Unseals sending gate, but disappears upon use

Imbued Sword Key is a Key Item in Elden Ring. Imbued Sword Key can be used by the player to break the seal on the imp statue guarding the sending gates, but the item disappears upon use. Key Items in Elden Ring include a wide variety of items found in specific locations or are given by a related NPCs which are used to unlock areas, quests, and to further progress the game's story.

Stone key shaped like a sword.
A special item, imbued with rich blue magic.

Breaks the seal on the imp statues guarding the sending gates enshrined in each belfry, but remains embedded in the statue after use, meaning it can only be used once as an item.

Think well before using one.

Where to find Imbued Sword Key in Elden Ring

Shadow of the Erdtree

Base Game
  • One is found in a chest at The Four Belfries. The chest is located in front of the fourth belfry, at the very top of the hill. [Map Link]
  • It can be looted off a corpse found on the east side of the Raya Lucaria Academy rooftops. [Map Link]
  • One is found in Sellia, Town of Sorcery in a small building in the northeast section of town. The area the key is found in is initially blocked off by a light blue barrier, but climbing to the top of the 3 towers in town and lighting the flame when prompted will enable access to these locations. [Map Link]

Elden Ring Imbued Sword Key Use

  • Imbued Sword Keys are used to activate Waygates at The Four Belfries, allowing users to teleport to various locations.

  • In Shadow of the Erdtree, the key can be used at a gate above the front entrance to Castle Ensis. Head southeast from the Scadutree Altus, West site of grace, or southwest from the Highroad Cross grace. Look for a orangey rectangle on the map, towards the east side of the small island. This gate sends you to an isolated location in Ancient Ruins of Rauh, at the large lake southeast of the Rauh Ancient Ruins grace. This area can be accessed later without using the key, but the rest of the zone cannot be accessed from this area. Using this key allows you to pick up the Verdigris Discus talisman earlier in the game.

Elden Ring Imbued Sword Key Notes & Tips

  • There appears to be a relatively common bug of some form that causes Imbued Sword Keys to disappear from a player's inventory after either quitting the game, dying while possessing one or multiple Imbued Sword Keys, or using an Imbued Sword Key while there is more than one in in player's inventory. There is presently no known cause for this issue. There is no known way to recover the lost key after it disappears.

If you kill boc and then kill miriel you can go to iji and he will congratulate you and offer to imbue any stonesword keys you have and turn them into imbued sword keys

There’s one in the academy as well it’s by the upper part of the main church/ cathedral that you gl in when entering from the north gate

the key in Sellia is not behind the barrier but in a chest found outside in the north-east side of the town, close to the mountain wall. there is a ghost mage guarding the opening.

The key you find in the DLC (or one you got in the base game) can be used at a gate above the front entrance to Castle Ensis. Head southeast from the "Scadutree Altus, West" grace. Look for a orangey rectangle on the map, towards the east side of the small island.

            • Anonymous

...so why is there one of these in Castle Ensis? AFAIK the DLC doesn't add any new gates that would need one and the base game already has enough to unlock them all. So bizarre.

I actually found a fourth key in the upper section of Siofra, where the ancestor woods and Nokstella are. There is a section of ruins that are above the bottom siofra river area where the dragonkin soldier is that you can jump down into. Continue down in the section and the key is on one of a few corpses.

There's only 3 of these? So you can literally only pick ONE of the Bellfries to open? Man, I was trying to go back to the Grafted Scion but I opened up the 3rd one on accident, not paying attention enough to the names and which one went where, I had the 2 mixed up yet I was confident. Then I spawned on a ****ing rock floating in butt-fk no where. This blows, and I don't even think i can get a 3rd one because I think it glitched out of my inv.

The map link is off for the Imbued Stonesword Key in Raya Lucaria. It should be towards the west end of the pit area, dead on top of the lower right corner (poking in) of the building area that's adjacent to it.

I found the Pearldrake Talisman ( 3rd gate - should be a destroyed city with tornados in front of you). Off to the left, you can jump down a couple of platforms, and you will find it on a dead body. It boosts non physical attack damage negation.

Second Belfry tower from the top will not stay activated. You better stay alive until you find a site of grace once taken to the new location or you won't be able to go back

                            • Anonymous

The second belfry tower, the one below, will not stay activated once you use the key on it. If you die at the location where it transports you you'll need another one to reactivate.

So I get it now. Butterfly is making sure you are dead in case you manage to beat the boss in the very starting game. Well played.

There's a 4th imbued imp in a dungeon somewhere and it locks me out of opening all the gates are the four belfires because i've already used all the keys :/

Got the one at the Academy Rooftops location, saved my game and quit for the night. Logged on today and it's no longer in my inventory. It's not at the location where I originally got it either. What a horrible, freaking, random glitch... Errgh!

Does anybody know what is the purpose of doing this? I have went through all three portals and they all lead to dead ends (Unless I didn't notice something within them).

For all those wondering why there are only 3 keys but there are 4 Belfries. It's because 1 of the 4 belfries does not contain a waygate. It contains a chest.

northeast side of sellia town of sorcery on the outside edge of town against cliff - left of the walk way from street town blocked by wagon

The last one is in a chest in the north-east corner of Sellia, its a little tricky to find but its right below the one building on the map that is not in line with the rest. Available after you've unlocked the barriers by lighting the torches in the towers

                                            • Anonymous

Are there only two in the whole game? I found the one in the Academy and the one at the Four Belfries, but that still leaves one portal unopened. Are you just locked out of 1 out of 3 portals per playthrugh?

Third sword key is found in Caelid. Sellia, Town of Sorcery. Northwestern part of town, there will be an open wall with a treasure chest and 1 sorcerer phantom, then when you go to open the chest a sword and shield sorcerer phantom will appear around the corner.

I found the third key is sellia town of sorcery after lowering the magic sealed gates I believe it was in one of the chests.

One is also located in Sellia, Town of Sorcery, on the north side behind some buildings. I can't remember if I got it in one of the chests behind the seals or if it was lying on the ground.

                                                    • Anonymous

one imbued sword key is in selia the town of sorcery, behind a blue sealed door in the corner. Requires lighting the three towers in the town.

One is found at Raya Lucaria Grand Library on the rooftop parkour to the Church of Cuckoo which you can reach from the courtyard

I can’t find the one at Selia, and have checked the entire town. I do not think I have picked it up already. Does anyone else have this problem?
