Phillip Morelock shared thisExcellent read from Puck (paywall): “The moral of the story, of course, is that Wall Street is often quick to fall in love with the new, shiny thing (think of all those underwriting and M&A fees!) only to misjudge the valuations, the cost, the demand, the management—pretty much everything. And yet, without all those fiber networks and all that eviscerated capital, we likely wouldn’t be able to doomscroll, stream our favorite shows on our pocket computers, or text one another endlessly. In other words, despite hundreds of billions of dollars in losses, the assets that remained proved to be essential infrastructure.” https://lnkd.in/g3fCEHfc

Phillip Morelock posted thisFour hype cycles in, I've noticed something: The technology gets all the headlines, but the buyer determines the winner. IBM won when the buyer was a non-technical executive. Microsoft won when the buyer was IT. Apple won when the consumer finally drove. Today's AI buyer is a weird coalition — engineering, marketing, sales, and IT, all with different priorities and a lot of consumer AI experience already baked in. That changes who's positioned to win, and tells me who I genuinely wouldn't want to be for the next five years. More notes from my fourth hype cycle → link in comments.

Phillip Morelock posted thisI hear a lot of people saying Claude is their "smartest coworker." That's close but I think it misses the mark: I think Claude is my most tireless and irrepressible co-worker. And Claude really thinks Claude can do just about anything. This most indubitably tireless co-worker is energetically grinding through so many tasks, that they miss a lot of details. Sometimes those details don't matter, and sometimes they really really do. So before I show Claude's work to my customer, my boss, my colleagues...I really need to make sure Claude wasn't on some work-bender last night. Also, much like with a human entry-level employee, I have to be extremely aware of the context I'm providing Claude: too little, and they really can't nail the spirit of the task; too much, and they try way too hard to meet every imputed need. Maybe Claude is the golden retriever of co-workers? Good Claude. Have a treat.

Phillip Morelock liked thisPhillip Morelock liked thisQ2 was Capsule's best quarter in company history. I've noticed a shift the last several months, where CMOs and CEOs are coming to us more ready than ever to go all-in on video. And they're choosing Capsule to help them do that. We focused on rebuilding our sales process from the ground up, and it paid off. This was a full-team effort, but I have to especially shoutout the sales team for how hard they worked to do this: Chris Feroli, Nolan McAllister, Sophie Wicks, Chris Walsh A few of the wins I'm most proud of: - Revenue in Q2 was more than the previous four quarters combined - More than tripled our win rate - Cut our sales cycle in half - Highest volume and quality of pipeline to date I'm excited about some major product updates coming this quarter and expect Q3 to be even bigger.

Phillip Morelock liked thisPhillip Morelock liked thisIt should cost us about $10 in tokens to monitor a single 6-minute phone call. That's with OpenAI's standard pricing. Balto runs an LLM on every single conversation, every 800 milliseconds. To give you a sense of how wild that is: a 6-minute call means 450 LLM runs. And it's actually more than that, because we run dozens of prompts per cycle. A typical call can easily exceed 3,000 to 4,000 runs for just a couple of minutes. Across our customer base, a slow day is hundreds of billions of tokens. At GPT-5.5 rates, that's millions of dollars per day. Obviously we don't pay that. We have our own agreement and our own proprietary models. But making those economics work took years of engineering. I bring this up because I'm a actually a huge believer in vibecoding. Contact centers can now build useful tools internally that they never could before, and I encourage it. Just know that building something and running it are different problems. A vibecoded dashboard costs nothing to operate. Real-time AI on every conversation is a meter that never stops. The industry is still learning how expensive that difference is.

