Yes, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight has an explorable Gotham City that players can freely move through between story missions. Gotham is not just a mission select hub. It contains full districts with activities, puzzles, fast travel points, and collectibles.

Gotham Map Size, Districts, and Map Areas

Gotham is split across four main islands: Tricorner Island, South Island, Central Island, and North Island. Those islands are divided into the following districts:

  • Tricorner
  • Old Gotham South
  • Old Gotham North
  • Old Gotham West
  • The Cauldron South
  • The Cauldron North - Ace Chemicals
  • Newtown
  • Gotham Village - Robinson Park
  • East End - Amusement Mile

How Towers Reveal Collectibles on the Map

Towers become available after unlocking Batgirl in Chapter 4. Once she's playable, use her Hackarang on the button near a tower, then complete the hacking minigame to activate it.

Activating a Tower reveals collectibles and activities in the surrounding district. However, some points of interest may require additional story progress, characters, or traversal abilities before they can be seen on the map or addressed.

For every Tower location and access requirement, see our All Towers & How to Access Them guide.

How SubWayne Fast Travel Works

SubWayne stations are Gotham’s fast travel points. There are nine stations scattered across the map, and each one must be unlocked by solving a nearby puzzle before it can be used.

Some SubWayne puzzles require specific characters, including Batman, Jim Gordon, Catwoman, and Robin. Once a station is unlocked, you can travel to it instantly from anywhere on the map.

For all station locations and puzzle solutions, see our SubWayne Fast Travel Guide.

Gotham Collectibles, Activities, and Puzzles

Gotham’s open world is home to collectibles, district-specific activities, and puzzles that are easiest to clean up after activating towers and unlocking all the playable characters.

For the full collectible hub, see our Collectibles Guide & Locations. For specific open-world guides, start with these:

Do You Need to Return Later With New Characters?

Yes, some activities and puzzles in Gotham require characters or abilities that unlock later in the story. If you run into something you can't deal with, continue the story and return later with more playable characters and gadgets unlocked.

Can You Explore Gotham in Co-Op?

Yes, Gotham can be explored in local co-op. Two players can move through the city together, complete activities, solve puzzles, fight enemies, and collect items in the same local session.

However, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight does not have native online multiplayer, so co-op is limited to two players on the same system. For more details, see our guide explaining how co-op and multiplayer work.

Is Gotham Worth Exploring Between Missions?

Yes, Gotham is worth exploring between story missions, especially after unlocking new characters and gadgets. Players aiming for 100% completion should regularly explore the open world and return to older districts instead of saving all collectible cleanup for the endgame.
