Seth Meyers will host, and the evening will feature musical performances by Grammy and two-time Tony Award nominee Shoshana Bean, jazz pianist Aaron Diehl, and the Young People's Chorus of New York City’s Chorus of New York City. The evening will honor the LEON LEVY FOUNDATION for their support in digitizing NYPR’s rich archives, and past and present members of our Board of Trustees for their incredible commitment and vision. This year’s Gala will also include a special ticketed after-party to give WNYC and WQXR fans another way to celebrate with us. The after-party will be hosted by filmmaker and author New York Nico, and will include an open bar, classic NYC treats, and music featuring a special DJ set by renowned hip hop artist and social activist Talib Kweli. Both events will take place at New York City’s The Glasshouse. Thomas Hjelm liked thisThomas Hjelm liked thisEarlier today, the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit heard oral arguments on whether to uphold the lower court’s decision to block the above-ground construction of the White House ballroom. While the three-judge panel did not issue a ruling from the bench, National Trust President and CEO Carol Quillen expressed the following: “The White House is the most iconic historic site in our nation. Today we again stood up for the American people, the democratic process, and the rule of law. We stand firm that only Congress has the authority to authorize demolition and construction at this beloved place. Tonight, I’m thinking about the fact that the NYT has 24 people on the state of the union. I love the Times, and all my friends and former colleagues who have found a good home there. They do VITAL work. But what could those 24 people do for some important communities who have few to no journalists? Democracy is built upon a foundation of local news. Without this, democracy indeed dies in darkness. Props to Marty.

Now I’m thrilled to be able to give back by joining the Board of Trustees of Public Media Infrastructure (PMI). PMI is a newly formed public media support organization dedicated to meeting the infrastructure needs of all of our stations in this new post-CPB era, providing innovative, efficient, and sustainable technology, and partnering with NPR to help public radio stations across the country thrive in this critical time of change. An extra perk? Partnering again with my former boss LaFontaine E. Oliver, who’s been named Chair of the Board, and working alongside the five founding organizations I believe in deeply and have watched over the years support, innovate, and grow public media in ways that have kept us thriving: American Public Media Group, PRX , New York Public Radio, Station Resource Group (SRG), and the National Federation of Community Broadcasters (NFCB) . Thomas Hjelm liked thisThomas Hjelm liked thisOne more big forward promote - I'm retiring at the end of March. There are too many thank-you's to share after 40 years on playing on, in, and around the radio. They'll come in time, and hopefully many in person. When my daughter was little, someone asked her what her dad did for work. "He listens to the radio and talks on the phone about it." She wasn't wrong, and I've been blessed to be a part of amplifying and lifting up the work of journalists, producers, and some of public radio's most creative organizations. Even better, often times I got to do that "work" with my wife, Deb Blakeley. Thanks for the stories, the trust, and for listening. The radio will stay on, and I look forward to becoming the most important part of public media - the audience. With deep gratitude, a full heart, and big ears.

Thomas Hjelm liked thisA very bittersweet day. Personally and professionally, it has been a tremendous 6.5-year ride in public media (and my first foray in a non-profit). Thanks to so many of you with whom I have worked closely for the kind, heartwarming words of gratitude and support. I'm grateful to have worked with (my usual Type A-fueled) grit, tenacity and humor alongside my awesome, dedicated digital strategy and innovation team (Flaka Spahiu, MBA, PMI-ACP; Allie Vanyur) -- as well as in partnership with some smart and passionate station GMs and CEOs and with many rock star digital product/tech/marketing leaders across the entire public media system, NPR, and PBS-- designing, funding, implementing, supporting and tirelessly championing new digital transformation training programs, technology solutions, and digital content and marketing initiatives resulting in measurable, bottom line impact. I remain a big supporter of public media and a proponent of the imperative for significant change, evolution and disruption in this seminal moment. And along those lines --- if anyone needs support developing new business/digital/product/marketing/partnership strategies and operating (revenue) models - just holler. While a smaller team will remain in place through the wind-down process to sustain operations at a reduced scale until all remaining obligations are fulfilled, this is a sad and challenging moment for all of us. These departing colleagues have strengthened the legacy and impact of public media and have made a profound difference in the lives of the American people. All of us at CPB are deeply grateful for their extraordinary service and dedication. We are also grateful for the tremendous outpouring of support from around the country for CPB and for public media. We remain confident in the resilience of the public media system, which will endure. For now, to everyone who continues to believe in the power of local storytelling, fact-based journalism, and lifelong learning—thank you.
