Character Creation for The Outer Worlds 2
Character Creation in The Outer Worlds 2 allows you to design your protagonist before beginning your journey. The character creation for The Outer Worlds 2 will focus on four main pillars: Appearance, Background, Traits (both positive and negative), and tagged skills. Appearance allows you to customize physical details such as facial structure, hairstyle, and body type, giving freedom to design a unique protagonist that visually represents their playstyle. Background selection goes further, assigning a personal history that ties into the narrative and grants starting bonuses or penalties.
These backgrounds often shape how NPCs respond in conversation and open up unique dialogue paths based on a character’s past. Traits are unique characteristics that affect a player's interaction with the world, and Skills are abilities possessed by the player that determine their capabilities in various mechanics. These changes have been designed to feel weighty and impactful, pushing players to think carefully about how they want to roleplay and solve problems.
Outer Worlds 2 Character Creation: Appearance
Just like in any other character creation, you'll begin by customizing your character’s physical appearance through a wide range of options. Facial customization includes adjustments to head shape, eye spacing, jawline, nose size, and other features, allowing for a wide range of distinct looks rather than simple presets. Hairstyles and facial hair come in multiple styles, with varied lengths, textures, and colors that help distinguish the character further. You can also apply scars, blemishes, or age markings to reinforce personality or backstory through appearance. In addition, there is also a color palette system for hair, eyes, and skin tones, ensuring a wide spectrum of creative choices. While these adjustments are cosmetic and do not influence gameplay, they allow you to craft a protagonist that feels personal, unique, and visually memorable throughout the story.
Character Presets

Character Creation: Background
The Background system in The Outer Worlds 2 is an essential part of character creation. Once you're satisfied with your character's appearance, you'll then have to choose your character's background. The background represents who your character was before joining the Earth Directorate. Players will be able to choose from six backgrounds, such as the Ex-Convict, Gambler, Lawbringer, Professor, Renegade, and the Roustabout. While it may seem like background choices won't matter, they actually have various uses throughout your playthrough. Your chosen background may affect some NPC conversations and interactions in the world. Note that backgrounds do not impose fixed playstyles, but rather enrich the role-playing aspect and world interaction by tailoring how the game perceives you.

Character Creation: Traits
Once you've chosen your preferred background, you'll then have to choose what characteristic(s) you're character would have. These are called Traits. Traits are unique modifiers that may heavily influence your experience in the game. These traits can and will affect your character in combat and define how your character will interact with the world.
You'll first have to choose from a variety of positive traits from Brawny, Brilliant, Heroic, Innovative, Nimble, Resilient, Suave, Lucky, and Witty. Each Trait will give your character unique bonuses and interactions. For example, Brawny knocks down enemies when sliding or sprinting into enemies, Nimble allows you to be quicker on your feet, especially while stealthing, and Brilliant allows you to solve problems more easily. While you can choose more than one trait to create a more unique playthrough, doing so will force you to choose a negative trait to balance it out. Negative traits provide a negative impact for your character. You can choose from three negative traits, such as the Abrasive, Dumb, and Sickly.
To learn more about the various Traits and their effects, you can head over to our Traits page, or for a quicker overview, you can head to the table below.

Positive Traits
- Brawny lets you knock down enemies by sprinting or sliding into them, with a five-second cooldown.
- Brilliant grants an additional point in a tagged skill during creation (specialized skills start with two points).
- Heroic reduces companion ability charge time by 20%.
- Lucky offers a 5% critical hit chance boost and unlocks unique dialogue opportunities
- Nimble increases crouch movement and combat sprint speeds by 25%.
- Resilient prevents death for three seconds the first time you would be felled in each combat encounter.
- Innovative enhances crafting efficiency by using fewer resources per item.
- Suave unlocks a 10% vendor discount and increases bounty tolerance by 20%.
- Witty allows you to charm your way out of consequences, ensuring faction reputation can never drop below Neutral and preventing any penalties from negative standing.
Negative Traits
- Abrasive prevents faction reputation from rising above "Trusted," which limits discounts and faction dialogue options.
- Dumb permanently locks five of the twelve possible skills, meaning those skills can never be leveled. It also unlocks unique “dumb” dialogue options and approaches.
- Sickly increases the chance of injury and reduces resistance to toxicity.
Character Creation: Skills
After choosing the Background and Traits of your character, you'll then have to choose Skills to specialize in. Skills determine the capabilities of a character in various areas. It encompasses an array of abilities that will help the player throughout their playthrough. Skills do not only affect combat abilities; they also integrate outside of combat, such as sneaking, lockpicking, hacking, and observation.
Currently, you can choose from twelve skills, such as Guns, Melee, Sneak, Lockpick, Engineering, Explosives, Hack, Medical, Science, Observation, Leadership, and Speech. Guns increase ranged weapon damage and armor penetration. Melee increases weapon damage and affects close-quarters combat. Sneak reduces detection and increases sneak attack effectiveness. Lockpick governs access to locked containers and doors and affects how reliably mechanical locks are bypassed. Engineering covers repair, provides damage reduction, and allows you to interact with the various mechanical systems of the game. Explosives increase the damage and effectiveness of grenades and planted explosives and affect explosive resistance. Hack allows access to mechanical systems such as automatics and terminals. It also improves effectiveness against automechanicals. Medical increases your tolerance to toxicity and increases your damage to creatures. Science governs gadgets and improves stacks of non-Physical Damage Type side-effects. Observation improves detection of environmental clues, highlights weak points, and supports investigative approaches. Leadership increases companion performance and unlocks companion-related bonuses or commands. And finally, Speech controls persuasion, intimidation, lying, and related dialogue checks, and also provides bonus damage to humans.
Note that while there are twelve Skills to choose from, you can only specialize in up to two skills (Choosing the Brilliant Trait lets you choose an additional Skill to specialize in), and every time you level up, you'll be able to earn skill points to improve your skills. You can increase your skill proficiency by investing Skill points in them up to your current level, do note that Specialized Skills can be increased up to your current level +2.
Your skills will also determine what Perks you can acquire. Perks are permanent bonuses that can affect the player's gameplay. They can provide unique buffs, such as being able to see the contents of locked containers using the Through the Keyhole perk or increasing healing from food from the Foodie Perk. Perk points are earned at a rate of 1 point every 2 levels gained.
