Diablo 4 Difficulty Modes Guide

Lord of Hatred Difficulty Mode Guide
Base Game Difficulty Mode Guide

Difficulty Modes in Diablo IV determine enemy strength, rewards, experience gains, item quality, and access to various endgame systems. As players progress through Sanctuary, higher difficulty settings become available, significantly increasing both challenge and rewards. The system was heavily expanded following the Lord of Hatred overhaul, replacing Diablo 4's earlier World Tier structure with a much larger progression ladder that now ranges from Normal difficulty all the way to Torment XII.

Diablo IV Lord of Hatred Difficulty Mode Guide

World Tiers in Diablo 4 were replaced by the modern Difficulty system introduced during the Vessel of Hatred Expansion and later expanded in Lord of Hatred Expansion. This new structure provides a more gradual and scalable progression path, allowing players to increase both challenge and rewards as they improve their character, gear, and overall build optimization. The first four Difficulties—known as Standard Difficulties—are Normal, Hard, Expert, and Penitent. These tiers are primarily intended for leveling and early progression as players work toward reaching Level 70, the current maximum character level. Each Standard Difficulty increases enemy strength while also improving rewards such as Experience and Gold gains.

Lord of Hatred Standard Difficulty in Diablo 4

Lord of Hatred significantly expanded the endgame progression system by introducing additional Torment Difficulty tiers beyond the original structure. Players can now progress through Torment I all the way to Torment XII, with each tier offering increasingly difficult enemies, improved loot quality, higher Experience bonuses, and access to advanced endgame rewards such as Mythic Uniques, Legendary Runes, Greater Lair Keys, Set Charms, and high-tier crafting materials.

Higher Torment Difficulties are unlocked through progression in The Pit of the Artificer, creating a more structured endgame ladder focused on build optimization, TemperingMasterworking, and Paragon progression.

NOTETorment V through Torment XII are exclusive to the Lord of Hatred expansion.

Lord of Hatred Torment Difficulty in Diablo 4

Torment Difficulties represent Diablo 4's primary endgame progression system and are designed for players who have completed the campaign and begun optimizing their builds through Legendary items, TemperingMasterworkingParagon progression, and advanced itemization systems. Beginning with Torment I and extending all the way to Torment XII, each difficulty tier significantly increases enemy health, damage, and overall challenge while also improving rewards such as Experience, Gold, Ancestral items, Mythic Uniques, crafting materials, Legendary RunesSet Charms, and other high-end progression resources.

Unlike earlier Diablo 4 versions that relied on a smaller World Tier system, the modern Torment ladder provides a much more gradual and scalable progression path for endgame players. Higher Torment levels are unlocked by completing increasingly difficult tiers of The Pit of the Artificer, making player progression more closely tied to build optimization and endgame mastery. As players climb through the Torment system, they gain access to improved loot quality, increased material drops, and some of the strongest rewards currently available in Diablo 4.

Diablo 4 Gear Changes in Torment Tiers

Some changes have also been made to the loot system within the Torment Tiers. Ancestral Items do not fall into the category of Greater Affixes anymore, but have now started to drop in Torment 1. The quality of each Ancestral Item improves the higher Torment Tier you play in. Other Common, Magic, and Rare items can still be obtained while playing in Torment difficulty. This is where the loot filter comes in handy, so that you can choose to filter out what type of loot you can obtain within each Torment Tier and each activity.

Each item has also been reworked to have multiplicative damage bonuses instead of additive damage bonuses. Additionally, you can bring your item to the Horadric Cube to further customize your item to gain uniques. The rework done to the Unique items removes the fixed affixes, as you can reroll them in the Horadric Cube, given that you have the required materials. This gives players the chance to craft their item to fit their build and their playstyle.

Additional changes include obtaining high-affix gear in Infernal Hordes at Torment Tiers, progressing the Season Rank VI bonus objectives to unlock Masterwork to Quality 10 for late Torment progression, and finally, higher-quality Grand Gems can be obtained at Jewels at high Torment Tiers, instead of Vendors.

Diablo IV Base Game Difficulty Mode Guide

The modern difficulty system is designed to support both casual progression and long-term endgame scaling. Early difficulties such as Normal, Hard, and Expert are intended for leveling and campaign progression, while Penitent and Torment difficulties focus more heavily on optimized Builds, Tempering, Masterworking, Mythic Unique farming, and advanced endgame activities such as The Pit and Lair Bosses.

Each new difficulty tier increases enemy power while also improving rewards such as Experience gains, Gold acquisition, item rarity, crafting materials, Legendary Runes, Charms, Greater Lair Keys, and other high-end progression resources. Several Torment tiers also unlock entirely new item ecosystems, including Ancestral items, Mythic Uniques, Set Charms, and advanced crafting materials. Unlike the original Diablo IV launch version, higher Torment difficulties are now unlocked through progression in The Pit of the Artificer. This creates a more structured endgame ladder where players gradually unlock increasingly difficult tiers by improving their gear, Paragon progression, Tempering bonuses, and overall build optimization.

