Spellthief is one of the Two-Handed Ranged Weapons in Baldur's Gate 3. In BG3, each type of weapon has different ranges, damages, and other features (Finesse, Versatile, Dippable, etc). Characters need to master certain Proficiency before using a weapon, and sometimes gain a special Actions while holding it.

AnonymousA fun way to use this bow is to give it to a spell caster with 3 levels into rogue and take the assassin subclass.
Asssassinate Ambush allows a guarateed crit on any succesful attack to a surprised creature, allowing a slot replenish right "before" battle.
Most likely using speed potions to get an extra action will let you regen another spell slot, but im not sure as i never tried that.
At higher levels i imagine it not being too worth it, as a lvl 1 spell is still a lvl 1 spell, but i it's still an extra spell slot + some good ph dmg.

A fun way to use this bow is to have 3 levels in rogue and take the assassin subcalss.
This way you have a guarateed crit on the surprise round.
Possibly having speed potions can allow you to use Assassinate ambus multiple times, allowing more slot regen, but im not sure, i'd need to test it on a dedicated char.

This bow is pretty good if you run a spellcaster with 3 levels into rogue and take the assassin subclass.
this way you can sneak, attack twice with the bow for nice dmg and then fight as normal while having pretty much all the main benefits of being a rogue.
Im not sure it's efficient, but it's sure pretty fun, especially when you have speed potions so you can trigger the crit during the surprise round multiple times

An easy way to proc this weapon's effect is by knocking out an enemy and then finishing them off at 3m or closer since every melee attack against a knocked out enemy is a crit.

It didn't drop from the hag for me. And I haven't bought it before, haven't even talked with her at the druid camp

I can't play my ranger without this bow. Having only 3 spell slots is a real pain in the ass, at least this bow helps with that

I like to give it to Gale alongside with weapon master trait (longbow/scimitar/shortsword/handcrossbow) so that he can pop some extra spells. He can also shoot sleeping targets for crits and shoot his mage hand for abuse.

They really should have made this a common crossbow for true spell casters.
