for how much damage this can do on a Quality build. Think of any other weapon where instead of stopping at 54 Strength or 80 Dexterity, you can start dumping points into the other stat to get even more damage past the point where most any other weapon will start seeing massive diminishing returns. It's Quality if it was an actually good Infusion, better scaling than most Refined weapons had in DS3 which was the reason why Quality was so nerfed in this game by comparison.

                                                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

So as absolutely a complete and total noob to the game, I popped on to try to figure out stance damage. The distain for using this weapon is pretty hilarious. Just to give you an idea of how at least one real noob plays the game:

                                                                                                    1) Battle axe for mobs.
                                                                                                    2) Great axe for bosses and armored.
                                                                                                    3) Whip for the obnoxious flying critters. If they took out every bird in the game, I would not complain.
                                                                                                    4) Fang for my horse and against scaled critters for the bleed damage; good combination of range and speed. I’ve never once used the AoW.
                                                                                                    5) Warrior armor with the wolf helm because it looks so freaking cool.

Also tried the Longsworn Greatsword, the dagger you get from that red finger (thank you friendly NPC!), the forked axe, and crossbows (learned I hate ranged in this game). I use fire pots galore with a mix of shame and resignation. I’m so non-optimized at the moment, it’s not even funny, I just love trying out all the different weapons.

Still having a total blast. This is the escapism I need.

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

Some people call the ones who use this weapon as "kevins", that means "normal person who just started the game. They need to differentiate these guys from themselves (they believe they're sigmas).

Useless info aside, this weapon is great and can carry you through the game. I've used it early on, hundreds of hours ago. It has a hidden jump attack bonus. So two-hand it, use the skill when you need some finesse, use jumping light attacks when you need speed, jumping heavy only when the opening is big enough to allow recovery. The skill has two parts: the first is the evasion maneuver - but if u press heavy attack right after, you'll teleport & slash at ur enemy.

If u get invaded, be careful about shields. Jumping attacks can't be parried, jumping heavy u risk a backstab, only use jumping light.

This weapon pairs well with zamor curved sword; this for single targets, zamor for when u get swarmed by mobs.

Another fun way to play this is going full bloodhound with the claws infused with bloodhound step.

This weapon doesn't work well against rock or steel enemies (miners, imps...) so keep something like a great-hammer to deal with them.

Best talismans for this weapon are: two handed sword talisman, shard of alexander, claw talisman and the usual utility ones like dragoncrest, crimson seed etc.

GL and have fun, the fang will be a worthy companion in your journey

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

i hate its aow. after i hit, it sends me far back from the enemy, so if it's staggered, i have to run up to it. i might not make it in time. i have to run forward after every aow to attack it again, i hate how it puts me out of range every time.

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

What I like about this weapon is the skill ceiling. Obviously, this weapon is easy to use and could be acquired early, so people with lower skill levels could cruise through the game just fine. And when a player starts getting better, with more experience and time, they start completely ignoring the weapon art, as the base curved greatsword moveset is bonkers when you know how to use it. With already high enough base damage to rival the other CGS, the bleed is simply just the cherry on top. It is a good weapon for both noob and pro players alike.

Started with III, then did the other 2 and Demon's Souls. He finished ER a few days ago, including DLC. Despite not knowing about the memes or reputation surrounding anything in the game and playing it mostly blind, his build at level 170 at the final boss was Bloodhound's Fang and Radahn set with the Carian Knight's Shield. Can't make it up. Kevin is real.

                                                                                                                • Of you're looking for a fresh, original use for this weapon, just try a Bloodhound Knight build. The armor set and Claws are both found on Mt. Gelmir. Pair this with stealth talismans such as Crepus's Vial and Concealing Veil, and spells/incants like Unseen Form and Darkness. The Assassin's Gambit AoW also works wonders for stealth. Stalk your enemies as a Bloodhound. Try it, try anything but what you people normally use the Fang for.
