Mega Punch and Mega Kick are taught by two rival Move Tutors located on Route 4 in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen. Since trainers only get one opportunity to get someone on their team to learn these moves from the tutors, deciding which Pokemon it should be can be a daunting choice.
This guide covers the strengths and weaknesses of Mega Punch and Mega Kick, the Pokemon most suited to learn these moves, and how players can extract the most value out of them in their playthrough. Here are the details.

Mega Punch is a decently powerful Normal-type move in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen that is best suited for Pokemon with a high Attack stat. However, its 85% Accuracy rating holds it back, as most trainers would prefer to have their Pokemon learn a move that is 100% accurate, even if it deals a little bit less damage. Consistency is more important than sheer power in most cases.
As a result, Mega Punch is in a bit of an awkward spot. It does not do enough damage to justify the loss of accuracy, meaning the Pokemon that want to learn it are few and far between. That said, a major point in Mega Punch’s favor is the fact that its Move Tutor is available very early on in the game. Since most Pokemon only start learning moves with 80+ Power post level 20-30, this means Mega Punch can be taught to a Pokemon at a time when it does not have access to many good damage-dealing moves.
This is a move that is destined to be replaced by something better down the line. Because of this, the earlier Mega Punch is taught to a Pokemon, the more value you will get out of it. Here are some Pokemon that are most suitable for learning Mega Punch in FireRed and LeafGreen:
- Nidoking or Nidoqueen: If you catch a Nidoran on Route 3, and use a Moon Stone from Mt. Moon to reach its final evolution, this Pokemon will have a really good Attack, but with no moves to use it on. Mega Punch can be useful here.
- Mankey: Mankey does not learn any good damage-dealing moves after Karate Chop and Low Sweep until level 28. Mega Punch can fill in that void nicely.
- Pikachu: Pikachu learns Slam at level 20, which is basically a worse version of Mega Punch, since it deals the same amount of damage but with even worse accuracy (75%). Mega Punch can replace this move slot if you don’t have anything better lined up.
Mega Punch is considered a “Punching move,” and as such, benefits from the Iron Fist ability (increases the power of punching moves by 20%). Unfortunately, although it is the sigNature ability of Hitmonchan, a Pokemon you can obtain for free in FireRed and LeafGreen, this ability was not introduced until Gen 4.

Mega Kick is one of the most powerful Normal-type moves in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, sacrificing even more accuracy than Mega Punch in exchange for a large boost in power, putting it in the same league as Blizzard, Fire Blast, and Thunder.
As a result, the best Pokemon to teach Mega Kick to are powerful Normal-type physical attackers that can boost the move’s powers to its limits using the 1.5x STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus). The only two Pokemon that fulfill this criterion are:
- Snorlax: After obtaining the Poke Flute from Mr. Fuji on the top floor of the Pokemon Tower, you’ll be able to wake up the sleeping Snorlax blocking the routes for a guaranteed encounter. Thanks to its incredible bulk and excellent Attack stat, Snorlax is the ultimate physical attacker in FireRed and LeafGreen, making it a perfect carrier for Mega Kick.
- Kangaskhan: Found in the Safari Zone in Fuchsia City, Kangaskhan is another excellent choice to learn Mega Kick in FRLG. Its Normal typing ensures it will extract every ounce of value from this move, and the fact that it does not naturally learn any Normal-type move that is nearly as strong as Mega Kick means this will likely be a permanent mainstay in its moveset.
Technically speaking, Snorlax and Kangaskhan are even more suitable for learning Mega Punch than the Pokemon listed in that section. The reason they are not listed there is because of the fact that they get basically no value out of being taught Mega Punch by a Move Tutor.
Kangaskhan, for instance, already knows Mega Punch at level 25, the same level at which it can be caught in the Safari Zone, making the Move Tutor obsolete.
Snorlax, on the other hand, learns Body Slam at level 33, a vastly superior move to Mega Punch in every single way, making it useless for the Pokemon to learn it.
