It's been a long wait, but Black Ops and Black Ops 2 have finally made it to the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. While these are only ports (not to be confused with remasters), it's still a great opportunity to go back into the era of what many believe are the golden years of Call of Duty. If you want to pick up BO1 & BO2 for the PS5, then you need to know where to buy them and which edition to get so you can still play with your friends.

If the PlayStation Store has crashed for you, then click "Shooters" on the "Latest" tab, and then filter by "Release Date," and you should see Black Ops and Black Ops 2 as the first results.

How to Play Black Ops 2 on the PlayStation 5

In the PlayStation Store, enter "Black Ops II" or "Black Ops 2" in the search function. This will bring up Black Ops 2, and you'll know it's the right version because it will say "PS5|PS4" above the logo. Black Ops 2 will cost $19.99 for PlayStation Plus users, or $39.99 if you don't have PlayStation Plus.

Black Ops 2 also doesn't include the DLC Packs, so if you want to play more Multiplayer and Zombies maps, you'll need to buy the Call of Duty: Black Ops II - Season Pass for $9.89 for PS Plus or $29.99 for non-PS Plus users.

When you make your purchase, you will be given two download options:

  • If you download Black Ops 2's PS4 Version, you will be in lobbies with other PS5 & PS4 players.
  • If you download Black Ops 2's PS5 Version, you will be in lobbies with other PS5 & PS4 players.
  • Purchasing the Black Ops 2 Season Pass will let you matchmake with players who do not currently own the Season Pass.

A recent patch to Black Ops 2 now lets players connect to others and matchmake across PS5 and PS4 regardless of what version of the game they have installed. This also applies to the Season Pass.

How to Play Black Ops 1 on the PlayStation 5

The same applies to Black Ops 1 as it did for Black Ops 2. Simply search for "Black Ops" in the PlayStation Store, and you'll find the original Black Ops with a PS4 and PS5 logo above it. The original Black Ops will cost $19.99 if you have PlayStation Plus, but if you don't, then it's $39.99.

You will also need to purchase the Call of Duty: Black Ops - Season Pass for $9.89(PS Plus) or $29.99 (non-PS Plus) if you want to gain access to the First Strike, Escalation, Annihilation, and Reszurrection Content Packs.

Lastly, you will need to make sure you are downloading the correct version of the game:

  • Downloading Black Ops (PS4) will let you play with both PS5 and PS4 users.
  • Downloading Black Ops (PS5) will let you play with other PS5 users and PS4 users.
  • Purchasing the Season Pass will let you play with others who do not own the Season Pass and will not impact your matchmaking.

You can download either version of Black Ops, and you will still be able to play with others regardless of their console and Season Pass status.

These PlayStation Plus offers will end on August 8, 2026, so you might want to act fast before you have to pay full price for both games and their season passes.