Phillip Morelock liked thisGO TIME!Phillip Morelock liked thisNova-1 is set to deploy from SpaceX's Transporter-17 just after midnight tonight. As the first Nova in orbit, Nova-1 will serve as a flying testbed, proving out the Nova platform architecture and the vertically integrated tech stack (power, avionics, solar, flight software) that will underpin all future Apex platforms. Nova mission success has been divided into three discrete phases, each with a clearly defined set of objectives that will help prove Nova’s readiness as a true constellation workhorse. – Phase 1 (Minimum Viable Product): Establish communications and confirm power-positivity. Platform is healthy in orbit. – Phase 2 (Crossing the Threshold): Continue platform commissioning. Power on payloads and downlink data. – Phase 3 (Fully Operational Space Platform): Complete platform commissioning. Begin Project Shadow commissioning and mission ops. – Pushing the Limit: Following Project Shadow, Apex will continue testing the limits of Nova’s performance on orbit. Stay tuned for more mission updates over the next several weeks.

Phillip Morelock liked thisPhillip Morelock liked thisI’m grateful to share that I’m stepping into a new role leading the Global Software Practice at Russell Reynolds Associates. For the last three-plus years, I’ve had the privilege of leading our Technology Practice across the Americas. It has been a fulfilling and meaningful chapter — not just because of the work, but because of the people. I’m proud of what this team has built: the clients we’ve served, the leadership questions we’ve helped boards and CEOs think through, and the way our colleagues have continued to show up for one another. A special thank you to Tristan Jervis, Todd Savage, Pam Attinger, and Dan Cullen. I’m grateful for your leadership, partnership, and trust. I’ve learned a great deal from each of you, and I’m excited to carry that work forward globally. The last few years have deepened a core belief: in software, leadership is critical. Products, markets, capital, and strategy all matter. But leadership is what turns potential into performance — especially in moments of growth, change, and uncertainty. As AI, market volatility, workforce transformation, and shifting customer expectations reshape the software landscape, the leadership questions facing boards, CEOs, founders, and investors are becoming even more consequential. I’m grateful to keep building this work globally with colleagues, clients, candidates, and leaders across the software ecosystem — and excited for what’s ahead.

It has been a massive week of technical growth here at the studio. As a boutique developer, my focus is always on moving beyond "off-the-shelf" limitations to provide my partners with a distinct competitive advantage. This week's highlights: The Launch of Orchard Care: We officially rolled out our proprietary WordPress plugin designed for managed site health, proactive security, and performance hardening. The Revenue Engine: We finalized the prototype for a bespoke Stripe-integrated invoicing portal, designed to eliminate manual billing friction and automate cash flow. Custom Software Campaign: We’ve officially opened our latest sprint for businesses ready to move beyond templates and into custom-built applications. Running a family-focused studio in the Upstate means I value time as much as I value clean code. My goal isn't just to hand over a project; it’s to build the systems that give you your hours back. Precision engineering should serve your life, not just your laptop. To maintain the high-touch, precision standards our clients deserve, we only accept a limited number of new builds each month. Current Availability: We have 2 development slots remaining for March. Ready to build your business's "Secret Weapon"? For most brands, Q4 isn’t just another quarter - it’s the main event. And the difference between a good BFCM and a record-breaking one often comes down to data-driven decisions, not guesswork. Adam and the team at Elephant Room have done something pretty special here. Instead of vague “best practices,” they’ve opened up their full 2024 BFCM performance data to help you time, budget and scale your campaigns when the stakes are highest. If you’re serious about growth this BFCM, this index isn’t just worth a look - it’s a planning cheat code. #BFCM #eCommerceStrategy #Retail

