What Are Natures in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen?

In Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, Natures are a trait inherent to every Pokemon that increase and decrease two of a Pokemon’s non-HP stats by 10%, affecting the growth rate of the affected stats as a Pokemon levels up. Every Pokemon has six stats: HP, Attack, Defense, Sp. Atk, Sp. Def, and Speed. Natures affect Attack, Defense, Sp. Atk, Sp. Def, and Speed, but never HP.

There are 25 Natures in total, each increasing a certain stat by 10% and decreasing another stat by 10%. Five out of these 25 are called “Neutral Natures” because they increase and decrease the same stat, effectively nullifying their own effect on the Pokemon.

The 10% increase and decrease introduced by Natures alters the maximum possible values of the Pokemon’s stats. If a Pokemon’s maximum possible Attack stat without the influence of Natures is 100, for example, a beneficial Nature like Adamant or Lonely would increase this value to 110.

Conversely, if the same Pokemon has a hindering Nature for Attack like Modest or Bold, the maximum value of its Attack stat will become 90. Of course, if it is a Neutral Nature, the stat value will remain at 100.

To reach the maximum potential of a Pokemon, a beneficial Nature alone isn’t enough. Perfect IVs and EV training are major factors as well.

In most cases, desirable Natures for a Pokemon are those that increase its best stats while decreasing its least used stats. For instance, a Blastoise relies on its Special Attack stat for all of its damage-dealing moves, and does not use its Attack stat at all. Naturally, the best Nature for Blastoise would be Modest (+Sp. Atk, -Atk).

Similarly, all of a Rhydon’s moves are physical in Nature, and as a result, use the Attack stat for damage; the Special Attack remains unused. Therefore, the best Nature for a Rhydon would be Adamant (+Atk, -Sp. Atk).

Trainers cannot manually choose the Nature of a Pokemon; it is all up to chance. However, it is possible to use the soft reset method to reroll the Nature of static Pokemon encounters like the starter trio until players get a desirable Nature.