Tutorial Presence in Diablo 4

As you start the game in Diablo 4, players will be asked the amount of guidance they would rather have during their experience. This can always be changed within the options menu, should players decide to do so. More Guidance gives players more tutorials on different aspects of the game and is best for new Diablo players who wish to have this helping hand. Whereas, Less Guidance will still give tutorials but only on new features of the game. This encourages players to explore the Sanctuary and what it can offer on their own.

Diablo IV Difficulty Mode FAQ

Best Difficulty for Leveling in Diablo 4

Choosing the best Difficulty for leveling in Diablo 4 depends heavily on player experience, build strength, and overall progression speed. For most new players, Normal and Hard difficulties provide the smoothest leveling experience by allowing consistent progression without requiring highly optimized gear or advanced mechanics. Experienced Diablo players or players leveling alternate characters may prefer Expert difficulty due to its improved rewards and faster progression potential. However, Expert can become significantly more dangerous if a character falls behind in gear upgrades, Tempering, or damage scaling.

Penitent difficulty is generally intended for players who already possess strong Legendary items, Tempered gear, and a more complete understanding of Diablo 4's combat systems. While the rewards are substantially better, enemies become considerably more aggressive and durable, making efficient leveling heavily dependent on build optimization. Most players transition into Torment difficulties after reaching Level 70 and beginning endgame progression systems such as The Pit, Masterworking, Paragon optimization, and Lair Boss farming.

How to Change Difficulty in Diablo 4?

Players can change Difficulty settings in Diablo 4 through the Character Select screen before entering the game. After selecting a character, the current Difficulty can be adjusted using the statue found in Kyovashad, Kurast Bazaar, or Temis. Available options depend on account progression and previously unlocked Torment tiers. Difficulty selection directly affects enemy strength, Experience gains, Gold rewards, loot quality, crafting material availability, and access to certain endgame rewards throughout Diablo 4.

Higher Torment Difficulties must first be unlocked through progression in The Pit of the Artificer. Each new Torment tier requires players to complete increasingly difficult Pit levels before becoming permanently available for that character. Earlier difficulties, such as Normal, Hard, Expert, and Penitent can be selected freely once available. However, higher Torment levels are intended for endgame characters with optimized gear, Tempering, Masterworking upgrades, and advanced Paragon progression.

Do Seasons Affect the Difficulty Mode in Diablo 4?

Every few months, Diablo 4 comes out with a new season that features new mechanics, updated items, and more challenges. With each season, you will need to create a new Seasonal Character. This encourages you to try out new builds and classes every few months to try out new items and mechanics. Fortunately, you will not have to play through the full campaign again. You can skip the campaigns and partake in the new Season Journey and also the Battle Pass. You can build up your character and go through the various difficulties to test your build further

What Pit Level Unlocks Which Torment Tier in Diablo 4?

From Torment 1 to Torment 5, each Torment Tier will unlock upon completing 5 levels in The Pit . So that means, unlocking Torment 1 will require you to complete Pit Level 10. Unlocking Torment 2 will require you to complete Pit Level 15. Unlocking Torment 3 will require you to complete Pit Level 20. So on and so forth.

From Torment 6 onwards, each Torment Tier will unlock upon completing 10 levels in The Pit. This means, unlocking Torment 6 will require you to complete Pit Level 40. Unlocking Torment 7 will require you to complete Pit Level 50. Unlocking Torment 8 will require you to complete Pit Level 60, etc.

Diablo IV Capstone Dungeon Guide

What are Capstone in Diablo 4?

Compared to previous seasons, Capstone Dungeons now play an important role in progressing the players' Season Journey rank. Each rank from 1 to 5 have their own unique Dungeon with fixed difficulties and recommended level, you will have an estimate of when they can participate in the dungeon or you can choose to enter the dungeon early anyway as the dungeon difficulty does not scale with your level. As long as you can defeat the boss within the dungeon, you can clear the Rank. To participate in a Capstone Dungeon, you can open your Seasonal Rank menu to track and enter a dungeon. The dungeon will also be marked on your map when you track the dungeon.

There are Rank 6 and Rank 7, however, they do not have a Capstone Dungeon, but instead, you will need to clear Pit Tier 60 and 75, respectively, to progress.

Capstone Dungeon Rewards in Diablo 4

Completing each Capstone Dungeon will reward you with a Greater Ranking Cache, either a Skill Point or a Paragon Point, and unlock the next Season Rank. Completing the Hellish Descent Capstone Dungeon will gain you access to The Pit as well as The Tower. Completing Rank 5 will reward you with the Seasonal Pet and also Rank 6, since Rank 6 and 7 does not have a dungeon, completing Rank 7 will reward you the Gilded Laurels.