New Dave's Quick Hits is up. Three stories with the same flaw. 1️⃣ Vitalik Buterin on why smart people justify terrible decisions with brilliant-sounding arguments. His test: if a scam could use the exact same reasoning, the argument tells you nothing. "Responsible acceleration" fails this test. So does "inevitable transformation." 2️⃣ OpenAI led a $15M seed into Red Queen Bio to evaluate whether AI bio capabilities are matched by adequate defenses. The structure: OpenAI builds the capabilities, funds the evaluator, and the evaluator judges if OpenAI is safe. That's like letting the developer inspect their own building. 3️⃣ A method to test 100 samples of a father's DNA before making an embryo. Cost: $20,000 (same as IVF today). Result: your daughter moves from 50th percentile to 90th for traits genes control. The argument that follows: "It's irresponsible not to optimize your child." The pattern: arguments that sound sophisticated but rule nothing out. They work equally well for a legitimate company, a scam, or the opposite strategy. Vitalik's test: would this feel safe if your enemy ran it instead of someone you respect? Rules only hold when they're set before capital shows up. After that, revenue bends every line. Here we go...the dawn of chat bot advertising. You knew it was coming. It was never "if"...it was always "when and how". Now Walmart (and apparently Amazon, too) are testing the most effective approaches. The "when" is now and the "how" is in active testing. My prediction...if the big story of AI in 2025 was the amount of capex being spent on the required infrastructure, the big story of AI in 2026 will be the surge of advertising revenue on the back of AI prompts and responses. https://lnkd.in/guGN6nBU Here's the question for big health systems. Consumers have shifted their health questions from search to AI faster in healthcare than almost anywhere else. Up to now, the common refrain of "check with your doctor" in a chatbot response has probably felt reassuring to traditional health providers. But we're on our way to those health questions in chatbots being advertising opportunities for the disruptors and innovators to reach consumers and patients. If those innovators have solutions to everyday health problems that are often cheaper and more convenient than going to your doctor and they have a new way to reach patients, the shift of primary care and non-acute care away from traditional health providers will only accelerate.

Most streaming catalogs are surprisingly shallow. And the data reveals something the industry doesn't talk about enough. We analyzed TV libraries across eight major U.S. streaming platforms. The finding that stood out: 61% to 89% of every catalog consists of shows that ran just one or two seasons. That's a lot of content that comes and goes. But here's where it gets interesting. Three platforms bucked the trend: → Paramount+: 21% of titles have 5+ seasons → NBCUniversal's Peacock: 16% → HBO Max: 14% The common thread? Decades of broadcast and cable heritage. "Star Trek." "Law & Order." "The Office." "Friends." "The Sopranos." These aren't just nostalgic favorites. They're retention engines. A subscriber halfway through season 4 of something they love doesn't cancel. A household that puts on "The Office" for background noise represents hours of engagement with zero new content investment. And here's the problem for everyone else: You can't manufacture a 10-season franchise overnight. The supply is fixed. The studios that own these libraries know it. And license fees reflect that scarcity. For #streaming-first platforms, the path to catalog depth runs through patience. Netflix's "Stranger Things" and "Cobra Kai" are getting there. But building dozens of titles like that takes years. Legacy libraries aren't just nice to have. They're a competitive moat. 📊 Full analysis with charts on the Reelgood blog (link in comments) What's your take: Will catalog depth matter more or less as the streaming wars evolve? #streamingdata #streamingcontent

I’m incredibly excited to announce the latest Intuit Mailchimp product release! Our focus was simple: equipping retailers with the tools they need now to drive maximum revenue during the most critical time of year. The new features help our customers personalize with more precision, move faster, and measure the tangible business impact of every campaign. Some of the key product highlights built for the modern ecommerce marketer: - Global SMS with Multi-Audience Control: Retailers can send personalized SMS campaigns across multiple countries (US, UK, Australia, Europe) from a single Mailchimp account, all while tracking performance in a unified dashboard. - Smarter Segmentation & Behavioral Triggers: Our updated Shopify integration unlocks rich behavioral data—like page viewed, search submitted, and product viewed—turning these insights into powerful, revenue-driving triggers. - Audience Analytics: We’ve made it easier to identify top-converting segments with an improved UI and growth tracking, helping marketers optimize campaigns faster and measure ROI in real-time. - Holiday-Ready Assets: New seasonal email templates and automation flow templates make it simple to build beautiful, on-brand campaigns quickly, especially critical as 43% of shoppers made a purchase tied to an early holiday moment. When marketers can quickly and accurately turn data into action, they unlock new ways to serve existing customers and acquire new ones. That’s the power of the Intuit platform! https://lnkd.in/g3cpdAaT
