Helena is a Tank class hero in Fellowship. Helena utilizes a mechanic called 'Toughness' which reduces the amount of damage she takes in battle. Toughness is indicated as a shield above her action bar and is affected by her shield abilities.

Helena utilizes a mechanic called 'Combo Points.' Combo Points are gained by the basic attack abilities, which in turn can be spent to use more powerful abilities. Helena's current combo points are indicated by the blue orbs above her shield representing Toughness.

Helena Biography in Fellowship

The commander and sole survivor of her troop, Helena swore long ago that as long as she still breathes, no soldier under her command will ever fall in battle. Helena is a stern presence within the Fellowship, maintaining a seasoned warrior's discipline. She uses both the shield she wields to protect others, and to distance herself from becoming too familiar with her companions, lest she suffer the burden of loss again.

Helena Quick Guide in Fellowship

Overview

Helena is a Melee Tank that uses Builder/Spender Mechanics. She excels in the front lines taking hits instead of her allies. Helena uses Combo Points to perform powerful attacks and generate Toughness. Toughness is her main resource for mitigating incoming damage and surviving dangerous attacks.

Helena's primary power stat is Strength. All damage she deals is affected by this stat.

Role Mechanics

Tanks are primarily responsible for managing the following mechanics:

Threat

  • Heroes generate Threat on enemies by doing damage to them or healing allies.
  • The first hero seen by an enemy generates an initial burst of Threat.
  • Tanks generate 350% more threat compared to Damage Dealers and Healers.
  • Aggro
    • Whoever has the highest Threat has an enemies’ Aggro.
    • When a hero has an enemies’ Aggro, the enemy will generally attempt to prioritize attacking this target.

Tank Tips:

  • Due tothe initial increased threat, tanks should be the first to initiate fights.
  • Every tank has a Taunt ability.
    • This ability will immediately set the tank to the highest threat for an enemy.
  • When allies have Aggro on enemies, the best way to help the tank get them off is to stay close to the tank.
  • Tanks have great Crowd Control; they often have abilities to Interrupt, Slow, Stun, and Reposition enemies.
  • When fighting dangerous enemies with frontal attacks and cleaves, try to face them away from your allies.

Hero Mechanics

Helena is a close-combat hero and fights mainly in melee range. Enemies need to be selected, close, and in front of her.

Helena's unique Hero Mechanics:

  • Combo Points are your Builder/Spender resource
      • Max 5 Combo Points can be held at a time.
      • These are built by using certain abilities, such as Measured Strike or Power Strike.
      • These are spent by using other abilities, such as Shield Bash.
  • Toughness is a passive Damage Mitigation resource.
      • This is gained by using certain abilities, such as Shields Up, and by blocking.
      • Toughness will automatically reduce incoming damage by a percentage depending on your current Toughness.
      • Every time Toughness reduces damage taken, it will deplete proportionally to the amount of damage mitigated.
      • Starting from the first quadrant on the left, you will receive 5%, 15%, 25% and lastly 35% damage reduction as long as your toughness bar is within each respective quadrant.
  • Spirit Ability - Leader's Conviction
      • Helena gains 100% Toughness for 12 sec. Toughness does not deplete for the duration of this effect.
      • Helena also gains 30% haste for 20 seconds.

Helena Tips

  • Use Combo Point Spenders before you generate more than you can use.
  • Charge and can help Helena quickly catch distant enemies.
  • Chain Pulls best used to reposition ranged enemies and casters.
  • When an enemy ability cannot be interrupted or sidestepped, use Shields Up to survive.
  • Shockwave is best used generating threat and to slow enemies so Helena can safely reposition or move out of danger.

Helena Best Build in Fellowship

Helena Weapon Options

Helena BiS Weapons

Helena is usually run with two main options: Darkfrost Arms or Fateful Arms.

Darkfrost Arms is a special weapon that provides you with a single-target attack that Freezes the enemy for three seconds, increasing their damage taken. Then, the ice will explode, spreading Chilling, a debuff that reduces the Movement Speed and Attack Speed of all affected enemies around the target. Considering this weapon has a low cooldown (30 seconds), and also taking into account that all enemies affected by Chilling will also increase their damage taken against melee attacks, Darkfrost Arms is always the go-to option for Helena.

Alternatively, Helena can also run with Fateful Arms, which has an active ability that runs on the Global Cooldown. This ability provides Helena with 200% Cooldown Reduction for 6 seconds, which allows her to have her Shields Up and Grand Melee always available for when Helena is taking a lot of damage. Fateful Arms is an excellent choice if you have problems tanking damage during your early stages playing Helena.

Best Weapon Traits

The best Weapon Traits for Helena will depend on whether you're looking for more damage or more defensive capabilities. Having said that, some of the available Traits are so good that you'll often want to stick with them regardless of your playstyle.

  • Martial Initiative: Excellent for Helena, even better if you run a build with Emerald Gems. It reduces your damage taken by 15% and increases your Main Stat by 10% for a duration equal to a percentage of the active skill of your weapon.
  • Emerald Judgement: Another great Trait for Helena that allows her to have CC and AoE damage.
  • Inspired Allegiance: This trait works wonders alongside Martial Initiative as this one gives your abilities a chance to reduce your weapon's cooldown time.
  • Hunter's Focus: This trait provides you with a lot of Haste which is always appreciated.
  • Iron Spikes: Excellent Defensive Trait for Helena which provides you with a chance to return damage and increase your Armor whenever you get hit.
  • Ancestral Intervention: Always great to have on tanks, as it allows you to survive fatal damage. It has a high cooldown time (five minutes) so don't rely on it.

