Sneak Attack (Melee) Tips & Notes
- Sneak Attack is best used, not as a separate action, but when set to be triggered automatically under your character's Spellbook > Reactions tab. Here you can set conditions for the trigger. This allows you to combine Sneak Attack with Weapon Actions and other types of attacks.
- Note, however, that using Sneak Attack as a separate action can be done in addition to having it set up as a reaction. Using it as your primary attack (when not doing Weapon Actions) will prevent you from accidentally attacking when you don't have Advantage.
- Some ways to get Advantage so your Sneak Attack can be executed:
- As of Patch #1: You can Sneak Attack with Spell Attacks requiring an Attack Roll to determine whether you hit, e.g. Shocking Grasp or Eldritch Blast. Sneak Attack damage will apply only once and you need wield a Finesse or Ranged weapon.
- For the Rogue class, you might want to consider different scenarios whether you want to equip a Dagger or a Shortsword on your main hand when using this action. Some daggers you acquire in endgame like the Bloodthirst, reduce crit requirement and also give you vulnerability to piercing, which can deal double damage. The Crimson Mischief deals an additional 1-4 piercing damage with 50% of their hit points or fewer.
Anonymouswtf are you guys talking - just combine it with reckless attack barb and use it every round

AnonymousIf I multiclass into fighter, could that one maneuver that gives advantage also allow me to add sneak attack damage to that hit? It’s already adding a d8 to the damage so that kinda seems op

AnonymousDoes true strike work with sneak attack, like I mean it'll take an action of the turn but is a sneak attack considered bonus action?

AnonymousI have a question. A familiar raven or an invisible quasit doesn't trigger an enemy to attack them if they don't attack first correct? If you were to park one 1.5 meters of an opponent you're smacking, would you get your sneak attack modifier on all your hits while they leave your familiar alone?

AnonymousSo, i went 4 levels into Ranger for gloom stalker and the lvl 4 feat, now i dual classed into rogue.
But for some reason the additional attack from dread ambusher on the first turn doesn't let me follow up with a sneak attack afterwards.
Is this a bug or am i missing something? The game displays "Not enough resources: %%% EMPTY" for me, so i guess sneak attack and dread ambusher have the same attack resource in the code?
AnonymousProgression of dnd.....
1-3e: you can't sneak attack without finesse based weapons are you crazy.....
3.5-4e: can't you just bonk them really hard on the head impretty sure a coward punch is a thing. I'm pretty sure I could inflict alot of damage with my hands if I had a sneak attack I do have retractable claws........
5e: no you can't I'm too quick I have mind monk powers, what a nerd am I right guys
AnonymousSneak Attack damage dice are based on your Rogue level. Tested with level 3 thief level 4 ranger. Sneak attack stayed at 2d6 from level 3.

AnonymousAny reason to use a finesse weapon to sneak attack when you can just tavern brawler unarmed and have nearly the same dmg bonus + attack roll. Forgive my ignorance but lvl 3 rogue is potential 12 dmg? Tavern with 20 is an potential 10 acc and dmg? Not even including flurry dbl hits etc. Just main attacks alone, these numbers right? Thx

AnonymousI just realize when got advantage attack (like hiding) with hand crossbow, sneak attack will procs 2 times when use sneak attack will procs only 1 time

A shadow monk could use a versable/two-handed finesse weapon to perform a sneak melee attack. And spend bonus actions with a double punch. But they need martal weapon skill

AnonymousCurrently seems that Sneak Attack will not activate if you're using Disguise Self

AnonymousOnly 6d6? I wound like to play a sneak build but this needs a buff

AnonymousSneak attack with spells was likely just a bug and they've fixed it in a later patch, spells like Eldritch Blast and Shocking Grasp don't trigger sneak attack anymore.

AnonymousAnyone else got this to engage on a bow?
I was running 5 hunter, 4 thief , 3 champion and my my bow crit and i got this as a reaction dual wielding swords
AnonymousI just had dual-wielding Astarion proc Sneak attack twice on a combined main hand attack (costing 1 action + 1 bonus action). Though the enemy died right after the first hit.

Anonymousit's work with dual wield or get only the main hand attack cause the charger is once per turns...?

AnonymousSneack Attack + Shocking Grasp is not working as of Patch 2, I don't think the fixed in Patch 1 worked.

AnonymousDisguise self seems to disable the sneak attack reaction. And maybe some others.

AnonymousIs there any advantage on using a dagger instead of a short sword for rogues?

Anonymousi noticed on my rouge/monk that unarmed strikes can proc sneak attack, but only if you have a finesse weapon equipped. I guess the game doesn't care if you are actually using the finesse weapon, just that you have one on. If there is a way to make an unarmed strike as an action while having a weapon equipped that i am not aware of (aside from things like stunning strike), a str tavern brawler monk could take one or more levels in rogue for sneak attack

AnonymousAs of now the sneak attack can only be used once per round, which means if you applied SA on a OA, you can't use it on your next turn

AnonymousOk so yeah, sneak attack damage applies automatically to any qualifying attack not just the sneak attack actions, (pommel strike works for instance, so does offhand bonus attacks), i don't know if there's any reason to actually use the sneak attack specific actions. If you turn on always ask on the reactions menu it's much clearer how and when it works. Basically use any attack you want.

AnonymousHow does the "always ask"prompt work exactly, with other types of attacks. does it overide to turn it into a sneak attack? Does it stay the same and just add the extra damage dice. Either seems like a welrd way to handle it.

Anonymous
Anonymouswhy does it take an action tho, not just an automatic trigger.. :(
or am i missing something?
AnonymousDoes „savage attacker” feat (When making weapon attacks, you roll your damage twice and use the highest result) work on sneak attacks also?

Anonymous
AnonymousFor anyone wondering, you can actually make this work with the barbarian reckless attack.
All you need to do is going into the reaction tab and check sneak attack to always activate and always ask.
You now want to always attack using the reckless option, when you land the hit the game will prompt you to use sneak attack like it would on a divine smite.
Reykam
AnonymousAs this is seperate from the normal "attack action" would it not proc the extra attack from Gloomstalker's Dread Ambushers or from another multiclass with extra attack?

AnonymousWhen duel weapons, does the sneak attack apply for the off hand separately? Like 2 x 1d6 per an action attack.