Helena Legendary Items

Helena BiS Legendary Item

The best Legendary Item for Helena is the Warboots fo the Blackened Vanguard, mostly due to the Cooldown Reduction and the extra Damage it provides whenever you use Charge. Alternatively, you can run a build with Masochistic Razor Necklace, which reduces the damage dealt by the target if Helena hits them with Shield Throw.

Helena Recommended Gear Sets

Gear Sets need at least two pieces of the same set to trigger their effect. Therefore, it's recommended only to equip two gear pieces that belong to the same Set, and the rest is up to the player and the gems you'll run. With this in mind, these are the recommended Gear Sets for Helena:

  • Dark Prophecy: All your abilities have a chance to trigger a Haste increase of 25% for 20 seconds. Having extra Haste for tanks, specially Helena, is excellent, as it allows you to cast your abilities more often and accumulate Toughness more often.
  • Tuzari Grace: This Set provides the user with 3% Haste and 20% Movement Speed. Both are excellent for Helena, specially the Movement Speed.

Helena Recommended Relics

obsidian sigil relic
Obsidian Sigil

saltwash elixir relic
Saltwash Elixir

The Obsidian Sigil is a must for tanks, including Helena, due to the great Damage Reduction it provides, with a relatively low cooldown time (60 seconds). Then, the Saltwash Elixir as your secondary option is always a good option since it is able to heal 40% of your Max HP and has a 2-minute cooldown time. Ideally, you want to use this only on emergency situations.

Alternatively, you can run a build with Grimoire of Resurrection, which allows you to resurrect an ally, or Ancient Poulty Fetish, which can turn a target into a chicken, making it useless for battle. Note that the latter doesn't work against bosses; it can only be used on dungeons, and shares cooldown with the entire party so, if anyone else has it on its build, it'll be useless for Helena.

Gem Priority

Gems in Fellowship offer various bonuses depending on their type. While it may be tempting to socket as many Gem types as possible into your Equipment in exchange for a wide variety of bonuses, it's generally a lot more efficient to specialize and focus on just a few types.

Helena benefits the most from Gems that increase her Haste (Topaz) and her defensive capabilities (Emerald). If you're gearing up for particular difficult challenges, Strength and Stamina (Ruby) are definitely worth considering as well, especially if your healer has a difficult time keeping up alive. Otherwise, Helena's Gem priority should largely be as follows:

Topaz -> Diamond -> Emerald -> Ruby -> Sapphire -> Amethyst

Helena Stat Priority

Helena's Stat priority is as follows:

  1. Strength
  2. Haste
  3. Spirit
  4. Critical Strike = Expertise

Strength and Haste are the two stats you must focus the most for Helena. One provides you with Damage resistance, and the other allows you to cast your abilities more often, allowing you to create better combos and have your Shields Up available more often.

Recommended Talents for Helena

Below you'll find a list of the recommended Talents for Helena, taking into account this build and its needs. The list is based on priority, from the first Talent you'll get, to the last one.

  1. Reinforced Steel
  2. Sharpened Blade
  3. Unscarred Soul
  4. High Command
  5. Second Wind
  6. Gleaming Shield
  7. Front Line Defender

The core Talents for Helena are Reinforced Steel, Gleaming Shield, and High Command. After that, it'll highly depend on what you, as a player, valuate more. If you want to go ahead and inflict a lot of damage, you can go for Skull Cracker to buff Shield Throw (while also equiping the Masochistic Razor Necklace as a Legendary Item), but if you want to be more of a tanky player and focus on soaking damage, then you can run the Talents listed above.

Gleaming Shield provides extra chances to block attacks and also increases all the incoming heals by 20%. High Command decreases the cooldown time of Shields Up, and Reinforced Steel increases your Armor stat. That's everything you need to be tanky enough. Then, Sharpened Blade provides extra damage and reduces the Attack Speed of the targets, Unscarred Soul buffs your Empowered Shield Slam by reducing your damage taken by 20%, and Second Wind increases your Strength once your Toughness has reduced enough damage.

Helena Skill Rotation

Helena needs Toughness to work properly on the field, therefore, she depends on her abilities that allow her to generate Toughness. The most powerful one is Shields Up, so her rotation goes around this ability. With this in mind, Shields Up becomes a precious resource you must only use if you have less than a half Toughness, or you are about to overcap your Shields Up charges.

Also, due to Veteran of War, which is a passive effect almost all of Helena's abilities have, Helena can reduce the Cooldown time of her abilities, so to have a clean rotation for Helena, you must learn which abilities reduces the cooldown time of the rest of your abilities.

With this effect in mind, rather than a rotation, Helena has a list of priorities, all of them focused on having Shields Up ready as often as possible:

  1. Sweeping Strike
  2. Shockwave
  3. Shield Slam
  4. Hold The Line
  5. Shield Throw
  6. Charge
  7. Power Strike
  8. Measured Strike

Sweeping Strike goes first as it'll be one of your main damage resources, and it applies bleeding, which you always want to apply against enemies no matter what.

Then, we have Shockwave, which provides cooldown time reduction to Shields Up. Shield Slam provides cooldown time reduction to Shockwave, Hold the Line resets the cooldown time of Shield Slam, working like a chained cycle.

Alternatively, Shield Throw also provides Cooldown time Reduction to Shockwave, and Charge gives cooldown time ot Shield Throw, as well as Shockwave and Shield Slam. If you are going to use Charge, make sure you first used Shield Throw, Shockwave, and Shield Slam, so you don't waste the Cooldown time Reduction.

If everything else is in cooldown, go ahead and use Measured Strike to fill in the holes.
